Wulóng Chá

Look, all I've ever aspired to is to carry myself like an extremely rich Shanghainese woman and this helps me smell like her. My hair is in a chignon, I might have an ascot around my neck, and I kinda look like a flight attendant even though I bought my entire wardrobe from Louis Vuitton and all of my jewelry from Tiffany because I don't actually have individualistic taste. I'm just loaded, the money gives me peace and confidence, and I'll therefore never have any desire to make a real statement. Plus making a statement would be very inconvenient for my family business; I don't need to be drawing the PRC's attention to how we got rich. Filthy rich, but understated. So tasteful in my lifestyle choices that there's almost no distinguishable taste at all. I definitely wear silk to bed. Stereotype-laden fantasies aside, I spent all of my childhood summers in China pounding lychee and never would have told you it had a distinct fragrance, beyond maybe its greeny, earthy rinds. Now that this fragrance reminds me to search for the scent of the lychee fruit, I think I get some of that green, but it's also in what I would have told you (sin notes) was pear. Wait, oops, Fragrantica is wrong actually; the bottle says "litsea" which is definitely not lychee. Well then, I was right about lychee not being there, but WuLong Cha is gently fruity enough that if you make an effort you can easily convince yourself that it's in there somewhere. The citrus isn't sharp but it's big and present and round; the tea fully smooths out its edges. The sillage has a bit of a squeaky playful traction that I wish I had better words to describe; the fragrance doesn't hesitate to take over your vibe and you can tangibly feel it transforming you into someone chiller than you as it envelops and moves through you. There's a very gentle but determined grippiness to it, kind of like how your fingers have a bit of sticky chalky traction when you rub them together after peeling yourself some lychee. I do kind of get what one poster meant when they said it smells like the cheap tea you can get in bubble tea shops but as long as I don't think about that too hard, my rich lady fantasy might remain intact. It's kinda like how if you go too far left or right on the political spectrum you basically wind up in the same spot. The bubble tea shop simply got too good at mimicking expensive tea with artificial ingredients, OK? Anyway, every time I spray this on I experience a renewed fleeting worry that it's too sweet and that it's going to knock me out if it carries on the way it began. But it always reliably smooths out into a soothing, sophisticated, confidence and inner peace (all based in reality avoidance) that only unspeakably rich Shanghainese ladies should be able to buy.

The opening is all about citrus, a very good and fresh one, leaning to the green side but with some hint of sweetness. I like it very much, is one of my favourite "happy, fresh, invogorating" openings, just perfect for sunny days. When the citrus slowly tones down the tea accord starts to pop out, but what this accord smells of exactly? I'm a big tea drinker, tryed hundreds of different teas and blends, all levels of oxidation, from super fresh white tea to the fermented puer chinese black tea, and low oolong is my favourite level of oxidation (15-25%), I import my daily tea from China ecc... yes I'm that kind of guy, so it's quite natural for me having a "tea fragrance". When I smell the tea accord in this I perceive the smell of oolong tea leaves (when they are handfolded to get the oxidation), very green, herbacious, it does not smell as the infused juice of tea, so if you are looking for the smell of the infused, prepared tea, you won't find it here. Forget also the western tea blends, if you think this would smell as a cup of earl grey or something among those lines you will be disappointed. The accord is very fresh, with an hint of sweetness (maybe the remains of citrus or the nutmeg note listed that I cannot pinpoint individually at all) and I must say that is very, very similiar to the tea leaves that i use everyday (I have taiwanese Longfenxia and Dayuling tea leaves and confronted their smell live while writing this), just a little sweeter, but without going in the flavour of the infused oolong (that have floreal and sweet fruits notes). So, to come back to the initial question, does this smell like tea? Yes! But tea leaves (with low oxidation), not tea juice. If this is what you are looking for, you will be as happy as me to try this fragrance. The tea accord remains (subtle) for the long drydown (this is increadibly long lasting for a freshy, like 10-12 hours on my skin) that is all about a clean lactonic musk, very fresh, polished. I cannot get any "fig" specifically, but I suspect that the fig accord is the responsable of the lactonic feeling of the musk. About the use: it is totally unisex at my nose, night and day from spring to autumn, and even in winter if you are tired of woods and resins and you want a "fresh break" for a day or two. Longevity is very good and projection is ok, it is suitable for overspray if you like that way. Price is not low for a freshy, but if you can get a good deal (it is a 2014 fragrance so available at discounters and on gray market) it is absolutely worth.

Bottle just came in (blind buy). Here’s my initial impression on tester strip: soooo very green. Photorealistic grass with dew in the summer, insanely realistic tea note, a tart and very lightly sweet mandarin to balance out the bitterness from the greens. This reminds me of the last days of school when I was in elementary... those “field days” where you were given hours to run around in the damp field as the summer was finally rolling in. It’s nostalgic. So very nostalgic. But at the same time, it smells like a luxurious vacation. Like a 5 star hotel in Miami. This is a lot better than I expected, especially because I am not the biggest fan of green frags (I can’t stand philosykos and stuff like that). I need to try this on skin, but initial impression is an 8.9/10. Edit: I wore this once since the previous initial reaction, and wulong cha opened my eyes to green fragrances. I have always picked heavy fragrances with vanilla and spices and leather, oud and animalics, smoke and earthiness. I have smelled thousands of fragrances. So many are good, so many are well done, but 10 times out of 10, your favorite ones will be the ones that speak to you–whether that’s through an old memory or something that just fits your style in every way shape and form. Wulong cha is so nostalgic to me that I can’t stop wearing it. It’s winter where I live, and it gets pretty cold here, and even still, I just want to reach for wulong cha. It reminds me of my childhood. The sun warming up the grass during summer camp, the sounds of kids running around and screaming with joy. Wulong also reminds me of every time that school ended for the year and those initial summer days brought nothing but joy and a sense of freedom. I won’t lie, wulong cha isn’t even in my top 25 in terms of the actual smell, but the nostalgia factor is already making this perfume fly up on my list of favorites. Scents really do hold memories, and when you finally find a scent that brings you back to the simpler times in your lives, you won’t be able to put it down either. Smell-9.0 Longevity-8 hours (5 hours working, 3 hours skin scent) Sillage/projection- not strong, but not weak either. About 3 feet projection for the first hour, then tapers off to about a foot of radiating. Nostalgia factor (for me)-10 Overall-9.8/10.

If you are new to the fragrance world, it's incredibly important that you try Wulong Cha. It has become a staple in the fragrance community. I believe it was released in 2015, and since then, it has become a prerequisite in understanding citrus tea perfumery. Is it a masterpiece? Perhaps. A lot of you would say no, but that is what it takes to be considered a masterpiece. There has to be controversy and there has to be a dispute. Otherwise, the lack of dialogue simply creates another mass appealing fragrance that all in all is very boring. A masterpiece is anything but boring. I'm not going to go over any fragrance notes etc. Because that has been beaten into the ground. This is a citrus fragrance. You can dissect this any way you want, but at the end of the day, it is a citrus! Natural or synthetic is up to you. The biggest debate comes from whether or not this is a tea fragrance. My position on this is that I don't care! It's not supposed to be strong in composition, so therefore I don't care if I can't smell it. I love citrus fragrances. They might be my favorite overall, if I had to choose. Don't hold me to that though! So I might be bias when it comes to whether or not this is a great fragrance. I think it is for multiple reasons. It's incredibly balanced and has been constructed in a way where it can hold itself four hours. I don't get sick of it like I do with many others. So that's a plus. Lasting impression on me. It's been many years since I smelled it the first time, and I still remember it to this day. That's extremely rare for how many fragrances I have smelled throughout the years. Aside from PROFU ROMA, my favorite brand of all time, NISHANE has one of the best citrus fragrances out there. And I will end my review with that.

Wulong Cha is a joyful, clean and uplifting summer citrus fragrance in the "fresh out of the shower" genre. Another one of Jorge Lee's skillful creations for Nishane - Zenne, Ambra Calabria, Fan Your Flames, Hacivat, Sultan Vetiver. Wulong Cha opens with a blast of sweet lemon and bergamot, listed as mandarin but is sweet lemon notes that dominate (litsea cubeba) my nose. It is linear, softening into a musky drydown with citrus notes lingering. Long-lasting for a citrus fragrance, six hours plus in heat. I think I get a little nose blind to it after a couple of hours but it was still there on my wrist the next morning after one spray. Big projection at first, then softening to become fairly subtle. Five sprays never feel too much. Not much sillage. Perfect for sporty daytime summery events, summer lunch dates. Think more riviera than beach. The clean, shower-fresh profile, longevity, and low projection/sillage also make it an interesting office choice. Wulong Cha is unisex but I think men and women of different ages will interpret it differently and have different uses for it. As a 50 year old man, I am a bit old fashioned and I could be wrong, but my take is that on men, it leans clean and uplifting, not seductive (skip for evening dates). I wear it to evening dance classes but not to dance clubs, if that makes sense. However, I think it would be alluring on a women for an evening date. I wouldn't wear it to the office but I would have in my 20s or 30s. It's not very professional, more fun. Men might think at first spray, “a touch feminine for me,” (I did at first). Women might think, “a touch masculine”. It's different, hard to put your finger on it. Just wear it. it's magic!

A few months ago, during a trip to the South of Spain, I had the chance to try most of Nishane’s fragrances while shopping at El Corte Ingles. The stand outs from their collection for me were Tuberoza, Wulong Cha, Wulong Cha X, Ani and Nefs. Some fragrances were nice, but were too masculine for my liking! During last month’s Black Friday sales I’ve found an amazing deal for Wulong Cha and I have snatched a 100 ml bottle with no regrets! If you’re into citrusy, fresh, tea dominant fragrances, Wulong Cha is phenomenal! Not just that it’s smelling very photorealistic and natural fruity/citrusy, but lasts for the entire day without re spraying, which for this scent profile is not commonly found. There’s a sweet, fruity, light floral aspect to it, but Wulong Cha is mainly bergamot, orange, mandarin with green tea. It’s super fresh and bright, very enjoyable and easy to use daily for warmer seasons. I would say it’s bang on unisex, and for the price I have bought it, good value for money! The bottle, the sprayer, the packaging and the presentation overall is luxe which is to be expected for high end brands like Nishane. I own for about 1 year now Ambra Calabria, so I kinda knew what to expect from them. In my experience, Nishane and Unique’e Luxury are two amazing Turkish niche brands that are really worth the hype. Besides releasing thoughtful, fewer, but great quality perfumes, their fragrances performance is top notch. Granted, I haven’t tried the entire collections from these two brands, but everything I have tried so far was amazing and I want more from them for my collection...

Nose Note #852 I haven't read any reviews, but I'm sure many people have already said this - it's Arden Green Tea on steroids. Exactly what I wish Green Tea could be. Just imagine Green Tea, or for that matter DG Light Blue or Moschino I Love Love, but with great performance. It still has this effervescent feeling of citruses with green tea, but something just makes it thicker and adds a punch, and maybe some slight spiciness. There isn't much to it. It's not exactly tea, it's more citruses - in case you are expecting a straight tea scent. And it's not wulong or chinese green tea, it's more like a Lipton reimagination of chinese green tea, or a green tea ice drink. Here's some opinion from people that are not fragheads at all. Both my wife and my friends (a family, husband and wife) said that this just smells like lemon toilet air-freshener... How do you like an air-freshener for $160?... You have to agree it obviously smells like a lemon air-freshener, just like many other bergamot/lemon-forward fragrances smell. Just bear this in mind if you expect people around you to get the game, you are probably the only one behind the ball. The rest may think you smell like an air-freshener. Ain't that a kick in the head... 8.8/10, say whatever, I love to smell like this air-freshener

You gotta be patient with this one, folks. Here was my journey: Immediately after spraying, this was a nose needling, bug repelling CITRUS FRAGRANCE. Almost like if you rubbed lemongrass essential oil inside of your nostrils. Or if you mopped every surface of your home with Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh. I almost scrubbed this off but decided I was being a baby and soldiered on. 5 minutes later, this became a Bitter Citrus Fragrance. Still a bit screechy, but no longer scaring bugs away. After 20 minutes, this smells like drinking a smooth and refreshing tall glass of iced green tea with lemon after washing your hands in a fancy bathroom decorated with, like, smooth stacked rocks. I don't know if this smells like oolong because I've never had oolong tea, but there is definitely some tea in here. Not black tea, more green tea. However, as others have mentioned, it will be best to think of this as a citrus fragrance rather than a tea fragrance. There is absolutely no sweetness in this, just cool and mellow refreshment. Lesson: If you hate, try to wait.

Stop Calling It a Lemon Air Freshener or Citrus Bomb! Wulóng Chá is a tea lover's dream! I keep reading reviews saying this is super citrusy, or even "a lemon air freshener on me." Honestly? That's not true at all. Yes, the opening has a bright burst of citrus... bergamot, orange. But it's never overpowering or synthetic. It's fresh, uplifting, and lasts maybe 10–15 minutes. Then??? The dry down is pure tea. Not a weak, watery tea, but rich, aromatic, slightly bitter oolong tea that sits on your skin like a warm cup on a cool morning. The citrus fades into the background, and the tea note becomes dominant and stays with you for hours. You just feel the TEA! Nothing else! This is sophisticated, calming, and surprisingly deep for a fresh fragrance. But not a "lemon cleaner" scent. If you tried it and only got citrus, I think you didn't wait long enough. Give it time. The tea is the real star here. Performance: 6–8 hours on skin. Moderate projection, not a beast, but leaves a beautiful scent trail. 9/10

Smells like a beautiful 5-star hotel lobby in East Asia. I've been to some great hotels in S Korea and Japan, and have smelt something similar to wu long cha permeating in the air as i check in. It's really, really great. I'm very much so partial to tea fragrances, so wu long cha is right up my alley. For the life of me, I CANNOT understand how people are getting a "lemon cleaner" smell from this. I really don't. You want nasty lemon cleaner? Go smell the opening of club de nuit intense man edt. THAT is lemon cleaner. Not this. Wu long cha is a beautiful, citrusy and tea fragrance. Performance is really impressive for what is supposed to be a freshie. It radiates off of my skin for 3hrs or so, and then calms down into a calming skin scent for another 8hrs or so. I can still smell it even after a shower. This is a must have in your collection-- tea fan or not. If not, I'd at least give it a try.

THE Tea Fragrance. Wulóng Chá is a calming citrus with a really prominent Oolong tea. I could see someone describing this as a green tea (actual green tea, not matcha) scent. Warm green tea with lemon is the best way I could describe this scent. This scent has became my daily scent instantly. This works SUPER WELL in Thailand's high heat, which I'm super impressed of. This fragrance could easily last 10 hours on my skin. It doesn't project that well on my skin, but I think that's the beauty of tea fragrances. Subtle, calming, quiet. I have also tried Wulóng Chá X before smelling the OG, and I have to say that the OG is way better. Wulóng Chá X is very heavy on the citrus and the tea isn't as prominent as the OG, which is a really big part of this scent to begin with. I'd definitely re-buy if I ever run out of a bottle. Such a perfect scent to use in Thailand's heat.

Envelops you in an arm's-length aura of "slightly sexy spa day". Opens with bright green herbaceous notes mingled with crisp lemon and bergamot. The bergamot is quite forward and lingers for a long time as the tea scent emerges. Evokes the feeling of drinking cold lemonade and high-end oolong tea while you lounge in a spa garden redolent with greenery and a waft of essential oils. The fig and musk provide an alluring warmth and complexity on the dry-down, which balance out the sparkling citrus and slightly bitter tea and elevate the scent above its "high-end-spa-product" opening DNA. The scent grows addictive as it develops; I cannot stop smelling myself when I wear it. Incredible performance for a fresh scent; the citrus lingers for hours even on bare skin, and my hair and clothes will hold onto the tea and musk notes for well over a day.

One of the most refreshing and uplifting scents I've come across. Very citrus-heavy, but specifically the pith of the citrus—not sweet juice or pulp like Afternoon Swim or Tygar, and not overly-bitter and oily zest of something like Terre d'Hermes. The oolong gives it this earthy greenness that adds that intrigue factor, setting it apart from the thousands of other citrus scents out there. The musks are clean and add power and radiation, but blend well so they don't stick out as their own distinct accord. Everyone seems to agree that the longevity is good, but I'm surprised at the people claiming it has moderate or intimate projection, because this stuff is LOUD on me. And I'm someone who rarely gets good performance from even many of the popular "beast mode" fragrances out there. This is a true gem.

Try layering this with MAB Ganymede, i think it works wonderfully! It starts off as Wulong cha, but as the dry down starts you get more and more of those salty metallic saffron notes from Ganymede. Right now im a couple of hours in and i still get both the sort of green tea notes from Wulong cha, and i get the metallic notes from Ganymede. what i suspect will happen is that wulong cha will get weaker and weaker, while ganymede stays strong as it usually does. Whick would mean you get this sort of beautiful transition from Wulong cha down to Ganymede, and i think this makes for a very fun wearing experience. I will wear and test the combination more, but so far i do really enjoy it, and i cant wait for warmer weather to wear it more. Let me know if you tried it and how it works for you :)

a perfume so good it's almost boring. i save this for special occasions - presentations, graduation, formal events. highly inoffensive, very business formal. the "tea" they harp on in their description is nothing like tosummer void and everything like a more extravagant and citrus-forward version of those linlee lemon teas you can get on the streets of tsimshatsui while summering in hongkong, with the drydown of a trust fund and too much free time and free money. it's the shit of housewives and investment banking, of stuff that gets done but doesnt really contribute anything to the world and whatever. i can't even say its like a cool zen clean girl perfume because it's just a strong scent that reeks of wealth. very good longevity and sillage. will probably repurchase if i run out tho lol

This fragrance is simply a masterpiece. Out of my entire collection, it is the most refined and sophisticated scent I own: everything feels perfectly in place. The opening is a beautiful combination of bergamot and mandarin, almost as if you have just peeled a fresh mandarin. Very quickly, the scent shifts into tea, that introduces a clean feeling. As it develops further, the dry down becomes a smooth, comforting musk. I believe the warmth and creaminess come mainly from the fig note. I do not smell fig in an obvious way, but there is a subtle touch that softens and enriches the composition. This fragrance manages to be warm and cool at the same time, fresh but not sour, clean yet embracing. It is relaxing, uplifting, and it makes me genuinely happy every time I spray it.

Smells like sweet iced tea with lemon and honey . The quality , longevity, and silage are excellent and Im shocked a freshie like this has the longevity it does! I’m actually curious to see what Wulong Cha X has to offer. I personally love tea scents and this is really good alone or layered with other fresh tea scents like EA Green Tea or Thé Matcha 26. After my evening shower I layered this with VS Pear Glacé body cream and a Thé Matcha 26 inspired body oil and it smells incredible. I had purchased a 10ml decant when the weather was still chilly a few months back so I hadn’t really been wearing it until that big heatwave first hit and it was then that I purchased a full bottle because I know this decant won’t last too long since I’m utterly enamored with this fragrance.

This is an instant top 10 fragrance for me. I bought a bottle and few days back and my god is it good. I mainly get a heavy bergamot/orange combo with tea and a light fig in the dry down, the citrus never fully fades for me though. I get very good performance for a fresh fragrance. I get about 9 hours on skin and all day on clothes with a good bubble of projection for 3-4 hours. This reminds me of a very well kept, relaxing home. I think that resemblance has to do with a diffuser my mom had that was lime and tea scented, which wasn't super close to this but had the same zen vibe this gives me. It makes me feel very fresh and uplifted. Masterclass perfumery and a good intro to niche fragrances! 9/10

Got this delivered today. It is my most expensive blind buy yet - and it's a jackpot. This is the definition of "perfectly unisex". A very soft and uplifting scent of citruses submerged in high-quality oolong tea, with a fig at the other end of the table. It's light, perfectly blended, complex and suitable for warm weather. You can lightly spray it to freshen up, or spray more for increased projection - it forgives and does not annoy. This scent has an exceptional longevity for its profile - projects to arm length even after 8 hours. If you love tea - you will love this scent. But test it first, i've heard that some people get headaches after smelling tea leaves. 9/10, excellent

I first tried this through a 2.5 ml split and thought it was very pleasant, but not particularly impressive for the price point. A couple of months later, a friend bought a full bottle and let me wear it for about a week. By the third day, I was completely hooked, and it immediately earned a spot on my wishlist. The quality of the ingredients is excellent. The tea and citrus notes feel very natural and realistic, forming the backbone of the composition. There’s a subtle fig nuance, but nothing sweet or fruity. Longevity and sillage are outstanding for this scent profile. The only downside is that I’m about to make an irresponsible financial decision.
