Selfie

This niche perfume brand was completely inspired by the art of photography. This time, the company decided not to put a photographer in the creative process. Selfie's inspiration is the user him/herself. The box brings a mirror to reflect your image as if the fragrance had been created especially for you. The perfumer was Thomas Fontaine, who has worked for manufacturers in the industry, such as Mane, and has already created for Jean Patou, Lubin, Eutopie, etc. This fragrance was launched in 2015 and consists of notes of star anise (badiana), elemi, ginger, incense and angelica, on top; maple syrup accord, cinnamon, lily and Cabreuva wood, in the body; suede accord, styrax, labdanum, oakmoss, patchouli, tonka beans and sandalwood, in the bottom. In my interpretation, Selfie was created to take advantage of a time when so much was said about the Millennials and, at the same time, celebrities and wannabes dominated social networks with more personal photos, opening a new pattern for the consumer market and creating new directions for mobile technology. However, the blue-colored fragrance deceives. While the perfume industry was exploring the same concept through sweet and non-innovative accords, Thomas Fontaine has given birth to a fragrance for those who follow the frenetic pace of social networking but have their own identity. On the skin, Selfie is resinous, almost sticky. There is a mixture of medicinal and incense; citrus and sweet; as if the gum extracted from the trees was so mesmerizing that we want to bring it to the mouth, even if the taste is bitter. At the same time, we have a floral side that exhales continuously. And at the bottom of this rich elixir, a creamier base; not sweet, but sweetened. Selfie is not a perfume of much evolution, but it surprises by the difference. Over time, it makes me imagine a cold day, a gray suede jacket and a very comfortable scent of perfume - still from the previous day - on the collar and wrists, leaving a will to repeat and never again use another, at least not with this jacket. And I'm not talking about the scent of leather if that sensation has passed through your mind. It is suede itself, with a gentle and comfortable touch, but covered by a resin that has run liquid and solidified over time, leaving an incredible smell (and some stains to remember). Selfie is a beautiful perfume and does not automatically remind me of any others I've ever felt. It walks through several olfactory families: from the woody, passing through the floral and ending in the oriental-spicy. It exhales well at first but loses strength very fast. It does not have high lasting, but you still can feel on the skin after six hours. In my opinion, it is the type of fragrance that deserved more projection, even if the durability remained the same. To conclude, I say the following: Selfie is not a generic perfume and does not bring a loaded base of vanilla or any other gourmand accord. And truth be told, Selfie is not the face of the Millennials, but of those who have passed the age of 30, have already experienced many fragrances and want to stand out from the pattern. It is the perfume for those who decide what to wear before posting, not for those who obey influencers.

I bought this on the spot after considering many others and finally deciding to get this pretty much on a whim after Selfie was the last one I sampled. I've gotta say I love it! Ridiculous name and the fact there's a mirror on the box can be forgiven because it's such a rich experience. Selfie really is incredibly boozy, the opening is like a mixture between sweet sherry and spiced rum, it has the warming qualities of spices & mixed fruits. It then becomes very heavy with a honey/maple vibe of angelica which despite the obvious gourmand feel, actually serves to make it a little darker and more grown up. It dries down to a deeply resinous benzoin/styrax, I even get Labdanum too, anyway a warm but unsettling base that's a bit dry and leathery. It has some of the qualities of Marquis de Sade but no where near as serious and leathered. The problem I have with many of these Olfactive studios fragrances is that I haven't come across one with serious staying power yet! Unfortunately Selfie is no different but dries down to a lovely warm skin scent and if the performance was that much of an issue for me I probably wouldn't have bought it. Selfie is Superb for me but obviously not to everyone's tastes judging by the votes on here.

I’m not sure why this gets such a bad rap. It’s herbal and a touch sweet and boozy and nothing is too much. It’s very much straight up unisex. It has everything but in a good way and I really enjoy it. The Angelica is prominent and the resins give it some sweetness but it’s not sweet of that makes sense. The dry down is very beautiful and it lasts a long time. I sprayed at 7.30 and reapplied at 2 but it was still smelling and wafting. I really enjoy it. Don’t be put off trying it! X I’m vaguely reminded of jo malone 154 but it’s a vagueness... trying to pin point where I’ve smelt something similar but it’s eluding me....

Selfie is a mysterious fragrance that is warm and enveloping from the start to finish. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ What does selfie actually smell like: It starts with a blast of suede accord with the mix of elemi and star anise. There is a hint of ginger that gives the scent a zing and incense that mystery. There is a medicinal/ herbal undertone that is given by the note of angelica. Selfie also smells kinda sticky (not in a sweet or a bad way), I guess it resins mixed with the accord of maple syrup. Dry down is also where Selfie shines. Balsamic vanilla! Selfie is one of the scents that is more on the unique side. I can totally imagine it not being for everyone. However, for someone who appreciates resinous scents, I could see them loving this. I also don’t see a younger person pulling this off. Selfie is best suited for this part of the year fall/winter. It’s a scent that doesn’t project like a monster but sits close to the skin for a long long time.

This is very much like Serge Lutens Arabie to me, although a little more on the herbal side. And this seems to dissapear very quickly whereas that one lasts a bit longer (though that one isn't an amazing laster either but few hours definitely.) This one has a slight celery note somehow too. But after drydown all the spicy is gone whereas Arabie remains very spicy. That one is much better in my opinion.

Modern,urban and "strange". Selfie is pungent,different and unusual.. I am very difficult to distinguish the notes. Suitable for cold days, sillage is soft and the average longevity (6-7 hours). Overall it smells good, but I do not know if worth the price.. but not bad !. Sillage: 5.5/10 Longevity: 6/10 Scent: 7/10 Overall: 7./10

I had such high hopes for this, notes soud great and I love this brand. But it turned out to be one of the most difficult scents to understand. Difficult is not necessary bad as a rule of thumb, but something about this mix is impossible for my nose to comprehend to even begin to start liking it. It's a medicinal mess, I may try to understand some time again in the future.

Not my selfie this one. Its nicely smelling green, slightly sweet, smoky and woody profile appears blurred to me, it does not have the crystal clarity Monsieur Fontaine achieves in his Patou collection for example. Overall not a fragrance that will leave a trace for me. **(***)

Selfie is a modern unisex chypre with spice! I was drawn to the name of the fragrance and the composition of notes. This is a mature, unusual and aromatic green scent, with a modern slant. Lots of notes for a 2015 fragrance including incense, ginger/cinnamon, resins, patchouli, oak moss, suede, angelica, lily, styrax and sandalwood. Some of the notes read like ingredients in an older classic chypre or Oriental but some of the notes read like a modern spice-gourmand scent, something like oh say Kenzo L'Elephant except with a decidedly more aromatic and more pungent masculine aggressive kind of smell. This is not a teenage girl in a thong taking a selfie in her bathroom mirror but an older man in a button-up dress shirt open to reveal his hairy chest and wearing grey slacks looking Clooney-esque and taking a selfie for a dating website. The maturity of the deep notes says it all. I detect some galbanum and burnt grass kind of smell, incense, resins, spices, sandalwood, and only the slightest bit of florals (lily and angelica) which does nothing to sweeten up this very dry and edgy scent. There is a maple sap note which can't be missed which smells like a combination of sweet honey and amber. This is a good intro to modern fragrances and it has a nod to old time chypres with an artificial chemical oak moss scent. Oak moss is long gone in perfumery so to have this note in this fragrance is a treat. The thing is though it is not 100 percent a chypre nor a frag that takes you out into the woods. It's totally urban and bohemian or rather boho-chic, artsy, somewhat intellectual even. It's for a jazz musician or pianist, bereted, turtle-necked, black-wearing guy, smoker, dark little shades a la Elton John. The patchouli is not of the herbal type but more like cannabis. Very liberal. This is a fragrance to wear to a nightclub for some allure and mystery and to an art gallery or museum. Very sophisticated and exciting. The cologne can be worn in winter time and wouldn't smell as good in spring and summer. It's warm musk and suede in the driest stage, very spicy and balsamic. This is a good juice. Glad I got it.

A pastoral herbal concoction that has nothing to do with modern-day selfie practices, but it can still in its own way speak about introspection of another kind: rustic escapes, manor houses, shady cabinets to write novels or read. Solitude in the most calming sense of the word. I, like others, smell mostly galbanum, ginger, the dryness of angelica over a slightly mossy base from previous eras. Also, the paper smell of new books, an air of brand new suede book covers. And, as another user had mentioned, "a mixture of medicinal and incense", this is so true. The whole thing smells very unfashionable, probably "neo-classic", or "neo-rustic", if you prefer, in a way quite different from any other Olfactive Studio creation. But, give it to Jardins d'Ecrivains and they will rename it to Virginia Woolf. Give it to Histoires de Parfums and they will name it after Giovanni Boccaccio, maybe. One of those scents discontinued because of the wrong context.

Just spotted a shockingly good deal on Fragrancenet.com for a 100ml tester (with cap!) of this for $64 US - right on the heels of a shockingly low price for a Gerlain LUI tester. I can only hope they have a few more surprises in store. I'll update as soon as I get it, but maple, angelica, suede and anise? Yes please :) Update: Holy cow what a fragrance. I don't know if I'll ever wear this for others because it's frankly baffling, but I cannot stop smelling it. Sometimes it comes across as astringent, then soft floral and vanilla, then almost like the smell you get observing dusty sunbeams through an attic window. Then all three together. Once it dries down it's closer to a soapy balsamic vanilla, but you get a good 1-2 hours of baffling, amazing weirdness - though I have a hunch it might work very differently on others' skin.

In the opening it smells a little synthetic and to be honest not really pleasant. But it gets better in the dry down. It's hard to describe the dry down but it has the resinous notes, floral notes, and of course maple syrup. In the dry down the scent has a modern and unique character. The scent is not something that I personally like. There is also the problem of price tag that I believe is too high for what the juice does, though I really like their bottle design, packaging and generally the way that Olfactive Studio presents its products!

The smell of the smokey incense under a wool rug. The essence of a dusted basement of secrets. It has been left for years and now it is open to seek the treasure that it held. That basement is "selfie". The name doesn't fit the juice at all but the juice is one exceptional gem. Selfie amazes me everytime I spray it on! It reminds me allot of "Lapis Philosophorum" by Olivier Durbano. I used to misunderstand the concept and the essence tull I kept on applying more than 4 or 5 times and realized the charm it brings.. exceptional.

Got this today and when I sprayed it on my brain lit up because it reminded me of a perfume that I have in house for years now namely Yatagan by Caron, so I sprayed this one on to compare and even though the opening is completely different of course, once it start's to dry down they seem to come close to each other. So they are not the same for sure but for me in the same category, although I find Yatagan to be a more bolder performer then this one.

Smells very much like pencil. Quite unique but nothing special that gives the "wow feeling". Scent: 5/10 Longevity: 4/10 Projection: 5/10

This perfume is really hard to digest for me. It is that galbanum.
