07 Tanoke

Got this via Maxaroma on a complete stroke of fortune. For the 2nd time in less than 60 days my email notification did the job I've waited over 2 years for it to do! First, I scored Dior Homme Parfum and then 3 days ago, I scored this marvel of a fragrance: Tanoke 7! This scent is MHARVALOSSA!!! I'm lucky enough to own a vintage bottle of Bottega Veneta Pour Homme Parfum. I would venture that Tanoke 7 is the taller, darker, brooding younger brother to BVPHP. The BIG difference is Tanoke 7 has much better performance. This scent last well over 8 hours and gives strong yet measured performance in the first 2-3 hours. It's more piney and smokey incense infused than BVPHP. The overall formulation is darker and a bit more spicy. What is fantastic though is the patchouli and black musk combo in the late dry down: WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This thing smells like James Bond running at top speed in his Brioni tuxedo with his Walther PPK in hand ready to deal out some serious justice in the Black Forest of Baden-Württemberg, where the latest spawn of SPECTRE has decided to set up shop. Just picture that. If you can, you've nailed this scent... It's unlike nearly ANYTHING currently on the market. I have Dunhill Black, and as great a value for money proposition that fragrance is, Tanoke 7 is that and a wagon full of gold! If you are familiar with PdM Nisean... which is highly lauded by multiple influencers on YouTube, you will understand when I say, Tanoke 7 is what Nisean aspired to be. It's an absolute class scent. Woody, spicy, subtle piney note in the mid, then a full cashmere blanket of black musk and a clean chocolate patchouli in the late drydown. If you like unconventional woody fragrances that are not the recent typical oud hodgepodges... then get this, then get a custom made tuxedo and book a trip to Baden-Württemberg, Germany! bon.chance

A fantastic incense fragrance! Odin line did not convince me, aside of this one. This is a pine-y frankincense, with a spicy/burnt wood backbone and an masterful hint of orange as a supporting note. It sometimes leans toward the ashtray (in a good way). Performance is average, a positive point here, since it's probably the best performing fragrance of the whole Odin line. This one shares strong similarities with CdG Zagorsk (like others have said before me), but does it better imo. Like for many incense fragrances, it could have also been marketed as a pepper frag (like others underlined): the orange with frankincense in the blend gives nearly an impression of sichuan pepper. Original retail price is simply funny, but given that a 100ml bottle of Tanoke can now be found for half the price of a 50ml bottle of Zagorsk, it's a no-brainer for me! I did not think I could still be impressed by an incense fragrance after the many I have smelt, but it happened here with Tanoke, and given its price now, it is a dangerous competitor for Unum Lavs, CdG Zagorsk, Armani Bois d'Encens and TF Noir Anthracite. Now my n.2 incense frag, just behind N.Goodsir Bois d'Ascese. Highly recommended, if you can find it for less than $80/100. Fall evenings and Winter days, 25+ PS: Tanoke has NOTHING in common with Guerlain Bois Mysterieux.

Stunningly sensuous, smoky-seeming, aromatic trail through mysterious woods. After a string of disappointments with Odin (Seylon and Roam, neither of which gave up the goods in terms of detectable tea or wood notes I was hoping for) this one changed my mind about the house, as it's not just beautiful but also lasts for an acceptable (if not amazing) amount of time. This one clings to fabric for up to 24h and stays detectable on skin up to 8h, even on me. And boy did I WANT it to stick around, because Tanoke is a dry forest I'd love to live in. Gaiac & orange is a no-lose combo for me, but oddly I didn't sense either note in isolation - instead I was so lost in its glorious fug of spicy wafts that I almost thought "myrrh maybe?". This is distinctive and makes its presence felt; definitely not a blind buy as it's a quirky, individual thing which certainly won't please everyone. But I think if you like it, you'll *really* like it. All the comparisons below about its near relatives are dead right but this is distinctive enough to be worth adding to your collection even if you have a few of the scents mentioned. Approaching a reasonable price, too. So if this sounds like your wheelhouse, even if you've been burnt before by Odin, give this a try, because Tanoke is ... terrific. W-A-N-T.

We’ve just returned from a camping holiday in the woods (with the family, so nothing extremely rough) and it’s the perfect time to finally enter my review for Tanoke. I got my bottle through a blind swap; I’m on a black pepper kick currently, so the descriptions and reviews for this appealed to me. The beauty of Tanoke caught me off guard though. Not ‘pretty’ sort of beauty, but pure and raw and essential. I took a decant with me for our camping trip, because I had already figured it would fit the forest setting very well. On most days the lovely sweet fresh piney scent of the actual forest would be enough for me, but on some days I wanted to amplify the magical forestry feel and a little spritz of Tanoke would do the trick. As for comparisons: Hinoki is way more artficial smelling imo, as I find with a lot of the cdg (although not always unpleasant). This might be considered blasphemy to some, but also Norne pales in comparison, lacking the depth and richness that makes Tanoke a pleasure to wear for hours, days in a row. For me, only Bois d’Encens, with a similar black pepper and incens combo, is comparable. Tanoke has a slight fresher feel to it from the ginger and citrus, which give it a zesty edge, a bit more sweet and friendly.

Magnificent! Tanoke opens with a blast of very churchy incense -- very much resembling the frankincense heavy Full Incense. Then, after just a few minutes, the incense levels off and shares space with a bright and bitter orange peel for a most unexpected freshness that mingles with some spice in the background. Over time, the citrus gives way to a fantastic blend of incense, spice and deep coniferous forest in all its splendor, the deep green pressing forward with every hour until it fades away, some 6-8 hours later. The uniqueness of Tanoke makes it really hard to come up with a true comparable. But I will say that depending on the moment, I get whiffs of Full Incense, also a darker, broodier version of TdH; and surprisingly, something else that at times reminds me just a bit of Aramis, strange as that may sound. I think the note votes have it pretty much spot on, so you really have to like those more dominant notes to have any chance of loving this stuff. But if you get it, you really get it. In every phase, Tanoke strikes me as a hidden gem among hidden gems. If you can find it, just BUY IT. Kind of bummed I slept on the opportunity to get a backup bottle of Tanoke, now that it seems all but impossible to find...

Any incense based scent that can come close to replicating the gold standard of Church Incense, LAVS, at a fraction of the price deserves heaps of praise. Tanoke is almost a dead ringer for LAVS, with just a lesser refined embodiment of the other worldly aura of the latter. Both share the same unique trait of be being both calming and meditative without ever feeling self conscious in what sometimes can be felt as a pretentious exercise for some individuals. Tanoke and of course LAVS takes one away in such a natural sublime way. Suffice to say an almost religious experience in the best possible way on a most appropriate personal level. Maybe Tanoke and LAVS were indeed Heaven sent. Tanoke in particualar is at a pricepoint that is unquestionably divine. As a reference point , I live in Nor Cal and visit Big Sur quite regularly. Tonight in a warm relatively humid night in San Fran, sprayed Tanoke earlier and can surely attest the impression of Big Sur is wafting ever so gently from my wrists. The perfume designer did her research on this one and as would be expected from the noble House of Lalique. 8.75/10

Of course we all change our favorites from time to time but right now this is my favorite fragrance in my collection. It has a smoky, bitter orange and woody opening along with a strong incense vibe to it (particularly on the dry down). It's masculine and mysterious smelling. I've put my nose on a few Odin fragrances and I can honestly tell you, this is a niche house that is well worth the money. Note: I wanted to make sure that I was pronouncing this fragrance properly so I contacted Odin. They told me that it is pronounced "tan oak."

It’s sad this isn’t around anymore. Glimmer-in-the-dark orange and unusually lively incense, sitting in an old mahogany cupboard. Not especially clever but superbly built and highly enjoyable; it was my misfortune to encounter it in what I now realise was a clearance sale. Other equally good perfumes have followed in its orangey footsteps, notably Kerosene’s Broken Theories and R’Oud Elements, but this is still a loss to the world and I mourn my ever-decreasing reserves with each passing spray.

raw red wood...or is it redwood. Northern California Redwood Forest. It's incense, probably Frankincense rather than Myrhh. Thankfully, lacking that medicinal myrhh effect. Love the wood and incense mix--it creates a smoky scent but the wood still smells fresh, not burnt. All other elements are blended nicely to create one unified scent. It evolves a little from opening to dry down but you don't really want the scent to change because it's really nice, interesting and well done.

Tanoke reminds me of a pine-scented Yankee Candle, but it's more realistic. While I'm tempted to say that it smells just like a redwood tree, I have to admit that it becomes smokier and spicier as it dries down. The perfume develops very slowly on the skin, so give it a good 6 hours to allow it to deepen. Nice, natural, realistic. Highly recommended for people who are looking for a true evergreen forest without bells, whistles, or complications.

Smells just like how high quality peaty Scotch whisky tastes. Smokey, earthy, spicy, woody, and malty sweetnes. Really nice wearable incense fragrance, dry and complicated. Performance is decent, not too strong nor weak. This is great for evenings and special classy events. Masculine leaning, but would be sexy on the right lady.

I love this frag - when I first smelled it, I knew I had to have it. It's delicious wood, incense, and spice and it layers really well with CdG Black. Longevity is commensurate with its price so you're not going to get the Amouage or Tom Ford staying power. Nevertheless, a great scent and I'm psyched to have it in my collection.

Can anyone tell me what's going on with this fragrance and this house? I've been trying to purchase this for over a year now and it's not available and if you look up Odin online this is never available and they seem to be selling clothes...

It starts out as a mix of incense and redwood and then dies down to an almost smoky redwood. It reminds me of laying down fresh cedar mulch, which I find fantastic. Longevity is excellent, and it easily makes it through a 10 hour workday.

This is a really nice woody scent with a citrus opening. There is some incense and spice in there, as other reviewers have noted. There is something going on that really smooths it all out so none of the notes are too strong/sharp. Almost a creaminess to it, but not in a sweet way. This is where it really remind of Strangers-Lumberjack, although there are some noted divergent notes in both. Both have a woody citrus blend, with a certain smooth quality that just ties everything together. I ended buying Lumberjack before I came across this, but I would consider buying this had I not. It does not project strongly from my skin/to my nose but it does seem to last as a low projector for quite some time. I'd recommend this if you like wood/citrus/spice/incense in a pretty crowd pleasing package. Nothing really stands out as offensive to me, and you aren't going to choke out a room with this. I could actually see this working year round due to the citrus and ginger, but I think it would be best suited to spring/fall/winter most likely. Overall really well-blended and worth a sample.

Top notes very refreshing and spicy predominance of ginger, orange and pepper. Nice and promising start then the middle notes where the woods are to be seen in a brilliant way and with a sweet spot for the contribution of patchouli smoked a chord is also detected by the contribution of incense is the star that guides Tanoke. This smoky incense instead of highlighting wood burning conveys peace and zen atmosphere to the fragrance, also away from the ecclesiastical field and typical Cathedral, which makes it more interesting smell. So far so very creative and beautiful, drying becomes somewhat monotonous and boring as the aroma of the wood floor, no loss of nuances, only incense and openness is perceived to surround musk and somewhat conventional that you can smell in countless other fragrances. The qualities are good, too the duration and a decent projection, one of the best fragrances for my taste among all the American firm niche Odin. Rating: 7.5

I am a younger (29) woman, pretty fashion forward and cool, and I discovered this at my favorite boutique in NYC. The guy that suggested it really understood that I wanted something deep, mysterious and would rather err on the side of masculine than come up short on wow-factor. I ended up buying this and Lux Patchouli, with the intention of giving one as a gift to a guy. Initially, I thought I would keep the Lux but after trying this one on for a day, I had to change my mind. This is an incredible smell on me, warm and spicy with a little tangy zap. I started putting Imaginary Authors "Bulls Blood" on my chest and this on my arms and neck to create a fall-in experience. The patchouli is awesome, the black pepper is always exciting for me.

This is what I imagine a church pew smells like in St Albans Cathedral. It's a dark red wood with a smokey richness that states refinement and not necessarily age. Wouldn't recommend to younger people but I still enjoy it. Will finish my sample but won't be buying a FB.

Not being a huge fan of incense, I was not immediately wowed by this fragrance. After several trials, I have developed an appreciation for the smoky incense accord as it is well balanced by several included spices (ginger, black pepper, and nutmeg). A warmth erupts in the dry down thanks to the redwood note. Would not personally wear this, but respect the olfactory inspiration behind the scent. Longevity and projection are great. (32)
