Gambit

Alright, one bottle, one nose, no bias. Gambit opens with a bold aromatic spice kick — clove hits first with a sharp, almost peppery warmth, backed by a green herbal whisper of petitgrain and lavender that feels refined rather than abrasive. It’s not a mass-market citrus blast or an ambroxan cloud; it feels more purposeful and sculpted from the start. The spice edge is undeniable, but it isn’t harsh — it has a mature precision that makes you pay attention right away.  That opening phase sets the tone for what Gambit is trying to do: classic masculine with a modern spin. It’s not trying to be loud or trendy, it’s trying to feel composed and deliberate. The spice doesn’t just sit on top — it leads you into the heart, and you can tell this is built on a quality structure rather than just volume. As it settles, the initial clove sharpness softens and cardamom and geranium start to push forward, adding a spicy floral depth that feels a lot more elegant than it sounds on paper. The heart here is where Gambit begins to feel more luxe, like a richer take on the archetype you get from something like Sauvage Elixir, but with more nuance and warmth. It’s textured rather than linear, walking that line between spicy citrus freshness and an amber woody warmth without tipping too far toward either extreme.  The dry down showcases a creamy sandalwood and patchouli base that keeps everything grounded. It’s not loud or beastly — it sits with a confident presence. It evolves into something warm and subtly spicy, with just enough sweet balance to keep it from feeling austere. It’s the phase where this fragrance earns its place in a luxury-leaning rotation, feeling far more composed and refined than many scents in this spicy aromatic space.  This is absolutely a scent best worn when you want to make an impression without smelling like everyone else. It has enough character to stand on its own but remains versatile — date night, dinner out, evening wear, work, warm weather, and cooler weather all work. This is truly the epitome of a Swiss Army knife fragrance. It leans more masculine and classic than youthful trend, which is something a lot of people will appreciate if they’re over the usual ambroxan crowd. However, as a fougère/barbershop snob, it is not barbershop. More “oriental fougere” if we went to make associations. Performance follows suit. noticeable projection in the early hours with a steady, comfortable longevity that keeps it around without becoming cloying or overbearing. It doesn’t scream for attention, but it doesn’t disappear into the woodwork either. It’s not a “beast mode” fragrance, but you will go nose blind, do not spray more! While I start to not smell myself after and a few hours, people around you can. It lingers in the air around you. If you reapply you will turn into a Dior Sauvage Elxir meme lmao Final verdict, Gambit feels like an elevated take on an aromatic spicy profile with refined construction. It isn’t a carbon copy of anything you know, but it lives in the same neighborhood as premium spicy aromatics, just on the more upscale side of that house. For that, and for how composed it feels from opening to dry down, I’m rating it: 8.9 out of 10. Does everything very well, it just doesn’t have any exceptional characteristics that bring it into a 9+ rating. However, this will be my typical day at the office signature scent. Higher level meeting days will still be Tom Ford Fougere D’Argent. ____________ **EDIT** After wearing more consistently and spraying a tad more (5-7 sprays), compared to my usual 3-4 sprays, the notes pop a lot more (especially the clove and cardamon), silage & longevity is improved, and the combination of these improvements brings my score to: 9.4 out of 10 *EDIT* I had never smelled Drakkar Noir, so I went to my local Meijer, they carry it, and I grabbed a bottle so I could do my own comparison. I honestly do not get the “Gambit equals Drakkar” take. Yes, lavender is a big part of the profile, but the opening on Gambit feels much more controlled to me, with a spicy lift that reads more clove and cardamom, not that sharp, old school aromatic blast I get from Drakkar. The drydown on Gambit also turns smoother and more modern, with amberwoods, sandalwood, and patchouli, instead of that classic bar soap, throwback fougère vibe. Now Sauvage Elixir is a comparison I can understand more. They are in the same general lane, but they are not the same fragrance, and it is easy to tell them apart side by side. In my opinion, owning both would not be redundant if you like rotating across different situations and occasions.

So I was at Nordstrom perusing the fragrances and came across their Mind Games counter. My only experience with Mind Games up until that point had been Blockade, which I absolutely loved. So I took my time going through all the different fragrances they had and settled on a couple that really caught my attention; Gambit and French Defense. Today we're doing Gambit. Let's get into it; Scent: The opening is warm spicy, aromatic, and woody. The primary notes I get are cloves, lavender, ambrostar, and geranium. The strongest of the notes are the lavender and cloves. The cloves open up the fragrance with a strong, photo-realistic punch of warm spiciness; like opening up a spice jar of whole cloves. The lavender is right there with the cloves in terms of strength, and brings its familiar aromatic, slightly spicy "licorice" accord. This is followed by the ambrostar and geranium. The ambrostar helps to balance out the spicy aromatics with a strong dose of woodiness. Lastly, the geranium flutters in the background with a floral, rosy nuance. Upon first sniff I also got a banana accord that reminded me immediately of Xerjoff's Tony Iommi Monkey Special. Upon reviewing the note breakdowns for both, I'm forced to assume its the patchouli. The dry down is still woody, warm spicy, and aromatic. The primary notes I get are cloves, ambrostar, lavender, and patchouli. The strongest of the notes are the ambrostar and cloves. The cloves carry the same warm spiciness from the opening, while the ambrostar has ramped up to provide an even stronger dose of woodiness than it did in the opening with some added ambery sweetness. This is followed by the lavender and patchouli. The lavender still has the same aromatic spiciness from the opening, just dialed back a bit. Lastly, the patchouli has risen to the top for some added dark, woody sweetness. The sandalwood is also noticeable in the background as a softly creamy and powdery woodsy note. Performance: Initial projection is nuclear and easily fills the room. Sillage matches that intensity with a dense and heavy scent trail. After about 4 hours the projection was still able to fill a room and the scent trail was still easily noticeable. At the 7 hour mark the projection was still about 6 feet and the scent trail was still noticeable. The projection fell off heavy at that point and the fragrance became a skin scent around the 10 hour mark. When to wear: This is 100% a fall/winter fragrance suited for evening wear. This is not something that's worn casually, it's made for dates and special/formal occasions. This is not an office friendly fragrance. Blind buy: If you like strong, masculine, throwback-type men's fragrances like Sauvage Elixir or Drakkar Noir, this is a safe blind buy for you. Final verdict: So yes, Gambit does smell like a more expensive, niche version of Sauvage Elixir. Not to say Elixir is cheap, because it's pretty pricey too; but Gambit is even more expensive. Now there's lots of similarities that can be drawn between the two fragrances, but there are some noticeable differences as well. Namely, Gambit is smoother and more focused on woods whereas Elixir is louder and more focused on the warm spiciness of the licorice note. Also, Gambit has that "banana-ish" patchouli note that I compare to Monkey Special. But really those differences will be lost on the general public. In passing, most people will smell Gambit and think "Oh, he's wearing that one Sauvage". It's a fantastic fragrance though, don't get me wrong. If you don't have Elixir and you have the money to burn, this is a great pick up. But if you're like me and already own Elixir, this is a bit redundant. This is the best way I can explain it; If you want the Lexus get Gambit, if you want the Toyota get Elixir, and if you want the Scion get Lataffa's Asad. They'll all get you to the same place, but the ride quality will differ. Scent: 9/10 Longevity: 7/10 Sillage: 10/10

Sweetness of Dior Sauvage Elixir (minus the fir/piney/winterfresh note) combined with barbershop like, fresh-spicy qualities of Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir. It's not really more like the one or the other. There are some similarities with both. Just imagine DNA's of both DN and SE combined together and on top of that spicy dirty clove is added and pleasant warmth of Ambroxan wraps it all up - That is Mind Games Gambit. Here some old school traits meets the new school ones to make ultimate masculine fragrance of modern times. It's all about playful yet elegant interplay of classic barbershop fougere touch, warm-spiciness and subtle sweetness. I rate this fragrance 10/10 for men. Great sillage and excellent longevity: 10 hours+ on skin. You don't really need to spray a lot that evens out the high price point of this one. Update: As much as i love the scent after longer testing i must lower my score to 9.5 or 9/10 due to versatility issues. It's probably not the best fragrance inside hot indoor premises with poor ventilation or hot summers when you're sweating a lot. If more than 1 spray is applied, especially around neck area it can get too cloying and heavy inside wearers scent bubble. Aura of this fragrance can get nuclear if overapplied and sweetness and spiciness will overtake fresh qualities exponentially the more you apply and i suspect ambrostar is probably the one to blame here. Must be very careful on trigger with this one.

Similar to Sauvage elixir, but different. The dogfather does do a pretty good job explaining, but there are more differences than quality, which is clearly noticeable. Gambit has this interesting greenish sweetness in the heart and base that sauvage elixir does not have. It also has a lightly aromatic almost bubblegum touch that makes this interpretation of the genre pleasant in its own way. No, it doesn't smell like a bubblegum designer, but that nuance is there in a smooth high end way. This reminds me a bit more of Floris 007 in its woody spicy aspects than it does SE. It also has an element of Creed Viking, if you've smelled that. Viking is more traditional smelling, though. If you love the profile of scents like Sauvage elixir, Creed Viking and Floris 007 and you want to check out an extremely smooth, greenish aromatic sweetish varietal, this this is worth a try. My guess is that this would be a touch more modernly appealing than the other two listed, while maintaning the profile's spicy maturity. Is it redundant for someone who likes this type of scent but only needs one? Yes. Is it redundant for someone who loves this profile and can't get enough of it? No. It does its own thing to some degree. 8.75/10

I first smelt this fragrance many years ago when I was given a sample; I loved the smell but rarely wore it due to only having 2ml bottle - but when I wore it, I felt absolutely amazing! It is CRUCIAL to allow this fragrance to dry on your skin, if you spray it on paper and smell right away, you'll be repulsed by it, in all honesty for me, the first five minutes are close to mosquito repellant - it really does smell odd, but when that dry down hits, I get transformed into a new world. It's a beautiful scent that does the spices very nicely, it's a clear male scent but it isn't a masculine smell. I think the best way I would describe it would be: a man 20 years before he starts smoking a cigar and drinking Whiskey and Bourbon, who has his life together but still enjoying his time on earth, meeting people, making memories that his grandchildren will gawk at, this is what he would wear during his 20s. Very well done - my only concern with Mind Games, as always, going to be the price point; if you can get a sample bottle before getting it I would highly recommend just due to the insane price tag but for me it was well worth it!

Gambit is extremely underrated and glad it is. Fragrance influencers all go for the same things and overrate colognes. Gambit basically has this warm spicyness that Dior elixir has but it’s more refined. Not as sharp but softer, a little sweet kind of hints of a rose water type of scent somehow. It’s also not a basic fragrance, it’s not a mysterious type of fragrance but more of a masculine man wears that wants to be known. I give it really a 9.5/10, it’s not Dior elixir at all but a similar type of dna in a way. I don’t sense the PDM percival comparison really at all. If you want a fragrance that’s not boozy or oud, and don’t want to smell like Dior elixir when you out this is it. Like I said it’s not Dior elixir at all just the warm spice you is the dna of it. Dry down is also really nice. You get this pine type of scent. It’s not a regular designer fragrance I guess you can say high priced designer like elixir. What I can sum it up it is just Dior elixir spice but refined, high quality, piney, just a very small hint of rose water, soapy just a lil in the very beginning, and masculine and very strong. Don’t overspray.

We may not come across something like this more than once in our lifetime I reckon... Nothing to do with Elixir.. In my honest opinion it resembles Gris Charnel but way stronger.. I’m down to my knees for having this fragrance in my collection. This is absolutely mind fuk*** blowing! It last and last and last.. you can feel the high quality of it after having a sniff later on in the day... Yehh it’s still there man!!! Maybe not projecting as straight after the first few blasts but totally totally alive and breathing on your skin. Specially the creamy sandalwood.. wow.. The cloves and the cardamon together.. I can see this shining bright through winter cold days but I also think this fragrance can be pulled off on spring days.. I don’t even think I’m entitled to wear something like that I should give it to my dad haha it’s just so refined.. smells wisdom and avengement’.. “Nothing like a day after the other day..” Even if you blast a lot of this scent, those who get choked will thank you for that.. it’s that good!!!!! Mind Games you bunch of legends!!!!!!

It starts close to Sauvage Elixir (SE) and dries down closer to Aventus Absolu with some added freshness and an almost barbershop flair. It takes out the gross licorice note from SE, which is great, but the opening can be intense. This intensity comes from its performance and the spiciness. It's smoother than SE, and the drydown is VERY nice. It has just the right amount of barbershop vibe (opening into mid) without fully leaning in that direction, which I appreciate. It would work more for someone in their late 20s and up. Lasts and projects forever without being too much after you get past the opening. This could be used year-round/ any occasion if you watch your sprays and skip the summer heat. For a cool summer night or an air-conditioned indoor setting, this would fit the bill. On discounters, around $250 for 100ml, this is a great fragrance, but definitely sample first. I'll finish my 10ml and make a final decision on picking up a bottle, but I'm leaning toward getting one at the moment.

To be fair, I am not a big fan of most Mind Games. They are nice yet overpriced for the most part, and in particular the likes of Blockade and French Defense did not overly ‘wow’ me. Of the only ones I found to be distinct and memorable is this one, but still I think it is overpriced for what it is. It has been compared to a smoother Sauvage elixir or a patchouli Percival, and they are a little off but at least get close to the truth. This is a strong wooded patchouli scent to the point where the strong silage is noticeable from a couple feet. It is commanding and what you would think a boss would wear to a presentation or event. Overall this is great and just different enough from the other mainstream scents to get my attention. It is one of the only ones from Mind Games I thought was a distinct enough wear for a professional or luxurious setting.

If you're into regal, boss, masculinity in a bottle, this is all you need. It's 100% an everyday signature scent, an"expensive"everyday scent I must add lol. When you wear this, it gives you a boost in confidence as well as presence whenever and wherever you go which suits any occasion and season. You can dress is up to a wedding or down on a day out running errands. You will without a doubt be the only person in the room who smells like this due to it's unique scent profile with its expensive price tag. I was able to pick it up at a high 200 after waiting a year for it to hit discounters, even then it goes out of stock almost instantly. If you see it at a trusted discounter, just buy it, there is know one on this planet that I've seen or heard of that dislikes this masterpiece fragrance.

Sweet, dark, rich masculine scent. First, that rich lavender, then followed by that heavy but warm spicy cardamon, is just amazing. You Mr. Gambit got me hooked. After 10+ hours, it lingers around you. I was able to smell it on my arm and shirt easily. This is beast mode and is ideal for cold weather. I use it for the office, and every time i caught whifs of this during my shit, It was just lovely. I think a woman can rock it, but she needs to be hyper confident of herself when using it. Highly recommended or at least a sample. Tested on a 2 ml decant.

Whooo! I'mBout'TaMakeANameForMyselfHere! This is fresh & clean along with some spices, and a nice touch of floral. Mind Games signature Ambroxan is really good. It is the foundation that holds everthing together. The patchouli is pleasant and the sandalwood smoothes everything out. This fragrance smells great out of the box, and even better after maceration! The name's Gambit . . . Remember it!

Completely disagree with one of the comments at bottom its not heavy patchuli at all ,off course its not a typical freshi if you buy and think its going to smells fresh clean citrus heavy like normal freshi do ,its different kind of fresh then typical freshi and its worth the praise and should get more attention then typical Blocked gets which doesn't last long this is really good

Gambit is the epitome of freshness. Imagine a rich man’s Drakkar Noir—refined, powerful, and built for heat. It’s fresh and invigorating with a spicy, almost crisp edge. Sharp at first spray, but quickly settles into something smoother and greener. Elegant and lush, though just a little dry on the finish. An everyday stunner for warmer climates.

One of the best fragrances ever created in my opinion. Super earthy, woody, spicy and fresh. Incredibly rich smelling and absolutely gorgeous. One of the few niches I can genuinely say is worth the price. An opulent and versatile cologne for any dressed up situation.

Dark and masculine; oozes wealth and success. For whatever reason, smelling this evokes memories of the Mad Men season 1 episode where Don Draper goes on his apology tour with Rachel Menken and ultimately bangs her, lol. 8/10.

This one is by far the most unique smelling fresh spring summer fragrance i have came across after long time which you can wear it in winter time as well ,good high quality ingredients, long lasting, very good projection 10/10

Gambit is a unique combination of clean and fresh petitigrain with dirty and earthy patchouli, plus geranium and clove notes that makes it ambery and dense. The price is really hefty, but I will buy it anyway.

Something very unique and good as a fresh fregrance then typical citrus heavy fragrance, also i recon i can wear every day every season every occasion 9.8/10 easily one of my favourite unique freshi

My favorite scent at the time of this review -- definitely overpriced (unless bought at a discounter somewhere), lovely soft spice and cool fresh scent that lasts a long time
