Ink

I only have a sample bottle of this one but I did buy Frankincense (which isn’t listed in the database here) but the two are quite similar. Lyn Harris seems fond of notes like Angelica, Elemi, Papyrus and Galbanum and Ink definitely has her recognizable signature of dusty, woody yet watery naturalness with a soft verdant tang. Hard to put that sort of style in words. I believe she uses alot of naturals from Robertet as was the case with Miller Harris. If they say Byredo is for young people who don’t like things to smell like perfume, than Perfumer H is for a more quality-discerning, perhaps slightly older version of this person who doesn’t like to draw attention to themselves and is sensitive to quiet beauty. PS: Everything I purchased there a year and a half ago has gotten better with age, deeper, richer and smoother. 3 out of 5.

I just bought a full size bottle after 3 years of trying it out in my favorite vintage shop that carries Perfumer H. I'm not sure why I waited so long, maybe the price point, but now it's an everyday signature. There's something extremely interesting going on here for me.... I remember on first whiff feeling like I had plunged down into deep, dark, cool water, where everything goes quiet. I can see why it's called ink (there's certainly papery and inky qualities to it) but to me, it feels aligned to the spirit of ink itself. Dark, opaque, permanent, infinite. It's odd, too—everyone who smells it on me says something different about it. Some say it smells spicy, some say it smells like the ocean. Whatever it is, I am into it for any season, any time of day... it's the kind of neutral aroma that just smells like intelligence.

this is very pretty, melancholic and singular. i think it’s one of Lyn Harris’ best creation (and you can really feel it’s from her). very dry vetyver and dusty cedar fragrance with hints of pepper, not an ounce of sweetness. the texture is reminiscent of ink on paper all the way through. after it settles on skin, it has an outdoorsy feel as well. it smells natural and introspective and has the volatility of the scent of the woods: it comes and goes, you have to focus on specific elements to catch it, it’s complex and floating. it’s always there but never overwhelming. signature scent worthy, can work anytime time of the day/year. it’s mysterious, unique and wearable, and reading or writing wearing this is such a beautiful experience. sillage is poor (and that’s on purpose) but longetivity is quite good.

Calling all librarians! Ink opens with dry, woody, musky notes of well-loved antique furniture, old paper and pencil shavings, blended seamlessly with a subdued, watery metallic note, let's call it ink, though I think it's a really clever use of ambroxan. Cedar and rooty vetiver dominate with papyrus and angelica, but the note list should probably be set aside as Ink is really experienced as a single accord, a photo-realist summoning of old libraries, polished book stacks, scholarly exertions. A beautiful daytime scent for the studious, or just for personal pleasure. Very unperfumey. I have a bottle and love wearing it, enjoying catching it from time to time.

Absolutely artful hipster fragrance in the same realm as Patchouli 24 by Le Labo, I don't know what by DS & Durga, and Paper by Commodity. Saying that, this is sublimely crafted. It's woody, cool, creamy and spicy. Unlike Patchouli 24, which it has the most in common with to my nose, there is no sweetness to be found. I can identify the patchouli, the elemi, pepper, cedar and ambroxan. Like those modern, dry fragrances, it wears close after a loud opening, and is completely gender-inclusive. A simultaneously cerebral and sexy, creamy and dark fragrance. Probably the best of the house.
