It has some mildest echoes of Opus 1870, but that is just a fleeting impression that doesn't last for more than a moment. The underlying warmly irritating mate, some dash of fine oakmoss and a pale creamy rose that has passed it's best, give a look of patina to a suede-bound book, not a dusty one, but fresh out of print in a slender mildly nervous hand of a wannabe cheeky aristocrat (played by Daniel Day-Lewis 25-or-more-years ago), while he wants to be taken seriously in his patchouly drenched midnight blue velvet robe... It claims the obvious: cyphre or bust. And then, unexpectedly, this one turns so suave and seductive it would knock you out of your shoes, grabs a hold of you in his arms and right then you wouldn't even notice it happened before you felt his warm breath on your neck...but by then it is already too late: you are almost hooked like a naive little fish, while at the same time you really so-do-hope there is no escape. Is he the one you were dreaming of all this time? Or is it all just an illusion? Great scent to wear while reading a book in a sun-drenched room after a heavy storm with a cup of tea waiting on the side...full of promise and relief. First impression felt like Q80's bellow+++++

We have a complicated history, but I’ve come around again to loving BC. I first tried it at a Saks counter, and obsessed over the smell the rest of the day. It was gifted to me a year later, and when I first sprayed it ... grape soda!? Nothing like my first experience. ‘Fume-head conspiracies of reformulations and batch differences circled my brain. I half-heartedly wore it a few more times. Then one day I decided to go all in, and sprayed it heavily - a pool of liquid on each wrist and either side of my clavicle. Suddenly I’m transported back to ... that beautiful fragrance I experienced the first day! A chewy, resinous, labdanum-rich base with a swirl of raspberry sweetening and balancing the composition, providing a similar structure to one of those rich oud oils with juicy blackberry-like sweet top notes. The moral - BC needs a concentrated blast. Dispersed from too far away, the base disappears and it’s a sweetly confusing mess, but done right, extraordinary and so very addictive.

There is a very pronounced Labdanum note from the very start in this fragrance and the moss note on the other hand is actually less obvious. The Pink Pepper is unexpectedly spicy like Black Pepper and enveloping without the usual fruity berry rosy vibe to it. In the heart, the airy May Rose accompanied with a mossy Mate note made the scent feel extremely dry and cool. The Patchouli here is clean and earthy with a slightly bitter and moss like feel to it. Very interesting fragrance and totally not following the trend of most of the recently launched fragrances. Although the silliage is not great, it does have very good longevity. Love it!

It starts with salty patchouli note. Some people on Russian fragrantica page are referring to it as 'pickle' note or 'salad' note but in fact it is very interesting and makes the composition unisex (not even close to Dzonkha's pickle note:))). Then patchouli transforms and when the rose is present it gets sweeter. Very posh perfume. The longevity is great. There were some comparisons here to Voleur de Roses - the patchouli-rose combination is absolutely differently executed in L'Artisan's perfume - it is more like a cellar with matured red wine. Belgravia Chypre is more bubbly and refined.

The most elegant fragrance I've ever sniffed? Belgravia Chypre is the first bottle I bought from Penhaligon's and boy, this is some real high class juice. The opening smells like sparklings, almost like champagne, seriously good one, then it develops into a slightly powdery rose while the moss keeps it earthy and helps balance the sweetness from raspberry and rose - expertly blended and very mature!! I don't perceive this is a perfume but rather an aroma at a very high-end tea party, and is best worn by a woman in her late 30s or early 40s. Very well done!

This one never should have been discontinued. Just got it yesterday (blind buy) and fell in love with not only the scent, but also with the performance. Sprayed it just before work and was still smelling it ten hours later when I got home. Even had a couple of people comment on it at work, saying how nice it smelled. This bottle will be cherished until the very last drop, which I hope is no time soon. Oh, how I do love my Penhaligon's fragrances!

Slightly sweet Powdery chypre! Bulgarian, & Turkish roses domination, labdanum, opoponax, leather, & natural sweet gum. More leathery than chypre & more doses of illusionist woods. I got extremely infatuated from the first spray as i RARELY get that infatuation ever! That blend is just over perfected as i could sniff it none #@$% STOP.

Belgravia Chypre is indeed the best Penhaligons since the brand had been acquired by Puig. A masterfully blended and beautiful combination of roses and patchouli. Reminds me of Cartier Declaration d'un Soir with better quality components and amped up earthiness of patchouli. Excellent!

One of my all time favorite. So sad that it's already discontinued. A beautiful and smooth chaos of pink pepper, oakmoss, patchouli and rose. Raspberry and pink pepper hit you first, then patchouli, oakmoss and rose slowly surface.

Softer Portrait of a Lady sister & reasonably priced. Sadly discontinued. Love this for warmer weather. Elegant, rich, and aristocratic smell. Bought full bottle.

My 1st Penhaligon. It's a beauty and sensational smell in a bottle. Lasts all day. I can smell it on myself all day long. Good for hot or cold weather.

I'm sipping my regular mid-morning mate whilst sniffing it, therefore the same grassy dusty mate note comes through really beautifully right now being married with dry and clean patchouli. But first and foremost it is a rose chypre. And expensive one, I'd say it smells a bit like money. Old money. Rose is there to start with, spiced up with pink pepper, freshened with some savoury patch (totally get the pickle note as said below), and deepened by moss, and this rose will stay until the leathery base. My mental image leads to khaki/raspberry patterned brocade upholstery in posh renessance-style interiour. The scent is not old-fashioned per se, but replays by-gone pre-WW2 era of luxury. Belgravia chypre is my 2nd favourite in Penhaligon's London collection after Kensington Amber (that I find much easier to wear). This one is touch out of my comfort zone. Yes its elegant and masterful. Even patch that I'm working on so hard to love, is done well. Rose is green yet velvety, slightly dusty and savoury. However, it turns quite powdery in dry-down that adds a lot of elegance to the scent, but is not my personal taste. It also makes the scent come across cooler than its incense base would suggest and slightly oily. Its unisex, for patch and moss loving ladies, but would work even nicer on men imo. 35+ though. Daytime, fall/spring. I keep testing it to decide if I'll keep the FB. Sadly as a former Londoner, I get no mental images of Belgravia, which would suit younger trees and greenery, crispness and brightness. This one is just a bit mature. There is absolutely no doubt BC is excellent work and a very elegant, signature-worthy creation. Why Penhaligon's decided to discontinue this is beyond me. It would have grown its own following for sure. EDIT: I get the Malle POTL association, but BC is more savoury and mossy.

What a gorgeous perfume. My child is 8 and announced, "that smells like toilet cleaner" when I sprayed this this morning and it oddly did have an Ecover kind of whiff, that thankfully dissipated after a minute. And upon further application (without said child) I didn't notice it so much. Perhaps a mix of citrus and the pine aspect of frankincense, I don't know. Well, I can smell much frankincense in this. That piney, rich olibanum and the dry down of a raspberry rose on a bed of incense and patchouli is rather lovely. addictive. The raspberry reminds me of Absolutely Blooming. there is a clean woody rose note that reminds me of Robe Noire and Black Perfecto. But that said, there is an old school fruity chypre vibe beneath. A lovely inky, almost leathery oakmoss occasionally comes to the fore. What an interesting blend. BC is indeed a fruity chypre of the rosey kind. a lovely, balanced blend that is an utter delight to wear. This and Peoneve are my favourites from this house.

This is an airy and cold tree-like scent similar to that of cedar. When I say tree-like I do not mean woody scent but a light and soft cedar-kind smell. As mentioned by another reviewer, this is probably created by the composition of oak moss and rose, along with patchouli for cleaness while bergamot for freshness and the cold airy hue. After it dried down, I could smell a hint of raspberry though it is neglectable. It would be a nice spring scent. This limited collection of London-inspired fragrances among which my favourite is Kensington Amber all perform well albeit I dislike Marylebone Wood. Belgravia Chypre is not a scent that I will love at first sniff but will fall in love with it with time.

I like this even though it’s not typical of the scents I wear. That said, it is wearable for people who like this genre: powdery rose chypre. The composition is realistic, natural. I’m not picking up the raspberry note, but maybe that note is projecting more on other people. The patchouli and rose are on the sweet side, but not in a cloying way. I think this is perfectly unisex, and for this brand, performance is better than others in their line up. A solid like from me, though it’s outside my wheelhouse.

It’s same DNA as POAL and heavier on Patchouli in comparison. The dark incense of POAL is replaced by a resinous note. I love it and this one does perform above average and smells sophisticated. Unisex and great for evening wear. Shukran Habibi!

I sprayed my sample of this for the first time since I got it right after it came out lo these many (3+) years ago, and no, it's not gotten any better. Scanning down the reviews from the last year, it would seem a lot of people have been doing this: checking it again after waiting for it to get better. I will say it's different than it was earlier. The top notes are still horrific; I don't know how anyone gets away from the counter without quickly spraying something else to cover it up. (This didn't happen to me; I bought my samples off some thoughtful eBay seller.) But if you can stand the first 10 minutes or so, and are willing to wait for the patchouli, rose and oakmoss to beat off the raspberry and pink pepper (and gosh, who thought they were a good idea, especially raspberry; did someone think it was girlie or something), Belgravia Chypre is an ok fragrance. Naaah, it may not even be that. It's an odd fragrance that's trying so hard to be something, hip or chic or mysterious or something, and failing to do so. Penhaligon's had spent some money making it, so like so many of the other scents they make, they gave it an upper crust name to hide the fact that it's just odd. There are so many better fragrances around, and most of them at reasonable prices. Sure they're selling them online for less now, but even $99 isn't reasonable if you aren't jumping up and down and gushing about how great it is. And it seems few of us are.

Creation of ‘neutral’ or ‘unisex’ perfumes unfortunately results in some fragrances that fall into awkward no-(wo)man’s land in which the formula is lost in a weird mix of sweetness or floral noise and Penhaligon’s Belgravia Chypre is no exception.... On my skin, the opening smells a little of those ‘pheromone sprays’ with a hint of animal litter tray but thankfully it dissipates quickly... and ages into a sweet mustiness that could not in any way be masculine because it reminds me of ‘that old woman smell’. I’ll wash this off and go back to Penhaligon’s wonderful Douro.

It's a strong fragrance that is suitable for evening occasions. There is elegance and class in this one, but it might not be acceptable to everybody. While every element of this fragrance is well-blended, but the opening is just too strong in my opinion. It dries down beautifully, powdery and soft after a while. I have this for a while now and what i do is mixing it with a light sparkling cologne or EDT to soften the strong burst of the first spray. I enjoy this fragrance more this way as i still get the beautiful dry down in the end.

Oh no, Belgravia Chypre is so bad in my opinion, it smells like an off putting floral scent.

Thanks to my dear friend "juliette has a gun", I was able to smell this perfume, that otherwise I couldn't get to sniff. and what a perfume! Chypre fans should not miss this one by all means and it's one of the rare fragrances that is truly unisex. It starts with a strong chypre, peppery scent. I know oakmoss and patchouli are in the base notes, but they are so strong that from the first moment I can clearly name them. a little lime added sourness to the perfume. I can summarize my later thoughts on this perfume in three words: Earthy,patchouli, sour. It's definitely a high-class fume. Yet I should alarm that chypre notes are so strong that may leave you feel dizzy or even nauseous. No need to mention the longevity. Update: After almost 8 hours, I can still sniff it there and surprisingly all I can smell now, is raspberry! I love the dry down.

I like it! Pretty classic smelling, though not a super oakmoss-forward scent, it's more there in the background. I would almost hesitate to even call it a chypre at first but once you make it to the drydown you can see where they're coming from with the name. Coworker asked if I had baby powder on interestingly - powdery isn't really the way I'd have described this but apparently that's how it comes off to some. Edit: Also had two more people make comments. Upon entering the room, one said "It smells like incense in here" and the other said "It smells good in here! Like one of those wall plugin things" lol. This was from across my pretty large office. I was pretty surprised since on skin this didn't seem like it had major projection or anything to me.

I remember 2 years ago when it was released and I was in my amber phase i smelled it and fell in love. Now that its available in decent price I bought a bottle 3 years later. I think my my preference has changed slightly. its still a fantastic and VERY long lasting fragrance, but that extreme sweetness which i associate with Mate is going strong and i cannot smell anything else. I am happy i got it and its discontinued i think. I will use it occasionally though, mostly just a single spray on top of some other perfume I like. I wouldn't call it modern. But I will definitely wear it at black tie event. Always check the profile of person I say to see what sort of perfumes the person likes to get where one is coming from for any particular review.

If you like dark, thorny roses with heavy patchouli, oakmoss, and a touch of berry sweet-tartness, Belgravia Chypre is widely regarded as a hidden gem. If you dislike earthy or retro chypre structures, it may feel a bit too heavy or masculine for your taste.

Opens very fruity and dries down to an earthy scent. The fruitiness fades quickly and wish it lasted longer. A nice modern chypre

At first I could smell beef stew! After some time it’s main note was patchouli.

Reminds me of ysl tuxedo but better. Color impression - red
