Rance “Triomphe”... how to explain? Yes, it has many of the same notes as Shalimar and in the broad sense of ‘type,’ if you like Shalimar you like this type. But it has a feel of Diptyqie’s “Messe de Minuit,” and if you even appreciate MdM (without wearing it) you are going to LOVE Triomphe. Triomphe is the warmed, citrus-infused, subtle MdM. It’s Shalimar if it were soft, a bit more floral, and a lot more dry/resin-y. Triomphe is what you wear to bed, when you’re tired, when you’re racing out and want to smell wonderful in a very subtle way. It is soft, the sillage drops down quickly, and though you’ll catch subtle hits of resin and spice in dry lemon/orange all day, you could be in a car with others and no one would know beyond those near you having an undefinable sense that the car smells good, and does someone have a book? I’ve done something I almost never do - burned through 1/3 a bottle in a few months. This is HG material.

Just came here to say the reformulation smells nothing like the original, not even a little bit, from the top through the dry-down to the base. I thought I had gotten scammed, since it smelled so generic, like walking around the makeup counters at the mall, but I came to find out through checkfresh and Rance's site itself that I did indeed receive the reformulation. So sad! The original is incredible. I hope someone can comment if they find something similar.

#1782 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Got this decant from scentsplit.com. My second go round with Rance 1795. I loved “Sharisme Incense” and this one is a nice scent, though it’s a bit to the shower gel/shaving cream side. A lot of notes here. But everything is pretty much standard until you toss in the clary sage and tarragon which add a sweet herbal vibe that’s soft and pleasing. That’s how I’d characterize this scent overall. Not the least aggressive. Safe for any environment, but not sure how much notice it will draw, if any, as you’ll smell like you just toweled off after your morning shave and shower. Which is not a bad way to smell. I just don’t think anyone will ask, "What’s that you’re wearing?” Moderate performer. Reasonably priced, though there are a many scents under $40 that I’d say perform as well if not better, like pretty much every Rayhaan and Khadlaj, that are just as likable, and that I already own. So nice scent, but not remarkable in any way, and so probably not a buy for me. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Guess that mine is pre reformulation, the notes here doesn ́t add up to what I ́m getting. I have pepper and citrus as the most prominent notes, leather, vetiver, incense, patchouli and sage as the second most prominent and it ́s somewhat animalic too. To bad it does ́t have better longevity.

I found this frag. so spicy and a bit woody and floral, and perhaps leather? Can't feel any citrus. Reminds me of Cajuput oil (kind of eucalyptus oil).

The least used bottle in my collection, Triomphe is very retro and very mature oriented. The only two clean and vibrant notes for me are Sage and Benzoin. All other elements are extremely difficult to measure. So it is sage and benzoin in the centre and a group of zesty indolent undertones creating a retrospective of post-WWII large European halls full of well-mannered older folks wearing classy clothes and speaking formal and pedestrian language. I personally wear this poncey scent while developing role models and characters who were born in the first half of XX century. It absolutely has nothing to do with prior eras, not at all Napoleon. Not sexy at all, it also may be appropriate for formal events or classical concerts if you're not seducing anyone but interested to pay your obeisance to oldsters. I received this as a complimentary sample and didn't realise that it was marketed to men, so my first thought was that it was a very masculine scent. My second thought was that it seems quite floral in the beginning, but I haven't been able to figure out what I was actually smelling since there are no florals... As it opens up, more prominent green and woody notes come through and it becomes a little more dry. It doesn't suit me at all, so I've given the sample to my partner - I think he may enjoy it.

This used to be one of my favorite fragrances, but the new formulation is drastically different – and unfortunately, not for the better. The scent has been transformed into something generic and uninspiring compared to its original captivating essence. 😔

You will laugh when you find out how we met. I put on me Ball d’Afrique in a Byredo corner and followed my way in a shop. Occasionally I found myself in front of new smell of Marc Jacobs or something and there were two consultants right near the corner. One of them just said ” I can smell Ball d’Afrique on you”. “Great”-said I. “I appreciate that you also like it”. And there she said “Not at all. Do you mind if I show you something more interesting”? There we were. In front of Rance corner. Never heard about. The bottles are too patterned and figured. Okay... ”Here it is” – she said and showed me Triomphe. ”But the problem is that it is an old version. We have only few bottles left. The new one smells absolutely different”. And gives me the blotter with the new version. Yeeeeah... No vetiver at all but how earthy and peppery at the same time. Light but noticeable. Comforting. Expensive. I feel even some leather notes. Some “church” accords. Wow. Of course, I bought the bottle later on. But I am so sorry that this perfumes composition has been changed. If you find an old one (before 2015 I guess) be sure that you are a lucky one.

The difference between the original 2009 and the new 2015 fragrance is remarkable--they are two totally difference creations. The original 2009-2014 was a lovely cedar with no sharp or chemical edges that dried down to a floral incense musk and smelled divine. The new 2015 version is a very ho-hum department store "cedar" laden with ISO E-Super and a host of other gimmicky aromachemicals absolutely not worth the price it goes for. The new box details a composition including "adrenalenic spices" and an "amber heart," while the previous version detailed roses, jasmine, wisteria, iris, incense, pepper, cedar, etc. One can't help but feel like one has been cheated out of $150, as it smells very cheap, like something you could get for $20 at the drug store. Even where reformulations are noticeable, I don't typically get annoyed by them, but this is headache inducingly bad--Rancé owes loyal customers an explanation and an apology. A very mediocre scent for a ridiculous price.

I never heard of Rance 1795 before, but thanks Fragrantica for expanding my knowledge. I have an opportunity to sample this today. To me, it starts out very floral (neroli'ish) fresh and clean like many modern day fragrances. No spicy pepper nor anything incensey for me. There is a noticeable trace of iris, and it's really nice and soft. But it quickly becomes really musky with a small amount of cedary wood. It's quite soft andgentle for men's fragrance. It's very natural smelling and well crafted. Even though, I feel like the base is too animalic musky for me. It's still a great fragrance and lasts a good time.

opens woody, a little bit of leather & sweat, warm spices & wood, reminds me of Tom of Finland by ELDO if this was a champagne it would be a brut, to me it's dry and not too sweet after an hour i smell what i thought was sandalwood and tobacco ... more about the blend than individual notes 4-5 sprays medium projection several hours

Excellent. This one actually reminds me of two fragrances: Creed's Spice and Wood, and Lalique Equus. Its woody, dry, spicy, citric with rough edges. Once the benzoin fades off, it becomes smoother and smoother. A great one.

I've been looking for a comfortable cedar-smelling fragrance for a long time.—this may be it!

A more luxurious and quality sauvage imo.

Very woody fragrance. Feel so peaceful.
