Baryshnikov

I was gifted a large bottle of this by a friend who worked in cosmetics, back in 1999. I still have it, it's about 95% full. It does smell great, but I never wore it, as I wasn't into fragrances at that time. I wonder what my bottle of Baryshikov is worth today. I'll have to wear a dab of it to bring me back to '99 (it doesn't have a sprayer). Update: seems my bottle is the aftershave splash, still a nice one. Now I'm editing this review, after a long time of trying various other fragrances over the years. This one is pretty similar to YSL Jazz. It's an aromatic fougere type to me, but there is no prominent oakmoss or citrus note. Instead, lavender seems to be what I pick up on most. It's fresh, clean and reminiscent of the 80's fragrances yet clearly transitioning into the 90's towards something more modern and mainstream. Really good performance. The company that produced this, Richard Barrie Fragrances, went out of business in the late 90's, and that spelled the end of these Baryshnikov fragrances. What a shame, as this one's really a beauty (and very few have ever heard of it).

I still have my old bottle of this. It reminds me somewhat of Calvin. I love the way it starts off like a herbal, floral scent but I like the drydown somewhat less because it transforms into a leathery, somewhat salty, sandalwood scent with little hints of the floral, herbal. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't seem to last very long on my skin. All-n-all, it was a pretty good scent but certainly not worth the high price I've heard people asking for it on e-bay.

Every fragrance site has reviews of people saying they had this cologne, it was their favorite and want them to bring it back. So why don't they? This cologne is so good that people would stop me and ask what cologne I was wearing. It is my all time favorite. Especially when I would say "Baryshnikov" and they would reply "What?" lol

This is my first review on Fragrantica. Greetings and much appreciation for all the contributed information over the years. Just coming out of high school, I bought Baryshnikov for Men Pour Homme EDT back in 1991 at my local BX. The purchase was mostly influenced by my best friend who liked full masculine, nuclear-strength producing colognes. And wow, it was strong! Strong like Dior Fahrenheit, which I also ended up buying at the time. It was the type that would linger on your clothes for days. I wore it in college a few times, got subtle looks from the ladies, but never got a compliment. Of course this will depends on many other factors and not just scent! I did enjoy wearing it, however, it was so strong that I would only wear it on very special occasions. Eventually, I soon grew out of it, as I was trying different colognes like Dior Fahrenheit and Claiborne for Men (so unique at the time). Fast forward to today. I still have it with original box and decided to take another sniff. yep, it's still all there. It might be a tad weaker in strength, but the profile is still amazingly there. A great trip down memory lane. Info: Aromatic Fougere scent opens fresh and later settles into a mix of lavender, woods, and amber. According to the Estonian site, the notes are: spices, fruit notes, amber, myrrh, labdanum, patchouli, and sandalwood. Think of vintage Xeryus except with sandalwood and without the "oriental" wood. Baryshnikov feels lighter and doesn't have the fougere quality of Xeryus either. It's got a hint of sweetness and the main accord in the base is a sandalwood and amber combination. This is a very nice fragrance that is blended just right. It's not for the niche crowd that wants a note or accord to come roaring out at them, but is instead for the aficionado of vintage designer fragrances. I just did a dab sampling because I had already applied something else so I'll have to update this review when I can wear it normally.

I had a bottle of this 20 years ago. I can't remember all the notes but I loved it and thought it was a quality fragrance. I have seen bottles on EBay go for lots of money. Wish I could find an affordable bottle somewhere or that it would be re-issued.
