#153 of My Fragrance Journey - Ormonde Jayne Verano: The summer scent that never raises its voice Verano doesn't do the usual summer thing where everything's shouting citrus at you. It's quieter than that. Restrained, almost stubbornly so, like it's decided the whole loud-synthetic-brightness approach just isn't for it. Instead of hitting you over the head, it settles into this balance - you and the air around you sort of existing together rather than one overpowering the other. Opens with grapefruit, orange, bergamot - clean, light, not sharp at all, more like a breeze crossing over warm skin than anything aggressive. Tart, yeah, refreshing, but none of that shower-gel harshness you get in half the citrus fragrances out there. Genuinely rare, a citrus opening that actually lifts your mood instead of just waking you up. Twenty, thirty minutes in, it shifts - smoothly, never gets heavier though. Iced tea notes start showing up, some soft greenery and florals tucked in alongside it. Citrus never actually leaves; it just gets folded into this lighter, glowier heart, and that's honestly where Verano finds its own thing. Tobacco's worth stopping on for a second. Not the usual dense, smoky, sweet version you smell in most tobacco-forward fragrances. This one's green. Transparent, almost sparkling, like tobacco leaves sitting in a room with the windows thrown open. Gives the whole thing structure without adding any weight or darkness - that's really what sets it apart from other summer aromatics trying to do something similar. Base is natural woods, dry and disciplined, just enough to keep things from evaporating too fast. Doesn't call attention to itself, just holds the composition together quietly. There's a kind of sensuality in it too, but subtle - tactile, masculine-leaning, no bravado about it. More about a quiet presence than anything performative. Wears like linen in late afternoon shade, lingers a bit like iced tea does on a hot day, if that makes sense as a comparison. Projection stays close, arm's length really, and I think that's deliberate. It's not trying to fill a room. It wants you near enough to actually notice it, which fits the whole honest, unpretentious thing it's got going. Price is on the higher side, and you can feel where that money went - every transition's handled with real care. Compared to something like Montabaco Intensivo, which hits harder and projects further, Verano's asking a premium for something quieter. Some people will find that a stretch. But there's a versatility here, a sophistication, that I think earns its place if you're after understated over loud. Masculine-leaning, sure, but it avoids the usual clichés that come with that label. Everything sits in balance. Less about spectacle, more about a presence that feels timeless without trying too hard to be. Vibe: Iced tea in late afternoon shade. Linen warmed by sun. Tobacco leaves with the windows open. Performance: Moderate, close-wearing projection - stays within arm's length rather than filling a room, holds steady without demanding attention. Fit: Summer days that call for restraint over noise. I love this new version of Verano, as soon as I smelled it in Selfridges I knew I'd have to get it. My female housemate also loves it, it's now one of her favourites in my collection and it's been a while since one has broken into her list of faves, so make of that what you will. A very luxurious smelling summer scent, the main stand out notes being the tobacco, grapefruit and tea for me. It's a pretty unique smelling fragrance too. Performance is pretty good, with longevity, projection and sillage all being what I would consider as the higher end of average. I also got a really good deal on the 88ml and 2 x 10mls for £10 less than the price of the 88ml by itself from Harrods, so look out for that type of deal.

This is a reformulation/ new version. An amazing luxury smelling summer fragrance. Opens with a citrus bomb scent, with a strong juicy grapefruit note. This stays for the entire longevity of it. Then the green airy tobacco leaves enter which give the scent harmony and personality, also adds the luxury twist. The tobacco leaves can be quite strong for some throughout the first hour, but I enjoy it. Overall, the best in the Montabaco line (previously montabaco verano), since all the others are redundant and the intensivo I see very annoying and strong. Verano took the pros of intensivo and got rid of the cons of it INO.

Ormonde Jayne has been stealing my heart as of late. Have fallen in love with Montabaco Rio, Bijou Zafran, and now Verano. Incredibly well-blended, high quality stuff. The tobacco note in Verano strikes me as more subtle than it is in Rio, which I don't mind. It's a phenomenal bright, airy, fresh citrus blend that doesn't smell quite like any of the others I currently have in this category. I think this is versatile and signature scent-able - doesn't need to be relegated to just the warmer months. Just fantastic.

This is a really well done fresh blue fragrance. I love what houses like this can do for fresh fragrances. It reminds me of the Percival/Fierce/Legend DNA but, more fresh and woody at the same time. It just smells clean but in an out of the shower way, not a in a linen way.

I got my husband a decant to wear at our wedding. His suit was navy and it was honestly the perfect choice, he got so many compliments, and every time he came near me I loved it. It’s a slightly sweet, tea-like aromatic scent, very classy.

Reminds me of tygar/vibrato/aqua de dora DNA but less round and a bit spicier/dirtier I would perefer the grapefruit to stay clean and round but this one is still very nice

Verano is a freshie from the house of OJ, and it comes off very modern and molecular. It’s very nice, but honestly, it fails to distinguish itself significantly in the crowded market of fresh fragrances. Upon initial application, the fragrance exudes a refreshing and airy quality, characteristic of OJ fragrances. A burst of citrus notes, predominantly grapefruit and bergamot, creates an invigorating opening. As the fragrance evolves, the citrus notes dissipate, giving way to a soothing tea note, complemented by the subtle presence of rose and cardamom in the background. Over time, the signature sandalwood of OJ emerges in the base, imparting a woody undertone to the overall composition. This is the predominant impression I get from the majority of the life of the fragrance. In my opinion, this perfume is unisex and suitable for individuals of all ages and occasions, whether formal or casual. However, being a freshie, it is most appropriate for summer and spring, with daytime being the ideal time to use it. The performance of this perfume is somewhat underwhelming, however. It has moderate projection and lasts approximately 5.5 to 6 hours. My experience is based on a bottle with the batch number 5008250-03043. While the scent profile is pleasant, it lacks any groundbreaking qualities.

Verano is a fresh and lovely fragrance for summer. In the opening, you can think of it as the summery sister of Montabaco Intensivo. After about 30–45 minutes, it also starts to slightly wink at Valaya Exclusif.In my opinion, if you don’t want to smell like everyone else and you’re looking for a different kind of summer fragrance, this is a very nice option. For longevity, refreshing it once during the day should be enough. 😊

This is so refreshing! Smells like a luxurious hotel lobby at a summer resort. Like iced tea and fresh greenery. Fresh and a little sweet.

Not a fan. It does come off modern which, in this case, really only means molecular/synthetic. If there are any naturals in this, they are squashed. It has no personality, non transportive, and remains super linear which is all great if you want a long, boring experience with an added headache. I’m ok with spending $$$ on a fragrance, but here the high price - low quality = low perceived value. There are much better perfumes out there at a similar price point.

Unbelievable quality and so so unique. Smells like a billionaire in Monaco. So clean, fresh, masculine & also packs a punch. I don't think this would suit the younger crowd however. I'd say its better suited to age 25+. I am 27 and would feel very comfortable wearing it, but I probably wouldn't have worn it 5 years ago or so. I have tried and owned hundreds of niche fragrances and this is very impressive to me. Can't believe I actually took so long to try anything from Ormonde Jayne. I also got samples of several other fragrances from the brand which I will be trying soon. Now back to Verano... The opening is so fresh, airy and smooth, with grapefruit and a little hint of the tea coming through. A few minutes later the suede and tobacco appear in the background, which are both still soft and fresh. I did hear numerous reviews stating how unusual it is to have suede and tobacco in a fresh fragrance and I was sceptical, but somehow they have managed to make it work perfectly. I am going to Croatia in a few days and I think this will suit perfectly.

This was a blind buy based on the notes and it has been my most successful blind purchase ever. This is my type of fragrance in every way, it’s fresh but creamy, light but thick without ever getting cloying and airy enough to be worn whatever the occasion. The tobacco note only shows its face for the first 30 mins or so on my skin and I don’t mind it at all but that dry down is incredible, I know there’s a bunch of fragrances that this has been compared to but I think it’s a unique take, there’s nothing I’ve smelt so far or have in my collection that smells like this. Brilliant first impression on the house and time to explore some of their other gems, I’m hearing good things about Rio, next blind buy pending

My number three fragrance and one of the most underrated gems in niche perfumery. Verano captures the feeling of an endless Mediterranean summer; bright citrus, aromatic herbs, and soft woods blended with incredible refinement. What I love most is how effortlessly elegant it feels. It's fresh and uplifting, yet sophisticated and distinctive, never smelling like a typical summer fragrance. Quiet luxury in a bottle. Every time I wear it, I'm reminded that simplicity, when done this well, can be truly exceptional.

This kinds sneaks up on you. Lovely drydown, wafts ebb and flow all day long. The light tobacco is green, clean fresh and give a solid backbone. I am enjoying this. Signature scent worthy.

A reformulation, one would assume, accompanying the name change. Probably one of the 2024 banned ingredients in the former mixture...
