Bread + Roses

i never wear gourmands but i'm such a rose girl, so i was interested in getting my nose on this as soon as i read the name. oh i'm in love with bread + roses: it lived up to every expectation! i agree with everyone saying that the opening is super yeasty. it dies down pretty fast into this cozy, toast-like scent that's balanced really well with a sweet, fresh rose. i get a little more rose than the gourmand notes for most of it. i don't get much cacao (which is a note that i was unsure about) or orange other than some extra sweetness, and the nutmeg just boosts the warm & cozy factor. it's hard to review this one objectively because the easiest way to describe it is just... me! my girlfriend smelled this on me and told me "it smells like you!" not in a skin scent way, more in a "this is your exact vibe as a person encapsulated in a scent" way. this may be replacing my current signature scent, at least for the fall and winter. my reviews are usually more concrete, but i can only think abstract for this one. it feels like adding extra milk and sugar to your morning tea and opening the nice jam for your toast. like simple comforts and relishing the little things.

FYI, I hate rose forward fragrances. I find them to be boring, vintage, and overdone. Enter Pearfat Bread + Roses... Wow. I love all stages of this perfume. The opening has this unique bread scent. I never knew what bread as a note would smell like and I still am perplexed if this is how it smells. I think I'll go and open my bag of Orowheat and take a big whiff. I digress. If this is what bread smells like I'm here for it. I'm so glad this didn't start out with rose being dominant. The bread note is not like freshly baked bread aroma right out the oven. It smells like the bread they give you at restaurants as an appetizer. Already sliced and cold. This stage lingers around for quite a bit and I felt like it would be a linear fragrance, but no. All of a sudden, I get wafts of the most juiciest jammiest rose. This is when it hit me. I actually DO like rose, but a specific kind. Not freshly cut realistic rose. I like the fruity tart kind. I don't know what exactly makes this one jammy as I don't see any berries listed. Maybe the sweet orange? I don't know, but this makes my eyes roll back. Now I'm obsessed. My gateway to rose scents. I'm on the hunt for more.

This is coming from a certified rose hater, this is a very very lovely rose scent! The opening of this has a very sweetly candied rose aroma which I was worried about but it quickly turns into a freshly green and stemmy aromatic rose. You also get a hint of that orange but it’s a bitter orange. Then you get the bread, and wow is it a lovely note! It’s like a rye bread, it’s dry, it’s earthy, it’s doughy and it’s warm. Mixed with those green roses it’s such an odd combination that really works to smell like a loaf of bread with roses baked into it and there’s virtually no sweetness here, but again it works. Now the dry down has some of that cocoa mixed in and this is where you do get some hints of sweetness as it offers a very powdery chocolate dusting above the loaf of rose bread. Such a lovely, lovely scent profile that I’d love to upgrade to a full bottle.

I bought the sampler set plus samples of Up North, and pushed Bread + Roses for last because it sounded just meh to me and I had recently gone on a massive rose kick and was just over roses. Well, I can confidently say Up North and Bread + Roses were my 2 favorites of the bunch. The opening of this one made me say out loud, “OHHH! THIS IS NICE!” The rose is a very green rose, the bread is freshly baked and it’s just unlike anything I’ve ever smelled. It’s sweet from the cacao, a little spicy from the nutmeg, I can detect the labdanum (a little bit leathery) only in the background, and it kind of just holds everything else together. I get moderate projection, others nearby can smell me, but it’s not massive (none of Pearfat’s offerings are). This is such a fun and different perfume!

wow, Pearfat perfumes are quite an experience and I mean that in a good way. Testing out the discovery set and loving most of the scents but even the ones I don't love, I still enjoy for the uniqueness factor. This is one of my favorites so far. I don't like extremely strong rose scented perfumes, but this is not overly strong in the rose because it's melded so beautifully with the bread and cacao notes. I would put this a a mildly gourmand category...it's not super sweet or cloying but the "food" notes are definitely present. This scent is warm and cozy. If you are looking for prominent rose, you won't find it here in my opinion. The rose is only a background note on my skin.

This opens as straight toasted bread and dried roses. The two notes contrast each other a lot at first and almost feel like they’re competing, but I weirdly love it. It genuinely gives the vibe of being a nun in a monastery or something. The dry down is genuinely gorgeous! The toast burns off almost completely and you’re left with this intimate creamy rose scent that stays super close to the skin. I’ve always liked rose but this feels really different from most rose perfumes. It’s soft, warm and weirdly comforting. Aphrodite approves, I’m certain.

Opens very “bready” indeed! Quite salty on my skin, which I LOVE, but fades after a few minutes. Dries down more rose dominant with a fruity accord I realized was the orange after looking at the notes. Results are a fresh clean fruity sweet rose scent, though that may change with different chemistries. I do wish the bread/salty opening lasted longer, it’s sooo good! I very much enjoy the rosy dry down even though I’m getting much less of a bread vibe from it. This is 100% a “can’t stop sniffing myself” scent. As addictive as carbs. Love it!

Fresh, funky toasted sourdough topped with orange jelly and candied roses. The rose accord in this puts Lush's Rose Jam to shame! Wearing this perfume feels like stepping into a tiny local cafe that knows your order by heart and sprinkles extra cinnamon and cocoa on the top of your lattes. Describing it as cozy does not do this scent justice, few smells have ever made me actively want to curl up in a blanket to take a nap and I think this one takes the cake.

YUM this nails the sweetness of fresh yeast. polarizing scent; my friends hate it but i keep returning to it. very bready and sweet; jammy rose greets you but warm cocoa yeast takes over quickly. debating getting a full bottle because I don’t usually like gourmands and it’s impossible to feel clean while wearing this; kind of feels like that film of flour and sweat that covers you after baking for hours. love it

This is my favorite fragrance I have tried as of yet. It smells like a midwestern kitchen, warm, a bit humid, jammy, all of the good feels. Imagine you are at you grandmothers home, she has fresh roses on the table & is making you pound cake. That is what it smells like. To me, this fragrance smells like womanhood. A true love letter to all of the unspoken labor we do. I am on my second bottle.

I really wasn't a gourmand fan until I came across Pearfat's. This one really grew on me. It starts off with the rich and sweet smell of fresh warm bread. I feel like the rose is kind of an undertone for me but don't get me wrong the rose is STRONG and very present. There is a strong warm nuttiness on the dry down and I get sweet orange hints now and then. Overall this is a beautiful blend.

I love this scent and I’m thrilled to discover Pearfat . It starts off as rose banana bread, a lovely warm fragrance that reminds me of baking bread in a cozy kitchen. It don’t get any of the other notes mentioned, but that’s ok the rosy bread is delightful. After several hours the fragrance is still detectable, which is better than many of the other modern perfumes I’ve purchased.

I love how warm and sensual Pearfat’s products are, and this is no exception. The sweet bread accord is fabulous — I was afraid it would smell like beer, but it doesn’t — and the rose provides the perfect floral lift. This is an everyday scent for me.

opens with YEAST, not in an unpleasant way - kind of like rising bread or beer foam. settles into a cozy warm carby flower - like if lush’s rose jam was savory instead of sweet. my kinda gourmand.

LOVED this more than I thought I would. First spritz is immediately a bright yeasty bread scent, with an orange backdrop, and as it dries onto my skin it becomes a warm spiced rose. Yum.

This smells like the holidays incarnate. A warm and decadent mixture of warm fresh bread, red wine soaked jammy rose, and dry nutmeg and cocoa. Warmth and good tidings in a bottle. Then as it slowly dries down on my skin the rose begins to take a rose water like property as the booziness dissipates. The booze being replaced with this lovely sweet orange water soak for the bread. All the while, the cocoa and nutmeg keep it dry and powdery. It’s so deliciously beautiful that I keep reaching beck for it again and again on my arm. This is 100% a winter or fall fragrance, it is very strong on my arm and I can see this scent profile being cloying in the heat. This is one of those fragrances I really like the smell of but don’t think I’ll ever buy a bottle. I have never had the real urge to wear gourmand fragrances, and I don’t think this one will change my mind but I absolutely love my sample. If you are looking for an interesting and lovely rose gourmand to add to your collection: this one is for you. At least for now though, I’ll enjoy this early holiday celebration.

A single lethargic red rose just barely kept alive by golden summer sun. I know this is meant for cooler weather but Bread + Roses is what a hot summer afternoon smells and feels like. It's the smell of groceries in a paper bag that were left out a little too long and the smell settled at the lowest point. It smells like having coffee on my porch on a 90 degree Fahrenheit morning. It smells like the mourning doves cooing at 3pm. It smells like the cicadas rattling their existence into the air: I'm here, you don't have a choice. This used to smell like obligation (a glass of orange juice, stale toast, and a cigarette for breakfast before work)(you don't have a choice) but now I see it's the lack thereof (i'm here). At first I wasn't sure it was something I would wear a lot but I've almost gone through the whole bottle. For a less poetic description, it really does smell like hot rye bread, orange peels (after they've been used for simmer pots), and damp rose petals.

update: i found the bread! it’s extremely present! i think it was just a consequence of not having an atomizer on the sample or my nose not being super developed yet. i have a baby pear now and i can smell the bread! the roses too, just later on!! old review: this one ended up surprising me! i suspect other people’s chemistry reacts differently based on the votes, but on me this is a really fresh, green rose, especially for the first couple hours, with a little bit of spice behind it (which announces itself a little more after some wear). i don’t get much bread, which is unfortunate but not the end of the world; it’s still a perfectly lovely scent. i plan on getting to know her a little better this spring and will update my review (and this goes for all my reviews tbh) if anything changes, but i’m thinking of eventually passing this sample along to my sister because she loooves rose

Warm, yeasty, jammy. The opener was a slightly salty, rich bakery aroma, but it very quickly was swept up into a strong, fruity rose. On my skin, the rose rapidly became much more prominent than the bread, which was a little disappointing, since I love gourmands and this ended up being more of a fresh, warm floral. As is the usual with Pearfat, the heart was fruity without being sugary, and it had a rich, full body behind the rose, with hints of cacao. As someone who normally doesn't like roses because they're typically too sweet and simple, I really like the green, hearty rose in this one, and I can see myself wearing it on a chilly day. If you like roses, you will love this. I wish there was more of the bubbly, toasty bread note that I'm craving here, though that seems to just be my skin chemistry.

First impressions: This is not a sweet gourmand- which I really like!* For me the yeast comes out really strong, with the florals and spice taking a background role. I specifically get yeast, rather than bread, which also makes me think of beer and brewing. The floral is almost wistful, like walking past a window that has a bouquet in it. Beer and bread both need heat, and I see this scent bringing some warm comfort in cooler weather. *I've long avoided gourmands, fearful from my first introduction when the mall was filled with sugary cake frosting scents. This is my first foray, and that they can be more than artificial desserts was a pleasant surprise

I like to wear unique and oddball scents but Bread + Roses, while fun and interesting, was too much of a novelty scent to warrant a full bottle purchase. On me this smelled very literal, roses upfront and bread in the background. I will say, the rose was complex and rich, not flimsy or cheap, and while there was certainly some yeast, the bread was a full loaf kind of smell with wheat and toasty notes included. If you like more savory or off beat gourmands give it a try.

wow - have been wanting to try this forever - to me (or on me?) it's a straightforward, photorealistic tea scent . like a chai variant maybe, definitely a bit milky and definitely on the sweeter side. i detect a slight rose underneath that... pleasant, not sure if i want to wear it .. definitely feels like getting a reasonably indulgent sweet treat, like a jammed toast with tea ... i want to play with this more , gourmand for a gourmand hater

I don't want to buy it as a full bottle, but if someone gave it me I would wear it. The description it says it's a baguette, but I think it's a rose flavored concha. It has a sweet flavor to it. The man reason why I'm not buying it is because the bread smell fades in the first 30 minutes leaving just a rose smell. Sorry but I have a dozen rose fragrances in my collection. I would get the discovery set to try this. I'm happy to experience it.

This is whole wheat bread with rose jam slathered on. There’s an almost masculine note at the base of it that really deepens the fragrance as a whole - maybe the labdanum? This is mature, dewy rose - not quite grandma but definitely knows her way around a record player. I LOVE bread scents, but this is not the kind of bread I wish to smell like. Well done all the same!

there is a slight yeasty smell I get at first but it's also a lot creamier than I expected? almost like a rose ice cream sold at a bakery. as it dried down the yeast started to transform. I didn't get mold from it, more of a musty antique store smell that I personally loved.

i reaaally like this. i genuinely can’t fathom how people are getting mold from this. it’s like freshly baked sourdough cooling off next to a vase of roses in the spring. savory, floral, interesting. yeah i am yeasty. a yeasty man with a big heart

Similar to Panettone (from Milano Fragranze) with a stronger floral aspect. But the fruity-bready heart is similar - something really out of left field and on the nose. A breath of fresh air.

The rose and the orange are prominent on my skin and I get a little bit of burned bread.

This was one of the samples I received in the Pearfat discovery set. It's not for me but not bad. It's very rose-forward on the dry-down and I'm just not a fan of rose scents. That being said, it is a dewy rose scent that I way prefer to powdery roses. It smells like roses in a fresh bouquet and not that dried, haunting rose that lots of rose fragrances have. There is a strong, photorealistic bread smell that is prevalent on paper and dominates in the first few minutes on skin, but it's almost gone after about 5-10 minutes of drying down - it is fun to smell for the time that it's there, though. It's a pretty, flirty, relatively intimate, not old-lady smelling rosy fragrance and you are a rose girlie (or dude), you'll probably really enjoy it - I'm just not. If you're intrigued by the bread note, I probably would not recommend blind buying this one because it does not stay for long on skin (at least on mine).

I really wanted to love this one. The salty bread and orange zest notes are strongest at the first spritz and evolve so quickly that I felt genuinely surprised by the experience. On the dry down, the chocolate and rose really come through. There's a consistent yeast element that persists through all its phases, and this accord seems to be the most sensitive to bodily fluctuations. When I first tried it, the yeast and rose combo was repulsive, landing somewhere between moth balls and a moldy basement. A few weeks later, I gave it another whirl and had a very different experience. On second try, the scent settled into something a little more antique and classic--imagine your grandmother's bathroom, stocked with decorative pink soaps and potpourri. An interesting journey, at turns adventurous and nostalgic, but ultimately, not for me.

Definitely smells like a sweet bread to me, think like an Italian easter bread or even a concha. Some reviews say otherwise but the rose was not that strong to me. It was certainly there but on my skin translated more to just a general sweetness. I don't know how to feel, I think it smells good but not exactly great, or at least I am not sure if it is for me. Due to the bread note I think it smells a bit yeasty and therefore I kind of just feel generally smelly while wearing it as opposed to smelling nice. Still something warm and comforting about the entire thing. I don't think I'd ever wear this out, perhaps just in the comfort of my own home while baking when I already smell like flour LOL.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that florals don’t agree with me, or rather, my skin. A paper test reveals the yeasty, crusty bread and the blooming rose in equal measure, but on me, it’s just bread. I smelled like a big loaf of sourdough. I’d only wear this if I wanted to smell like bread, which to be fair, I absolutely did when I went to go catch up with a friend over a plate of pasta and wine, so there was more bread-appropriate scenarios than one might initially think. It’s also surprisingly long-lasting for one of Pearfat’s; I woke up to traces of warm, slightly salty bread on my hair. At least according to my girlfriend, it’s a sexy kind of bread scent. I think she’s biased.

this doesn't feel like a gourmand imo. on me, the scent is overwhelmingly rose and sweet orange, but in a greener, earthier way than you would expect—like a rose bush that's been drenched in a rainstorm. it feels like a scent for transitional weather, when it's just chilly enough for a jacket and a little cloudy and damp. i wish the bread note and savory/spice accords were more pronounced on my skin (i get just the slightest hint of sour/yeastiness under the rose but can't detect the nutmeg or cacao). i probably wouldn't reach for it, but overall, this is a really pleasant fresh and fruity rose frag.

Smells delectable on clothes (like a combination of Mochiglow Asian Bakery and a fruity rose body spray) and lasts a very long time. Fun and unique gourmand! Unfortunately, on skin I get more of the yeasty note, and it quickly dries down to a lingering skin scent that reminds me of dried spit :( The rose smells like a candied jam, which is very synthetic but not too cloying, but I feel like its tartness contributed to that "spitty" scent. I guess my skin chemistry doesn't work well with this one, so it'll stay pretty on my sweaters for now.

Yeast and mold and bitter rose candy. Something very troubling to me, in body and spirit, as if a witch replaced my flesh with bread and left me to drown in warm vase of old flower water, bloating and disintegrating, slimy stems and green leaves floating past my face. After several hours, it sort of bakes I suppose, and it does start to smell more gourmand, like cacao nib croissants and a single dried rose, but I can't get past the initial tang of fairy tale death. This is a unique and intentional fragrance, but it's not for me.

I was hoping the bread/rose ratio would be different. I'm getting so much rose, and less of the panettone sweetness I was hoping for. I'm looking for a pastry gourmand so I'm very glad I didn't fully invest in this one. I'll try it a few more times, but I think I like it so much more in concept than on my own skin. Socialist song inspired frag that donates a portion of profits? Hell yes.

Sour slightly plasticky rose. Sour makes sense given the yeast from bread, it gives me that over fermented loaf feel more than sourdough. I like citrus, but the yeast overwhelms and lingers whereas citrus is light and usually fades after opening. Not very enjoyable for me, it has the weird synthetic base a lot of indies seem to have. I guess I’m just sensitive to that.

i HATE roses but.. thought this was decent so that is a testament to how good it must be! the bread in this is soooo gorgeous. it unfortunately dries down to just roses, but it's shockingly tolerable for someone who can't stand them lmao. overall rating: 🩷🩷🩷🖤🖤 3/5

I got the sample pack. I liked this one the least, literally recoiled when I smelled it but I like a challenge so I sprayed it on my knee to let it develop. Later on, drove to Burlington Coat Factory. It's a hot-ish day, wearing shorts, on my period. I squat down to go digging in the perfume racks. Get a big whiff and think, well, that's not the worst it's ever smelled. Kinda interesting actually. Yeah, this one's not for me. I get an image of Audrey Hepburn singing moon river outside her hot NY apartment but I'm too close to her and I can smell her and she smells yeasty.

Oh boy...this scent is a mixture of floral and yeasty notes which dries down to this musky slightly sweet aroma that I prefer to the initial spray. I am personally aversive to yeast-heavy scent and this reminds me a lot of story of your life by etat libre d'orange...for some reason I can't do it. I think you would like this if you like slightly sour yeasty yet floral combinations, and I can see how this would be nostalgic for many. Not my thing but the point is well made.

My husband got me the set of like 10. A sample set. Ugh! I hate them all two I have to throw out cause I just can’t! So gross I feel like he played a cruel joke on me. But the bread and roses wasn’t awful yet for me not wearable. Just not good. Heck a better rose perfume would be any of the Idols from Lancom or B&BW Rose body spray. This one made me feel like I was wearing a rotting bouquet of roses with a hint of strong sourdough bread.

Oh naur. no thanks. I sprayed it and was brutally whacked upside the head with a cast iron pan full of hot sourdough bread (unfortunately I don't mean that in a good way). I was hoping for a sweet brioche type of bread and instead I got dinner rolls + stale beer. The other notes are alright underneath but that bread hits so hard and so savory at first I couldn't help but gag :(

I tried but I had to scrub it off. I let it sit until the dry down to really give this a chance but it's just gross to me. It smells like yeasty dough that's halfway through proofing when you accidentally shatter an old expired bottle of rosewater while trying to pull something out of the back of your cabinet. I swear the main note in this is yeast, it's not nice fresh baked bread, it's yeast and raw flour reacting in a warm, messy kitchen

I have literally never hated a perfume more than I hate this. It's like a hot stale dark beer and old smashed oxidized rose petals blended with rye bread in a Vitamix. It smells wet and mushy in the worst way.
