Quartz

When I was in high school, back around 1983, I was an exchange student just outside of Paris and the girl who I was staying with -- Shereen -- gave me her bottles of Hermes Caleche and of Quartz. I remember loving both but ultimately feeling a little dissatisfied with Quartz because while it had all the mossiness of other vintage beauties, it was missing the punch-in-the-nose that I wanted at the time (a la Rochas Femme, or something!). When I saw it on sale on FragNet recently, I remembered how much I'd enjoyed it and since, post-1970's and 1980's, I've grown to enjoy non-power house fragrances, I spent the $26 and ordered a bottle. Well, Quartz is absolutely beautiful -- cool, fresh, and oh-so-mossy -- just as I remembered. Maybe it's the name of it, but there's a minerally quality to it, as well as a freshness that made my daughter exclaim, "It smells like the air at the beach!" To my nose, it doesn't smell like any of the fragrances listed above, but it does share qualities (and some notes) with several other fragrances: the cool oakmoss and peach of Mitsouko, the oakmoss, hyacinth, carnation, and benzoin of White Linen, the honeysuckle and benzoin of Chant d'Aromes, and even the cool mossiness of Rive Gauche (but without the rose). Like all of these, it's so elegant and sophisticated but is less overwhelming or statement-y than Mitsouko, White Linen, or Rive Gauche; in fact, it wears more like Chant d'Aromes, exquisitely light and fresh, but lovely and elegant, great for warm weather. I'm so happy I got myself another bottle, some 35 years later!

Quartz by Molyneaux is categorized as a floral, but this fragrance is a green chypre to my nose. Sparkling aldehydes are the opening notes. Orris root, oakmoss and a hint of ripe melon develop several minutes later, followed by fresh cedar. Overall, Quartz has a dry, herbal composition. Quartz is a refreshing departure from my usual floral fragrances. If you like Calandre, Rive Gauche, or Coriandre, then give this a whirl. Another reviewer mentioned that Quartz was "alive"--which is quite accurate! The beauty of Quartz is that it's versatile (appropriate for boardroom or cocktail party) and affordable. Sillage radiates about 2 feet, but longevity is outstanding (7 hours). Quartz could easily be worn by either sex. Men seem to be drawn to this fragrance. Be prepared to get noticed when wearing Quartz! My husband adores this perfume--and he is incredibly finicky. When I was Christmas shopping this afternoon, a man actually followed me into a store and said "Oooohh. You smell sooo sexy!"

Quartz is suggestive of its name, cool stone, perhaps by a babbling brook, amongst dewy foliage under the morning sun. It is green but also just a shade sweet, crisp peaches and melons seasoned with bitter boxwood and cassis. If effervescence and powdery mossiness could fit into the same room, it would be Quartz. They fit, they mingle, they shake hands, embrace, and then realize they need to turn out the lights. Firmly unisex, an unsuspecting gentleman might come across this handsome bottle with no indication of gender (until its latter iterations where "femme" would be added), ponder its whirlpool vortex cap and sleek modernism and smell it, thinking to himself, "mmm, Eau Sauvage with added dimension and swagger? Don't mind if I do." No matter what the gender, Quartz exudes an understated sophistication underlined by its earthy, woody, outdoorsy dry down. Man, the 70s were a great time for fragrance. A hidden gem.

This scent surprised me in a positive sense. The first few times,I did not know if I would dismiss it once and for all,or at least I`d like it a little. I took out the bottle now and then sprayed a bit thought it was a sharp mourn with hairspray as the "lead singer" of the group. After a few weeks I thought about what,repeatedly smells so fresh, clean,attractive but straightforward. I must have mixed several fragrances and produced this lovely scent..then I tried several fragrances when the opportunity arose,in various places on the skin,and tried to convince me to distinguish where and what I sprayed them! Nowadays I know that it is by no means loud,I can take a ride even if the horse is a bit nervous/inexperienced,without "top gear goes in" before the start..

I received a sample of Molyneux Quartz Pour Femme (thanks Lavallectra) and I like it very much. It opens with beautiful, juicy, tangy citrus with a hefty dose of oakmoss. It reminds me of O De Lancome, which I had in my teens. I think Quartz leans more on the tangerine and oakmoss, and Lancome has more lemon. I'm going to have to re-think my perfume preferences. For many years, oakmoss and I did not get along. Having recently found Vent Vert, now Quartz, I'm keen to explore more chypres and see if my tastes might be changing. We never know when our perfume assumptions will be challenged. Mine certainly have been, and in a good way.

I have used and adored Quartz for about thirty years. That long term is surprising because some fragrances that I loved, I cannot bear now: Ecusson by Jean D'Albret, Robe d'un Soir by Carven, Quadrille by Balenciaga, Boucheron, Fidji. Perhaps, it is because Quartz is not as strong a fragrance. Does anyone know whether the perfumers change the method of making the older fragrances so that they don't smell the same? Are they using chemicals instead of naturals now? I'll have to try Diorella some of you mentioned because I think it is important to change your fragrance from time to time so that you don't lose the scent.

Quartz is a new discovery for me. It reminds me of CD Eau Sauvage, Diorella, Cristalle, Armani Pour Homme. All are classic fragrances with green citrus vibe. I love them all. Quartz is a very good fragrance but doesn't really last a long time as an edp. Perhaps the original formulation from the 70's must have been perfect. I wear this as a man and it is a vintage clean and fresh scent. If you like the others mentioned above, you can blindbuy this with no regrets. Absolutely unisex. A hidden gem.

I would describe this as a green chypre. My nose smells something like a slightly bitter citrus at the top. It is balanced out with an almost sweet patchouli underneath. Gorgeous....so well combined making an interesting interplay between sharp and sweet. This is a timeless fragrance. It has a fresh aliveness to it with a woody sweetness in the background to give it depth. This perfume becomes a soft skin scent rather quickly. I wish that it projected more and had stronger lasting power

For me...This is a classy, sophisticated, timeless scent. It's absolutely beautiful and so feminine. I put this in the league of Rive Gauche and Cristalle. If you like those, you will love Quartz! My mom wore the original and I can detect a difference, truth be told, I prefer this one. Longevity is good but sillage is quite soft on me. This is a classic scent for a classy lady.

This is a very unusual and multi dimensional perfume. I've never smelled something like this before. It's a bit lemony, sweet and bitter at the same time. A very interesting combination. As time passes it becomes sweeter and more feminine. A great perfume with character which if I had to give it a name, I would call it "Different".

One of the most wonderful perfumes in the world, classic, current, modern, inimitable, sexy,,,, There is no other like it, only in its entirety. I love it. Always ask what fragrance you are wearing. unforgettable

My signature scent of the 80's. I thought it was discontinued for I haven't seen it in the 2000's. If I see it again I will definitely buy it. I would call this a WOODY CHYPRE.

Oh Gosh yes this was the fragrance of my youth. When I wore it I felt beautiful n so sexy. Yes n it did make me feel sophisticated n wealthy!

Quite similar to vintage EAU SAUVAGE by DIOR in the drydown and DIORELLA although I don't really smell the "peachy" notes in QUARTZ.

Vintage QUARTZ is very similar to Chanel's CRISTALLE.

1977 Quartz Edp reviewed. Top Notes: Bergamot, Grapefruit zest, Mandarin orange, Lemon Heart Notes : Honeysuckle, Iris. Jasmine Lily of the valley, Carnation, Rose Base Notes: Oakmoss Vetiver, Patchouli Sandalwood, Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice for sweet tones) Please remember in its time, fresh green Chypres were coveted for youth/younger generation. Quartz joins its cohorts of Diorella, Ysl Y, Miss Worth, Calandre, Cristalle and related idea of Ricci Signoricci 2. The note list above is accurate in my wearing of a vintage bottle. Fresh bright citrus lemon, bergamot and bitter grapefruit rind introduce Quartz. A powdery creamy iris sets the stage for the other florals. They smell fresh and blooming like a walk in nature. Green rooty vetiver, patchouli and oakmoss give it the natural green flooring. Licorice adds sweet tones with the honeysuckle to the fresh florals to offset the bitter citrus opening. The LOV gives it a soapy cleaness and the carnation lends more aeromatic like a fresh florists carnation rather than its spicy tones. Sandalwood gives this texture and lends powdery support to the iris in my wearing. This is the Spring, Summer or hot Autumn reach. Yes its an older genre we rarely see anymore but a good pick for hot climates. If you love Chypres..this is your hot weather Chypre as standard Chypres tend to flourish in cooler weather. A refined wear. An echo of when the earth was green, fresh and full of optimism. Quartz edp 1977.

This is a lovely spring or summer perfume. On my skin it opens with a burst of green notes or aldehydes or both, but I see they are not listed in the notes. These are gone almost as soon as they appear, and then I get a brief soliflore, I think it's the jasmine. That is also gone quickly, then the soft blend of orris root, sandalwood, melon and peach appear. The other florals and the oakmoss are faint. I love the opening of this perfume on my skin. Maybe it's a little similar to Cristalle. I bought this blind after reading reviews that it was similar to Diorella. This might be Diorella's shy sister. I like this very much. I may spring for a larger bottle after I go through my mini. It may help with the expense of my Diorella addiction. :) I have reached the drydown just as I have written this, and the oakmoss is stronger now but tempered with the cedar and a bit of benzoin. I get no amber or musk on my skin.

I really like this. It has that your skin but better thing going on. But that's also it's flaw. Major drawback is lack of silage and longevity. The light silage became a skin scent 30 minutes after application. I'll have to spray this on clothes in the future to see if that helps increase silage and longevity. It's very inexpensive though. I purchased 100ml for $15.00 so I can spray away. While I like this scent I don't love it simply because of the performance issues. Still, I think this would be fantastic during the super humid days of the summer when you don't want to wear anything because it would just make you feel worse. I don't see any danger of that with this scent simply because it has such a dry quality to it that I think it might actually help you stay cool. Anyway, that's when I plan on using this scent.

Fresh, somewhat soapy, complex and quite alive. I am having a hard time discerning the specific notes here. This is a good thing! This is one of those perfumes where the notes mix together seamlessly and create a beautiful abstract whole. To my untrained nose, this is like a sort of soapy Chypre. Feminine but still abstract, mossy and floral, serene but complex. Understated but not linear. A bit old-fashioned but in a good way... And very very wearable. Office-friendly, child-appropriate and adult women-appropriate as well. I only own a mini, but if I had a full size I could see it becoming a workhorse in my daily perfume rotation. I can smell the carnation, the moss, something vaguely soapy and warm and a delicious, warm human musk base. Good and enjoyable.

Think about DRYDOWN of First by Van Cleef & Arpels or Diorella. The same direction but Quartz is smoother and not so loud. Good cheapie, smells much more expensive. Review for the EDP vial sample from Fragrancenet (black card). Very calm wearable chypre. If you like them, Quartz is a safe and cheap blind buy. Very feminine, for the evening or date, not not for the office or gym. Opening made me think about luxury soap. Timeless. Never tried vintage, to my nose modern version is good.

An older-fashion green chypre to my nose, with excellent longevity and sillage. It has a fruity-floral opening, more floral in the mid-tones while retaining a crispness The dry-down reflects that chypre oaky-mossy tone. It is lovely, easy to wear, and it is clearly a child of the late 70-early 80's larger than life fragrances.

Just adding some new points to the previous review: Fresh but in a dry and abstract way, and not the sporty fresh or intellectual fresh, but a complex and natural, human freshness. I really am enjoying it as a good, honest, delightful day to day scent which is special. I think I would enjoy a full bottle!

Perfect for the office....I wore this when it first came out in the 1970's, when I wanted something light and fresh - but not heavily sexy - to wear to work. It was sooooo nice!

He was in the first time of perfumists and this is one of the most remarkable fragrances , like Ysatiz, Vivre and Chanel n5 .

That burst of citruses was one of my favourite smells ever! ages ago....I wish I could smell it again!

Bah ! With that i really know that chypre are not for me, at all !!! The first seconds are amazing , because of the citrus notes , the first seconds ONLY !!! After that it's an horribly down to hearth heavy scent ... I think my great Granny had this (no kidding) >< So for snotty very old ladies only .

Magical, just magical and enchanting! Scent of who knows what in fact is know to be fragrant (a), that breaks the dates and times with characteristic of a period in which the act of perfuming consisted apart from being with a scent applied itself, but in the certainty of being dress to please someone or an audience. Quartz pour Femme is a classic Moulyneux Cyprus 1977 this period that perfumery houses strove among themselves, in their releases, with the purpose of those who cast most bottled pump time. The fragrance opens with a citrus and deep powdery explosion, with old makeup nuances, due to the very dry Iris presence noticeable and pronounced right from the exit. At its heart its class increases with chunky flowers, highlighting the heaviest Iris that at first, red roses in large doses and shoots Mandressilvas, giving the fragrance, in my perception, the same "dry down" of delicious champagne Yvresse YSL basically both have the same combination of iris and red roses that characterize this similarity. His farewell is virile, starts growing mustaches and sideburns this woman and she begins to thicken his voice is quite prominent the presence of oak moss humidified by serene, sequinho Vetiver, almost roasted, and touches of Patchouli roots that resemble houses of natural essences of my region (Pará - Brazil), which markets the manipulated plant for various purposes. Quartz pour Femme, ensures intense perfuming and a fickle golden for more than 9 h, and boot praise and / or twisted noses when it is the case! Purchased this years before and gave it away. I felt I could not pull it off on my skin. Fast forward, saw it again on Ebay. Bigger bottle, great price. It was a tester with description on the bottle. I personally like to blend scents and this one you just don't mix with just any fragrance. It has to definitely be complimentary, if you are willing to blend or you will smell like a tart! I will get the nerve up one day to wear it. Meanwhile, I will search for a good match or just a bodycream or lotion to soften the mandarine, honeysuckle, pamplemousse, hyacinth and Jasmine for some reason seems too "bright" on my skin and base notes are patchouli and sandalwood. The other notes listed above were not on the bottle, I wished they were, that would give it depth. This is not a negative comment on this fragrance because that is why I purchased it again. Will let you know when I find that match or I will wear it alone and chance how it developes on my skin during the day.

I was offput by Quartz at first try because it smelled like a chic 1960's hairspray in the opening. I put my bottle away, thinking I'd resell it on ebay. But I revisited it recently and decided to give it another chance. Boy am I sure glad I did! It develops into a very smooth, elegant, refined cyphre floral with citrus undertones (I pick up the tangerine). Soft, feminine, clean and fresh. Not offensive or synthetic at all. I started using it as my daytime scent a few weeks ago and have layered it with baby powder. It becomes sheer tender loveliness after a few hours! Molyneux Quartz is pure class, a truly fine French perfume. Some say it reminds them of Diorella or Cristalle. If you like those classics, I recommend you give Quartz a try. Extreme quality at an extremely affordable price - I've seen 3.4 oz. bottles on sale on ebay for $9.95 with free shipping - what a bargain! Can't wait to try more Molyneux scents.

I am happy with my blind buy despite not very favourable reviews for this perfume. I find it refreshingly uplifting and delicate, green-herbal-mossy with some very thin flowery hint showing through in the middle stage of development. In no way heavy, sweet, musky, honey, or any other current trend, Quartz has a transparent quality of the fresh, very distant tangerine, a hint of green juicy grass, with some delicate aroma of the white flowers showing through. To me, it is blended very smoothly, sits close to skin but is lasting, and, in spite of the masculine sounding notes of citrus, vetiver and oak moss, is surprisingly feminine. I can imagine it comes from the 70s, even though some reviewers mention that the current version is completely different. It has a retro vibe but not in an obvious way. Like "quartz" itself, it is light, transparent, sparkling and timeless.

thIs fragrance is now very different from the original one, it does not have anything in common with it, although the name, the box and the bottle are the same. The original version did smell basically of green tangerine, they used to say came from Calabria. It was a very unusual fragrance, sharp and slightly bitter, with plenty of character. Now I would classify it as a green chypre. It does remind me, in the drydown, like the members who voted above, of Diorella and Crystalle. It does smell of galbanum and oak moss. But I find it more similar to Y. I do like it a lot, find it very pleasant and sophisticated, although I think the sillage is not that good. I detect in the opening what I think is mint, in a very nice contrast with a warm patchouli plus oakmoss base. i think the green galbanum character comes from Vetyver, the way it is combined with the other notes.

If a cold stone had a scent, this would be it. Quartz is a befitting name for this fragrance. It is cool and dry, not fruity or sweet or woody although it belongs in an earthy green category. However, no one singular note stands out over another. Quite well blended and rather ingeniously crafted. I could see this as an extremely safe "office wear" type of perfume. Fresh, not overpowering, not looking to draw attention, not looking to "turn on" the boss. It reminds me of the 70's, perhaps it was frequently worn back then having been designed in '77. I've never had a fragrance like this in my collection. I can imagine spritzing this on liberally any day, any time. Refreshing all over spray or even as a deodorant! Back to my comment about it reminding me of the 70's..I like that. It was my favorite decade.

In the dead of winter I seem to be stuck on fresh and green fragrances. And I'm not sure if this review is going under the correct Quartz though. My bottle is a 100ml EDP tester with a description of the fragrance on the back, in French. Translated through babel fish: Flowered Green fruity agreement on Modern Chyper bottom manderine green, grapefruit, jasmine, Chevrefeuille and hyacinth, patchouli Singapore sandal mysore I have to agree this is very green, crisp and fresh, and a tad sweet, but not sickening sweet. The drydown is a cozy patchouli. Silliage and longevity are great. But the bottle's notes do not match up with any of Molyneux's Quartz, Femme or Quartz Modern. Whichever it is, I'm going to put this away until spring. I need something warm right now :)

Oh the memories!!! I wore this in my late teens, early twenties and I looooooved it. Reviewing all the scents that I used to love as a teen and the ones the I love now, I can say that I'm a pretty consistent floral-chypre kinda fan, who sometimes strays to the green-fresh-fruity realm. But back to Quartz, I remember the smell as sexy, intriguing and somehow clean and round. It gave a strong, in charge woman vibe. I wish I had been as confident a lady as I appeared by wearing this piece of beauty... but alas!! As I was naive I was blissfully ignorant and did not know that this was too big for me back then. I wish I could find it today, I think it would sit really well alongside my Coco Mademoiselle, Elle and Beautiful in my increasingly insane perfume collection.

Definitely a crisp fresh green smell. I can imagine this was divine compared to what they produced in the 70s but 40 years on it smells cheap. A little soapy alcoholic and bugspray if I'm honest. I get no fruit notes either. Won't be a keeper in my perfume box... *edit: few days in I like it better, but still not a love...lasting power not amazing, you can only smell it faintly and up close after about half hour. ** this is growing on me quite a bit the sharp crispness I think I am acqiring a taste for it which happens sometimes. Still not amazing lasting, but definitely a like. I have 100+ niche samples for swap within Europe - updated spreadsheet of samples on my profile, get in touch!

Have just seen a shameless price asked for this little darling ,but am sure things are not right with that ad. Anyway, I decided it's time to speak up and do the due ,thing that I was to do looooong back. This beauty with v little lasting power, who needs to be reapplied over and over again is twin to Shocking You - Schiaparelli . On me Azzaro 9 is not resembling to Quarz , Azzaro is mostly about a flower ,linden flowers ( need to check again). What Diorella is doing on the reminds me of ,is a big mystery to me . Have never understood why on the reminds me of list ,also reminds me nots are placed and stay there forever. Strange thing the logic,especially the illogical one :-D

Current formula: top and mid phases are nice, with pretty green and floral notes. I just don't like the overly thick, peachy dry-down. Might like to try a vintage version, but I think this one is just not for me because of the fruity aspects. Very sophisticated scent. Update 8/1/24: Wearing this again in summer, I like it more and get the nice interplay between freshly fruity and classically spicy, along with a woody backbone, light florals and a touch of citrus. But the current formula feels as if it's cologne strength. It's meant to be an edp. The sophistication is still clear and comes across, making it very enjoyable to wear.

Yes! Very much like Diorella and maybe Histoire D'Amour by Aubusson. Right up my alley. Quartz is greener than this page suggests. And it's quite bitter/dry/"twiggy" after 10 minutes- but I like that. A true 70s chypre. A good cheap blind buy if you are into that. I think I like this better than Diorella-- the melon is stronger in Diorella- and I'm not a fan of melon. Of course, this seems to lack Dior quality. And while my Dior is vintage EDT- this Quartz EDP is new/modern from Fragrancenet. I love layering Diorella EDT with Mitsouko EDT- so I imagine Quartz will be good with Mitso too.

I really don't get these notes listed, here's what I get: mint, lemon, basil, bergamot, jasmine, cyclamen, coriander, oakmoss, musk, cedar. I also perceive Quartz as a chypre floral, agree with the reviews that mention similarities to Diorella and CRISTALLE. I'm sure it's the basil. And totally agree that this smells like money, to me basil smells elegant as in old money. A beautiful fragrance for a lazy day shopping for antiques in a quaint little french town, and maybe coffee with pastries afterwards. Summer staple.

I am sure I will need to give this one some more time but my intial impression is that I like this, could become a love. My taste are changing and I am enjoying fragrance with sweets less and less. There is the tiniest bit of sandalwood and amber in the drydown, which I can't stop sniffing. My bottle looks nothing like what is pictured. It is more squat and flat and the cap is cut on a wavy diagonal.There is no designation of femme or homme. Im going to give it a full test run out in the cold tomorrow!

Molyneux Quartz is definitely an underrated GEM! Although I'd say it's an acquired taste but in the best of ways because it's just so unique and so darned elegant but not in a pretentious, overly mature way. I'm in my late 20's and simply ADORE this scent. However, my nose isn't well developed enough to pick out individual notes though but this perfume is seriously unlike anything I've ever encountered before! Sorta like the Prince or Cher of perfumes!

My scent when I was a teenager. very fresh and clean. I could wear it again in summer or in the office since its the kind on non intrusive fragance ideal when you work around other people. Its also timeless. It brings sweet memories to me, of all the hopes and dreams I had. It was also my introduction to the world of fragances and I could not ask for a better one. It's responsible for my current adiction to fragances and scents.

I used to wear this all the time in the eighties in my late teens and early twenties - my mother had a bottle which I sampled and fell in love with. I recently found it again and had to have it. I sprayed it on yesterday and kept thinking it reminded me of something else I wear. It took me a while but I figured it out. Hermes Eau des Merveilles. No wonder I love it too! Both are so clean, crisp, fresh and elegant!

Marvellous fragance! Unforgettable! Bohemian like an fall evening in Paris. For me it "sounds" like LAir du Temps and the first Dior season (Diorissimo, Dioressense and Diorella). Really love it! At first snif it appaers to me like a mature champain drinks in a green forest with a fresh dew... Pleasaint, calm down but really notorious. A great icon... My mom has the last drops of a 90s bottle.

You rule! :D Now I'm curious about the earliest version of Quartz - something I'll never know... :( Quartz was launched in 77 - the year I was born - and it makes me much more curious (because I like to know anything about that year, a very special year, for sure, hahaha... silly :S ). Whatever...I like my "Quartz pour Femme"! :D

I am a fragrance snob, an I fell in love with Quartz maybe 10 years ago, but can't recall how it happened. I especially like to wear Quartz in the fall when the air is cooler. I can wear this to work without feeling like I am trying to seduce or overwhelm anyone. I enjoy this clean, woodsy and floral combination fragrance and have an extra 1 or 2 in the cabinet.
