Green Generation Unisex

Mine is the GG aftershave spray from, I think, 2001 (code 1313). Doesn't last too long...naturally, it's an aftershave...and the fruitiness is almost gone but it's still better than the coniferous sledgehammer original. I would stock up if I could but I lucked out finding the one I have.

This is a difficult perfume to review. Not a true green as fruity notes are initially quite strong. I find the mint overtones quite odd next to the warm fruit. It is quite herbal. Works as a unisex fragrance as no sweetness. Not overly powerful nor long lasting. Strangely for a green, it also works in cooler weather. This is an interesting addition to ones collection.

This review is for Green Generation Him, which is not yet listed in the database. This is an unbelievably rare fragrance, as is the Her version - the unisex version is the one most connoisseurs are aware of, and even that one is very difficult to source. Based on the note pyramid for the unisex, I'd say GG Him is quite different, and perhaps a little more complex. This is a woody aromatic fougere with very solid drydown phases, and a surprisingly intricate blend of notes. I'm surprised because this was so cheap: $9 an ounce. Unlike the unisex and Her versions, this one comes in an opaque black glass bottle with matching black lid, the exact same shade as current Drakkar Noir. Top notes are clear as follows: Bergamot, lime, grapefruit, lavender, black currant, Calone, mint Heart notes, also clear, as follows: Tomato leaf, anise, grass, Calone, pine, neroli Base notes: Amber, pine, white musk In the first five minutes, think a heavier citrus then PS Sport, but not by much, and perhaps a bit less balanced and less natural than Sport. There's a scratchy sort of mentholated lavender that follows, cut from the same "gummy," synthetic cloth as Laroche's Horizon and Drakkar, but then within minutes it's significantly darker and smoother, thanks to the pissy black currant. I'm reminded of the masculine Claiborne Sport's top accord. Ten minutes in, and a very unique anise, pine, and Calone accord emerges. This creates a very rich but "fresh" anise note, the most prominent player in the scent. The Calone acts in much the same way as it does in Cool Water, creating an analog of neroli, but the pine underpinning it all is just as (if not more so) reminiscent of Aqua Quorum. It all smells pretty crisp, well-judged, and unconventionally masculine in a sporty post-Green Irish Tweed/Cool Water kind of way, borrowing from the originators and their imitators. The dry down four hours in is not very inspired, a dusty herbal woody amber alongside some clean musks. It smells concentrated enough though that I don't get an impression of any cheapness or corner-cutting. I would imagine this was released in 1998 alongside the others in the Green Generation line, and it suffers only a little from a slightly cheap-smelling top accord, redeemed soon after by a richer-smelling, and more natural heart and base. It's a very interesting overall effect that I get from GG Him, a fragrance that is a little sweet, a little sour, undeniably "fresh" in that preppy nineties manner, and brimming with grassy floral greenness. Keep an eye out for this fragrance, it's worth a blind buy if you enjoy stuff like Claiborne Sport, Horizon, Aqua Quorum, and Cool Water.

I haven't tried this but it sounds like Eau de Tsar.
