Greylocke

I'm a sucker for woods, and this is extremely woody, therefore it follows that I would love it. It's a cedary scent with a little pine too. I get something a bit tangy that I always associate with vetiver or papyrus. So while there is pine here, it doesn't smell like an evergreen forest to me. It reminded me of Timbuktu--woody and like dry grasses. It's not a particularly complex scent, and it's linear, but when it comes to these super woody fragrances, that is fine by me! I don't find this masculine, but very unisex. Woods are one of those things that I just think belong on both men and women. Notes from the PHLUR website: Sea salt, bergamot, birch leaf, silver vetiver, pine resin, grapefruit, lily of the valley, woody notes, amber, white floral, cedar, citrus, herbal/green notes, violet -------------------------------------------------------- Update: I purchased a FB. I fell for it because it is just about the perfect wood scent for me. Nicely balanced, not too much of any particular facet--not too tangy, not overly astringent, just the right amound of resin, no pepper, and smells like a real tree. Also does not cause massive headaches like many perfumes with chemicals do. I feel that those around me may not like it because it smells like straight-up TREE. But nevermind them, I wear it 100% for me, and there's nothing I love more than smelling trees around me 24/7, and this really fits the bill if you are eccentric in that regard like I am.

Greylocke is definitely something for the outdoorsy type. Very instantly pine the moment it's sprayed, but after 30 minutes or so it settles very nicely on my skin into a mixture of pine, vetiver, and some really faint hints of birch leaf. The smell definitely gives me that feeling of a cool, foggy fall day. I believe it is a very unisex fragrance. On some people it could read more masculine. But as a woman I've found that on me it just tends to smell very citrusy and woody. This one seems to be really affected by skin chemistry so I would definitely try a sample before committing to a full bottle. Luckily phlur has a lovely program where you get a coupon code after ordering a sample set that can be applied towards a full bottle, so the samples are essentially free. I haven't picked up any of the soapy or metallic notes that some people seem to smell, but again, that could just be skin chemistry! for me, a 22 year old outdoor enthusiast, its a 10/10!

Luckily I stocked up on this unique, clean fragrance before it was discontinued and the brand was also discontinued and purchased and rebranded in a way that makes it just a boring, basic “sweet skin musks and candies” line of fragrances. So far from what was originally intended with this brand. This fragrance is so clean and natural smelling. It was my signature scent for a couple of years and I just brought out an OG bottle to wear for a while. Very unique blend on conifer and aromatic, hard to describe. People always stop me to ask what I’m wearing on days that I have this on. Works well in cold weather as well as hot weather. I wish I could get my hands on their original “real Phlur” notes, that would be thrilling. Maybe another line will pick up the original Phlur scents.

Fresh done right! An amazing green scent. To sum this fragrance up, it smells as though you smashed up vetiver, various citrus on to a rock. Sounds strange I know, but, smells stunning to me. Perfect for anyone working in an office, or loves a green fragrance. Last for 5-6 hours and has a soft 1 to 1/2 hour projection. Please sniff this one out, I think a lot of men and women will enjoy this bad boy. this is my favorite Vetiver fragrance. Amazing forest in a bottle fragrance.

Love, love, love. This smells really close to the masterpiece Guerlain Vetiver. However, and I may get nailed to the wall for this, It smells much better. Really nice vetiver/pine note that settles down to this green clean smell. I am really impressed by this one. I have a coworker that is a tough critic of all my fragrances and she actually stopped me at work and said, "wait a minute. what do have on? That smells really good". Enough said. 9.5/10

Greylocke is exquisite. Perfect mix of pine and vetiver. A cool weather fragrance that is very unisex. I ordered the discovery set and this stood out to my nose. A cable knit sweater, boots and a hike along the Oregon Coast is what Greylocke reminds me of. My happy place. Moderate silliage and longevity on the skin, eternal on my clothes and leaves a wonderful scent trail. Love it!

Potent Vetiver with pine and cedar and hint of grapefruit and leather. Quite unique. The drydown of Greylocke EdP from Phlur is quite similar to Grey Vetiver from Tom Ford. Love love love! I think Fragrantica needs to update the Fragrance notes here - only pine is acurate and no apple tree at all. The most potent vetiver isn't even listed as note.

Nothing smells like Greylocke. I have searched high and low and nothing has the sharp piney smell mixed with vetiver and a crisp green apple. It honestly smells like the ocean beach along the woody Washington or Oregon coast and is like wearing a thick sweater with your hiking boots. Refined yet wild and natural.

This scent is definitely woodsy. Although it is unisex, it seems more on the masculine side to me. Unlike the other reviewer I haven't had an issue with longevity. In fact, I was hoping it would fade fast, but hours later even after trying to wash some off, it's still clinging to me. I don't hate the scent, I just do not like it on me. I was hoping for more of the sea salt and bergamot smells that it advertises but I did not smell either of those.

starts with cold pine trees, lemon zest and some sharp chemical/soap something that reminds me of aftershave. That soapy clean gets replaced by salt after a bit. It is supposed to finish "deep and complex" but to me it's more a pine/salt kind of generic "cologne" smell. I'll probably use it as a room spray.

This is a very vetiver forward scent. If you don't like dirty vetiver you won't like it. Very masculine, can't see women liking it. I find it mysterious and unusual, almost smells like Comet or Ajax with a bleachy kinda vibe but in a clean way.

The scent is a pleasant, fresh pine, suitable for men or women. After an hour, though, I can barely smell it on my wrist. Not sure if it's just my chemistry -- but on me, this has NO longevity.

This really transports me to a cold day in New England from my childhood. Seems overtly masculine for a unisex, but as a lady I really like it. Might have to grab a bottle.

Bought this scent because I was looking for something that was very close to the scent of Pine Tree. The reviews led me to believe I couldn't go wrong. I don't mind the smell at all, but when it comes to PINE, I'm a little less impressed than the previous reviewers seem to be in terms of waxing poetic. There's a little bit of a soapy smell. Kind of like a more gentle Irish Springs bar soap in the opening. You know how when you spray a piece of paper with a cologne or perfume, the smell of the wet paper initially infuses the scent? It's that magazin-y, perfume on paper tester, sort of smell that hits you right off the jump. Eventually, it does calm down and there's certainly a pine scent there with a crisp bitter berry background reminiscent of a Dunhill London Icon vibe, but less icy and less overripe. I like the story behind how Phlur makes this scent using throw-away pine tree stumps as part of the process, but at the current price-point I don't see them as being a contender in a situation where you can get something a bit more thoroughly vetted at a discount. I give this one a 7.5/10. It's over $100 for 50ml and that seems a bit steep.

this smells like burnt asphalt and pine trees at first. there's a weird burnt rubber thing going on. after awhile i get an earthy element that reminds me of patchouli or vetiver but is not quite either one. there is still the sense of asphalt but there is also more of a lightness from the pine. an interesting scent, and not one i'd wear but the best out of the phlur samples i tried recently.

So did not work at all for me. Quite tinny on the initial note, migraine almost immediately. Then lingered to smell much like a pine scented car freshener. Would NOT wash off!!! I tried. Pretty package, nicely written theme. I would advise anyone thinking of this to opt for the sample first. I would be quite hesitant to shell out $85 for a pine scented air freshener. One of those cheap ones you find at that. Ugh.

For me, it smells like a slightly sophisticated version of OFF. The notes under the insect repellant part of it are intriguing, especially the bergamot, but I just can't get past the turpentine-ey side of the heavy pine smell. It does have longevity, though - if you like it, you'll be getting a good value.

This is a strong and bold vetiver and pine scent. Very manly and gentlemen like. Not for the ambroxan loving crowd. Very unique and after checking out the review from Redolessence I do appreciate but it's not my thing. Long lasting with great sillage though.

Greylocke has a heavy masculine scent. On me it was just as heavy and strong after a few hours wear, as when I first sprayed it. I was hoping for so much more from this, but sadly smelled rather generic, to me.

Middle aged male reviewer, well versed in frags but still consider myself a layperson, and like to offer that perspective: The everyday non-fume-head would experience this as distinctly masculine with an old-school bent to it, what they may or may not recognize as a vetiver fougere classic freshy style, kinda along the lines of the old Eau Sauvage. I was under the impression that this brand is more about naturals, but I was mistaken. They have a "sustainability" gig going on that often leads people to believe they're natural, but from the looks of it...they are very transparent...they overwhemingly use what they consider to be safe synthetics in their formulations. More on their ethics, altho they state they do not test on animals, that does not mean their ingredients are not tested on animals; because they use so many synthetics, it's likely there is animal testing involved. Their final *product* isn't tested on animals, but the ingredients likely are. This part angers me, as it is used by too many other companies and is blatantly deceptive...IF that is their intent. And if it is, and companies feel the need to be deceptive about it, just stop using ingredients that torture animals and your problem is solved, isn't it? Alright...that said...(I can't stand deceptive advertising)... I quickly realized it couldn't be all natural based on my experience with it. I used a test pad and put several sprays on a neutral material that I then leave nearby where I'm working. I waft it towards me to or come in/out of the room to test projection, etc. There was a distinct sharpness and projection that most naturals just won't give. This isn't a bad thing for those seeking out a classic vetiver-style freshy, just pointing it out. If I had to guess based on the "pop" of scent I'd get from it down a hall, there's bunch of iso e super at play which also would add to the woodsy experience people mention. The sharp side gives us the fresh greeny vibe. I'm not a freshy fan. At all. But I'd say for this style of frag it would appeal to those who like the vetiver fougere genre a great deal. It seems of decent quality and is still wafting towards me six hours later. I'm very sensitive to frags and get headaches and nausea readily, esp from freshys, and would begin to get that from this if I wore it. Which leads to my use of it today as a room freshener, after I had company (someone wearing a terrible perfume reminiscent of Angel, no offense Mugler, RIP, you had some other great frags). When I read another review referencing the car freshener...unfortunately...it stuck. He/she is correct. Once you get that idea, it's easy to associate it with this. Where the frag isn't grassy/woodsy, we have our tacky hanging-off-rear-view-mirror piney freshener. Overall rating: Not something I'd ever wear because it's not my style, but for a brand using a lot of synthetics which I'm also not a fan of, it's well crafted and I would think would make vetiver lovers happy. Forget what I/we said about the car freshener and go from there.

I was feeling frisky and bought Greylocke as a blind buy during an online Sephora sale. I wasn't expecting much, as I think the unisex perfumes that go on sale on Sephora tend to lean more at that intersection of "smells synthetic" and "smells inexpensive." I have to say I'm slightly impressed though. This is by no means a sophisticated scent, but it's clean and inoffensive. The most peculiar aspect, for me, is that the top notes tend to carry far beyond the first spray. The bergamot and grapefruit notes are most prevalent on my skin (hence the "clean" reference). Beyond the citrus, I'm getting some vetiver with subtle cedarwood underneath. I'm not really getting a lot of "pine" or "pine resin." I also don't think I'm familiar enough with birch leaf to recognize or not recognize it. I'm not getting any "soap" or "chemical" like other people, but I could see how the combination of grapefruit and woods might remind someone of insect repellent. All in all, this seems like a clean day-time scent that one could wear in an office setting (I might just keep the full bottle at my desk) or while going about your errands. Unisex, while maybe slightly masculine of center. The citrus feels more of a warm-weather note to me, while the woods feels more cool-weather. I honestly think you could wear it year-round. It's certainly not worth the $96 I'm seeing it listed for, but if you can get this for half off, I think $48 is a fine price for a versatile, inoffensive day scent.

This fragrance is pine, salt, and vetiver primarily with some light birch. The apple would have been a welcome addition to the fragrance, but I don't get any of it. What I like about this scent is that it truly captures the intended feel of New England, being sturdily woody and ocean-y (though in no way traditionally "aquatic"). It's not a strong scent, but as heavy as it is on the pine, I think the softness helps it avert industrial cleaner associations it might otherwise conjure. While it's quite masculine, it's not stereotypically so, so it can easily be worn by a woman. I think this has been discontinued, and Greylocke is not irreplaceable. I think Abbott NYC is another clean line that produces similarly outdoorsy-for-urbanite-men scents, but Greylocke is a quality fragrance that is well worth picking up for the right price. Verdict: Walden-worthy.

This is another outstanding offering from phlur For me this is similar to TF Grey vetiver but it has a sharp yet elegant greenness that stays underneath the fragrance, but is apparent in the opening. I find this as a elegant and refined throwback to vetiver fragrances of the past. Although this fragrance is too old for me and more suitable for 35 plus men, I find this fragrance reminding me of dark moss in the winter and spray starch for ironing and it works oddly enough. I believe this to be a talented mix of green irish tweed's opening with TF grey vetiver EDP For the refined gentleman who loves terre d'hermes or dunhill icon and Creed GIT

Bought the sampler, enjoyed it so much and splurged on a full bottle. Comes in 50ml only and will set you back $70 if you ask for a discount. I do not understand the note breakdown at all here and it's very misleading since this hasn't really been reviewed. Begins with a petrol smell like Dior Fahrenheit, settles nicely into an earthy vetiver, and develops citrus + saltiness at the end that blends well with the vetiver. Smells very similar to TF Grey Vetiver and beats out it's longevity.

The opening is a blast of pine, but it settles out quickly and this becomes a little flat for me. I just get cedar after that. I ordered a few samples from them. They're not bad, but of the three I've tried now, I'm getting the same thing: they're gone or skin scents after an hour. I don't know why this often seems to be the case with fragrances that leave out the toxic chemicals, it's a shame.

The pine in this one opens and closes within a minute and this turns into something incredibly salty and citrus on my skin. This remains very salty and citrusy with just the tiniest hints of pine throughout the day. This is definitely a bright and beachy fragrance that would work well for anyone at any age.

Very heavy & chemically. Masculine. Will NOT wash off no matter how I try and what I use. It's giving me a headache. I am afraid to try their other samples. Really pissed off, actually! They are all marketing and hype. Its cheap, chemical perfume. You will not smell any botanicals.

If you've ever been in a New England wetland in August, this scent will be reminiscent. Hot, lush, floral wilderness. Fresh air. Sunlight.
