Ruh

Updating my review about one year after first smelling this... I think I wasn't able to smell Ruh properly in January of 2021, when I first purchased it as a sample. I think my perfume-smelling was impeded by having caught Covid-19 in March of 2020, and I think it took over a year for my sense of smell to recover. My sense of smell tends to be quite a bit better than most people's generally, and so I could still smell quite a lot post-Covid, but I noticed in 2020 and early 2021, that perfumes didn't seem to last very long on me. Well, I think they actually did, but I just couldn't discern them after a few hours. After 6 months of not wearing perfume from July-December in 2021, and a year and 9 months after having caught Covid-19, my sense of smell is back to normal, and Ruh is really amazing! Everything I wanted to be more - actually is more. I just couldn't smell it before. So, if you want a cardamom/coffee/rose perfume with a tiny bit of cumin trailing along, nothing offensive - look no further! This is the bomb! I ordered a full bottle and have no regrets, except that I didn't know how amazing this was a lot sooner. This is more cardamom/coffee than rose, by the way. The cardamom and coffee float upon floating rose petals, which are very red, but also rather transparent. I think the review by @Pilikins is spot-on, except I can't smell saffron, but no bother!

Ruh is most probably the crowdpleaser of the whole line. A very solid take on the oriental-rose theme. It opens with a decadent but not overly opulent jammy rose accord immediately joined by the most realistic and vivid green cardamom note I've experienced in a while. There's a transparent quality to this opening that preserves the fragrance from taking the *heavy* route. Saffron is perfectly merged to rose providing a dark yellow / orange hue while a roasted coffee accord together with oud play baritonal notes. The fragrance revolves around a benzoin / amber bone structure with woody notes thickening the base. Immediately likable, smooth and effortless in its beauty. A piece of work that reeks of perfection. Rating: 8.5/10

The idea of coffee and even more cardamom, whiffs of gentle rose. Hours later, oud and wood. Sampled with heavy sprays several times, not a very strong perfume in my experience. Wish it had more projection and strength than it does. Lasts about 6 hours. A nice idea, but not FBW for me personally. Every time I try it, I wish it was MORE. More strength, more rose, more scent, just more.

In this order to my nose: rose, jasmine, saffron, sandalwood, cardamon, patchouli, coffee; sweet and rich. Lovely.

Klasik gül-oud ve gül-sandal yaklaşımlarından farklılaşmaya çalışan Ruh, bunu tam anlamı ile başaramıyor. Ancak gül temasına "kadifemsi" bir hava katarak ayrı bir başarı yakalamış. Klasikleri kullanamayanlar için bir alternatif. Zaten gül ve our gibi baskın iki karakteri "başka" birşeye çevirmek kolay değil. Ancak yukardaki listede "alt notalar" olarak listelenenlerin nerdeyse tamamı kaybolmuş. Kahve zayıf, ben kahve koklayamadım. Koklayamadım çünkü hep kaba ve orada olduğunu ısrarla vurgulayan örnekleri ile karşılaştım. Ama bu orada olmadigi anlamına gelmiyor. Hissediyorsunuz ve bu çok şık olmuş. Zaten safran ile gül benim bir arada katlanamadigim şeyler olduğu için safran aramadım. O da kendini göstermek için sıçramadı. Gül dedim sadece ve geçtim. Bu bence ortadoğulu turistlerin tercihi olur. Bunu olumsuz anlamda söylemiyorum çünkü Araplar gül kokusuna hak ettiği değeri veriyor. Biz ise halen Bu muhteşem kokuyu "hacı yağı " kategorisine hapsediyoruz. Türkiye de gül kokusunun maruz kaldığı ıdeolojik yıpranma ve yeme-içme kültürümüzün etkilerinden kurtulması zor. Ancak dediğim gibi ilk 2-3 saat bende yarattığı kadife hissi çok güzel. Ben gül kokusunu severim ve bu parfümü kullanırım. Ancak soğuk havalarda bunu bir tütsü baskın parfüm ile güçlendiririm (mesela Armani Encens Satin) sıcak gunlerim gecelerinde ise Cartier Declaration ile gül baskın havasını yumusatirım..:-) Sonbahar da ise bol bol sıkıp ağaçlı bir yolda yürürüm. Ruh, Pekji markasının benim burnumda ki 2. En güzel parfümü...

Such a beautiful composition! A noble rose, oud, and coffee take the lead here. Normally, I’m the kind of person who runs the other way when I see a coffee note; but this time, I found myself pausing for a moment; it felt almost timeless... The coffee is always a risky note; for those who truly love the scent of coffee, the magic disappears the moment you smell an unconvincing imitation. Yet here, it’s perfectly blended. It reminds me of turkish coffee infused with cardamom; rich, aromatic, and soul-warming. There’s a faint warmness and a slight soapy nuance, but both stay in the background. The metallic edge from saffron gives the fragrance a certain gravitas; an “old soul” kind of weight. I’m starting to believe this house has a signature DNA: mysterious, dark, and slightly gloomy; I feel that same aura here too. It carries the classic rose-oud-patchouli triad that so many niche houses favor, yet somehow it rises above the cliché; that’s impressive. As it develops, the coffee fades, leaving the stage to rose, saffron, and oud; or maybe my nose just chases them more. In my mind, “Ruh” haunts a gothic library; a sorrowful spirit moving through corridors of shadow and shelves steeped in silence, lined with forbidden grimoires... Sampling Pekji Ruh, a spicy, floral, semi-animalic, mix featuring a diverse coalition of notes, including rose, oud, cardamom, and saffron. There’s not too much of any one of these four key notes, but rather, a fairly balanced combination, so those that find any particular note overbearing should not fear this blend. Still, it’s provocative and unique enough, respectively, that it demands some attention while not smelling like anything else I’m aware of. It’s not as much of an instant winner as Odoon, but I quote like it, and it’s a little easier to wear than the amber-patchouli Battaniye, I’d say, even if not quite as easygoing as the marine-ish Eaumer. Like the rest of the line, Ruh is priced at $165 for 50ml, in extrait concentration, and is sold in the US at boutiques like Luckyscent (where I bought the discovery set of five) and others, and it performs well. 7 out of 10

This punched me in the face with a big WOW, when it reached my nose after being sprayed on the scent stick. I dried the atomiser off on my wrist and oh gosh this is so exciting. My first real Middle-Eastern scent! It transcends the mind to an exotic place that is warm, calm but a little untidy inside (I see a small room with lots of old books and the low, warm sun shining through a small window, no other light sources) while it's bustling with life outside. I Don't know how else to put it. So smooth, rich dark and cozy. I do not know when I would wear it because I don't have the personality to rock that kind of fragrance, but I surely will treasure this sample and enjoy it at home (also, I keep moaning everytime I smell my wrist, that's a good sign - but not so good in public!). Amazing.

Having tried the entirety of the two Pekji collections, Ruh is one of the only two where my idea of the perfume’s concept diverges entirely from that of the perfumer. To me, Ruh is too generic to be the soul of anything, as it’s the standard Middle Eastern rose and oud with a sprinkle of saffron. What sets it apart, however, is the mastery of the blend. Ömer İpekçi is not a mere perfumer, but a true magician. He uses notes that I either absolutely abhor or cannot stand, and somehow transforms them into actual notes, beautiful and balanced. Rose and oud fall into the latter category — I do love their smell most of the time, but they give me a headache. Unfortunately the rose here still does that, but the oud is so light that it brings no discomfort. I still prefer the very green rose opening over the rose-oud dry down, though. In my opinion, Ruh along with Eaumer are the safe buys of the house, they have easy mass appeal without foregoing the quality, but Pekji’s best works are the experimental, wholly unique ones that you cannot find elsewhere, to the point I’d say Battaniye or Zeybek would be more apt for a “soul” fragrance.

I don't enjoy oud. Oud, rose, and wood. Not to my taste.

I am editing this after 2 years of not wearing. All that maceration has created a more harmonious blend. Really delicious. If you love rose- try it but let it sit for ages. I blind bought this, on the basis that it was described by reviewers as an oriental rose. But the rose is not so prominent. However this is lovely spicy oud that is not overpowering. The main top notes that I get are saffron, cardamom and coffee- yum and savoury. There is some note that is sharp and a bit headachy there too but I can’t identify it. Luckily it goes away fairly soon. Then I get a strong spicy accord which unfortunately has a sweaty undertone - I suspect you cumin! However again, not too overwhelming however it is long lasting - right through to the base! In the mid notes it settles down a bit and I get a bit more of the rose, although it is pretty understated. I was expecting a huge rose like in Oud satin mood but it is never that defined. However the mid notes are lovely and well balanced. My favourite part is the base however with the smooth and powerful patchouli and sandalwood which just feels like a deep warm fur (faux of course) blanket - slightly wild and deeply comforting. Great for winter. Longevity is 8+ hours. Sillage is above average and gender is completely unisex. This perfume smells very natural so probably best to keep in a dark cool place. I get what Arabian Knight says about it being a raw perfume. The texture reminds me a bit of those perfumes that you create in perfume workshops - not especially well blended in the top notes but the whole composition comes together much more harmoniously in the mid and base sections.

This one is just lovely. I don't have another floral quite like it and so I bought the full bottle as soon as I'd spent most of a day wearing the sample. One reviewer mentioned that there's something raw and unrefined about this-- which is precisely why I like it. This fragrance has something of an impish, daring charm. It's that Moroccan boy you dated once who was always taking you on wild adventures by day, and then wrapping you in a loving and passionate embrace by night. The saffron is lovely, and is recognizable as such in the opening, though it's a much smoother, softer saffron than others that sometimes verge on plastic. There's a soft cardamom and amber too, and eventually a lovely jasmine. It's just enough-- sometimes jasmine becomes cloying and unwelcome but this does not. They all continue to work together in a lovely and exotic harmony that is intoxicating, but bracing and enlivening rather than somniferous. This is a true oriental masterpiece.

*constant wrist sniff alert* I'm so pleasantly surprised by Ruh. It has a beautiful balanced rosey opening. The cardamom and saffron go so nice with the rose, and the cardamom is not like any other cardamom accord I've smelled before. It's assertive, yet still restrained and cooperative with the other notes. Also, the rose doesn't smell synthetic. Jasmine and patchouli are noticeable... I just can't pick up any coffee on my skin. There's also a sweetness that I can't pin point - it's slightly vanillic, so could be coming from the amber accord. Summary: soft, sweet, but still assertive due to a spicy zing of saffron and cardamom. This is sure to fetch a few compliments. Slightly feminine but within the unisex realm.

It has been ages since I tested "Ruh" -Pekji has only recently been added to the Fragratica database- but what I gathered from the 2 hours I wore it on my skin (and it was the only scent from this line I would even try wearing), it was a thick, jammy rose and cardamom, with a musky, sweet base. It struck me as being quite raw and unrefined, there was nothing delicate about the way it smelled, despite the 'pretty' sounding ingredients. The texture was stodgy and the layers planked on top of one another, not especially well blended at all. It dissolved into a rather unremarkable rose scent after 30 minutes, nothing special.

If this is how Omer Ipekci's office smells, I'm moving in! This is an amazing scent. I couldn't inhale fast enough. Wore it for days. Each whiff is spice nirvana, warm, flush with ruddy rose. Ruh is meant to recreate the atmosphere of a Turkish souk, where exotic coffees and rose attars reign. The coffee is like a secret ingredient that adds significant warmth, while staying in the background to let the other notes shine. The cardamon and saffron are exquisite. Amber adds a golden glow, and there's a soft powdery trace that is a great accent. Soft sillage, tenacious longevity. Colorful, different and gorgeous!

The opening is amazing. Rosy, spicy, a bit indolic, a bit dirty. I don’t often refer to scents as ”sexy” but the initial part of this truely is. I could swear there was cumin but maybe it’s the oud paired with jasmine giving that impression. The dry-down is rather soft, a jammy, sweet/spicy rose. Not as unique as the opening but very enjoyable. A real beauty all in all, I’m a bit in love with this!

Has the Pekji DNA, a slight dark, leathery undertone, and this is heavyyy on the cardamom and coffee. I'm not getting that many florals as the notes say although Jasmine is noticable, rose not so much. Second testing: Getting a nice strong jasmine. Yumm!

I smell rich tobacco. I don’t care what anyone says. Obviously bedded by cardamom and cumin, with some floral accents. Really smooth blend. Powerful synthesis, and made of quality ingredients. I dig this one and need a large decant.
