Chaps Musk

Good old Fragrantica listed this cologne without me even knowing about it and I am happy. This was my first introduction to the world of colognes and thankfully I remember how it smelled... thank you dad. My brother was also responsible for introducing me to the world of colognes and that story will be told in another review (Obsession). The year was 1987 and as a kid living with my parents I always saw this cologne on a shelf next to the bathroom. The dark glass with the silver top and the longhorn bull logo on it just got burned to my memory. I remember putting my finger on top of the opened bottle, flipping it upside down, letting it wet my finger, flipping it back up and tapping both sides of my neck. I had no clue how to put on this cologne but I felt like a bad ass because I felt my dad was a bad ass because he wore it. It was a dark and soft spicy brew but the musk was the center of attention. The sweetness was just right and I believe that was the anise at play. Going to elementary school smelling musky I believe was strange looking back now but I was kid haha. The scent was strong and it probably be compared to aftershave in todays world. Since it was discontinued long ago it seems like like it was not popular at all but I do not mind that. Chaps was once the dark horse of the Polo brand if anything comes close it has to be its older brother Original Polo for men. Nostalgia has hit me hard during this review and my score for this review is solely based on my fond memories of my childhood. Scents can play a big role in many of our memories and when my family all once lived under one roof the smell of Chaps, Gucci Nobile, and Obsession were there for the ride. This is where it all began and I thank the community I found on Fragrantica for letting me share my reviews over the years. We may have occasional disagreements but we all share the same passion when it comes to talking about scents. Thank you dad for everything you thought me in life...this is for you. 10 out of 10

I cannot believe that no one else has reviewed this. This was one of my signature scents back in the late 80s and early 90s. It had a great spicey, amberness to it that I thought was excellent considering my lack of funds for anything expensive. Nowadays, I can spend a great deal more but I would happily go back to this as an everyday, on-the-farm scent if I had to. Yes, I live on a farm but everyone appreciates a nice scent when you are surrounded by animals.

1985 - Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, Rocky IV, St. Elmo's Fire, Brewster's Millions, Goonies, Real Genius, Clue and Chaps Musk. Chaps Musk reminds me of Christmas and a beautiful time period in my youth. Scent: 9.5 Projection: 9 Longevity: 8 Value: 9.5 1985 - where did you go?

just picked up a vintage bottle , really great stuff , worth hunting down if you can get it , they should have kept it in production

A little more subdued than the original Chaps, this one has very pleasant fresh and green top and mid notes (notably geranium) along with some of the same notes as the original Chaps --- anise, honey and spices. The base is musk blended with sandalwood, patchouli and amber, and the overall composition is quite pleasant. It's not as bracingly green as Monsieur Houbigant Musk, nor as spicy as Royall Muske, but it has enough other ingredients balancing the musk to be interesting. On my skin it has medium longevity, and it projects nicely without being overpowering.
