Loup

Devilish cherries combine with a bit of cotton candy to produce the “fluff” (read: “fur”) of Prin’s latest, ridiculously-priced masterpiece that hurts so good upon application. In the heat of NY’s September weather, which is probably not ideal for such a delicate and unctuous composition, there’s nothing too stinky or masculine about this confection. The amber’s just right, modulated by castoreum—the real stuff—to give off a richly resonate (resinous) aura. Although Loup doesn’t quite travel the widest gamut of olfactive delights that some of Prin’s other works are known for... this one’s missing a wild bouquet of flowers... this perfume perhaps benefits from a slightly more restrained and deft touch, letting the deep base notes shine in their glory from the very beginning. Loup is some of the best of Prin’s work but also outrageously priced. I’ll cherish my decant, knowing that by the time I’ve reached bottom, Prin will have released five other equally interesting fragrances. Is Loup worth practically twice the price of Varuek? I’m not sure. Ginsberg’s “Howl:” Visions! omens! hallucinations! miracles! ecstasies! gone down the American river! Dreams! adorations! illuminations! religions! the whole boatload of sensitive bullshit! Breakthroughs! over the river! flips and crucifixions! gone down the flood! Highs! Epiphanies! Despairs! Ten years’ animal screams and suicides! Minds! New loves! Mad generation! down on the rocks of Time! Real holy laughter in the river! They saw it all! the wild eyes! the holy yells! They bade farewell! They jumped off the roof! to solitude! waving! carrying flowers! Down to the river! into the street!

Started out surprisingly "cordial" and ambery...little did I know a SPICE BOMB was hidden underneath. The camphor, clove, & pepper were sinus-clearing, while tobacco & hay impart a vegetal & musty sweetness. The animalic castoreum combined with cumin (as per usual to his style) is overbearing to most standards. It's good for an unconventional affair, but almost a little too much of everything except the oud, which makes the price questionable; however, the dry-down is fluffy and comforting.

Intensely animalic woody aromatic from the enfante terrible of modern niche perfumery that repeats the same themes he is notorious for. Opening with a flurry of aromatics including cumin, camphor, clove, pepper, hay and tobacco, the perfume moves to a woody middle of oud, labdanum and amyris resin. It settles on a musky leathery bed of real castoreum, benzoin and slight patchouli. The scent is very similar to Varuek and some of his other recent offerings and also overpriced. But die hard fans will not be disappointed with the dark animalic glut that is on full display. The masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong projection and good longevity. Enjoy!
