Eau de Gloire

Parfum D'Empire Eau de Gloire, part of the Corsican Heritage line, this fragrance was probably the first release from the house as an homage to the beautiful island of Corsica and its flavors. It was a late discovery for me. I don't know why it took me so long to try it. Maybe because of the name, while also not being mentioned a lot. It is, however, one of my favorites from the house. I think of it as an agrestic and aromatic leather-chypre. If you like perfumes like Bel Ami and more modern takes on that theme like Puredistance M, you'll find much to enjoy here. It takes that DNA and brings something unique to it. Apparently, Marc-Antoine put together not only the most "Corsican" aromas in this composition but also the flavors that supposedly were favored by the most legendary figure the small island has given us, Napoleon Bonaparte. And yes, I can totally see him wearing something like this. The mix of notes and accords is rather bizarre and somehow feels familiar. It is a very complex and unique-smelling perfume. The opening is juicy, intensely spicy, and aromatic. Zesty clementines, lots of piquant plants and herbs, of which I strongly pick up the rosemary and myrtle. Loads of anise that pairs brilliantly with a subtle tea accord. It smells like a countryside kitchen in full action. I don't pick up the lavender, although listed, but I get the immortelle with soft tobacco and hay-like facets. The base goes strongly into the Bel Ami territory with leather and moss, a surprisingly high dose of frankincense, faint cistus, and musks. It is such a ride from the beginning, and while certain aspects of it feel familiar, at not one point does it feel repetitive. It does its own thing and stays true to its origin. I feel this perfume is Marc-Antoine Corticchiato bottled. The very soul of Parfum D'Empire. While not my favorite from the house, I think it is the most representative and intricate among them. And one last thing. For people who are still mourning after Œillères, I would give this one a try. From everything I have tried, to me it feels like the closest thing to the discontinued Roberto Greco scent. A terribly underrated perfume. IG:@memory.of.scents

Glory Water, or Water of Glory. Supposedly inspired by Napoleon, a Corsican native, and dually functioning as a tribute to Corsica, I can’t really say I find either in Eau de Glorie. What I do find is a love letter to the mossy chypres of the classic French style. Glory is not really a feeling I get from the perfume, but love, devotion, admiration, those types of feelings, yes. The hesperidic opening is unusually bracing for the style. In typical classic chypres the bergamot, and other fruits if there are any, are gauzy and tissue-paper crinkly, but in Glorie they are big, sour, oily and zesty, with plenty of bitter pith. The classic addition of lavender adds depth and dimension, parched green herbs and a touch of florals. Immediately, and with a fervent muscularity, an oakmoss accord blooms like a swelling heart. Touches of spice, leather, and immortelle give the damp, woody greens beautiful touches of leathery browns, earthy blacks, and a golden sunshine. Oakmoss is an accord lost to perfumery these days. Very few make it big and forward because, one, you can’t use the real deal in enough volumes to get that really classic profile, and two, it’s old school and too many brands are afraid of being too retro. Not Corticchiato. Even now, 23 years on, he still keeps Eau de Glorie unashamedly itself and true to its original intention. Many balk at Eau de Glorie - “what’s the big deal? Haven’t we had this hundreds of times before?” And that’s not an invalid perspective. However, it’s in the details that Eau de Glorie stands out: the zesty hesperidics are more zesty and sour and realistic than we’re used to; the herbs are greener, more herbal, more parched and intense; the leather is clearer and not muddy animalic; and the immortelle bridges anisic and tobacco qualities in a pretty unique way for the genre. Wearing Eau de Glorie is like finding a letter stuffed away in a box from an old flame or a dear family member, these letters are common to us all yet each one is unique to the writer and unique to you but the feelings are universal: a heart warming memory that puts a smile on your face.

راههای افتخار EAU DE GLOIRE یک عطر ممتاز و بسیار زیباست. تلخه ولی شیرینه.ملایمه اما سنگینه.گیاهیه اما مرکباتش با کیفیتن. تنباکوییه ولی حس خاکی جذابی داره و... این عطر؛نوشتن ازش سخته و فقط باید از چالشی که آکوردهاش ایجاد میکنن لذت برد. در شروعش حس مرکبات و یه حس گیاهی و تلخ از لاوندر و شیرین و گلی؛حضور دارن که آروم آروم به سمت انیسه و شیرین بیان حرکت می کنه بی اونکه سردرگم و گنگ بشه و حس گیاهی و مرکباتی اولیه گم بشن.انیسه و شیرین بیان فضایی تند و شیرین به کار میدن که رایحه ای ضعیفی از چرم در حاشیه حس میشه.کیفیت عطر انقد بالا هست که همه ی نتها و فضاهایی که میسازن به خوبی احساس میشن و قلب کار رو بسیار زیبا و با شکوه میکنن.این شکوه به حدی هست که اعتماد به نفس و قدرت شما رو ناخوداگاه بالا می بره! هر چه زمان جلو میره یه حس تلخ و دودی از آمیزش تنباکو و کندر بالا میاد که در کنارش چرم هم حالا کمی پر زورتر میشه و این سه ضلع و فضای دودی و تلخ حاصل از اتحاد اونها؛جبهه ی شیرین و تند گیاهی ابتدایی رو کمی کنار میزنن و از اونها یه حس گس و تند باقی میذارن. عطری که به مشام میرسه در این لحظه دودی و سنگین بخاطر بخور و کندر و چرم؛ خاکی؛گیاهی و تند و کمی شور بخاطر انیسه؛لاوندر و خزه هست. بویی بسیار زیبا و دلنشین و شیک و جدی که خیلی دوسش دارم. هر از گاهی یه نسیم شیرین هم در این فضای سنگین می پیچه که یه لبخند سرمستانه رو لبا میشونه... این فضای عالی تا پایان کار ادامه خواهد داشت و فقط کمی جنبه ی چوبی و مردانه تر می گیره به خودش. نکته ی جالبی که برام تو این عطر وجود داشت تنباکو بود.تنباکوی بکار رفته تو این کار؛میوه ای و تکراری و البته خسته کننده نیست.حس برگهای نیمه خشک تنباکو رو داره که کمی تازه هستن؛اما خشکی و خاکی هم هستن و استادانه این حس رو از تنباکو استخراج کردن. ماندگاری خوب و پخش قابل قبول عطر و فضای زیبایی که داره اونو مناسب هوای بهار و پاییز کرده و به نظر بخوبی خودشو نشون خواهد داد در این فصول. این عطر بیشتر مردانه هست تا یونیسکس و اسمی که داره بعلاوه ی فضای دودی و سنگین پایانش منو بطرز عجیبی یاد شاهکار راههای افتخاراز استاد کوبریک بزرگ و کلنل دکس با بازی بیاد ماندنی کرک داگلاس میندازه!! کامنت:م.ع (سایت لوکس بایر (با امکان تست سمپل

This is by far the most effortlessly elegant fragrance i own so far. Not an elegance of high heels and long gowns, but the "sporty", casual natural elegance of simple yet well made, high quality things. Simply stunning. Inspired in Napoleon and old school perfumery, this wonderful EDT opens with a very herbal blast of sweet lavender with some citrus notes on top. Lavender is the main player in this perfume, but as it warms up in the skin the depth of it' base composed with leather, tobacco (both very noticeable), clove, a tiny bit of sirupy immortelle and resins starts to be very apparent. The over all effect is similar to an exquisite cologne smelt from some distance, but as you come closer you can clearly detect it's depth, and "dark side", but never feeling heavy, it pretty much stays very herbal (quite an intensive herbal feel..almost effervescent to the nose at first even tho it calms down to a smoother creamier base), "naturally clean" (not soapy at all) but keeping the sweetness of the lavender from beginning to the end. In it's final stages the dense resinous base turns into the mail player, but still holds some herbal sweetness from the lavender, and the scent stays closer to the skin in a warm, cozy layer. it also turns slightly more animalic, rather than naturally herbal clean. A masterpiece perfectly blended, hidden under it's "simple elegance" appearance. But make no mistake, there's depth there and there's a very skilled hand behind the creation of this perfume. 10/10 and this line consolidating more and more in my top 3 fav houses. Amazing quality for it's price (even for the new prizes)

I have a sample and this gets complimented by men in droves. Usually women are more liberal with the flattery even when I wear masculine scents I’ll have more women ask me what I’m wearing and they’ll even want it for themselves. But this scent had guys of every age bracket every style and aesthetic coming up to me almost jaw droppingly in love with this. And a couple of them had their girlfriends there agreeing it was beautiful. This has only happened with my amouages and aromatics elixir and Liam but I gave that one away. But yeah I was frustrated bc I felt like the scent disappeared after an hour but there’s no way if people were complimenting me the entire day. Must just personally go nose blind to it after a bit. Now to the scent itself.... It smells like sweet boiling summer air. So much so that when I wore it at home the first time I kept turning around to check who broke into my house and let the outside southern heat blow in. This happened like 5 times before I realized I was smelling myself. I need to own this bc it’s just so evocative and spellbindingly realistic it conjures up so many memories of being sun dazed and free in the scorching summer days of youth. But interpreted through an adults mature taste. Makes you yearn to feel that free and whole now before life took a hold of you. This is what I need a perfume to do and parfum d’empire achieves this almost every time

Beautiful fragrance retro style, very Mediterranean court, which reminds me a bit to the old eaux de toilettes that put me every day my mother when I was child, this has much to do as citrus, lavender and oak moss. Admission is soft, very fresh with a floral point and another point very aromatic maintained for almost the whole evolution of the fragrance, this balance is very well managed. Rounding is very good, to achieve Corticchiato makes all this mixture becomes more complex: the anis, tea and snuff rounded stockings and leather notes kept at bay oak moss. The aroma is not very powerful or burdensome, and very aggressive but if it is very delicate and elegant, perfect for daytime use and warm days for their soft and beautiful trail. Rating: 7.5

Fresh but not too citric like many summer/spring fragrances nowadays. For me 'Eau de Gloire' is an excellent fresh, aromatic, slightly sweet warm weather fragrance. On my skin I can smell sweet amber (I know it is not listed as a note... might be the mixture of other ingredients that reminds me of amber), light tobacco, smooth leather. They all blend together perfectly. Interestingly it smells rather spicy and fougere on me. The price is also affordable, compared to other niche fragrances. Sillage and longevity is moderate. I can only recommend this.

L'Eau de Gloire : before trying it, I thought it was something complex and sophisticated, something to wear in great society. You may, but not only! Pyramid is complex but it results a simple, evident, elegant and fresh fragrance. With this one, imagine yourself alone in an aromatic landscape, "le maquis", opening an "eau de vie" bottle, let's say a "chartreuse": "Mon verre est plein d’un vin trembleur comme une flamme" Guillaume Apollinaire, Nuit rhénane,Alcools. Take time. A contemplative one, 8/10

Refreshing, aromatic and uplifting, this is a beautiful fragrance with a elegant 'masculin’ signature, on a par with Chanel pour Monsieur or Eau de Guerlain. A joy to wear, all the way from its sparkling, herbaceous opening with bergamot, neroli, lavender and rosemary to the lazy dry down of oranges on a bed of soft, soft leather and oakmoss. Sophistication in a bottle!

To id : in fact, it's a false EDT and a real EDP ! The perfumer told me that it was his first fragrance for Parfum d'Empire, and at that time his colleagues recommended him to call it EDT, in spite of its EDP concentration. Because it was more usual at that time for a mixt fragrance, I suppose. Afterwards, he asserted himself and called EDP all his other creations.

Une fougère classique au départ. Lavande, bergamote avec un coté plus gourmand apporté par l'anis et la réglisse. Puis on bascule vers un coté Bel Ami. La note de cuir est présente mais pas agressive et se mêle au coté gourmand de la chose, en restant relativement frais.

Simply beautiful, pleasant and sophisticated. Very nice and calm fragrance

I've purchased the new itinerary as in EDP concentrate in a 50 ml bottle. High-quality ingredients, smoothest transition, and roundness are the reasons why I paid. Some relate to Bel Ami well I can see that. To me, this is better than the recent Bel Ami. I can't tell about each note as the blend is well crafted, but the rosemary and labdanum are obvious and lovely. My wife has allergic reactions to most perfumes. She always asks me to spray at the balcony or away from her. Anyway, one morning before we both leave for work, without her knowledge, I sprayed Eau De Gloire for the first time twice in the next room and walk around the house. She didn't say a word. We left the apartment and while we are in that small lift again no word. We got into our car again she didn't say a word. After a while, I asked 'can't you smell my new fragrance?'. She responded 'I can...it is OK'. So it explains the quality ingredients far from chemicals that generally trigger her allergic reactions. I get absolutely no sinus irritation, which a lot of contemporary frags can cause; I can bury my nose in Eau De Gloire & inhale deeply over & over again. But I suspect the performance is not like an EDP. So the company asked more prices for less juice than their 2000s offering. You can see the sprayer sprays like a mist. So I suggest spraying at least 4 times in the fall and spring, 3 in Summer. Skip this in wintertime. This and a couple of other Parfum d'Empire EDPs seems to have a longevity of between 6 to max 10 hours. Eau De Gloire is 6 hours which is fine but I wish it projected more for a couple of hours. Sillage...? I am not sure.

Another one from Parfum d'Empire that packs an opening punch. This one feels like a top notch, old-fashioned, 1950s gentleman's soap. Aromatic but also cool and powdery. I could have sworn there was going to be iris or violet in here. Instead the stars of the show are the top notes of mastic accompanied by myrtle and a light incense to give a spicy, greenish bitter-sweet accord when fused with the citruses — cool neroli and bergamot. There's plenty of straw-like immortelle in the heart which, with rosemary and moss, creates a beautiful, very light fougère-like background. The labdanum was quiet on my skin with not much leather or amber showing. Eau de Gloire definitely has that old school gentleman vibe — a little tweedy and outdoorsy. I felt a cut above walking around in it. And I'm looking forward to giving it a run in the dry heat of summer. I find it closer in spirit (and superior) to Sisley's Eau d'Ikar , which is similarly inspired by Corsica and features mastic, rather than the more straightforward fougère-leather of Hermès' Bel Ami other reviewers have highlighted.

Yesterday for the first time I tried Caron's Yatagan (the recent formula) and found out that Marc-Antoine Corticchiato copied it in his first release back in 2003! Yatagan is a village in the southwest of Turkey surrounded by maquis due to the warm dry weather. Caron was inspired by that back then, so does Marc-Antoine later on. When you drive your car in Summer you can smell (dry) herbs such as oregano, rosemary, basil, lavender... The high quality of ingredients is obvious in both. No burn for the nostrils. Performance is even the same. Both retail around 95 Euros. But Eau De Gloire is no longer 100 ml Eau de toilette, it is now 50 ml and EDP, whereas Yatagan is 125 ml EDT. Shame on you Parfum D'Empire! When I am done with it I'll purchase Yatagan next time. As in this, my wife didn't smell Yatagan when she get into my car even though I sprayed only a few minutes ago! Both are for yourself not others. At least I can get whiffs of both for a few hours. Spend your 95 Euros on the recent Yatagan instead of this, you get the same juice for MORE.

Opens medicinal, spicy, quite masculine (lavender) and a bit powdery, mixed with citrus notes. Soon the notes mellow down into a powdery blend of spices and herbs. Star anise is the strongest, with a hint of immortelle and clove and a tiny bit of citrus. Then darker notes appear, tobacco, leather and strong resinous notes. The scent mellows down into a herbal aromatic scent, quite dark and a bit powdery. The tea notes also show up in this phase. The drydown reminds me of a bundle of various dried herbs, with earthy notes as well. It is a bit dusty and smoky, with liquorice and fresh citrus on top. Sillage moderate to heavy, longevity moderate. This is a quite dark and heavy scent, very masculine (not sure if I can pull this off). Very earthy. The leather turns into some sort of earthy dusty note on my skin, like dried soil that you are crumbling between your fingers. Quite pleasant, but maybe a wee bit too masculine for me to wear. I would however very much like to smell this on someone else and use the bottle occasionally!

Sampling indoors and in winter, I'm struggling to get on with this fragrance: the floral, fruit and herbal notes are too complex at the opening and I'm already anxious about my partner's reaction to its potency. It's as if a couple of bottles of perfume have been spilled in a confined space and their scents have mingled together in a rather chaotic and overpowering way. I imagine wearing it on a day in midsummer, when the maquis is in full bloom and I can stride through its volatility confident that I will reach a vantage point: perspective, pleasure, peace. Wearing it on the skin, it maintains this immersive, sightly claustrophobic quality. That bundle of Mediterranean fragrances keeps drawing me in. On a grey winter morning, the maquis comes to me!

To me this smells like woody oriental fragrance, starting off with quite a lot of bergamot (which I adore, when it's done well), lavender, some licorice and a leathery background. About fifteen minutes in, I can smell mainly leather, a lot of tobacco and some incense, and I find it very nice, up to the point of considering a purchase. It's mildly sweet, well rounded and completely wearable for a girl. Doesn't last that long, but it lingers on your skin for some time.

A nice refreshing tea base with spices, fruity sweetness and dry herbal scents from oakmoss and tobacco. This is the kind of scent I want to wear in a summer afternoon when I am working alone in my room. Keep me fresh and stay focused. Definitely a good perfume for hot weather when you want something heavier than a simple cologne. Also I feel that Eau de Gloire is a more unisex version of New York Intense (Nicolai). They are both beautiful creations.

Could I say that this eau de toilette has a particular character? I think it has the character that we want to take, leading to the memory of an important moment of our lives. In my case this scent takes me to decisions, to distant places, but not for its components but by what it makes me feel. There is an olfactory journey, it is rather an introspective journey through an olfactory pathway.

Herbal and green at the start but it gets better with time as the strong herbal smell fades and the leather note comes in the front. I would rather spray this in my gloves and just leave it there. The leather note here reminds me a bit of Je Suis Un Homme. But it is a quite unique scent I must admit. Do not blind buy it! Scent: 7/10 Longevity: 8/10 Projection: 7/10

A distant cousin of Belami. This is a leather scent but it comes out more herbal and green in my opinion. While I always keep Belami for winter I think this one might be suitable for any season. Performance is very good. Nothing groundbreaking but nothing offensive either. I wouldn’t be scared to blind buy it.

Light and smooth fougere with fruity and spicy opening and leathery, slightly salty dry-down. Fresh and aromatic as expected but more complex and creative than the usual fougeres. It develops fairly quickly and stays close to the skin. A decent uplifting masculine scent for warmer months.

On the mouillette this is Bel Ami d'Hermes variation Moschino pour Homme. Almost Totally. On my skin this is more soapy, smoky, peppery, canphor, sort of virgin bag leather, fresh made leather I mean A sweetish leather in little green little spicy little aromatic dress and fresh shoes.

Parfum d'Empire, Eau de Gloire. I am sitting opposite my father, he wears this scent today, and I smell a mix of a soft fougere and a mesmerizing smokey, ambery, tobacco scent.

Eau de Gloire is a fresh, aromatic scent, somewhat restorative and aromatherapy-like - fine in context, but not what I look for in perfume. It is more complex than the average freshie/fougère, but ultimately feels a little confused. The opening is an assault on the senses, but it fades fairly quickly. While not bad overall, it feels like the first misstep I've encountered so far from Parfum d'Empire. EdG opens with radiant citrus and camphorous myrtle - very bright and bracing. The lavender is quite prominent initially, smelling like pure essential oil. It settles somewhat as it develops, with a nice spicy-herbal accord developing on my skin, grounded by a fresh tea note. Anise adds a sweet-spicy quality, a pleasant addition to the citrus-herbal accord. It fades fast, and curiously, it becomes reminiscent of a swimming pool during its drydown phase - a development as unwelcome as it is unexpected. Some mossiness creeps in as it dries down. It becomes a musky, slightly salty skin scent at final fade. I don't get the rich amber base I expected from the listed notes. Sillage and longevity are moderate. An unusual aromatic freshie that doesn't quite work in my opinion, EdG is a masculine-leaning transeasonal day scent. Not for me, but kudos for the creativity. 2/5.

This smells exactly like the sample of a French lavender hand soap my mother got as a gift in the 90s. I wish I could remember who produced that soap. The resemblance is uncanny. It leans strongly towards female to me. Somebody who likes lavender + citrus hand soap might like this perfume. Personally, I don't like it and in my opinion the complexity of the notes listed does not do justice to its smell, which feels rather generic to me. It's not interesting or unusual as e.g. is Mal Aimé from the same house. Eau de Gloire gives me interior design boutique hand soap vibes. It's a pass from me but others might like it.

The opening reminds me of Zig Zag by Dana because of prominent lavender and anise notes. The difference comes only after but still it is not worth the money. I was expecting leather and tobacco but all I got was, as tessture already mentioned, only tobacco dust and no trace of leather at least on my skin. Alas. Longevity is good considering this is EDT.

Chemical plant let-down. No notes, just odors of the synthetic variety.

It smells like potpourri to me.

I always perceive this as a classic creation and I'm always surprised remembering it's been created in 2003. Bergamot, tangerine, round and full blooded, aromatic herbs and then the leather-like notes of cistus and immortelle. There's a sentimental connection to Bel Ami, but what makes it 21st century is a certain air of photorealism: the intoxicating aroma of real shrubland when heated by the blinding sun. It is far from refreshing. It has summer in it, but it's the heat of summer and the beautiful but also a bit too wild surrounding of plants used to grow without much fresh water or gardening. Sill, you can equally perceive this scent as a leathery barbershop creation, and that's the magic of it. ELDO also had a very similar fragrance in their line called Je Suis Un Homme, which was, strange enough, again dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, shifting the accents a bit towards stronger boozy and birch tar notes, leather boots and spice, but in the end of the day still quite similar. Yet while Je suis Un Homme counts much more on the attributes of the person, Eau de Gloire seems indeed like a tribute to the magnificence of the island and Nature herself, once you realize it goes deeper than bouquets of flowers and juicy lemons. That's the real glory we talk about here - a theme Marc-Antoine Corticchiato continued to pursue within the whole Héritage Corse collection, even creating a fragrance in praise of the weeds growing there. When various top notes of herbs, spices, and citrus line up just right, I sometimes detect an opening that reminds me of a spicy cola drink. The presence of star-anise often contributes. It happened here with 'Eau de Goire', and for a moment I wondered if I was about to experience a niche version of Youth-Dew! ..but alas, no. ....and this is not otherwise gourmand. The citrus backs off, and the aroma becomes ever more pungently herbal. Uncommon notes of myrtle and immortelle emphasize the scent's Mediterranean pedigree. Eventually the leather-dominant base arrives, At this point I also smelled an unlisted note of carnation. Carnation is always a complex synthetic accord and may appear without being fully intended, ..but then again this whole composition suggests a re-interpretaion of a classic gentleman's scent, so maybe some carnation is intended. Leather is really the note that most classifies this scent... and while it is rarely a favourite of mine. I can appreciate that this a 'clean' herbal-aromatic leather. The common clichés of smoky gentleman's club (or smoky biker bar, or smoky sportscar upholstery, or...) are thankfully avoided. So, to summarize, if one is seeking a niche reinterpretation of something that might reasonably be included under the vague notion of 'barbershop, this could be a very acceptable choice.

This fragrance is a lazy stroll through the woods on a warm spring day after a night of light rain. The woods are filled with various plants, herbs and flowers that add to the aroma of the walk. I stumble upon an old leather satchel filled with citrus and licorice. Taking the bag with me, I walk for hours until the woods turn into an expansive herb garden with incense softly blowing over the field. This is the vibe I get out of Eau De Glorie. A beautifully balanced, well blended and a very natural scent. EDG starts off as a clean, green, tea, moss, citrus scent with whiffs of floral and licorice on my skin. Soon a powdery note enters, quickly followed by a soft leather mixed with fresh tobacco notes that help to add to the earthy vibe. In the dry-down I get a very herbal scent with an incense top. Overall this is a soft scent, but present, not a skin scent. It is has a fresh spicy feel that is both refined and elegant, but more a casual fragrance than a suit fragrance IMO. Although this is listed as Unisex, I find it more masculine than feminine to my nose. Bottom line: This is not a ground breaking scent, but it is beautifully one. It is a great all round scent, good for almost any occasion. You should try a sample of this.

This was a blind buy (actually, a blind addition to my Christmas list :)) based on information on this website, and you were all bang-on! It is exactly as described and all that I had hoped to find. I've spent a lot of time (in the pre-COVID world) in the scrublands of the Mediterranean - maquis and garrigue, not only in Provence and Corsica but also in Italy, Greece and Spain. This perfume perfectly evokes that botanical landscape, from the sunny citrus to the fresh lavender and the savory rosemary and thyme. It is a strong, earthy scent and thus adequately masculine, without being at all musky. The fresh and floral elements give a feminine balance; I would call this a true unisex, suitable for men and women, even those without the least gender fluidity. For me, it evokes fresh air, sunshine, and long hikes near the ocean. Probably more of a spring/summer scent, but with its sturdy earthiness I am still enjoying it now in the winter weather. And - unlike some of the more Mediterranean scents based more thoroughly on citrus, it has good staying power.

The opening is very much a cup of Hustentee, the stuff you drink as a tea in German-speaking countries when you have a cough. Those typically contain anise, licorice, fennel, thyme, rosemary, and other herbs. In EDG Anise and licorice are very prominent and I would say, almost yelling "WHO'S THE BEST? WHO?" Will take some hard reverse-engineering of my nose to be not reminded of the cough tea from the opening of Eau de Gloire. Because of this background, EDG smells very medicinal, well, maybe therapeutic if I pushed really far, but drinking cough tea does not mean you are healed does it. From somewhere in the middle smokiness comes in, maybe I started a fire because obviously I've been sipping the cough tea, and with my sick shaky hands the matches did not start right for a couple times so makes me cough a bit more. Creative as a perfume, yes. Nice as a scent, well, really debatable. An interesting house that I didn't find a love in yet.

OK, it can't be a coincidence. This is at least the 3rd time that a PdE scent has reignited my passion for perfume after I lost interest. Eau de Gloire is exquisite. It's actually a two-in-one fragrance. During the first phase it's a very fine lavender and leather cologne, elegant, sophisticated, piquant-sour, with a hint of tobacco. Nothing groundbreaking so far, but unusually well done, of very high quality, the citruses, the herbs, the spices, all top-notch. That alone makes it stand out from the rest these days. Nothing suggests what's about to come. A couple of hours after application the scent morphs into a rich, resinous, ambery brew with a jammy-dried fruit vibe, sweet, full-bodied, warm. Lutens sends his greetings at this point. It stays like this for hours. Before it fades away, the leather note reappears to remind you of the remarkable progress this scent has made during the wear. Sillage and lasting power are both excellent.

For some reason the various and sundry components of Parfum d'Empire EAU DE GLOIRE add up to sage and light leather to my nose. I would describe this creation as fairly herbal and a bit earthy. Although I do detect leather, it's a mild version, not a hard-hitting one as in this house's AMBRE RUSSE. When I first donned EAU DE GLOIRE, it seemed obviously to be a men's cologne, although not as brash as some of them are. EAU DE GLOIRE smells much simpler than its pyramidal note line-up would lead one to expect. On my skin, it is rather linear and really does smell much more like sage and leather than any of the other usually readily identifiable notes: lavender, rosemary, oakmoss, etc. I like this low-key, natural-smelling composition, which has a bit of a chypre vibe, although it's somehow more gray than green.

Opens up interesting, citrusy green that is very enjoyable. After half an hour later it is more spicy but it retains its sourness in a good way - dare I say the drydown resembles some of Orto Parisi perfumes, except for the musk which is missing but other than that I get some similarity with the spices. That might explain why the drydown smells familiar (maybe cuoium). I find it interesting, it is giving a little bit of old school masculine fragrance. I will sample it more but if the scent is similar it won't be a full bottle buy for me. It really does need more on the longevity side (on another note this house has the best sprayer for samples). Azemour and Amour d'ete perform better. Update: I am not a fan of the drydown, it is too spicy on my skin. Not a full bottle buy.

There is something decidedly non-linear about Eau de Gloire. It's expertly blended by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, across all the notes but somehow I can sense the immortelle beginning, middle and dry down. Partly because it's such a distinct dry warm smell. Corsica is covered in shrubs, with those sprays of dirty yellow flowers. This fragrance could be called Eau de Corse, combining that mid-place between Italian & French, a classic dry herby cologne style fragrance. Yet EDP longevity. Wonderful stuff on this first impression. It's nuanced, always fresh and gentle, I wouldn't let any triumphant lineage stories put you off. If Napoleon Bonaparte is involved it seems inspired by that very moment when Bonaparte was trying to get Josephine to take him seriously!

A nice extended spicy eau de cologne, starting from lavender with subtle touches of citrus but very quickly transitioning to black tea, anise and licorice. Hint of smoke in the mid phase, and has that wonderful tea accord similar to the one in Ambre Russe (at least earlier bottles). The base is light and subtle with hints of tobacco, leather and moss. Dry from start to finish, and occasionally earthy. An old world meets new nuance in a good way, reserved, subtle and lots of character; requires over-application for enjoyment. The eau de parfum concentration could be misleading. A nice alternative to concentrated citrus colognes, especially if one is also looking to avoid anything too sweet. 3.5/5

Of course it has been discontinued, why wouldn't it when I love it so much? Apparently I bought the last sample of it from LS. When I returned for a bottle I saw that it is discontinued. I found a decant on The Perfumed Court and bought the remaining precious drops. Sigh. It is simply the best fresh/spicy/incense/green fragrance I have smelled. Sensuous even, and somewhat animalic on me. Bergamot is soft, not screaming and blended to perfection with other notes, drying down to a worn suede jacket steeped in light smoke of incense. Beautiful for year-round wear and worth it to buy one of the bottles left on ebay. Which I will. PdE is a master perfumer.

For me, there is no problem of remanence, it stays all day long, and very faithfully to the first minutes' olfactive image ; so it's not very "progressive" on my skin, just deliciously fresh, aromatic and quite syrupy. It reminds me of sweet liqueurs such as the french Chartreuse. We should point out the presence of everlasting flower (immortelle), which play an important part in that Corsican inspired fragrance. The nose Marc-Antoine Corticchiato is Corsican himself, and maybe you can feel that this composition really tells a true-life story.

Listed notes are: Lemon, orange, bergamot, lavender and Neroli, leather, sweet tobacco and olibanum. Starts bright and fresh,a lovely summery scent, but dry down turns dusty on me, as if it burned out all that lovely olfactory sunshine in the first two hours then had nothing left to give but a faint residue of tobacco dust and the gray soft dust you find on books when the library really needs attention. A shame. Hopefully it works better on others: The onset is very refreshing and light.

FRESH SOUR LEMON There is nothing artificial about this - very natural smelling. I did not get any leather notes (could that be the sour?) I'm not a big citrus fan - they tend to sour on my skin. But this fragrance's 'sour' note is intentional. It smells 'real' - not a deterioration of some note with my own skin's chemistry. This could be a nice find for someone looking for a unique fresh citrus fragrance.

"Eau Chyprée" *** Another good one from PdE. I love eaux...and when there is something different like in this one, it becomes much more appealing! The anisé touch and the suede note do it for me. Neither the best leathery cologne, that remains ELdO's Je Suis Un Homme, nor the best with immortelle, being Dior's Eau Noire my choice. Nevertheless, Eau de Gloire has some character with its chypré twist.
