A*Men Pure Malt

Thierry Mugler Pure Malt EDT opens with a moderate projection of boozy, sweet, citrus, and coffee notes. The opening is bold, aromatic, unique, delectable, and intense. The citrus, fruity, whiskey, and coffee are the opening noticeable notes. The fruity note comes up as a fruity candy sweet note as opposed to natural fruits. The malt and whiskey are prominent, and further grow as the fragrance dries down, their alcoholic, and boozy nature give the fragrance a unique style, bold, and casual. The bergamot and orange add a sharp, citrusy sweet note but are short-lived, both, but particularly the bergamot, start dissipating soon after the fragrance is applied. The coffee is also noticeable, a blond and delectable touch that contributes mostly as a projecting accord. As the fragrance moves towards its dry down, the amber, musk, and vanilla start developing, adding their sweet notes and making the fragrance feel dry; simultaneously, the patchouli, musk, and cedar develop as support notes adding a light green, musky and fresh woody touch. The musk is inoffensive, it just improves the sharpness and projection of the fragrance. The fragrance has a few but noticeable opening to dry down changes, the opening is fresh, citrusy, boozy, fruity sweet, moist, and with a noticeable coffee note. As time passes, the amber and vanilla turn the fragrance dry and very projecting. The last noticeable change has to do with the initial projection which takes a step up to strong. Once Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt EDT has reached its full dry-down, it can be summarized as a strong projection, sweet vanilla, amber, boozy, malt, whiskey, and coffee fragrance with and green and musky accords. The fragrance feels ambery, bold, boozy, candy-sweet, casual, comforting, delectable, dense, delicious, dry, exotic, expensive, fruity, gourmand, high-quality, imposing, inviting, long-lasting, masculine, modern, natural, nicely-blended, nocturnal, persistent, playful, resinous, rich, seductive, sweet, warm, wild, and very pleasant. BLIND-BUY: Yes, but only if you are familiar with its main notes. SIMILAR: These are examples of fragrances in the same genre. • Bentley for Men Intense EDP is a superb, strong, boozy rum, smokey incense, woody, leathery, resinous, spicy, and green fragrance. • Carolina Herrera CH Prive EDT features whiskey and sweet notes, a great scent. • Giorgio Armani Code Profumo EDP is a very good, intense, sweet, tonka, leather, spicy cardamom, and nutmeg fragrance. • Jesus del Pozo Halloween Man X EDT is a good, sweet tonka, boozy whiskey, coffee, and spicy cinnamon fragrance. • Kilian Black Phantom EDP is a fantastic, intense, delicious coffee, boozy rum, sweet caramel, and dark chocolate fragrance. • Killian Single Malt EDP is a great, sweet, vanilla, fruity plum, boozy whiskey-like, and resinous fragrance. • Lacoste Pour Homme EDT Men is good but very soft, sweet vanilla, rum, cinnamon, pink pepper, and plum fragrance. • Nasomatto Baraonda is a fantastic, intense, slightly sweet, boozy, whiskey, and woody fragrance. • Nishane Fan Your Flames is a great, intense, rum, tobacco, woody, and tonka fragrance. • Pasha De Cartier Parfum is a great, intense, very sweet, resinous, sandalwood, benzoin, tonka, boozy, liquor, musky, ambrocenide, and labdanum fragrance. • Rochas Man EDT is mild, delicious, sweet, coffee, vanilla, and resinous fragrance. • Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt EDT is a fantastic, strong, sweet vanilla, boozy, malt, whiskey, resinous amber, and coffee fragrance. Ah, Pure Malt. I've had this bottle for a while, having finally tracked it down from a private seller. Early reformulated "Mugler" version. *Edit: I've since found out, via entirely reputable sources, that most of the A*Men line, Pure Malt included, was never reformulated. Thierry Mugler, Mugler, even Creation - all the same juice.* This one was on my radar for a while. I remember expecting a dark, boozy, whiskey bomb of a scent, and being shocked how...not, it was. Nevertheless, even today, as my tastes adhere heavily towards the niche and indie world of natural perfumery, Pure Malt remains one of my favorite designers. It's insanely fruity. Not in a Skittles way, but the combination of patchouli, fruity notes, and whatever "whiskey" accord is here, lend themself to a really unique take on "fruity". The patchouli is noticeable. It's a clean patchouli, and it's more defined when smelling up close. In the air, the patchouli is more of those "fizzy pop" incense stick patchoulies. The fruitiness trends towards somewhat of an orange creamsicle note, and there's definitely a vanillic base that plays into that. I get somewhat of a rubbery note - not off- putting, but a dense, sweet, clean rubber. As it settles, Pure Malt focuses much more on notes of praline, caramel, and butterscotch. A sweet, candied, almost creamy nuttiness. Maybe this is the "malt" ingredients. Looking at it that way, ome cam draw similarities to a sweet Speyside single malt. It isn't particularly natural smelling, and it's an odd duck for sure, but it's undeniably unique. A tad youthful, but not immature. Playful. This could work well in a club setting, just as much as an upscale gala. Performance is ridiculous. It's loud, projection is far reaching, and longevity is no slouch. It doesn't take much to get the job done. Paired with its quirky, almost 90's vibe, and unique profile, this one is sure to get noticed. Ive been stopped several times wearing this one, by both women and men. Yes, it's discontinued, hard to sample, and the price is going up. No, it won't be for everyone, and I think there's a lot of misunderstanding (due to the name) of what this smells like. At $100 or less, I think this is a worthy addition to any collection, and other than Pure Havane (which is still quite different), I honestly can't think of anything else that smells even remotely similar to this, and for that, I think this deserves a spot in the hall of fame. I adore this one, and it's absolutely worth sampling - if you can. Tldr: Smells like a quirky gay pride parade - fruity, unique, easy to love, and possesses a very individual DNA. Loud, youthful, fruity, but not immature. Very sexy, flamboyant, sweet, and edible. Not dark, dense, and boozy. Can easily wear in the warmer months, clubbing, or dressed (somewhat) up. 10/10. YES!!!... It was a LOOOONG time where I did not have this, but kept it on my radar, just kind of thinking that it was gonna be a fragrance that I'd really like, or even love, but I somehow managed to underestimate just how fucking good this stuff is you guys. I have a Thierry Mugler bottle, I haven't checked the batch code or anything, but it's fantastic. This is the kind of fragrance that when you smell it it immediately just improves your mood because it smells so good. Of course, if you don't like this fragrance, you're not only not going to like it but you're going to fucking hate it because of how obnoxiously loud it is. It opens up strong, fruity, boozy, and with an underlying A*Men signature DNA of patchouli, coffee, etc. All of the notes of the original are present, they're just dialed back ever so slightly to make way for the boozy and candied fruits notes that are most dominant here. As someone who absolutely loves A*Men, and also fruity/boozy sweet masculine fragrances, this is such a home run and I don't know why I didn't get it sooner because it really was a "blue chip" fragrance for me. I imagine Pure Havane will be a similar experience. Anyways, as I've described the fragrance, I don't know if I've emphasized enough how well this performs. It's very loud, it projects with the heaviest of projectors I have in my collection, and lasts just as long as well. Perhaps some of my parfum extraits are a bit stronger but not by much. With that said, this one may be too much for office wear or formal wear. If you're going to a casual get together with friends at a bar though, or a club, my god you will be the best smelling guy there. I think this works best in the winter and fall, and at night, but fuck all that wear it when you want. Here in Minnesota you can easily get away with it in the spring and even summer nights, but you do you. It is very masculine, no unisex stuff going on here but ladies if you wanna wear it, go for it. I encourage that shit, I think fundamentalism in fragrances is silly and if you want to wear something masculine you should and the same is true of men who want to wear feminine leaning fragrances. Just go for it if it's in your heart to do so. To cap it off here, this one is beautiful and I recommend it to anybody. Older, young, whatever, this is a fragrance for everybody if you're comfortable with what I've described above. I give it an easy A+.

Launched in 2009, Mugler's A*Men Pure Malt is one of the most iconic editions of the A*Men line and, without a doubt, one of my favorites. Created as a tribute to renowned Scottish whiskies, this perfume evokes all the sophistication of aged barrels, smoke, heat and liquid luxury — translated in an intense, addictive and extremely refined fragrance. Olfactory Pyramid Top notes: Fruits, Orange and Bergamot – a slightly citrusy and sweet opening, with an effervescent and fruity touch. Heart notes: Malt, Whiskey, Patchouli, Coffee and Cedar – here the perfume comes into its own: alcoholic, warm, slightly bitter and resinous, with patchouli and cedar giving depth. Base notes: Peat, Vanilla, Amber and Musk – the base is where the magic happens. Elegant smoke (from the peat), balanced sweetness from the vanilla, a comforting amber and musk that finishes with creaminess. The performance is excellent: Projection: moderate to high in the first 2 hours Standardness: between 8 and 10 hours on the skin Sillage: noticeable and elegant, without being invasive It is a perfume that draws attention without being loud, ideal for those looking for something striking, but with class. Occasions Pure Malt shines on cold nights, dates, special dinners, elegant bars or any occasion in which you want to exude a mysterious and refined air. It is not ideal for hot weather or for casual everyday use, as its proposal is more adult, sensual and alcoholic — it calls for moments that match its complexity. Final considerations A*Men Pure Malt is a masterpiece of designer perfumery. While maintaining the bold DNA of the A*Men line (with patchouli, coffee and sweet notes), it stands out for its maturity and sophistication, thanks to the whiskey accord that is incredibly well-crafted. It is a fragrance that mixes comfort with boldness, luxury with rebellion — and that is why it remains one of the best flankers of the A*Men line, if not the best. If you are looking for a perfume that impresses effortlessly, that combines originality with elegance and that carries a unique signature, Pure Malt is a must. One of my favorites and a true gem that, unfortunately, has already been discontinued, which makes it even more special. Final score: 9.6/10 (It could be a 10, if it were still easier to find...)

You're casually walking into a night club alone, on your way in you see a bunch of tools and juice headed idiots. You can smell their uninspired cloud of Acqua Di Gio, and One Million like the unholy dinner your neighbor in the apartment above you cooks every Thursday night, it's foul, obnoxious and in your face, but you play it cool, you've got an ace up your sleeve, you're wearing Pure Malt. You walk past all those wannabe's who are dying to impress girls far too intoxicated to consent as they drink their Michaleob Light and Dos Equis, that's when you see her. Tucked away in a corner with her friends drinking cosmos is a perfect 10, and you've got the confidence to approach her. You make a B-Line in her direction, and the heads of women everywhere begin to turn as they catch a whiff of your super bad ass fragrance, they stop dancing with whatever douche bags they're with and all begin to follow behind you, some taking off their panties in the process so that they may throw them in your direction. Guys are getting pissed off, but you don't notice, nor do you care. The crowd parts, similar to the way Moses parted the sea, and the perfect 10 finally looks up from her drink in your direction, you close in with about a foot between the both of you, and you look her right in the eyes and say "Sup?" She goes weak in the knees from the olfactory orgasm that Pure Malt delivered to her nostrils just a half a second after a word left your mouth. Right then and there she takes off her clothes, she can't control herself and has to have you this very moment, and you're like "Sure." So it's going down, and all those girls who were following you are forming a line to jump your bones next. The music stops playing, and everyone just starts cheering you on, a few dude's head's explode from shock, but the casualties are minimal. After you're done with all the women in the club they give you their numbers and they're like "Call me!", and you say you will, but they know you wont. That my friends, that is Pure Malt.
