Cuir Velours

This is my favorite perfume. In the entire world. Thus far, anyway. I couldn't even review this one because I loved it so much that I didn't know how to review it. I'll just try to be objective here, as it is the only way to keep calm and not go crazy. The one problem (gasp!) about this that I recently discovered is that I can only wear it in the spring. This is so disheartening to me, and I am afraid it is due to this that it may lose its place as my #1. It needs to heat up on my skin in order for me to experience the love. When I first spray it on, OR when I spray this in the fall, winter, or in any environment where it is dry, it doesn't "turn" on me the way it should. It doesn't need to be hot out, but there needs to be a quiet heat that makes my skin a little moist in order to get the effect I want. And when it blooms, boy is this a masterpiece. This is TRUTH in a bottle. It magically does its thing, and in addition, it makes events in my day go especially well. My special someone goes obsessive without realizing that it is my perfume. Its memory influences months after the experience. To me, when this perfume WORKS, this is a combination of immortelle, suede, leather, labdanum, and an x factor which i like to think of as "Bloom", which is what makes this special. They all mix together and put me in a honeyed trance. It blooms mid-day and then lasts all night, until the next morning. Unfortunately, the only notes that come out in the winter or dry weather on my skin are bitter tar, leather, sour tobacco, and a slight peppery nuance. I don't dislike these notes, but together in this perfume, they are not pleasant to my nose in the wrong season. Even with this problem, I rate this a 10/10. The times that it works for me make up for when I can't wear it. It is that good when it blooms.

After testing Corpus Equus, the other leather-dominant Naomi Goodsir scent, I wanted to compare it to this. They each are very different takes on leather. Where CE was a challenging animalic woody leather, Cuir Velours, the earlier release, is an interesting (and unexpected) sweet suede scent. It is another artistic, avant-garde scent from this house, and is utterly charming and quite wearable. CV opens with an unexpected sweet immortelle note that competes with suede for dominance. That said, it is wonderfully cohesive, and utterly compelling - unlike anything I have tried before. Naomi Goodsir perfumes are creative at the best of times, and CV is no exception. It is primarily sweet and fruity with some stickiness underneath. It complements the realistic smooth suede accord beautifully, if making for an unpredictable combination. As it develops, the tobacco emerges, more hay-like than smoky, adding a nice counterpoint to the sweetness. The incense that emerges at this stage adds both smokiness and a balsamic undertone that complements the suede-immortelle accord nicely. The sugary-boozy rum is evident here, realistic but restrained, complementing the sweetness and amber. The suede and sweet immortelle remain, and it fades to a dry, sweet amber skin scent. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. It is unisex despite the sweetness. It is an autumn/winter scent, best worn for evening occasions. A wearable olfactory artwork, CV is a beautifully-balanced scent comprising very smooth suede alongside rich sweetness. It isn't cloying or overly sweet (and I'm not a lover of sweetness in perfume in general). I find this deeply satisfying, an unusual take on sweetness that feels grown-up and luxurious, yet utterly cool. 4.5/5.

The opening of Cuir Velours is gorgeous; tobacco and leather support a beautiful beautiful boozy fruit set of top notes. Peachy, rummy and a quick flash of something that smells to me like fresh strawberry. The actual fruit, with its tartness intact, rather than a sugary candy idea of strawberry. All of this is given loft by the incense note. The balance is so good that the whole thing sings as a rich whole. The fleeting fresh fruit notes give way to a more raisiny rum fruit note and the smokier tones of the incense and tobacco. The effect is warm, sexy and sophisticated. The transition it does make is into a softer, amber version of itself. The leather, smokiness and incense remain subtle but detectable, overlaid with a softened version of the boozy fruit heart of the fragrance. The balance of this fragrance is noteworthy, with all aspects working in harmony. Cuir Velours is sexy, perfect for nighttime and cooler weather, when something warm and smoky is called for. I get fantastic sillage and longevity from this fragrance. When I initially assembled the pump action spray that ships with the bottle, I thought the spray result was a little mean at first, but in reality I wouldn't want anything more. The strength of this fragrance is very much an Eau de Parfum. All in all a great investment and this winter I have been wearing this a lot already.

On my first wear, it was a sweet immortelle bomb with almost no leather. (Maybe it needed more time to settle?) I'm very glad I gave it a second chance because this time, the notes were exactly as listed. The heady mix of syrupy immortelle, leather, and rum dries down to a soft suede topped by a more powdery immortelle. This scent doesn't strike me as gourmand at all, and I appreciate the hint of powder because it counters immortelle's urine tendencies; however, this drydown might be too feminine for lovers of other leather fragrances. The sillage is fairly intimate and the longevity is over eight hours. This is the second Naomi Goodsir I've tried after Nuit de Bakelite, and I noticed that both fragrances seem to eschew subtlety in the opening in favor of a more compelling and long-lasting drydown. To me, this is a good thing, because who doesn't want to smell nice for longer? However, this is a brave move when many perfumes are acquired based on 30 second impressions, whether from influencer highlights or a test strip spray in a store. As with Nuit de Bakelite, I suggest you try a small amount on skin; you may be pleasantly surprised.

I discovered this somewhat hidden gem during my earlier obsession with immortelle. Here, it feels herbal and unexpected, adding that perfectly imperfect moment that makes the whole thing interesting. Boozy, sweet rum notes bring a warm and luxurious feel to silky smooth suede that reads classy and restrained, all the while complementing what is a deliciously different, and dare I say restrained take on tobacco. Labdanum is on its best behaviour, with no funk and no bite, just well-mannered and suggestive, with the slightest hint of smoke. It sinks to the base of the composition and carries it through an elongated drydown that’s rich, syrupy, and perhaps slightly leathered. There’s sweetness from start to finish, bordering on that burnt sugar, resinous vibe, but never cloying and never threatening to tip into gourmand territory. I really like this. It’s an easy wear, and even though I’ve long moved on from my little immortelle phase, this remains a favourite in the genre for me.

Cuir Velours leather is a very kind, good, more than a musky leather is a soft suede and sweet. The fragrance feels quite linear and very little evolution. Since the beginning feel a pleasant note siempreviva rum and, below, the snuff that clarifies and adds a spicy soft suede this nice and sweet. The effect of labdanum is very soft and pale only provides warmth, but note that incense itself feels quite. This incense is not toasted, only a smoky soft that when mixed with musk favors a note as dusty, very similar as a whole to fragrances with olfactory style result D600 Carner, Dior Homme, Silver Iris, etc. The excellent quality, with good length and moderate wake. The composition is very good and convince RASQUINET again with the result. Rating: 7.5

People! I LOVE, LOVE!! This fragrance! Scent wise this is really what I was hoping to find in a fragrance however did not expect to find it in Cuir Velours. To me this is a boozy sweet Suede yet still soft type of fragrance. I'd give the entire composition a perfect 10. HOWEVER, in the projection and longevity department I feel it unfortunately lacks more strength. Projection in my opinion is just ok. When to me this is definitely a scent which is worth being a projection monster because I would like everyone around me to smell this, and they will thank me for it. And longevity wise this lasted me about 5 hours, maybe six on a 19 degrees Celsius day. Who knows, maybe in much colder weather this would perform better. I hope it eventually would!

Second sample of my discovery set. This is beautiful. Sweet, sexy and musky. The leather here is not animalic at all to me, more like shoe leather (suede), very clean. The tobacco is not smoky here, it's a dry tobacco, uplifted by the sweet amber. It's slightly boozy but not a drunken, harsh way. It's a very sexy, attention-grabbing scent, definitely suited for night outings and ideally dressed up. Lasting power is decent, on strip I still smell it 2 days later, on skin I got an easy 6 hours with decent projection. I tend to really enjoy what Julien Rasquinet does and again, he does not disappoint here.

This is undoubtably the smoothest leather you will ever smell. The sweetness in this definitely isn't for everyone and wasn't what I was expecting when I first sprayed this but I've quickly grown to adore it. The fragrance isn't as leathery as I was expecting either but I think it's for the better as it's done in such a mature and subdued way. Don't get me wrong it's probably the most prominent note here but unlike other leather fragrances it isn't in your face with that new car sort of smell. Sweet, smooth and superb 10/10

(edited 9/4/15) this is lovely from first sniff. it goes on oriental suede and then the labdanum comes out on the drydown. (insert smiley emoji with hearts for eyes.) i particularly love suedey scents and this one does not disappoint. it gets a bit of an effervescent boozy quality from the rum and tobacco i am guessing. i really have to say i love the incense and labdanum in this scent. i only have a sample of this, but the sillage is pretty subtle even when i slather it on, which is really my only complaint.

Mmmmm, this is a yummy and silky-smooth suede. It's quite different from the other scents in the Naomi Goodsir line (except maybe Or du Serail, but only in its mild sweetness). However, it does make me think of her comments about the fragrances being based on texture. The immortelle is less spicy than one might expect, and it kind of feels like there's a bit of iris in there. I also detect a tiny bit of raw honey, I think. A little sweet, but not sugary. I think this might be my second favourite. Lovely!

I received this perfume as part of a sample set and was willing to dislike it based on some of the less positive reviews here, but I just can't. This is some really potent stuff and seems much more oily than most fragrances (I can see where I sprayed it on my hand) From the opening on Cuir Velours envelops you in a cloud of lush suede, wax (crayons!) and booze. This is friendly yet voluptuous leather, very seducing. I am a man but can just as easily picture this on a woman. Very unisex.

Opens is very clean and powdery but it quickly sweetens up Aromatic suede and tobacco that comes off just a tiny bit smokey In the back are also some boozy hints The fragrance is uniquely sweet with immortelle and labdanum which comes off almost like a dirtier cinnamon The suede is well incorporated and blended with the other notes and it presenting very smooth, subtle and elegant At the same time it's also aromatic with tobacco and some incense smoke

This is quite literally Christmas in a bottle for me. Maple syrupy immortelle on a base of soft suede, lightly spiced and softly herbal. It smells like being wrapped up in your favourite scarf, holding your partner's hand while strolling the Christmas market illuminated by hanging lights. Wafts of whatever sweet and delicious confectionery is being prepared down the cobbled road swirl around the cold air to greet you. 100% gourmand IMO.

This one is something different very complex and deceiving very much a sweet suede with a bit of labdanum with a lot of immortelle making it herbal and spicy. Definitely never smelled anything like this before very devisive. Overall: 7.6/10 not super wearable but could be a unique scent to try to wear on certain days

What a pleasant fragrance is very wearable. I wish the horse smell of scent was more present and stronger, this is more like a incense rose and leather than a beautiful horsey 🐴 ( haha ) great stuff I love this one I wish it was a 100 ml because for a 50 ml is very expensive.

This is it. This one is smooth, slightly reminds me of a perfume my 7th grade crush wore. This is deep, smooth leather with a refined boozy smoky sweetness, its very abstract. This is something Tom Ford would make back at their peak years.

This perfume is pure olfactory refinement! A subtle cocktail of delicate leather, rum, pipe tobacco and immortelle. It is a virile, highly elegant yet gourmand perfume that I discovered thanks to Radjur Real Deep Kool on youtube.

I would describe this as candied leather. It's sweet and smooth, it really feels like wrapping yourself in a blanket made of suede and cotton candy. Absolutely stunning, I love everything this from this house!

Something about the playful, sweet, boozy accord reminds me of Pierre Guillaume's Paris Fidji.

Cuir Velours strikes as a balmy-incense fragrance with sweet-boozy facets. The leather note is subdued and smooth, more sort of suedey while a well restrained immortelle note paired to tobacco, add even more depth enhancing the general warmness of this composition. The fragrance leans towards the sweet side of the spectrum but it's perfectly executed and balanced to never feel heavy or cloying. I've seen somewhere comparisons to Daim Blond and, somehow, they make sense (at least IMO). There's a slight apricot-suede vibe going on which might indeed bring to mind of the aforementioned Lutens but, overall, Cuir Velours is more striking while still feeling plush and extremely rounded. The incense plays a relevant role providing a meditative facet and a modern twist. Other fragrances that came to mind for a reason or another are Trayee by Neela Vermeire (basically for the sweetish-incense quality) and 1740 (for the immortelle-tobacco-leather combo). With that said, I can't say CV is objectively similar to either. It more shares with them an overall vibe and a distant kinship to then create its own peculiar allure. A pleasure to wear for anyone into velvety oriental fragrances. Good projection and great lasting power. Bravo to Mrs.Goodsir. Rating: 7.5-8/10

191) Licked leather I absolutely do not know Naomi Goodsir, an Australian hat designer, and I readily admit having a little sigh at the idea of testing the two creations. Again poor creations sold very expensive to cover their mediocrity? (sorry but I still have the vile creations of Bond No. 9 in the nose) Both were created by Julien Rasquinet who was a pupil of Pierre Bourdon, worked under the wing of Christine Nagel for Mane, before embark as an independent. And at smelling its two latest creations, therefore the 2 Naomi Goodsir orders, that succeeded him really well. Cuir Velours is an oriental leather as its name indicates soft and cozy, with tasty notes of apricot, a rum(boozy) effect, which ends a little greedy and syrupy on skin but still a nice job on the matter and could easily join the harem of lovers of leathery tobacco as the new odalisque close to 1740 from HdeP. Good longevity and sillage. Too expensive-it's twice the price of 1740 and not as well composed. But bravo Julien, beau travail!

I get a lovely, realistic, gentle incense softened with the qualities of suede. Very noticable rum note underneath these 'fuzzy' smoky notes but only up close to my nose. Also a warm, 'golden' tone is present from the immortelle. I can't decide if I'd rather smell this on a man or a woman so true unisex methinks. I, too, get an apricot note. Or is that just an association w/ suede peach-fuzziness by now? ;) Later into the wearings of it I grew tired of the strong presentation of immortelle, which has begun to get more and more herbal dry on my skin, in every scent I mean, and reminds me too much of the desert I disliked in my youth (Southern CA). Associative, sure, but the strong immortelle presence on my skin made it less than a love for me, too much of a dry character. Can see it being very beautiful for people who love drier, soft smokey scents w/ sweet undertones. (There is no leather on my skin, just a softly fuzzy suede. None of the heavy/burnt/polished varities. Must be chemistry dependent.)

Sweet, boozy, and softly animalic, this composition brings together leather and incense, with tobacco and bone-dry herbs quietly lingering in the background. I suspect the straw-like, desiccated herbal quality comes from immortelle, which adds a distinctly dry, hay-toned texture. It’s a beautiful fragrance; especially in the drydown, which is truly precious but the level of sweetness pushes slightly beyond my personal comfort zone. I have a one curious note about this composition, one I also had with Iris Cendré. I know these are very different fragrances, but they share a peculiar common ground: what I can only describe as “biscuit-like leather”. It sounds amusing, but it’s exactly how it registers for me; sweet, lightly animalic leather paired with incense, while tobacco and arid herbs hum quietly beneath the surface. A strong like, and full bottle-worthy. There are some very unusual notes in here - I smell rubbing alcohol in the opening, followed by a touch of varnish, and cigarette-like ash at the end, but it remains attractive throughout, similar to Comme des Garçons’ use of avant-garde accords in pleasing ways. I tend to like leathers, though my brain is usually too literal to read the fantasy accord as an actual leather smell. Here we settle to a lovely immortelle, backed by tobacco and rum and a touch of smoke. Reminiscent of the original Zoologist Rhinoceros (another “leather” characterized by rum/tobacco/immortelle), but this has more of the sweet floral and none of the sharp oud, so more feminine or at least unisex. This is one that exudes a kind of beauty, while also intriguing the wearer throughout the day, which is a fine and rare balance in a perfume.

Leather. Booze. Cigar smoke. Cuir Velours reminds me of a man I dated a decade ago. He had impeccable taste mostly due to his deep wallet, but he was always sweet and fun and generous. I understood we came from different backgrounds, and that wealth separated us. One night after dinner, I looked up the two bottles of wine he brought over because I thought they were delicious, and was shocked too see the three figure price tag. Anyway, Cuir Velours is like that wealthy man who was not quite the right fit. He was more "Mr. Right Now" at the time. I ended up dating and marrying a musician; a creative, sweet generous man that gives me what I need, and that has nothing to do with money. Cuirs Velours is intriguing but not a good fit. I like Cuirs Velours, but I can also imagine getting tired of this scent fairly quickly.

first impression: someone set the leather store on fire! At first blast this is stroooong, smokey and unmistakably leathery. There is a "burnt" accord I can't ignore. But the burnt-leather opening settles quickly into a soft, rich velvety suede. To be honest I'm not sure I've ever understood the "suede" note so well until sampling this fragrance. It's the suede-iest suede that ever suede-d. This perfume smells "dark" to me. In a good way. I smell deep sweet vanilla too, but I wonder if that's the rum. Gets sweeter and sweeter as it lingers. At the end it's mostly sweet/faintly powdery suede with a touch of muskiness. This smells like a lady assassin who spent all day walking away from explosions in slow motion and is now meeting someone at a bar for a nighttime tryst... and of course she'll be gone before morning.

Cuir Velours is a scent I’ve heard a lot about, it seems to be one of the most popular from Naomi Goodsir. Is it nice? Yes it smells great, but I can’t say I’m wowed if I’m being honest. It’s a pleasantly smooth suede scent, so smooth it almost smells buttery and creamy - which is great. There’s a gentle note of immortelle hanging about in the background, which is what adds a significant dryness to the scent - almost dusty and papery. A smoky tobacco takes this further, whilst labdanum strengthens the leathery feel. Overall it smells great, but I feel like it’s lacking something. It’s so smooth, soft and inoffensive that I find myself getting bored. This is unlike a lot of other Naomi Goodsirs I’ve tried which seem to have a running theme of something stinky and strange. It’s pleasant, but doesn’t excite me.

Cuir Velours is beautiful! It is dominated by suede. It is a wonderfully luxurious fragrance, trailing behind you softly and envelops you in such richness. It opens with a sweet tobacco note and then very slowly gradually changes to a supple suede scent. The suede is extremely elegant with a faintly sweet apricot. It is supported by the honeyed and sensuous immortelle flower. Dark sweet rum adds a hint of sweetness to the scent. The labdanum is very delicate with an amber feel. The suede is the star in Cuir Velours. The other notes in Cuir Velours do not show their presence aggressively but instead shows itself in a delicate way to support the suede note. It is a beautiful and carefully thought-out fragrance! On my skin, the sillage is decent and longevity is good!

Cuir Velours is a bit too sweet for me to really sink my teeth into, but that aside, I can appreciate the rum accord, which is one of the better renderings I've experienced. The immortelle here does seem to "fix" it into the dry down in a pleasant manner, and I definitely pick up the delectable davana oil here. Be that as it may, it just doesn't resonate with me. Sure, its eminently wearable, and that davana is a juicy dose, but the whole thing just grows a bit too cloying and sticky for my liking, not to mentioned there is parched, scorched woodiness in the dry down that gnaws at me. I'd probably be more pleased if there was a shift into something a bit warmer, damper and savory in its dry down. I completely get its appeal, though.

Opens with a floral leather and dries down into a very pleasant, sweet rum. I don't buy that it's "sickeningly sweet" or anything like that. To me, the sweetness is relaxed and balanced with the booziness and the leather. It's very nice - perfect if you want a leather fragrance where the leathery notes aren't overly domineering. Probably more of an evening scent on balance but I think it's pretty versatile. However, I'd have to agree with the other commenter that said it's not quite original or unique enough to be considered a "signature scent" but then not everything has to be. This is still a very nice, well-put-together fragrance with good longevity and projection.

As if the offspring of Daim Blond SL and 1740 Histoires de Parfums , it combines the density and depth and some immortelle outdoorsy of Marquis with the softness and tenderness of Daim Blond. And there is something vaguely reminiscent of an apricot pit. But at the same time it is in itself, it is not a clone of any of them, and in general has a rather rare sound. Daim Blond is much more weightless, airy and less sweet. Cuir Velours is denser, thicker. Slightly badass. And it is clearly younger, not youthful, but it is definitely a different generation of fragrances. If you into realistic natural leather-suede scents, you need them all in your collection.

This is all about a boozy & smoky leather with a tone of immortelle.. omg so much immortelle especially at the opening, heavy and a little nauseating for me. As time passes I get some gourmandish qualities but this scent is not a gourmand. When it calms I get the nice and mild tobacco note. The incense is a nice smoke which blends perfectly with the suede from the beginning and there's a woody vibe at the background. It seems it's a strong scent but I can't comment on performance without a sample. Anyway I'll try it again. Besides the boozy/smoky leather you must really love immortelle. Edit! Well, I Looove it! So good so thick and rich blend!

Sweet, resinous, soft leather, not too much immortelle to my nose not really herbal at all, slightly smoky. i'm getting Lubin Korrigan vibes, which is similar in int's boozy leathery nature but also a touch herbal (which immortelle here comes out on the drydown.) Making me want to smell Korrigan again I absolutely love it, not sure I need a full bottle as it's quite masc but there is a nostalgic association I have with this and Korrigan. I think I nabbed a sample of this based on my deep crush on Bois d'Ascese. It's a scent I absolutely adore. Cuir Velours is definitely an interesting scent, much like B d'A. It's very sweet and leans a bit more gourmand than I prefer, but it's not a deal breaker. At first spray, I was smelling a sort of figgy note that reminds me of 19-69's Invisible post, but this scent's profile is much kinder on me. I'm getting rum, incense, and labdanum, but not a ton of smoke. The suede note is more of an evocation than actually smelling like leather to me. It would be nice to have a decant of this, but it's not an everyday thing for me.

A masterpiece. A soft, velvety leather that will fall in love with your skin, and its love will be returned. It's one of those scents that doesn't really add anything dramatically new to your skin, just makes it smell more personal and a whole lot better. This perfume has lots of personality, in the sense that it's really brilliant and unconventional, but it won't impose his presence on you, will just make your personality shine. Without even apparently trying.

More straightforward than other NG frags. Leather, amber, sweet. A hint of ambroxan. Does not have the dimensionality of Nuit de Bakelite or Bois. Not getting the tobacco or smoke. I wonder if this has been reformulated since it's introduction in 2012 since I detect zero smokiness or ash. Drydown is lightly powdery, vanilla (maybe that's the sandalwood/rum notes) More of a gourmand. All in all it's completely likeable, but nothing groundbreaking.

Mmm. This one is eminently pleasant. Though, to be honest, as I get more acquainted with Naomi Goodsir, I had imagined something a bit more forceful. More pungent. But this is simply a sweet, soft suede that coats the air with lightly smoky, almost gourmand tones. I used my entire sample, happily, but I couldn't imagine wearing this very often. I'd need it to say a little bit more. Come with a bit more murk. But a delight to try, nonetheless!

Smooth suede that almost comes off a bit lipsticky on my skin. There’s a subtle hint of sweetness , a subtle smokiness from the incense . I don’t get the rum and I’m not sure what immortele smells like but I’m guess it’s what gives this a sweetness , almost a bit honey like. It’s more of a skin scent, I can’t speak on longevity yet. Huge like for me Edit: lasts all day on clothes and maybe 12 hrs on skin. Simply amazing

Soft in texture, balmy and luxurious scent... Has a similar feel to Iris Cendre on my skin. In the lines of "This is your skin scent, but better". Unisex. Long lasting & with nice projection. P.s. If you like this & are looking for something cheaper, but with a similar vibe, try also Kalotinis "Tobacco Maniac". I own & love both. Value for money!

I enjoy this scent. Wearable, doesn't pull too gourmand on me. It is first leather, then dries to a softer leather with vanilla, sandalwood, Lasts but isn't annoyingly persistent. Projects but doesn't overwhelm. A soft comfortable suedy leather with some sweet amber (but not too sweet).

It's a nice perfume, semi-sweet suede immortelle with alcohol undertones. It's quite silent and close to skin, sophisticated and I would call it neutral - it does not have big character and is not groundbreaking for sure. I prefer Daim blond or 1740 HdP over it.

A pleasant surprise when I suddenly smelled this nectar of suede. Usually I do not appreciate suede notes but this is an exception: remarkable, particularly intense, very masculine, sweaty, with a highly charged sexual (labdanum). Very good Mrs. Goodsir!!

I like the direction this was going for, but the sweetness is dialed up to 11. if it was like a 5 or 6 it would have been great for me. still, for those seeking extremely sweet stuff, this would work well - if you like pronounced leathery texture
