Java Wood

I love this scent so much and it does have a woody, licorice-y character. I too was worried at first that it was underpowered, but now I wonder if maybe the first few sprays in the atomizer were stale/oxidized/whatever. It seems better now, several sprays in. I also wonder if something in it triggers anosmia more than other fragrances - in me at least. It's definitely not overpowering, which makes it great for work and tight, crowded spaces. It's office-safe, yet still brings a unique touch. The other day I wore it to a work meeting, and I was wearing a face mask because my wife had a cold. Lo and behold - when the mask occasionally gaped open at my neck, I could smell Java Wood! UPDATE 11/06/25 I'm so glad I got this stuff. It seems a bit stronger now. I still stand by my new-bottle-stale-first-spray theory. Today I sprayed one spray on the neck at 3 pm, and now at 10:20 pm I can still smell it when the A/C starts blowing. It's perfect for business because it's classy, never too strong or distracting, and still unique. Honestly, it works anywhere.

Opening features vetiver with prominent licorice and anise notes. Oddly I then pick up a little gun powder, which may be the tobacco. Cumin and pepper are present but both are mixed well in the composition. This is interesting and I like it. I don’t pick up a bandaid vibe as one reviewer states below. But as Mr. Cornell states below, this does stay close. I’m getting decent longevity on my skin, about 4 hours and that’s very good on my perfume absorbing skin.

This is a fragrance meant to be layered, if you read about them. I do find it lovely, green, fresh walk in the forest type of scent. I LOVE vetiver so I love this. It's soft, pretty...very unisex. Not the best of performance on its own but I plan to see what it layers well with. I have found that layering scents can improve their performance dramatically, compared to one or the other on its own. It's rather spendy, though. That's what puts me on the fence.

Definitely get the warm smoky peppery note up front. Very bold. Settles to a milder licorice and cedar wood then Vetiver. Very nice. Close projection with great length. I get 8 hours.

This is largely a vetiver fragrance on me. Based on the note profile this should be one that I love, but I find it too woody and peppery for my taste. This opens with vetiver and pickle juice--I have no idea what is giving a pickle juice accord, but that's what I get. Thankfully that doesn't last more than 5-10 minutes, and then I get a minty licorice/anise, vetiver, and pepper. In my opinion this leans masculine.

This smelled strangely nostalgic for me straight away and it took me a couple of days to place it, for me this smells just like Christmas, bare with me here. I don't know if this is just a English thing or not but a traditional Christmas activity for young children here is to make a thing called a Christingle, it's a orange with cloves stuck in it, sometimes star anise and sometimes licorice sweets too, you use the Christingle as a candle holder and you take it to church for a Christmas service, I know it's a bit bonkers. This perfume smells, to me, just like my memories of Christmas church services as a child. It has a woody smokey scent like a old church, with old books, incense and antique wooden pews, and it has a the scent of the Christingle, with the licorice, orange peel and sweetness. I definitely agree that there is a hint of something like a fresh plaster (band aid) or a opening antiseptic scent, but that fades.

I am usually opposed to layering as I find that it disrupts the carefuly thought balance of perfumes. But I thought that I might as well try to layer perfumes that are also designed to fit this narative. So I layered Java Wood with Rosa Damascena and I was positively surprised with the result! The most luscious earthy spicy rose emerged, and as much as I liked these two fragrances independently, they go even better together! Adjust the quantity as you like. I did a 2:1 wood to rose and it's perfect🥰

Not impressed with my first impressions about Java Wood! this frag. Sadly, it doesn't project. Stays close to skin. You have to bring your nose in contact with your hand to catch a whiff of the fragrance! Poor sillage too. And its longevity? Still understudying it...

Weird, it has all the ingredients i like, but somehow i get the sensation of fresh bandaid. When you rip of the plastic foil of the bandaid, that kind of smell. Could be my skin of course. Not for me then.
