Battaniye

Goodness I absolutely love this and wouldn't have found it had I not been stalking some cool person's shelf who left a cool review of another fragrance. Always stalk your fellow Fragranticers! Anyway, Battaniye is the hippie headshoppy patchouli of my dreams-- deeply earthy and musky, dark, but NOT.STICKY.SWEET. like so many other patchoulis. It's absolutely tenacious and performs very well, but never feels heavy or oppressive to me. I haven't smelled a patchouli like this before: it's not the Reminiscence, Profumum, Psychedelique, etc. style of patch to me at all. Battaniye actually reminds me a bit of--now bear with me-- the smell of a Spencers or Hot Topic store (the person who said record shop is on to something; my personal reference is those early aughts stores) , but less side swoop bangs and shy, pensive lip biting. This is sophisticated, earthy, inky-black, slightly incensey. Definitely reads a bit goth to me. There's a gentle sweetness here to temper the dirt-like patchouli, likely from the amber/labdanum, but it's (thank the heavens) **not vanillac**. I do get the ash note, which comes across as dry & dusty and almost like a clean smoke; I think this gives Battaniye a bit of buoyancy and keeps it from feeling sticky. It's FB worthy for me. So bummed this brand doesn't seem to be available in the US anymore!

This smells, to me, exactly like a campfire as soon as you put it on. Eventually that calms down, though, and you're left with a beautiful earthy/woody scent without all the smokiness. I spritzed it on a card when I first got it and was iffy, but as soon as I put it on I fell in love; I got it as a tester through a perfume subscription box, and immediately bought more once I smelled it on me. Beautiful and comforting scent; it's buttery/creamy, syrupy, deep, rich, smooth, warm/hot, slightly spicy, delicious. There's also a little bit of sweetness in there, like some sort of delectable and expensive candy or dessert; as another reviewer said, it's like honey. Gorgeous. Just be aware that a little goes quite a long way; it's very strong, and lasts quite a long time!

When I put this on it immediately places me back in Record & Tape Traders, a music store that also sold posters and other dorm room paraphernalia, that I would go in sometimes in my teenage years. I wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self "this is what patchouli smells like". I went years and years knowing that patchouli is somehow associated with hippies and not knowing what it was. And I even went to some jam band shows. Fragrance-wise, I'd say it's not that far from the classic Reminiscence Patchouli. After an hour or so, the basement notes wear away and a very appealing amber starts showing through.

Spritzed it on a card earlier this week and was sure it would be entirely too strong for me. One small spritz tonight on my neck and wrist and I found complete joy. Wow. Absolute perfection. A surprise for sure. Incense and smoke with a bit of spicy sweetness. Not floral. Not powdery, just spices. It's blended really well. It feels warm and cozy and not overwhelming. It's a comforting scent. I could call it similar it to ELDO Rien Intense Incense, it has a similar feel. This has a bit more spice. Love it.

This has given me a new appreciation of patchouli. Wow! Sampled from a 1 ml and could still smell it the next day on my jacket, in my car, and on the blanket of my couch, the latter of which really drove home the name ("Blanket")-- got the sense of an old cozy wool. Still going through the other samples but impatient to be done so I can wear this again. Reminds me of a less schizophrenic A*Men by Mugler (one of my first favorite fragrances).

Outstanding amber-patchouli scent. I loved it in first sniff. You can easly detect high usage of raw materiels like amber and patchouli. I never smelled anything like this. Amber and patchouli combo is just awesome. I am very happy to be able to get a full bottle. thank you omer for this great collection!

One of the prettiest patch fragrances around. Yes, there is herbal patchouli and nothing powdery about this fragrance. It is rich and intense. But, the labdanum is right there tempering the herbalness of the patch and making it sweet and a little creamy. Almost honeyed but with an edge.

You're ripping out some invasive honeysuckle bushes from your garden, digging up their roots from out of the cool, damp earth. Taking a break, you pat the soil from your leather work gloves and you wipe your brow. Battaniye by Pekji.

A niche ambery Patchouli. Intense dirty patch sweetened a little by amber and a hint of licorice. Melded with lanolin blankets and earth. Gorgeous

Great showcase for Pekji's poky, ultra-quirky, almost abrasive way with classic scent profiles. You may think you know what you're getting with 'patchouli amber', but this does it differently - in a defiantly nearly-dirty, almost-scratchy, super-organic, very retro fashion. "Safe Inside" says the info card in my sample box; the name is Turkish for 'blanket', and that's what you're getting: a thick, rough, nubbly, handwoven, almost-itchy layer of warmth and protection which is still a little bit stinky-reeky, of old smoke and nearly-mouldy storage in wooden chests and the tang of real animal wool. Maybe even with a tang of burned-over mosquito coils too. That sour, super-earthy patchouli comes on STRONG - a proper old-school hippie aura, not compromising or prettying things up for an easier ride. (In this respect: reminded me more of PG's similarly muscular Coze than Borneo 1834's more Frenchified take on the truffly, fungal forest-floor effect; also doesn't smell much like NOT Perfumes' amazing Ashka and Svaha, but shares their bonkers, balls-out spirit of adventure. ) This genuinely smells like an antique head shop piled high with old textiles gathered on backpacking epics around the world. Personally I like this sort of approach way more than any airbrushed, syrupy, headache-inducing 'clean modern' amber - but if your personal idea of a comfort zone is sterile five-star luxury, rather than an off-the-beaten-track, slightly grubby but historic guesthouse, then this might almost be repellent. It has true character - meaning it's individual and distinctive enough to alienate some. Rough and rugged indeed - but it knows what it is, and knows what it's doing, and the effect is both deliberate and clever. Pekji is different, and that's the way that art scents are meant to be - to show some courage and imagination. Bravo, even if it's not an easy wear. Open your mind, man (or lady), and learn to love it.

My first try of the Turkish house of Pekji is Battaniye, a rich patchouli/amber blend, as it is aptly self-described, midway between a patchouli-dominant fragrance and a medium-bodied amber, with earthy- and (as the Luckyscent description notes) a bit of textile-type qualities to it. There’s a spicy/smoky/earthy aspect, with additional notes of vetiver, soot, and musk. It’s fairly dark, and high-performing. Unsurprisingly, fans of both patchouli and amber should be extremely well-served by it. I lean toward amber much more than patchouli, myself, and resins in this fragrance (which include labdanum) are a little smoky while not being animalic yet are still provocative, a good spot to be in. Battaniye is extrait concentration and, like most of the house, seemingly, is priced at $165 for 50ml. Five of the house’s scents, including Battaniye, are sold via Luckyscent (among other boutiques), and are also available in a discovery set of 2ml spray samples. Overall, this a fun first impression of this house, and I look forward to trying the others in the discovery set. 7 out of 10

“Battaniye” truly feels like a warm fragrance; the ambery sweetness and cozy wool-like warmth blend together beautifully. Yet, with its strong patchouli, earthy, and smoky undertones, it goes beyond being just a comforting wrap; it’s the kind of warmth that invites you into dreamscapes; whimsical, yet ever so slightly unsettling. You are in a mountain chalet. The air has turned sharply cold, and it’s finally time to pull out that heavy blanket from the wardrobe (the kind that almost crushes you under its weight). Faint traces of mothballs linger as you take it outside to air, the sun wavering between presence and absence, a breeze brushing against your face. Earthy, almost chocolaty blend. Candied patchouli and something like amber, mixed with rich, damp soil. Musky, smokey, mild.

From the atomizer it was interesting so I decided to spray this once on my neck and another on my wrist. Not that interesting but let's wait and see. Next 1-2 hours I was having a dilemma if it projects or not. It reminded me of some resinous oils. Can't recall which. Wife said Ok but she wasn't impressed either. Anway at 4th hour I went to bed and I started to get the scent strongly but now it got very sweet. Hard to fall asleep. Another fragrance I once owned came to my mind. 'Felanilla' by Pierre Guillaume. And I don't need that again in 2022-2023. Nice effort but on my skin, it is too sweet with amber and honeysuckle dominating the rest of the notes. Winter only.

Earthy dirty smoky with a touch of sweetness. You really have to be a patchouli fan to fully appreciate this fragrance as it is relentless. I have a dabber from luckyscent and being honest it's super aggressively beast mode. This would be hard to wear in today's society with everybody being PC. I am happy to sample this and I do like it enough to most likely finish it but that will be it.

Opulent and dark on the skin with a liqueur patchouli of earth and licorice. With a medicinal thread of barbershop that over time becomes a dense, dense, talc, powdery, muffled and mentholated amber cloud. Old-style, mature. Sometimes welcoming other times intrusive.

This scent is a visit to your weird aunt's house--the one you almost never see, for reasons you're too young to know. she doesn't really have any toys but she sends you into a very rarely used room to look for something to play with, and you search half-heartedly, but you just can't get past that weird, weird smell. It's definitely dirty, but not like old food or anything scary--just maybe some old paint-by-number kits, a dying plant or two... there's a junk drawer that looks promising at first, but no... the markers are all dried up, and the playing cards have coffee stains... I tried to give this one a chance, but I just don't like where it took me.

I'm not trying to be rude. This makes me gag every time I smell it. It actually makes my stomach churn. It's harsh, medicinal and I don't get syrupy amber at all. It is unbearable for me, and holy smokes does this thing last and project.

Couldn’t wait to get this off. The ash, the soil, the wool, quite frankly it’s ridiculous. The amber and patchouli smell like those oils you get at the health section of a dollar shop.

Battaniye, Pekji Parfums, 2018 Perfumer: Omer Ipekci "Battaniye" translates to 'Blanket' in Turkish. I can't think of a more apt name for this, for when you spray it, it envelops you. It isn't as warm and fuzzy as, say, Bengal Rouge. There is no sweetness in Battaniye. It is a Patchouli show: earthy, soot-like, chocolaty, dense and grimy. The cocooning effect here is almost paternal in nature, unlike a maternal warmth emanating from sweet Myrrh in something like Bengale Rouge. With Labdanum, Vetiver and Soil tincture as the only ensemble, there is no cozy sweetness in here, as if the protective spirit of this blanket does not want you to forget the cruelty and the harsh realities of the world outside. It's not exactly the scent of petrichor either. Battaniye's Patchouli is more reticent and has a desiccated feeling to it. It does not tingle and excite, it's more interested in quietening and lulling us, eerily beckoning us to return to where we all came from. This is the scent of Earth, with no redeeming flowers or intriguing greens to avail it. It is some times a deep Brown, but often pitch Black. Even in its austerity, Battaniye satiates my senses better than fragrances teeming with expensive materials. So many of us are so often ornate with superfluous perfume on our bodies, in hopes to appear larger or wiser or more appealing than who we really are.. when most of the times, all we need is a bit of grounding in who we truly are. The Earth doesn't rely on the beauty of a flower to appreciate itself. It knows its might. The flower is lucky to bloom on it. Battaniye is an elegy to Earth, and is just as much a reminder of how little it takes for a human being, insofar as he remains true to himself, to be beautiful. ~ bigbusynose of Instagram

Expertly crafted, modern yet archaic. Starts off with a very camphorous patchouli and labdanum, with the amber and honeysuckle keeping things from getting too sour from the addition of dark vetiver. After a while the soil tincture and ash kicks in. I visited a graveyard in Constantinople when I was there on vacation many years back. It was near the Blue Mosque in the old city section. It was wintertime in December and I remember the earth/soil smelling very wet and ancient. I just adore the smell of old soil. This fragrance reminds me of that experience. During the drydown, all moisture has been evaporated, and its like sun-baked cowboy dirt from the Old West and saddle leather. As a parfum extrait, expect the longevity to be phenomenal. I'm getting around 20 hours.

Earthy ashy sweet ambered patchouli. Definitely a dark, but sweet fragrance. A little leathery rubbery as well which is the ash, very unique. Smells a little of licorice too, so if you like this note this may be for you. Reminds me of the bahia shops with the tie die t shirts oriental wooden trinkets and jewelry and incense sticks. Glorious, earthy patchouli! It manages to capture patchouli's honeyed and chocolatey facets without actually using maltol, a huge dose of vanillin, etc. to make the connections. Instead, the patchouli here is married to notes that more subtly seem to bring out those facets. Sweet, powerful, herbal, and dirty but it never feels treacly or overdone. With judicious application, it blooms nicely and doesn't overtake.

Syrupy amber. Sweet syrupy amber with few chunks of patchouli is all i got from this. It's like a milky syrup amber. Meh. Btw, it reminds me of "Alambarb" by Laboratorio Olfattivo. Edit (29th April) After few minutes in i get the styrax, the gunpowder, and the lapdanum musk. The cooldown is sweet medicinal effect, kind of cute and sort of addictive somehow!

A dirty, castoreum-tinged patchouli with a tarry leather note. I'd say the most "beastly" of the scent lives in the opening salvo, which quickly dissipates and gives way to a dark, ambery patchouli scent. The leathery note has some of the burnt-rubber quality of Le Labo's Patchouli, but much more subtle and quiet.

Sorry for the non-review remark. For those of you who are curious, Battaniye means "Blanket" in Turkish. From the notes and K1's excellent review below, it sounds like the perfect "blanket-like" perfume. Pretty much the whole line up is on my test list at this point. :)

How can you not love this masterpiece? Yes initially smells funky but within 15 minutes there is this comforting and unique Turkish bathhouse aroma that takes you on a flying carpet higher than high over the highest mountains...for hours and hours ❤️

Perfectly judged patchouli amber with great projection and sillage. Patchouli and vetiver have a definite presence, the floral notes amplify their floral qualities. Amber stays fused with patchouli in drydown. Excellent.
