Moss Gown

Thank you so much for the sample, Charna Ethier. Moss Gown is unquestionably "of the Earth." The ingredients are extremely high quality, and the fragrance is so transportive, that I think it should only be used in sacred ceremonies, which is not to say that it's not wearable. It is definitely accessible and delightful to wear. It's the sweetness of dried grass and sunflower heads that drifts through an open barn door, where you stand in the shade next to leather saddles and a spigot that has been dripping water onto the same stone slab for decades. It's contained in the swirl of steam rising from the porcelain cup of yellow chrysanthemum tea, with a single clear rock of crystallized sugar slowly dissolving at the bottom. It's late afternoon in Beijing and you lazily watch the people on the street through the window of the restaurant while waiting for your tea to cool. It is the honeyed balsamic scent of a meadow in the evening after the Sun has been beating down on it all day. It's the sweetness found in a handful of dried petals. It's on a farm in a place where you only get to visit, but when you are there it's absolutely tranquil no matter where you look. This fragrance is so deeply relaxing that it comes all the way around the spectrum and makes me feel excited. I think it's love.

The initial blast is a great force of wet green moss. It is the scent of pure deep shade, as if I were sitting next to a creek under a giant tree whose roots and base were covered in deep green velvet. A few minutes in and the bright sun streams through the branches and a gentle breeze brings in the scent of the nearby meadow with wild growing chamomile and sunflowers. I think I am in love! All of this from a tiny spritz! A small test. A few hours in and everything has softened - the vegetal has warmed in the sun and dried a bit - the gentle dry floral smell of meadow flowers and chamomile is in the front and the deep moss is ever present humming in the background. For me the visual aesthetic that this fragrance conjures is art nouveau. This fragrance pairs well with original Lalique jewelry. I am not sure yet about the longevity but the sillage is definitely there. Regardless this is a work of art that will be going on my full bottle wish list!

I had just received my full bottle of Love in a Mist and included was a sample of this little beauty. This perfume started out smelling like hay on me then after a couple of minutes it unfolded into a mossy and powdery scent from yesteryear. This reminded me of my Grandmother but in a good way. She always smelled so powdery and soft yet herbal at the same time. She loved this type of scent. This is one of those classic scents that women of elegance and distinction would wear to go out to dinner and dancing w/ their husband, it is a night out on the town kind of fragrance. I am sending the sample off to my sister who lives in Atlanta. I wanted to get her take on it. I think I am going to make a purchase of this one. It is classy, elegant and timeless.

Providence Perfume Company proves once again why they are one of my favorite houses. Moss Gown is a beautiful soft chypre with woody and leathery overtones. Sillage is moderate, as is typical with natural perfumes, but the longevity is 6-7 hours--pretty good for any fragrance nowadays, natural or otherwise. This fragrance begs for crisp fall days and is perfect for spraying a cashmere shawl on chilly autumn nights. Warm, cozy and sexy, it got a big thumbs up from my husband, always a plus. Well done, Charna Ethier!

A beautiful and uplifting perfume from Providence Perfume Co. Moss Gown, as the name suggests, is loaded with moss, yet I wouldn't classify it as a chypre. It doesn't use labdanum or bergamot. Nor does it feel like a chypre. It feels like a scent from one of Hayao Miyazaki's movies. Full of color and joyful, with much personality and charisma. A magical world surrounds me whenever I spray this perfume. Moss is the star here, but it doesn't feel bitter, abrasive, or overly inky, as this material can come across oftentimes when used in high amounts. It's velvety, like a blanket wrapping you in its comforting embrace. There are some soft spices in the opening and a yellow, sweet mimosa flower in the heart. Chamomile is present, instilling a sense of tranquility. Soft cedarwood appears in the base, but more apparent is the sandalwood that lends its creamy and buttery quality to the dry-down, making the experience that much more comforting. Besides feeling like part of a fairy tale, it is also quite debonair being appropriate for dressed-up situations. It won't come across as intrusive to the wearer or the surroundings but wraps tightly around you like a scarf, delighting the senses and lifting your mood. It certainly lifts my mood. I smell this perfume on my wrist and I am little again, standing in my grandfather's backyard vegetable garden in the heat of an August afternoon. The smell of the hot sandy soil mixes with the sunflowers and goldenrod in the very back of his garden patch, next to his old sawdusty garage, which somehow traps just a touch of the humidity the afternoon sun has otherwise baked out of the air. The smell of tall dry grasses and chamomile roasting in the hot sun lingers like a spell over everything, and inside, the coffee grounds on my grandmother's stove add their dry-bitter aroma to the mix. For me, this is practically sacred ground, the scent of languid summers spent watching my grandfather hover over his vegetable harvest (and my grandmother turning it all into wonderful dinners). It took me a few tries to come around to this perfume, but it has definitely grown on me; the bitterness beguiles me. I will say it is utterly unique, I've met nothing else like it, and I will enjoy it to the last drop.

Do you want to smell like an oakmoss-sunflower-rose-boronia femme fatal? Then this was made for you!!! I want to love this one, bc I love green woody earthy scents, but this one doesn't work for me. Maybe it's my chemistry, or preference, but I find it to be way too busy and dusty. It smells powdery, and very much like Tibetan incense. Herbal in a bitter way, and floral in a powdery way, which is the antithesis of what I expect from anyplace moss would grow! Moss loves wet/dark woods, invoking dew and petrichor, but alas, cedarmoss isn't a true moss, it's a lichen! And lichen can survive on the surface of a rock, in full California sun! I saw moss, and expected a damp forrest floor, not flowers, and especially not sunflowers! Plus I prefer my rose, narcissus, mimosa, and lilacs to be dewy & wet, not dried & powdery, which imo turns them into a sickly-sweet and semi bitter potpourri. If you've ever sniffed a fresh cut sunflower, this definitely has that, but I don't want sunflowers with my mossy gown! lol I feel this would be more aptly named Sultry Sunflower or Lichen Lace. This scent does feel very mature & elegant, so 'gown' is fitting.The violet leaf turns dusty musty on me! I'm not picking up any cedar, just boronia, dark sandalwood, and a lot of leathery spicy lichen (cedarmoss).

I collect chypres and I can't see how this is a chypre? There is no bergamot, labdanum or oakmoss that I can smell. The opening does have a brightness and the mix of herbal notes does add lots of green mossiness, but unfortunately this ends up very sour with a strong note of dill weed. In the end that is all I can smell; dill weed. There has to be a lot of sandalwood in this and the dill pickle type. I would call this a mossy, herbal green, sandalwood perfume and for me, sadly, I had to wash it off.

this opens very mossy, green and a little dank but still much brighter than vintage mossy scents. something in here goes quite odd on me though. i think maybe it's chamomile. it just doesn't work for me unfortunately...it seems to almost take over everything.

I ordered about 6 bottles from Providence Perfume Company, because they carry those 7.5 ml spray bottles that are cute, boxed, capped, and (relatively) reasonably priced. I swapped or gave away almost all of them. Moss Gown is the last one standing. All of PPC's perfumes smell good, but they don't last long on me and don't really DO anything. I don't feel like I am wearing perfume, I feel like I am wearing a fabulously scented candle, and for my uses, I feel like PPC's scents would function better in burning wax than on skin. It's not a slam, I just like my perfumes to have a life of their own, not just radiate topnotes and then fade away. Lots of niches perfumes are just so unbearably linear. I expect that sort of thing from, say, Demeter, they are pretty up front about that sort of thing, but I get annoyed when niche companies offer up perfumes that cost 3 or 4 dollars a ml (and beyond) and then they don't even act like perfume. Anyway, rant over. Here's the Moss Gown review: My favorite perfume in the world is Aromatics Elixir, and several Fragranticans suggested to me this perfume, (one even sent me a manufacturer's sample--I love this community!) MG is like AE in its feel and mood, that's for sure. This is so intensely herbal, and strong, it's like a brick wall, and such unusual notes too, chamomile, narcissus, sunflower, I feel like I smell some basil and sage in here too, this perfume is like a tincture of wild flowers and herbs. The herbal tincture eventually gives way to a bit of white florals in the heart, and the base has a bit of cedar and maybe a hint of sandalwood (I do not detect oakmoss in here) but that sweet, dense herbal character never goes away. MG is extremely natural in feel, lasts about 4 to 5 hours on me. I do agree that lovers of AE should check this out.

For a natural perfume, this has some serious gusto. As a middle aged semi-metrosexual male, I'd wear this without hesitation. I'd definitely consider it unisex, if we must subscribe to male/female stereotypes in perfumery (which the best of us do not). I knew nothing about this other than that it was natural. Put just barely two sprays on a test strip and was almost instantly, surprisingly, blasted with a definite chypre, my nose getting that nature-y, moss with even the slightest hint of a mint. An hour later and it's still making itself known, and even moving into other rooms, sneaking around and surprising me here and there. Serious potency for a natural, which is welcome. Transitions into a terrific floral without going all-out flower-bed girlie. Cheers on this, my first sample from this house, great stuff.

So beautiful it stopped me dead in my tracks! I was in a rush out the door, put it on as my finishing touch, and dashed off. I thought it smelled great, but within minutes I had to sit in amazement and analyse how gorgeous the smell. Elegant, delicate . . . it smells like fresh hay (I think from the chamomile) strewn over moss. Natural, slightly sweet, and similar to the smell of dried flowers. But, like dried flowers in a heavenly fantasy that smell like a dream scent. A little powdery, and very natural. FB on its way!

I did not like the initial application of this. There were so many different smells upfront that seemed they were fighting for attention. I waited a little bit, and wow! The scent changed to this mossy greenery. Soft and aromatic. I get wood and the moss, plus some thing sweet on dry down. This one was a true surprise. I really like it.

Not a fan, sorry. I thought I would like it, I am a fan of moss scent but this one was a bit much. Sillage is powerful. Longevity is strong also.

Gosh, this sounds gorgeous. I'm going to need to try this soon!
