J'ai Osé

I am in a lucky position to answer the question whether this is the same fragrance as the original Guy Laroche J'ai Osé. My father gave me the original in a Napoleon-hat bottle for my 16th birthday. Unfortunately, it wore me then rather than the other way around. The new version is, of course, reformulated. It is the same scent though, as a piece of music written for a philharmonic orchestra but performed on a guitar by a virtuoso like Paco de Lucia. Even then, its complexity and harmony surpasses by millions of light-years most of the modern mainstream and niche offerings alike. And now, 30 years since, I wear it instead of the other way around. Better late than never.

I'm in love with it! AMAZING. Very smoky, mysterious, night time, serious fragrance. Projection is moderate to heavy (I tried this in late summer, but during cold months it will be heavy for sure). Longevity on my skin was off the charts! I sprayed before bed, could smell it in the morning and all day - became a skin scent, but very noticeable - and now, I'm heading to a shower to go to bed again, and I can still smell it close to the skin. This is crazy! Definitely getting a back up for this.

I'm a sucker for 70 fragrances as that's when i first discovered my love for perfumery. I find myself going back and snapping up these classics on the grey market now, and many are ones i sniffed over and over at counters but didn't always buy. I can say this does smell very like the original Guy Laroche version; as soon as i opened this i recognized the characteristic signature of the old one. It's hard to recognize different notes but it's a chypre with aspects of orientals. Sultry, mature, a little sweet but also mossy. There is a tiny bandaid note but that's part of the original vibe and I just love this. It's probably a reformulation but they have done a good job, IMO.

I find J'ai Osé very unique. While it is truly different it's not weird, it surprisingly easy to like. Not annoying in any way. It's like the scent of a medieval witch, and she is brewing something in her cottage deep in the woods. Earthy, woody, smokey, mysterious, natural and mossy. With time it gets more warm and resinous, but still remain that unique character and lasts a very long time on my skin. correspondencepersonal: Yes! Tar! I couldn't pinpoint it, but that is exactly what I smell too. I used to own a tar soap and this is indeed the connection my brain couldn't make. I love that addition to the scent though.

It's very unic but do i like it? Not so much. Indeed it's fire, tar and cigarettes what you smell. Nothing sweet or feminin. I consider it a male perfume and then the males like the Marlboro man would smell. Living the outdoor life. All day on your horse looking after the cattle. Smoking cigarettes and sitting by the fire after work. I love male perfumes to wear myself but this one i will pass. I quit smoking many years ago because i hated the smell of cigarettes around me and on my hands and clothes. So a no for me.

I don't know how this compares to the original Guy Laroche version, but no matter because I'm falling head over heels for this one. A very sensual green oriental that is just gorgeous. Lots of inky moss, smoky and spicy resins, and rich sandalwood. I love it when a blind buy pays off this well. This is wonderful!

I'm wearing this now a several hours and i like it more and more😊. The heavy cigarettes, tar, smokey smell has settled down and it's a nice smokey and warm perfume. Still male but also wearable for women. So i will keep it and enjoy the small bottle i have.

Given all the glowing reviews, I was expecting a lot from this scent. I hate to say it but I was completely underwhelmed. However, it could be the version I bought, as I noticed that there are two versions of this on Fragrantica – J’ai Ose Parfums J’ai Ose for Women (which I got), and J’ai Ose Guy Laroche for women, which appears to be discontinued. Maybe it’s my skin chemistry, but on me – well, meh. It was quite green and sharp when it first went on, then it settled down, and I got a bit of the rose, and then it all disappeared after four hours. I’d dearly love to try the original Guy Laroche one though. UPDATE: Ok, this is obviously one of the scents that I go nose-blind to after a few hours - I mean, I'd put my nose to my wrist and could barely smell anything. But!! All last night, I kept getting lovely wafts of the rose, so I've got to up the staying power - I got a good eight hours out of this.

I ordered and received the 15 ml, but what I received looks nothing like the bottle or the juice. It smells green, citrusy, resinous, and male. I also purchased the other version with the hat and I don't smell a resemblance.

I cannot comment on old bottles. I agree with the reviewer below. A leathery chypre in the vein of Aramis/Azuree. Every time I sniff, it smells bizarre. Thin and flat. A bit like nail polish remover, but green and oily. Phenolic, but not overly so. I think I'm getting this impression from poor discourse between the aldehydes and the IBQ. ...It might be the cold, dry weather effecting my nose. I'll give it time. Edit: I can't find a way to enjoy this perfume. The leather and the aldehydes come together in a disagreeable way. I will stick with Cabochard.

On my skin its alot of oakmoss, sandalwood, ceder, soft pepper and amber. Unisex for sure. If you love wood/amber-mix - this is the one to try. A bit dry and clean as well. Nice, but not me, at all. Earlier this was named Guy Laroche J'ai Osé. På mig får jag en mängd ekmossa, cederträ, mjuk peppar och amber. Definitivt unisex. Om du älskar trä/amber-mixer så testa denna. I never would have found this fragrance to sample, if it weren't for my fragrance "angel" that has been trying to help me make sense of this "signature search" that I've been on, since Covid quarantine began. If you like incense perfumes, you will have to sample this one. This starts with an unusual tar smell which lasts about 5 -10 minutes, then the tar fades into a nice mysterious smokey incense perfume. (Some reviews even referred to a tar/poo type smell, they weren't joking - yes, this is what I am experiencing too). A review earlier mentioned the Spanish guitarist mention, Paco de Lucia, was the reason I ordered this. After listening to some of his music, I couldn't help myself - I really wanted to try this perfume. We'll see - this is just the first few minutes, but so far -- the smokiness definitely has my attention! ---------- This perfume is still feminine with my chemistry, this could possibly be worn by a man, but it is more in the range with some of the 1980's women's perfumes like Knowing by Estee Lauder. There are notes in this that are similar to Femme Joop, but Jai' Ose' has more of a smokey incense smell to it. ----------- This perfume is unusual and is not similar to any other perfumes that I have ever tried or purchased. At first, this strikes me as being in a similar genre to Kenzo's L'Elephant - where it is something that is almost "costume-y"; something that I would have to be in the mood to wear - or specifically going out for the evening to an event where this would be part of a costume. The dry down phase, this moves into more of a low key body mist type perfume. It doesn't project as far as I would have initially thought with the first spray. This is a cozy perfume, it feels like a great night out perfume and would go great with Mexican food and margaritas, Spanish guitars! Ole'! ----------- The incense notes in perfumes are unusual. The only other perfume in my collection that has an incense note - is Passion by Elizabeth Taylor, which does not have a smokey note to it, it is more of a lady's lotion mixed with the incense...the vibe is more "purple". Jai Ose is more of a smokey incense type note, like you are actually experiencing the incense burning near you. This has a mysterious, sexy type vibe. This reminds me of the incense that sometimes burns in a psychic bookstore, it has a more Bohemian Chic type type vibe (hippy) reminiscent of the 1970's when it was originally created.

To me, this edition of J'ai Ose scent is like Aramis for Women. A Leather Chypre scent that is sweet, green, aromatic, old school in a 1980's fashion but very easy to wear. It sits close to the skin & lasts for over 5 hours on me. This is a very lovely fragrance & reminds me of Shalimar & Moshino & Pheremone & Cabochard & Paloma Picasso & are in the same family. Very enjoyable! & While wearing this, I don't smell tobacco but I do smell leather even though it's not listed in the notes. To me this scent can go from day to night quite easily depending on how many sprays you use. And so nice for Fall & Spring seasons. I would call this my entry level Shalimar because it's more sheer than dense. For Winter you'd probably actually need the density of Shalimar/Moshino to smell it & notice its' presence. Yayyyyyy, I am very glad 😊 for this enjoyable fragrance!

Ugh, I love this so much, but so far the potency/sillage is disappointing. I find this very butch-- it beats Bandit and Paloma Picasso in that aspect, but the poor sillage kills it. If this was a powerhouse- watch out- this could be my new fave butch chypre. I get bitter, earth, dirt, smoke, leather, woods and moss. It's amazing. But yet not. :( Totally unisex. Maybe the sillage is my skin or the weather? I tried it on a nice warm spring day. I have no experience with the Guy Laroche, and it sounds like a bottle of that is a true unicorn. I have a 100ml of the Baby coming, found it on ebay new for $16 shipped! I like this a lot, so I'm not dismissing it. I'll try in diff temperatures and prob buy a few backups because you need to use a LOT-- but it's worth it.

On my skin: this smells like the love child of Aqua Velva Musk (a wonderfully complex drugstore classic) and Magie Noire, in that order as it progresses. Performs more like an EDT than an EDP. Projection and sillage are low-moderate, which is just fine for this type of scent. Given the reasonable price, this is worth a blind buy. Recommended if you're into the "old-school" Orientals that have either been reformulated to be unisex by today's standards (as this version has been), or just simply ARE unisex by today's standards in their unaltered form.

This is low-key. Even at first spray. Some EDT’s hit harder out-of-the gate (Ie, Fidji), and I’m left wondering what the EDT for this is like if the EDP is this way. But ohhhhh, it has a smokiness that I wish for and almost never find. Sometimes the value of the less expensive ones can almost be eaten up with the need for repeated sprays, but it’s sure lovely. If only it was more enormous and more long-lasting. Prob safe for small groups and crowded situations.

This has a distinct rubbery-earthy band-aid smell to it. Be warned. I still love it. lol... It's just the bitter wood/green I think. I have the EDP that I reviewed below, but I also found myself the J'ai Ose brand EDT in the 100ml. I don't get any difference between them, and since I found the EDP to have average/weak sillage/potency, the EDT is about equal.

This is soooo smoky and in a good way. Aldehydic a bit, but much more smoky and mysterious. If you want to smell a bit like a fire, and like the mood of cold weather, you will like this. I bought this one,as pictured, and I assume it's a knock off but I still think it is very good. Worth an honorable mention anyway.
