God... so disappointing. I’m a woman who loves spicy smoky resinous masculine-leaning scents, and the combination of marine and amber sounded fascinating, so I ordered a tiny sample and had high hopes. The first spray is absolutely noxious, made me wrinkle my nose in disgust (a very rare reaction for me). It smelled like toxic chemicals spilling out of a sewer. The first few minutes are pure gasoline in the worst way - and I say that as someone who really doesn’t mind the smell of gasoline. But this smells like a sweaty leather-skinned 75 year old man walked out of a barbershop, filled up his tank at a gas station on a grimy stretch of PCH with a mountain of fish rotting nearby, and then CHLOROFORMED you and threw you in the trunk. The sea note does come through strong, as does the citrus and the wood, but none of it works together at all. It just smells simultaneously musty and harshly chemical, which is so sad, because I think the vision of a fragrance with fresh ocean breeze at the top and sultry jazz bar at the base is beautiful. Alas... I will say that as it dries down, it becomes much less offensive. It turns into a generic aftershave-smelling men’s cologne. It’s fine. Strong and headache-inducing. If I smelled it on a man I wouldn’t run screaming (I’d just cover my drink and politely pretend to have a boyfriend). Still never quiiite loses that rotten diesel and mothball quality though. For $300 a bottle... I have to laugh. Absolutely not.
