Rose by Cardin

I asked a while ago if there were any difference with the vintage compared to the reformulation. Vintage prices are really steep. Since I didn't want to take the risk of blind buying a vintage, I purchased the reformulation for a ridiculously cheap price. I figured if I didn't like it, I could use it as a room spray. Though I only purchased a one ounce I think this will last me some time as it is strong - I mean really strong! I could smell it as soon as I opened the package! And it smells great! All I can say is if the reformulation is any indication, the scent of the vintage must be amazing. This really is such a pretty rose chypre that has a nice woodsy feel. The rose is so natural. Smells like a true spicy garden rose. This fragrance somewhat reminds me of a very rosy Coriandre, or a more complex Tea Rose. A big red peppery rose, with green leaves, stems, and rosewood. A light spiciness, a hint of sweetness, a teeny bit of soapiness from the aldehydes, and a little incense from the vetiver and earthiness from patchouli rounds it all out. Great silage too. I tested a spray on the back of my hand this morning and was surrounded by roses. I think it will have great longevity too. I tried washing it off my hand and can still smell it. Oh well, it looks like I'll be wearing this for today! I just have to remember to go easy on the trigger or I'll gag everyone around me. It really is that strong. As far as being old-fashioned, I agree with mapache. So what!? Wear what you like! But I don't think it's dated. Or maybe, I just happen to like that. Anyway, for the price, who cares? I love it!

Rose Cardin was a blind buy in an attempt to find an affordable chypre I adore. This did not disappoint. In many ways, this has many similarities to Soir De Lune by Sisley. The most glaring being the beautiful Rose/Patchouli/Oakmoss focus in both. Also, both have incredibly unique and beautiful bottles yet Sisley favors Art Nouveau while Cardin favors retro-futuristic lines and googie architecture here. What sets Rose Cardin apart from other woody/floral Chypres is her unique opening. First spray is an electric mirror- like the past looking ahead at the future. It is a sparkly, fantastical fruit jam that doesn’t known whether it wants to be mature or juvenile. And I love that. Quickly (and very happily) she dries down to that deep, timeless Chypre experience that never feels dated; and wears like a shockingly effortless perfume. This would be an excellent beginner Chypre with enough to love for more seasoned wearers of this perfume genre (especially since a 1oz bottle is cheaper than a coffee). It doesn’t matter that the sillage is not as explosive as other chypres. It lasts many hours on the skin and it is just TOO affordable to pass up something this beautiful. For a perfume that looks and smells like Jessica Rabbit’s boudoir if she had relocated to Orbit City, I give this a 10/10.

The woody rose chypre: it's a certain vibe. Shuffling and shimmying, at once it is dusty-moss in a shadowy thicket, then it's a neon-petal roses dappled with banana oil and lathered in Pre de Provence soap. This particular one, Rose by Cardin, delineates from the classic Jean Couturier Coriandre, turning up the levels on the aldehydes and rose and underlined with a patchouli and musks. It's pretty ferocious to start, for which I approve, but may prove overwhelming to some. However, it evens into a blissful bubble that sends me adrift to "never never." Francoise Caron knows her way around a chypre. She knows how to add a few thorns to something pretty and keep it enticing. Rose Cardin is no exception: what may seem a 90s budget scent is actually a juggernaut of its kind, almost emblematic in nature, worn like an amulet. The sillage is a gift—take care not to over-apply! It's vigorous. I can't speak to newer formulations as I picked up my 90s version for a song and it sings all day long. If you want to possess what I own, seek bottles that are encased in a deep purple box, and enjoy!

Although this one is very much the strong, woody-mossy rose chypre with late '80s feelings, it's also more delicately floral than I'd remembered. Lily of the valley is nice here. I have a newer bottle. I thought I'd compare it to Roses 'n Patchouli by Reminiscence, and then for some reason I also thought I should add some Ciara 80%. My bottle of Ciara has a cheap smell at the base which is sad, but the incense adds so much lace to Roses n Patchouli. Rose by Cardin has no need of anything extra imo. In fact, I've completely overdone it, of course. As for the comparison between Roses n Patchouli and Rose by Cardin, they share a delicious, penetrating wine rose and natural-feeling woodiness. Of course Roses n Patchouli is heavier on the patchouli. Rose by Cardin has a lot of aldehydes, but somehow they smell so similar to the musk combination in Roses n Patchouli. For me the biggest distinction between the two is how pretty the florals are in Rose by Cardin. And I would say the overall quality is slightly better in Roses n Patchouli.

I have to bottle shown — blind bought based on notes as there was not a tester available. This does not smell like the notes listed. I get a floral but not obviously rose, something very sweet, and a sharp musk drydown. This does not feel like a chypre to my nose. I am not getting any patchouli or any spices or smoke. This has a very creamy texture to my nose until the far drydown. It’s not bad, just not what I was expecting. A reviewer below said this is magenta in a bottle and I would agree with that. It almost has a fatty feel to it, which I’m assuming is the aldehydes. It does not smell aldehydic in the traditional sense, Like No 5 or White Diamonds and etc. I’ll probably keep my bottle when I want to wear something out of my usual range but I’ll still keep looking for that spicy rose chypre.

I see this listed for sale on different sites and the bottle colors are different. Some bottles are red and some are light purple. I'm assuming the red bottle with the dark top is the vintage since it's priced so much higher. Anyway, would anyone know, since this is a discontinued fragrance that isn't produced anymore, if it makes a difference which type you get? When did they they stop production on this product? If it was reformulated and when? I want to buy it because the notes sound terrific but I'm not willing to drop a wad of cash on a blind buy. Anyone with any info to share please let me know. Thanks.

Superb! Absolutely amazing chypre - rich - deep - dark amaranth or vinous rose, that's a generous gesture of the lover to the side of his beloved one - to fill the room with big vases on the floor and dozens of tall most expensive roses in it, dishes with exotic fruits on the small tables, patchouli oil on the lamps... Its more likely to be a flight to stratosphere wearing Rose by Cardin on a date. As a big amateur of rich spicy roses - I want to admit - its almost same high level of perfumery that rose in Paestum Eau d'Italie, that I admire as well.

I knew I would love this. Why? BECAUSE IT'S FEKKIN DISCONTINUED, MATE, INNIT! Sorry, mate, you got a loisence t'be a masterpiece? It's now a part of a trilogy of perfect rose fragrances with which I'm obsessed. The others being Aramis 900 and Paul Smith Rose. Love the bottle design Love the smell. It even exists in a space, between 900 and PSR, maintaining a potently chypretic character, while leaning much harder into the lifelike rose of Paul Smith. Fantastic and fortunately not the most ridiculously priced secondary market vintage.

13 years ago my review is the first one on this page! Back then it seemed discontinued but now I've learned it was reformulated. Naturally I got myself a new bottle and it is so charming! Well, the bottle is still tacky with its pink body and purple plastic cap (I think it was glass when I was a kid). But the juice is very reminiscent of what I remember from back then: a grown up dusty rose scent. The rose isn't sharp or cloying and the overall vibe is quite "clean" and pleasant. It's sold dirt cheap now and great value for money.

Its dusty, mature rose perfume. its used to be popular during the late 1990s. i cant believe tat i used to wear this in my 20s haa! maybe perfume in that period all smells mature?? nevertheless, i am happy to get this new bottle from fragranceX recently. its damned cheap. by re-applying this reminds me of my younger clubbing years haaa.. unfortunately this perfume do smells outdated (based on my own opinion), i will keep it in my collection for memory.

Bold and sultry all at once : Rose is a very couture fragrance. Imagine the mellowness of a rose-peach duet à la Nahema by Guerlain, braced by fizzy cardamom and earthy oakmoss, along with a slight leather undertone (probably brought forward by the moss) - this is what Rose smells like to me. And despite several reformulations, the quality remains and a little still goes a long way. A must have for all classic chypres lovers and Nahema devotees!

This is Magenta in the bottle .All these spicy notes and roses and incense...I think this is one of the best offerings online now if not the best.This is scent of joyful bright day without the sun and rain.Very comfident and enjoyable, calm and seductive aroma I feel me more happy then I wear it,it pushes me for to take some more special womanish outfits on ...JUST SMILING...

This is the only big, woody, rose chypre I need now. Rose by Cardin is so much more fun. I have the current Five Star version, never had the pleasure of smelling a vintage. Thank you, and a fond adieu to Agent Provocateur, Paloma Picasso, and even Coriandre, Portrait of a Lady, and Soir de Lune. I could still have this and Diva probably, though. :)

A slightly jammy, spiced rose chypre with some red wine sprinkled on top - bolstered by coriander and lashings of amber and musk. If you like Paloma Picasso, EL Knowing, Aromatics Elixir, Ungaro Diva, etc, then you’ll probably like this. It has big hair and shoulder pads, too. Designing Women with a French accent.

This is so amazing! Pierre Cardin Rose starts off with rose that is quickly joined by patchouli, then coriander and rosewood, trailed by hints of amber, musk and incense. The rose is definitely the main attraction and it smells like a beautifully bloomed red rose. What a gorgeous perfume!

An impressive chypre rose perfume with an interesting and collectable bottle. The original I remember in the 90s when they launched it had a much stronger note of rose. The new version is more a classic 80s chypre than a rose perfume but for this price it, s a great journey in time.

This fragrance is freshly cut rose. Not all these other complex notes. No carnation. Rose. And a little woods and a little musk. Sits very close to the skin. As a rose love I am glad I added it to the collection, but is it a fave rose? Not close. I wish it did a bit more.

Wow! This perfume is something! Everlasting! Strong, feminine, exotic, delicious. Makes you charming ! I adore it! I got lots of compliments because of Rose by Pierre Cardin. And its not a common fragrance here in Brazil. Many people had never heard about it !

They don't make it anymore, hah? What a shame. I had it when I was a teenager and it was the most beautiful smell, not to mention the lovely bottle. Such a lovely lovely scent!

Was this also branded under "Taffetas"? I've seen bottles on Ebay that are pink with a purple lid and look like this but the box reads Taffetas. Intriguing!

Unique!!!!! I love this scent.

This is an unconventional rose. It is neither ethereal nor romantic. It is not waiting patiently in the garden for you to admire her. It has higher amibitions than being part of one of your artfully, tastefully arranged bouquets ! It surely doesn't count the shrinking violet among its relatives... I imagine this rose to be a well paid working girl who enjoys her power at work and an exciting night life. And forget about her "Queen of the Flowers" status, you can rub shoulders with her. As long as you let her make the first move,that is. Because she is the one who decides. It seems like you can judge a fragrance by its bottle sometimes... Look at it : fuchsia pink and deep purple, geometrical shape : Very reminiscent of Cardin's daringly creative designs, which were meant to appeal to self confident and bold women. I find it easier to wear than most chypres, since it is on the green and fresh side.Indeed,the opening notes almost smell like a mix of relaxing essential oils. Although it is not something I would wear regularly, because I am not into chypres as much as I used to be ,I like it a lot.

I finally got a mini vintage..:) This is really a stroll down memory lane and I now know why I liked it so much. It starts off with fresh bergamot in combination with spicy coriander and cardamon. The rosewood is giving body to the top and easily merges with the heart, which predominant note consists of a big thick rose. The base of sandalwood, patchouli, amber and musk is kicking in quite early and dries down somewhat sharp, still with a bit of rose present. On me this it becomes a spicy rose which lightens up by the bergamot and is given more of a character from chypre basenotes. It softens down after a while and becomes a very pleasant frag, but a bit monotone. I'm therefore uncertain about buying this scent and for the moment pleased with my mini. But someday I may go hunting for a big vintage bottle.

I read the notes and wanted this so badly. Found it on Amazon for a reasonable price, didn't realize it was shipping from France. Not an issue except it is good to know for shipping expectations. I wore it and I must say, this is not for the shy! It is very much a rose chypre, and it has staying power. I feel like the list of notes was made from my favorite list, who would have thought they would all play together so nicely? I guess grocery store scents in France are much nicer than ours in USA! The bright fuschia/purple bottle is perfect for this lovely and loud scent. I'm really glad I got it.

I've got a sample of Portrait of a Lady right here side by side with Rose by Pierre Cardin and I'm amazed at how similar they smell. Not identical of course but a lot closer than I would have ever expected! POAL is an absolute beast but Rose is pretty strong also. While it does not smell as expensive or high quality, I would venture to say that for around 12 bucks, Rose by Pierre Cardin will give you an experience that is reminiscent of POAL.

It smells like rose, all right. But to my nose, it has a vintage feeling, grown up/mature... Maybe due to the vintage combo: aldehydes, coriander, carnation, ylan-ylang and vetiver. Very long lasting but not intrusive, it lingers close to the skin. I guess man could wear it too, it is not the typical rose you see in perfumes today.

I like this one and it's a classical for me . This is odd because i've always thought there was pepper in that , but apparently , there is none O_o , maybe i confused with Rosewood . It's not discontinued in France however , i an see it every week at the supermarket where i make my weekly grocery shopping.

i really like it.when i was at high school it was very populer in my country.classic but never annoying rose oil,vetiver gives it greenish style. if you love this one but you think hard to find,you must be try-lulu guiness bed of roses-not in database,they are very very similar in a good way.

This was not ALWAYS a grocery perfume! I bought mine at our Higbee's (now Dillards) many years ago and loved it, except for the fact that the bottle is bigger at top and narrow at the bottom, so I ended up annoying myself by knocking it over from time to time!

This is such a beautiful, dry, gothic rose chypre. A no brainer cheapie if you love rose dominant fragrances. And the sillage on this is incredible. It'll stay in the air after you've left the room.

Very interesting fragrance, reminds me Y by YSL or Empreinte by Courrèges. This fragrance shows that supermarket fragrances are not only bad and cheap.

Rose by Cardin is parfume is the real "agent provocateur" without will be so sweet. Sexy, dirty with mysterious seductress....

A classic!! To me it ́s like Idylle, Narciso Rodriguez EDT and City Glam. Wonderful!

It smells okay, I guess. But I honestly don't smell much rose. I smell the jasmine, I think, and the aldehydes. Evidently, that's what no one else says (or thinks). Anyway, it's not awful. But to me, it's not impressive. I got the the 30 ml size for about $10, so the price is definitely low. If you're curious, it's not much of a financial gamble. I bought it at the ShopLLC website.

This is soooooooooo strong. Rose and sweetness, too sweet at the moment for me but I did spray rather a lot. I have seen all Pierre Cardin sold in the large store on the way into Mahon, Menorca, very cheaply. I will try less of it & in the winter it may hold itself back a little. The only other scents I have as strong as this is Rumba & Amouage

Not much rose but alot of aldehydes, smells very musky and woody, which I like but I wouldn't call this a rose perfume. Good value but kind of lackluster and pre-modern.

If Rachel Tyrell had a signature perfume, it would be Rose by Pierre Cardin. 🌹⚡ The scent entails a 80s chypre quality and vintage aura portraying timeless elegance. Just like Rachel's presence, this rose carries a vegetal vibrancy and life, while at the same time there is an ever so slight presence of sourness which reminds us of the metallique interior hidden within, the smell of iron. A synthetic facet created in such a marvelous way, that we tend to question if she is indeed, r e a l. Does being alive mean to be real or is real just a projection of our perception what alive should be? Our Rose delivers the enigma, and so does Rachel. The sweetness of the rose accord is cut down by a slight undertone of something resembling tobacco ( even though tobacco is not a listed note, there is incense ) which brings back the iconic scenes where our heroine piercingly stares at us, sharply, concentrated and always ready to stir the conversation up with her witty answers. Of course, all of that while holding a lit cigarette between her fingers. Even though this perfume was originally a 90s gem, the bottle does have a strong 80s feel. If you were to take a walk in a dystopian version of Los Angeles, roaming the streets you would likely find Rose by Pierre Cardin behind a perfume store window. Glowing in it's neon essence under a flashing light, you curiously look up to spot the slogan: "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" - Or do they indeed dream about iconic fashion and electric chypre scents which create a statement eligible for their nature?

Just got my bottle in the mail yesterday, I’m wearing this to bed tonight, like men, I think the best way to get to know a perfume is to sleep with them. Clearly, that’s a joke, the best way to get to know a perfume is to find out what Sarah Mayes thinks of it. Anywho, I’m wearing this tonight and I really like it. Growing up I remember visiting my grandmas house in the mid 90’s and I loved using her fancy guest bathroom, because it smelled so good in there. Weird? Yes...but it smelled so strongly of a soap called Lever 2000 (for all your 2000 parts) which I adored washing my hands and face with as a boy. To me this perfume smells exactly like that soap, or my clouded memory of the scent of that soap. Listed notes be damned, I smell soap and I’m not mad about it. I would recommend this to anyone who is not put off by strong, sharp perfumes, a few strategically placed sprays will do ya. I would steer clear of this if you’re prone to migraines as the aldehydes in this one are quite pronounced. There’s nothing subtle about this one, but that’s my speed anyway. I’ll be keeping Rose Cardin for a while I think.

A 70s scent from the 90s! I love the plastic fantastic futuro Jetsons era meet's Jem & the Holograms neon pink and blue bottle which doesn't fit the contents whatsoever! Mossy Rose chypres are something I have always enjoyed but rose is not my friend in heavy doses. Rose Cardin is the perfect midpoint for me. Diva and Knowing are a tad too acrid on me, Paloma Picasso a little too leathery and green, Magie Noire gives me a headache, Aromatics Elixir and Animale give me hives and Agent Provocateur is lovely but too soft and baby powdery. Eau de Soir is too expensive, Explosive is unsettling, Coriandre smells too much like celery. This scent is like all of these blended together in a vat with EL Private collection and a dash Tea Rose by Perfumers Workshop. It is neither headache or allergy inducing but fills the gap where all these would otherwise sit in my collection. The essential hippie shop meets glamorous 70s aromatic green mossy and herbal chypre and it is incredibly affordable! The modern version isn't that potent which actually makes it easier to wear in public. Highly recommended.

Received this $10 gem today. This was quite a good surprise. A Rose chypre.....classic...vintage-y smelling..uncomplicated,but this one projects...and lasts on my skin a good amount of time !! Some may think/feel that this is "dated" old school..un-modern......Well....yes..but all that matters to me is that a scent "smells great" !!! I am sure some of you will think...."grandma" scent....(I hate that term!).... For "what" this is...it is a great scent. ....and for $10 ?!.....on eBay. The original formulation (I have the current one) must be even better,,,(?)..but at 4 times the price. This will do !! The bottle is....well...I admit..."tacky"...cheapish thin plastic cap...but good sprayer. At first spritz...I got aldehyde-ish alcohol vibes...but that passes quickly..IMO....the mid and drydown of this scent is what you HAVE TO wait for. I get rosy-peppery -coriandre -woodsy vibes for sure. Very happy with this one.

I believe I have the reformulation and the only version I've smelled. To my nose this is a smokey, balsamic rose. A bit sour and a hint of ashtray layered upon yellow roses, not red. Yellow roses remind me most of the smell and taste of a deliciously sweet and crisp apple. The best apples are "rosey". When I press my nose down into my skin, I smell what reminds me of David Yurman yet this is dustier less fruity and slightly more complicated. I am also definitely reminded of one of my favorites, Aromatic Elixir, but AE is richer and louder and less sweet. For me this is a scent to wear while reading and sipping tea, it's calming and soothes me but I don't find it sexy or especially alluring. The bottle delights my inner eighties child.

Damned the fruit! Did they HAVE to? If it wasn't for the fruit salad note this would have been perfect! The fruits add a rather cheerful, happy clappy dimension which is so NOT me! I am a temperamental woman from Southern Europe who fret every morning before my first cup of Greek coffee... All i get is a warm, spicy, Smoky rose and then....voop! FRUITS! No matter how subtle, faint or soft I can still pick them!!!?! I am angry, otherwise this scent would have been up there along Sacre and the likes.. But, no, they HAD to make it palatable, so instead of adding Amber, or honey, a touch of vanilla or dried fruits they added a hefty dose of fruit salad! Good sillage and longevity too, such a pity.....going in a corner to sulk....

Oh this is such a special fragrance. I remember my mother used to own a bottle of this, but she never wore it. As a child I was drawn to the bottle, but distinctly remember that I disliked the scent. So today, I re-approached with caution. I now know what it was that put me off back then: Aldehydes. As a child I had no idea what they were but couldn't get past them and scrubbed it off. Coming back to this fragrance today, I instantly recognized the dreaded aldehydes and a mystery was solved. But I now know they don't necessarily last, so I waited. A few minutes in they faded, and the most beautiful woody rose-carnation emerged. I love this.
