Paul Smith Men

There are very few fragrances that truly impress me, Paul Smith Men is therefore somewhat unique in that it does. That it was Paul Smith’s first attempt in this market is even more daunting and he has never managed to follow it up. Usually an aftershave will bore me after only a few minutes as I find most of them banal, overstated and unsophisticated, often composed as though their true purpose was to hide the scent of sweat rather than be a mark of one’s style and character. The Paul Smith Men is different. It has something summer morning like about it, milky and cool not as in the behavioural meaning of the word, but as in the temperature, it does not try and impose its existence on the world it is subtle, no notes overwhelms any of the others. Olfactory wise it is very different from almost all aftershaves, the Paul Smith Men lacks the clinical fakeness of a laboratory that hangs like the stench of a hangover after most male perfumes it is natural, as though it has taken its ingredients from elsewhere. Comparing it to Dior Fahrenheit as some reviewers have done here is a slur to the sheer finesse Nathalie Lorson and Alain Astori has put into its creation, the Paul Smith Men is of quite a different breed, it does not belong among common sports shampoos from which the Dior Fahrenheit takes its inspiration.

This smells very similar to Old Spice Playmaker Antiperspirant. Though this cologne is a little fruitier, less powdery. I love the scent. I get the fruits, the flowers, the musk, the oakmoss. It's all there and mixed incredibly well. Slightly synthetic, but if you're buying this I don't think you're a snob who will mind. It's beautiful and worth the money. It's a clean, masculine, slightly powdery scent that remains nice throughout the day. The first couple times I used this, I would smell it for a few minutes and then it would disappear almost completely. Now, after wearing it for at least half a dozen times, it last for 8 hours and then it starts to get that, stale, need to take a shower feel. During my work day, I have to complete a lot of strenuous tasks that get me hot enough to sweat so maybe that's why it last longer for me. I wish it could be a little lighter but still as potent. As is, it's a little cakey feeling, but for the price I think this is a hidden gem.

I absolutely love Paul Smith Men. Hands down my favourite summer fragrance. I tend not to like citrus and thankfully I don't get any from this. It's like sipping green iced tea while sitting in a bed of cool damp violet leaves under the shade of an enormous tree. There might be some ginger in the tea, maybe a bit of mint? Maybe there's something wrong with my nose, but the listed notes and other people's descriptions don't resonate with my personal experience of this fragrance. It's cool and fresh and green and aquatic without being citrusy or harsh. From the start it doesn't project much at all, but lasts over 12 hours on my skin. This will be a staple in my collection for a long time to come.

I’m not sure what some people are smelling, because to me this is very unique, I haven’t smelt a summer scent like it. Yes it doesn’t last long but I have a small 30ml bottle to top myself up with. It is so fresh and clean, reminds me of sipping cocktails in the Caribbean! I definitely get the basil and lavender, but there’s something else not listed that I just can’t put my finger on. All in all, worth every penny because it is very cheap.

I got this for a steal a tester bottle with box from Fragrance X for only $20.00 wow . Very fresh green grassy aromatic type frag that just makes me want the summer to be here again! Has a classy vibe to it also. Modern ,manly you can really pick up the geranium,lavender and lastly vetiver notes. I get about 5 hours but for the price though I'm not complaining. I hear they now have an Intense version ! Would buy it again!

I have had a bottle of this scent for over 15 years and find it to be a great spring / summer scent. Not to strong but I do find it does last five to six hours on me in the summer. Fresh, clean citrus with some brisk vetiver in the dry down. Considering the price online this is a complete winner. Enjoy!

Just a simple greenish scent. But while sitting at my desk working and something very beautiful and relaxing kept whiffing by, and then it dawned on me it was this Paul Smith. It definitely smells better in the air than on my skin. Love it!!

A very pleasant, refreshing and safe summer scent. It does remind me of Dior Fahrenheit, but i prefer Paul Smith Men. The Fig and Violet leaves combo is great. A must have in your summer frags rotation.

OMG how I love it ;/ a pitty that is very hard to find in Brazil. Can I substitue this one by Farenheit EDT? Edit: After testing the Dior, Yes, I can =D

I use it every Monday when I need something to lift me up and courage me to face all week until the weekend arrives again.

green is the word apple, grassy, its fresh long lasting its a day one nice in the summer for me very cooling

Fantastic gentleman's fragrance.Very underrated.One of my personal favourites along with Tuscany by Aramis.

An underrated fragrance in my opinion.So relaxing with green & fougere notes.A top quality product.

The best summer fragrance ever created!

Smells great ,but preforms miserably, must be reformulated, great opening, although very synthetic, but soon as the heavy alcohol smell fades away, you get a freshness explosion, of citruses and basil like a fresh and cold green juice, it’s very much the vibe of the Y2K era, back then this frag was a banger, i got it recently for $20 just for the nostalgia factor, which didn’t disappoint, fragrances, can really be like a Time Machine, especially when you haven’t smelled one in couple decades, and get to rediscover it again. What does disappoint, is the performance, great opening but then set into skin within the hour, You can detect the flowery middle notes if you smell really hard, the musky base notes are faded in the background . This is something to wear only at summer time at daytime and hot/warm weather, I’ll recommend to carry a bottle in the gym bag and spare away throughout the day , if’s so inoffensive and pleasant (and weak ) it won’t bother anyone ...

This is a great little scent, fresh and clean and a nice mint. I've seen quite a few people complain about mint not being "done well", saying it may come across as toothpasty or synthetic. If you ask me about the mint in this I'll tell you not to worry, it's great. It is so cool, fresh and simple and not synthetic-like. I could smell it on me but unfortunately just does not seem to last for long or project far. As I write this the top three voted notes are violet leaf at one, mint at two while bergamot comes in third. That is about all I can make out, those three and they make such a great trio. Not expensive and well within reach for many just starting out and it's best for warmer weather.

It's a great fragrance, Fresh, Clean, Green, Nostalgic and UPLIFTING. It opens up with like fresh citrusy and green notes in the background then dry down is green musky woody. The Violet Leaf is dominant in this perfume. This is a Green unique scent and a fragrance that gets you in a good mood ! It smells so good and very pleasant and perfect for the spring and summer. I really enjoy it and I like Paul Smith EDT for Men. Thumbs Up. Rating : 8 / 10

though being top notes, citrus notes last very long and clear until the base, therefore make the scent fresh and slightly spicy. A gentle perfume for middle-aged gentlemen or those who are seeking mature politeness. The projection is just moderate but it's good since you only feel this on others when having a conversation with them. This would be a perfect present for your father.

It smells exactly the same as when it was first launched. It is such a great value fragrance, projects well, and has decent longevity. I get a very green blast, mostly bergamot and lime, but the best note is the violet. I don't get the Fahrenheit vibe at all, it's too green, if I were to say it reminded me of anything at all, the closest would be Horizon buy Guy Laroche.

Classic grassy, lemony, fresh and uplifting fragrance that smells absolutely nothing like Fahrenheit! I detect a little green tea as well. Loved wearing this in the spring and summer until I detected this on the most odious human being I have ever had the misfortune to meet. At least he had good taste in fragrance!

Cheap and Cheery. This is my go-to fragrance on mornings when I'm feeling a little dusty. This scent somehow always lifts my mood. The minty violet accord feels fresh but never thin nor synthetic. Sillage is moderate and quite linear. Simplicity in a bottle at very reasonable prices. Win-win.

Very green and fresh (one of the greenest scents) It's a good fresh clean daytime scent, and this manages to be a bit different! I absolutely LOVE the violet note here. It's linear but a lovely EDT and one the the best greens in the world!

Violet and vetiver stick out mostly. a clean veitver not dirty. Very fresh in the same realms as Guerlain Vetiver. Light basil and woods give it the stamina to project about 6 hours with arms length sillage. Overall I am satisfied.

An underrated fragrance in my opinion. This is really gorgeous. Beautiful green, fresh and a lovely violet note. A bit like CK Man but this is MUCH nicer. Longevity and silage fine. One of the best green scents out there.

Green, floral and fresh. Not sophisticated, very casual. I got some déja-vu feelings of men's perfumes and I don't know which note / combination of notes contributes to this.

Solid fresh fragrance- the basil is very apparent. Well blended. Nothing to call home about, but a good value for the price and Nathalie usually does a good job

Very good. I like it so much i force it a little, and i am wearing this in autumn. This is fresh summer morning in a bottle. Recommend for all ages.

I definately get a Dior fahrenheit vibe from this one, but it is greener than fahrenheit. The performance on my skin was a little under average.

Just got this for the 2nd time. A fresh and green juice with a touch of woods. Moderate performance. A great inexpensive green - lovely

Simple, fresh and fun! Great for spring, summer...everyday use, casual or office. A goody, very uplifting!

This smells good and soft. A smooth fresh for summer. It stays good.

Herby and green at first like nettle tea, then some citric notes, and then a gentle yet fresh warmth. This follows a fairly typical modern men's perfume accord - a familiar journey which picks up on successful "after shave" splashes, though with a subtle musk and vanilla warmth in the dry down. It's quite a mild scent, both in terms of fragrance impact and strength. And though it echoes classic male colognes, it is quite light and feminine, with white florals. It walks a fine line between projecting as sophisticated and projecting as an everyday sporty cologne, and manages well to combine those two aspects. The violet and vanilla and white floral notes make this too light and feminine for my taste. I like it, but it's not something I can see myself wearing often. And I feel its not one to layer with other scents as it doesn't have enough power or character to stand out.

The problem with reading other users reviews before you write yours is that they can, possibly, affect your review. I purchased this because of the fig note. I was looking to try a fig based scent and this was fragrance was suggested. I really appreciate the green note and find the scent pleasing. Until a few moments ago I thought it was a fig note I was smelling but others have suggested that may not be so. Regardless, it is a pleasing fragrance and good for daytime wear during warm weather. It is incredible weak, calling this a skin scent is kind, it practically disappears from the skin within moments. If you put it on just prior to leaving your home I doubt it will be present by the time you reach your destination.

Ice wine, fresh cut grass, violet leaf and white musks. The short lived ice wine note is the best part in this simple composition. There's Nothing sweet or tangy here, just green leaf alcohols and musks for a green grassy scent. It's of course a matter of taste how this makes you feel, but for me this "as is", doesn't make a full composition. It's good for adding a green musky note for layering though. I am surprised this is the great designer's namesake scent. I enjoy tremendously "London", and I really like his latest "Sunshine" summer flankers much more than this. Performance wise this is a skin scent for 3 hours and only thanks to the musky base.

A fougere like a ghost. While this is a nice inoffensive fragrance, it really does not last very long. The mix of herbs sits nicely on the skin, but not after a harsh lemony opening that really does smell like surface cleaner, likely from some of the bitterness of geranium. Not a standout for me, but I can understand its appeal.

Freshly cut grass opening, in a bad way. Gets better though as it evolves into cucumber and aqua, spring and summer freshie. Performance and projection could be better, therefore a 3 out of 5 (instead of 4).

I made a classic mistake of just reading what the fragrance has in it and went and bought it. BIG MISTAKE.! This was not what I was expecting. Its pretty strong and I wouldn't reccomend it for daily use. I have to get rid of this bottle somehow so I am having to use it in the gym where no-one would know me. If you are looking for something STRONG and DIFFERENT this is definitely the one for you. Don't be fooled by the description of the smell, its just lemony. You might as well squeeze lemon all over you. 3 years on and the bottle is still 3/4 still there :(

The opening of this is so sharp and unpleasant and it doesn't improve. I don't get any of the nice sandalwood or violet leaf and would not have known they were fragrance notes.I get predominantly oakmoss and basil, a biting geranium and a lot of vetiver. I normally like vetiver a lot, but not with so much oakmoss. This is very earthy. If you like that, then you'll have no problem with this, it's just not my kind of thing. I was hoping it would be warmer, with more sandalwood and orange.

I generally love grassy green fragrances. Paul Smith Men is green and fresh, and I wanted to like it. I think it is more of my personal chemistry, but it has a very sharp leafy cilantro scent to my nose and gives me headache. I don't have responses to cilantros and love it on my tacos. It is somehow very pungent here to prevent me to give Paul Smith Men more love.

This smells like a cheap shampoo. Not only that, but its boring. Very boring. But smell is subjective so make up your own mind.

Not that great citrus with somewhat of a melon vibe. Not worth your time or money.

This cologne is nothing like water.

Wore for the first time today and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite spring fragrances. My first impression was wow this is the grassy scent I've been looking for... and the green/grassy note smells amazingly natural for such a "cheapie" I got for $18. I purchased this baby last winter and put it away until the spring. I did not even open the box until today... I wanted to smell it for the first time on a nice sunny spring day. Well, that day has come and so far on first impression I'm very pleased with Paul Smith. I truly enjoy green notes in fragrances, especially grassy notes this time of year and this did not disappoint! In fact, it has thus far exceeded my expectations. This reminds me of my days playing college and semi-pro baseball in the outfield smelling the grass on my uniform after diving for a line drive. It also reminds me of going to Fenway Park in Boston on opening day smelling the fresh green grass. This Paul Smith is really bringing back some nice memories.. However, I don't get the comparison to Fahrenheit other than a similar violet note. This is much greener than Fahrenheit, brighter and more spring-like. Don't get me wrong, I love Fahrenheit, and it's also in my spring rotation. They're just different fragrances and for in my case for different occasions. Fahrenheit obviously is much more masculine and for men primarily IMO. As for the performance of Paul Smith, I'm still testing and will report back on the outcome. All in all, if you guys/gals like grassy-green fragrances, you're going to love this I believe.

At first glance, and sniff, there is nothing special about Paul Smith. It isn't very strong, it is not ground-breaking nor the possessor of exotic notes. This is not a panty-dropper or niche. It is a warm weather only fragrance to boot. However, Paul Smith is an excellent fragrance in spite of all those so-called "deficiencies". Simple notes create a citrus-melon opening with a green mid and dry-down with an ample dose of violet aand some musk. Think a fresh mown lawn with the scent of violet, a slight tinge of mint and pine. It is fresh, wonderful and an excellent interpretation of what a warm weaher fragrance can be, besides an oceanside creation. You can apply as much as you want without fear of over-applying, in fact you will need to. If you put a lot on it will last the entire day leaving you smelling fresh of the outdoors and soapy. Yes, the comparisons to fahrenheit are valid, this would be its strippped down counterpart, no leather and desiel here. I think of this as a sharper more herbal take on mugler cologne. Always brings me back to Memorial day weekend, being a younger man and all of the wonderful summer memories I made while wearing this. A staple in my fragrance that can be had for incredibly low prices.

I see the Fahrenheit and Green Valley connection. Paul Smith Men is the closest you’ll get to Green Valley—about 55% of the way there—but that’s not saying much since nothing else even tries. It opens with a similar mastic-driven green vibe, briefly touched by basil and tomato leaf. The basil lingers, morphing into a petrol-like violet, reminiscent of the ‘88 Dior but softer. The hefty cardamom note in this can be distracting—it quickly dominates if you focus on it. Over time, violet and peppery violet leaf take over more than in Green Valley, but I don’t mind. Longevity isn’t lacking; I got ten hours from a few sprays. What’s odd is that this was clearly meant to be a budget Green Valley, yet it skips easy-to-use notes like vanilla and blackcurrant. Ironically, that makes Paul Smith Men a more bitter, literal take on "green." It won’t replace the Creed, but it’s impossible not to think of Green Valley while wearing it.

I just got a new tester bottle for only 20 bucks from an on-line shop and I was so happy to spray it on - cautiously on the back of my hand - immediately. And oh boy, the scent was wonderful: fresh, citric, green - Just as I remembered it 20 years ago, when I'd use it on a daily basis back at the time when it was out for the first time, in the late 90's, I think. The scent threw me back in time and place, to mornings when I would leave home, starting my days, off to work, with this fresh energizing feeling of this wonderful citric green scent by Paul Smith. I'm so happy I've found this lost treasure. I think it could be good for women as well since it is not strong or overwhelming. It is great for all through the year seasons, it really is, and it is marvelous during the summer and hot weather. I just love this juice!

I'm discovering a love-hate relationship with violet leaf. There's a tipping point right in the middle between sweet and dry compositions, and in the dry compositions violet leaf is a huge turn off, where is in those on the sweet side of the ledger - from just over the line (Azzaro Chrome United) to the moderately sweet (Mont Blanc Emblem) to the decidedly sweet (YSL L'Homme) I find it quite pleasant. I suppose that means I prefer it as more of a complementary note to sweeter components. When it is itself one of the sweeter primary notes in the blend, as it is here, I actually find it too much of an aquatic / vegetable note and not to my taste at all.
