Baryshnikov Sport

One of the nicer 90's fresh light scents. The top notes have grapefruit and a touch of mint along with the "usual suspects," and a nicely balanced green accord as well. As a "Sport" fragrance (whatever that means), I'd expect it to be a light formulation that doesn't necessarily last long, but it actually holds up quite well at a low level. The synthetic aqueous notes aren't overdone and fade quickly, leaving the citrus and green notes to blend with some subtle woods and a bit of vetiver as it dries. This isn't the kind of fragrance that burns itself into your memory, but it's not trying to be that, and it succeeds very well at being a refreshingly light scent with a more distinctive personality than many of its 90's brethren. Very wearable!

This fragrance is a typical fresh sport scent from the mid-90s. It's saved from being totally generic by being sweeter than some, spicier than others, with a cool eucalyptus note. Kind of redundant if you own a better fragrance like Cool Water, Acqua di Gio, or the like, but still a nice fresh scent that lasts quite well. A definite several steps up from a lot of the cheap fresh fragrances of that era. Can be had online for next to nothing. Nothing groundbreaking here, but good bang for the buck. I don't love it, but I do like it well enough.

At first the citrus is obvious, more orange-like than anything else, but not too strong.. There is also an odd quality that is somewhat similar to fenugreek (and I don't get clear eucalyptus). After half an hour or so it goes into a really nice ginger and wood that's just a little sweet. At this point I'd call it a light woody oriental. That may last an hour or so and then it's really light, a touch musky. So, I think it's worth trying this one on cloth to see if the nice woody/spicy aspect lasts for at least a few hours. I'll report back when I try that. Overall, it's reasonably natural smelling for this genre but probably moves around too much for most people, who seem to prefer linear scents these days. I wouldn't compare this to AdG or CW as gmmcnair did because this one is focused on wood and spice for a while, whereas the other two are not. Also, I don't get the same mega dose of hedione or dihydromyrcenol here, respectively (though I do think it has its fair share of dihydromyrcenol). At current prices it's a bargain, but I don't' think it's what most people think of as a sport scent nowadays. UPDATE: This one seems to perform better on cloth and it's quite nice and long lasting, not a Cool Water clone but certainly not too challenging either.

I believe this was my very first fragrance purchase in the 90s. Typical aquatic/citrus/fresh with nothing spectacular. Easily forgotten and more easily replaced by better fragrances in the same class.
