Casbah

This is a review of the OG white label bottle. Disclaimer: This has been my signature for a decade now. And when i say signature, i don't mean a dumb reach, but instead the only scent i choose to wear when i want to "present" how i smell in formal events. If you watched the Netflix show "Dark", you would agree that this is the scent Noah would have been wearing when he was a priest. But of course, I'm not Noah :) My bottle (like all my other bottles) has been kept in a dark closet for 10 years now, away from heat and humidity. Wearing this scent is like making a pact with the devil. The devil in this case is an ashy incense drydown that endures showers, scrubbing after scrubbing after scrubbing, and you will still smell traces of it. You will need to make big decisions before committing to wear it as your scent of the day/night, because it's a long term contract. I've been in this hobby for 20 years now and i haven't encountered a scent that sticks and lingers on the skin for that long, period. And the 10 year maceration of my bottle probably made it even stronger. It's gothic, grey and dark. It will wear your soul, not just your skin. So, tread lightly. The opening greets you with a vivid explosion of herbal angelica and black pepper, which are quickly joined by a 3D dry tobacco accord. The tobacco smells "alive", as if it's a living entity slowly crawling on the skin. Underneath the top notes sits a very dark, bitter and almost animalic vetiver accord. I honestly haven't caught up on the animalic facets until after countless wearings. But of course, the director of the show is a cold ashy smoky frankincense. This is the main character. This is the devil you need to make a pact with. The one that overcomes showers and scrubbing after scrubbing after scrubbing after scrubbing after scrubbing. With that said, even if you love incense, i actually strongly advice not to blind buy this, because this might not actually be the incense you have in mind. Crazy to say right? Well let me explain. This is not your typical churchy incense. The frankincense here doesn't smell like the actual ceremony of burning frankincense, but rather the somber smell of the aftermath ashes that lingers till the next day after the ceremony. If you burn real frankincense resins at home like i do, you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. And by the way, despite its darkness, this is actually hands down my most complimented scent. What can i say, we're a match made in heaven/hell :) A masterfully blended dark magic in a bottle.

I am in AWE. I received my bottle and sprayed some on my wrist. I thought: "meh" and went on with my things. I would go back every 20 minutes and it got better but I still thought I had made a mistake by blind buying. HOWEVER, when I went back to it feeling disappointed, I decided to spray twice under my tshirt (close to my neck) so that I could get whiffs every time I would move and... OH LORD OF THE PERFUMES, I got bewitched. For hours and hours this scent exuded the best of several realms: On one hand the key to its wonderful aroma is the strong angelica note supported by classy incense and something nutty or ambery I cannot put my fingers on. It is the same angelica we find in say French Lover but here it is long lasting and stronger and the mix with warm counterparts makes it stand out in a glorious way. People here mention nutmeg and spices and they are definitely there but all the time in a supporting role, not letting the angelica go bitter...very well managed. Don't expect a spice bomb, everything is handled in a classy way. This is GREEN to me in a warm way as opposed to general green fresh and it works so well... it lasts for hours and hours with the incense getting more prominent until the angelica gets subtler and a gorgeous drydown of tobacco and something very earthy make it for a grand finale. I am truly shocked I found it dull on my wrist. Please folks give it a proper wearing as I did. This is a wonderful incense, 100% unisex, very different in its development from my beloved Avignon (Casbah is greener, warmer and exotic... nothing churchy here nor formal) and definitely SEXIER than all the incenses I have sampled. The warm/cold interplay I've mentioned is sublime, it is easy to wear and so well blended... Gorgeous!!

Cool, dry, classy incense - much, much lighter on the spices and honey/sweet notes than I was expecting, but none the worse for that. In the same ballpark as Comme des Garcons Kyoto, for instance, but a little more aloof and less rounded than that or the other CDG incense series; its other end drifts towards L'Artisan Dzonghkha territory, but with much less smoke and none of the "dusty old books" smell of Dzonghkha. It absolutely isn't as warm or sweet or delicious as Tauer Air du Desert Marocain: they are two completely different routes towards the same 'destination' of a delicious North African/Arab market smell. It's a particularly woody joss-stick sort of incense - nothing cloying, there are no sickly notes of fake-jasmine or fake-floral anything - but it may not be to everyone's taste. There's some definite angelica greennness in there too, a note of something almost green-grassy. I breathed a sigh of relief on trying my discounted blind-buy FB that it really did work for me, but skin chemistry *might* make this go rank on some and if you're ambivalent about incense you should certainly try out on skin before committing to this one. Projection's not huge, but it does waft about a bit (and got me some spontaneous compliments); longevity is ASTONISHING, lasting full day as skin scent even beyond (like into next morning) on textiles. So if you want a good-value, distinctive, high-class incense, consider giving this one a chance. To my mind Casbah is absolutely unisex, but some may find it too butch; it's not really one to wear with a floaty girly dress, for sure - though it could definitely set off something drop-dead sexy, on any gender.

CdG Incense Avignon is the fragrance that really pulled me deep into the world of perfumery, so it's natural for me to have a strong attraction to incense fragrances. I've been looking for an incense scent that would outweigh my first love, which I nowadays find too synthetic and linear. So far the best ones have been Heeley's Cardinal and this one - Piguet's Casbah. Cardinal is almost identical to Incense Avignon (but more nuanced, more natural), whereas Casbah is really one of it's kind and it's not trying to be like Avignon or any other scent I've tried so far. Casbah is unique. It's smoky, spicy, deep and it has "grown up" or somehow vintage feel to it. On my skin it feels enigmatic and sensual. Dry down is mellow and relaxing with the spiciness of nutmeg still keeping you awake. In my imaginary world there's a passionate, solitaire, modern and mysterious woman in the 1920s wearing a black men's suit, travelling to faraway countries, flirting with beautiful girls and boys and sneaking into empty catholic churches after a mass to contemplate in solitude. The imaginary woman smells like Casbah. I could also imagine Anna Calvi or Michelle Gurevich wearing this perfume. I believe that Germaine Cellier, who created the most iconic Piguet perfumes, would have appreciated this one. I am falling deeply in love with Casbah. After the honeymoon phase ends and my sample is gone, we'll see if this is the one I've been looking for.

The first time I've tried this fragrance it was late August, and I was hesitant to apply it to my skin, so I tested it on paper instead. It immediately struck me with its powerful, sacred aura. Casbah takes me to an ancient church, evoking a sense of timelessness and reverence, a place lost in the distant past, far removed from modern times. It projects intensely, like an incense that’s not just for any ordinary mass but one held for an extraordinarily significant event. The incense in ths is mineral-like and slightly cold, reminiscent of the weathered stone walls of old churches. It’s a scent that demands attention. On my skin, it’s even more striking. At first, a strong smoky element unsettles me, hinting at burnt woods, but as it develops, the overwhelming pepper intensity starts to mellow out, coming off as pure subtle freshness. Despite its initial, heady blast, the fragrance evolves into something beautifully complex and mesmerizing, with a delicate hint of enveloping tobacco that adds warmth and depth to the composition. It lingers for hours, so much so that 24 hours later, even after a shower, I can still detect a faint trace on my wrist. The longevity is unmatched.

This stuff is 🔥🔥 Casbah is one fine fume for those who enjoy traditional incense with a touch of spice. It's darkish, but more "midnight mass" dark than "crypt" dark, as someone described it. Definitely shares some DNA with the likes of Avignon, Full Incense and Cardinal -- but with something different that for me elevates it to something even better. The angelica and tobacco really richen the feel of casbah, but without getting in the way of the incense. And then there is the nutmeg -- a favorite note of mine during the cooler months. The combination with incense hints at darker, purified Azzaro Visit, though in a much more formal structure. I can easily imagine rocking Visit during a fall day, and then layering this beauty over its waning traces, for a dressed up night out. This will get worn. And enjoyed. Edit: This is not only wonderful on its own, it layers amazingly. Tried it with DSquared Potion the other day, to double down on the angelica, and it was positively addictive. Today, I tried it with Sauvage Parfum, and the two just interlocked as though they are one fantastic and uplifting fragrance.

I had been on a quest to find the ideal incense scent for me and... I think I have found it, in Casbah. Casbah has the perfect balance of earthiness, tobacco and of course incense. The opening of this fragrance hits you with a good dose of nutmeg and pepper setting this spicy damp tone to fully accentuate the incense. Once the mid notes kick in the tobacco and incense lift this perfume to the heights of vaulted ceilings (Casbah's incense smells like a real church incense). The scent is rounded out with a rich vetiver and cedar combo that keeps the scent of incense crisp and long lasting. This is a classy fragrance that works well on either sex. Casbah is perfect for fall and winter. This is a going out scent that needs cold air to play to it's full strength (think fall/winter nights). Casbah is well blended and crafted and is very long lasting. Casbah ticks all the boxes for me and I cannot recommend it enough, full bottle worthy! Give Casbah a few sprays on a crisp cool night when you feel contemplative or you wish to coolly or modestly give off an inkling of mystery or sophistication.

If you're expecting something in the vein of Avignon, you might be very surprised by this. Yes, it's a beautiful, finely crafted, strong incense- but this is not bright, fresh-from-the-censer stuff. It has an extra dimension of depth and darkness and dankness that lift it- for me- far above Avignon, or I should really say below-- it's the smell of a cathedral crypt. It has that extraordinary mustiness of 800 years of incense smoke soaked into cold stone walls. It's an extremely evocative scent that will bring you right into the catacombs. I absolutely adore it. The first impression is sweet frankincense mingled with bone-dry angelica and nutmeg- the kind that's been left on a shelf for a few decades. Next there's orris, myrrh, dessicated cedar shavings. There's absolutely no warmth in the drydown, but the extremely dry, macabre character stays intact. Projection is powerful too- I only need one spray to give people around me the sense of a walking cathedral.

I had a tester of this (red and white label) and I sold it because it was too potent at the time and smelled of weed but it smelled great but then it made me concious that people would think I am a pot head. A few years down the line I couldn't get it out of my memory and purchased a bottle. The label had changed to a red/black. Sadly, I didn't get the incense and all I got was green angelica and vetiver which turned my stomach so I had to get rid of it. I received my bottle today and lo and behold, it is exactly like the one above in the picture! The tester was still a bit stronger as I clearly remember but this is the same glorious juice I had encountered so many years ago. The incense kick in it makes it bearable and somewhat smoky. It is quite green but very much wearable and there's a certain refreshing quality about it which I find very irresistible, different and welcoming. I feel I have reset my nose and re-engaged with nature.

Casbah starts very spicy detected from the beginning the effect of pepper accompanied by the note of angelica and attached to a background of incense (my favorite part) .Podría here seem heavy, but not is an entry that gives off a light and exquisite aura completely away (which pleased me) effect: inside cathedral, with which I always associate floor with incense as a fragrance dominant note. According evolves it becomes drier and smoked, perhaps due to the effect of atalcado iris attached to snuff engulfing casbah under a very exotic aura and get transport me to a quiet, meditative place like the inside of a full marble columns Arab house, horseshoe arches, carved wooden paneling and fine carpets colorful looking at a clear blue sky. The balsamic and very durable drying softens and tempers the incense with the warmth of a loving hug goodbye invites back again to apply yourself to feel this beautiful fragrance. Rating: 7.5

Angelic(a)? Odd, it's weird how some scents come across.......was it my mood, nose, skin chemistry that night? The first time I tried Casbah was after spraying it with the nozzle close to my skin. I was turned off because before I fell asleep all I detected was a dark smokiness. It took over a week before I tried again but applied a mist and more over my body then walked out into the cool and breezy late afternoon. Wow, so much better this time, I am not familiar with Angelica root but if it's that sweet scent that is intertwined with incense then I really love it. Great projection and still going strong after 5 and one half hours. Great unisex I believe, the incense here is definitely house of worship strength so that might turn off some ladies but Angelica root tames the beast. Good name for this product, my first Piguet purchase, setting the bar rather high for the rest of the line.

It's not like a funeral. It's not like a church. It's not melancholic. To me it's sweet and warm and enchanting. Specially after couple hours. At first I thought "Oh No. Frankincense punch in the face! This is gonna be like that Armani prive I couldn't wear Bois d'encens". But then it gets sweeter and mellower. And I love it. It's like you meet an uptight person you think oh no! We can't get along! Then discover slowly they're warm and sweet and quite unique. It's clear, calm, and kind. Just like I wish I could be. It is wearable day and night, it's winter time now, haven't tried summer yet. I feel it is creamy incense. Not too masculine or edgy. The musk takes off the edge I think. On me it gets more musky as time passes but the incense doesn't go away either. I think this will be my go to perfume.

I love incense and oriental perfumes. I can't believe that all of the times I've asked for incense frag recs this never once came up - it's hands down the best incense perfume I've experienced. (Note :I haven't ever tried Norma Kamali and given my age and it's rarity it seems unlikely that I will before I shuffle off this mortal coil) It's beautiful. I don't find it exclusively male - I'm female and feel great wearing it. It's longevity is amazing for a modern perfume. Sillage is moderate - but radiance is awesome. This will waft up to you all day off and on. I'm sure many would consider it a winter scent but it positively blooms with heat for me - it seems to thrive in high temperatures. I don't buy many full bottles these days - but I'll be buying Casbah as soon as this decant is gone.

It took me ages before buying. I started this passion on fragrances looking for something that I always liked: Incense. Went through La Liturgie, V by Clive Christian, Samharam, Epic... and this one, at last. I have tried it many times and eventually bought a full bottle. Incense lovers will definitely like it but incense is not overruling other main players such as spices and Angelica, the former making it dry and warming it up, the latter making it green and fresh. As a result you have a very well balanced perfume that takes you to a journey where either incense or the other characters play the scene . Be careful with sprays as projection and silllage are strong. This easily fills a room. Longevity is outstanding, too, more than 12 hours. Enjoy this

I bought casbah, I tested it for a couple of weeks, it's not exactly what I was looking for but it comes a little closer, the smell is very natural and of very high quality, I do not think there is real incense but the mixture of notes and spices and herbs with a touch of smoke from a feeling of incense used in the Catholic church but not 100% feel particularly strong nutmeg and angelica. it is not bitter or so green as it is described almost by everyone for me it is a little green and a bit amber ... it is sweet enough not dry, when it dries out it smells stronger as a church incensor! now I want to try montale and avignon, I hope they are not the same thing as casbah just to not double the purchase! in the whole casbah is a wonderful scent!

Love this! I got a whole stack of sample when I bought Zazen and this was part of the pack. It literally smells like ginger beer, the real spicy kind. It’s the closest thing to a true ginger solinote I’ve found thus far and I know I’ll probably pick up a full bottle of this at some point. The perfume was incredibly long lasting and stayed relatively linear throughout the perfume although the initial ginger spice did become slightly smokier into the drydown. I liked that though because I absolutely loved the opening. I’ve been searching for an incense fragrance as well and found this by chance. I really want to purchase a bottle although that seems like it may be harder than I thought. 9/10

Originally the qasba (Arabic: قصبة, Qaṣba, vulgarized in casba or kasbah (from the Arabic qaṣaba, "citadel", "fortress"), was a construction (usually fortress or citadel) of an Arab city. Distant and mystical atmospheres, religious rites and Arabian traditions Intense and warm, these notes are perfect for traveling the mind in the East, the incense here is as strong as the name of the perfume, dominating like in a cathedral on a sultry day summer, that quiet, that refreshment given by the coolness of the interior, is emphasized by the angelica, black pepper and cypress as the liturgical images that are the background, infusing that shiver, that anguish typical of the churches of Rome.

Looking a lot for a churchy incense parfume, intense and with a long longevity. Casbah looks like this. It is really dried like the incense smoke in the churches. I’ve also tested Cardinal but for me it is not persistent enough. About Casbah at the moment I would only prefer there was less black pepper / nutmeg. Like incense this perfume can be not tollerable by other people around you...For dried churchy incense’s real lovers 10 hours after 3 moderate sprays made in the morning the perfume is still here and intense!! I smell incense but mostly cedar is coming up and the spices have gone down. Very nice perfume, with interesting and long evolution. Spiritually intellectual!!

This fragrance is one where seeing Fragrantica's note list helped me like and understand it better. I smell incense and angelica with little shakes of the pepper and nutmeg drifting over the duet. The vetiver is of the sweet, almost floral type; if there is any peep from the tobacco or cedar, the orris smooths it over. After the first few hours, the incense settles in for a long visit with the angelica and vetiver quietly sweetening the smoke. Not being insistent about who wears which perfume, I still would add that I find it masculine but restrained and formal enough to fit on either the masculine or the feminine shelf. *P.S. My bottle has the black label.*

It definitely exhudes a manly olfactive signature. Reminds me the Rocabar by Hermes vibe, with slighlty different notes and approach in terms of geolocalisation, if this means something. This was a blind buy for me, and it confirmed what i expected after those reviews and notes listed. Very happy because i didn't own such a fragrance in my collection, it's very unique for me. Longevity and sillage are great too, wich is a good thing. It is much powerfull than CDG Avignon for example, which is shockingly faint to me. Here you have something good but that lasts too. Overall... 8/10

What everyone wrote about Casbah is true, it is all that exactly. It is woody and earthy, uniquely Piguet too. According to Joe Casbah the president of Robert Piguet Parfum back in 2012 interview, Casbah contains 27 type of incense and Casbah took the longest to develop out of the 5 nouvelle collection, inspired by the Moroccan bazaar and burning tobacco. There’s nothing floral in it, I must agree that this is not for everyone, but it could be addictive. Currently I am wearing this on my right arm, and I have baghari on my left. I am in love ♥️.

@FreddyK i guess it depends regarding the crowd pleaser thing:) This fragrance is hands down my most complimented, to the point where i know if i want to impress at a formal event... i don't even question wearing anything else. Besides the casual compliments, i had wives and mothers make an example of me to their husbands and sons lol: " See?! Now why can't you smell like -insert my name here- ? See how good his perfume smells?!!! " (while gushing)

Casbah takes me to a mediterranean monastery. It’s a hot day and someone has just swept the stone floor with a wicker broom. This produces a finely milled cloud of frankincense, myrrh, angelica root and other dry herbs that stick to my skin. An hour later the scent melts into a warm and sweet wood. Hours later it transforms into iris and incense. By the end of that day, I rush back to the store and buy a (black label) bottle.

If I have to have only one perfume in this genre, Casbah would be it! This is burning, dry, woody, frankincense; not at all like Full Incense, or Cardinal, which smell like fresh olibanum. I'm not sure if just me, but I used to pick much more angelica from an old bottle than the new one. Longevity: ETERNAL! 2-3 sprays on my hand, 72 hours later, 3 showers, and many, many hand washings and I can still smell it!

I tested this beauty a few days ago and can't stop thinking about it! The SA saw me so enamored she sprayed some in a decant for me to bring home :D A perfect incense, strong and unapologetic, with great sillage and longevity: I could still smell it after 12 hours at least. I'll definitely buy it in 2018 and I think it's a 100% safe blind buy for anyone who loves incense and Oriental perfumes.

It's my first time that I'm wearing this perfume and I can say that it is a nice fragrance. A balsamic and woody- spicy one with fantastic longevity and projection. I like to wear it in cold seasons rather than Summer. I think I keep it until Fall and then I will start wearing it and then I can tell my opinion more accurate. All in all I can smell Pepper, Cedar, Vetiver and Tobacco the most.

I’m in church...a cavernous cathedral that echoes every sound. Wisps of incense caress my bare skin. It’s warm. The air is dense. Cedarwood lighting sticks smolder beside glowing amber votives at the alter. A spicy note dances on my tongue. I want to pray. I want a hookah & some nutmeg tobacco. I want to feel this intoxicating scent now & forever, world without end, amen.

Sidesteps the cliches of exotic travel fragrances while simultaneously capturing their finest qualities. Considerably more depth than the note composition indicates. Decent longevity and potency that doesn't kick out too far. Evocative without being derivative. Spiritual without being "churchy". Straight down-the-line unisex. Brilliant.

Hated it at first sniff -- acrid, dry lovage smell. Tried again after a month and liked it -- some warmth and a few round edges to be found. Wore it to work and loved it -- puts me in a focused mood. Full-bottle-worthy precious weird beauty. My colleague loves it and calls it "the citrus one." The most unique scent I own.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise - a refined, minimalistic Christmas (for a change!). I have no idea why it had to be named Casbah, but all I am visualizing is a cold, elegant incense flanked by angelica and woody notes. The pepper and spices are left in the background not to disturb this perfect medieval austerity. Lovely!

Powdered church incense spread across hotly burning charcoal. The incense slowly diffuses and mixes with the charcoal smoke and envelops you, staying with you for the entire day and then some. Lovely olfactory experience, very nostalgic for those of us who've attended mass in our youths. Best suited for cold weather.

This will be my next purchase. I bought some Avignon by CdG but this blows it out of the water. Amazing scent but extremely heavy on the frankincense and will definitely not be everyone's cup of tea. However if you want to smell like a funeral on an Autumn day (I do!!) then this is the one for you.

Stunning! Tried this today for the first time. We are having a gentle shower from the monsoon. Took a dip in the pool and Casbah combined with the creosote smell that envelops the desert after a rain, has me in a relaxed stupor. I love this fragrance!

Is a wow incenses perfume. remember more a Gothic Church then Marrakech, but i love it. Very classic, very hard to find a similar notes. I think only is to expensive, Euro 168,00 it's to much when you can have Cardina or Full Incense for Euro 110,00

This is one of my all-time favorites. If you like spicy incense and woodsy, you can’t go wrong with this. Although you could classify this as unisex to masculine. I as a woman get compliments everywhere I go when I wear this. It’s sexy and bold.

Hi All, let me know, Robert Piguet replacement, if you know, let me know, I will reciprocate. I asked Robert Piguet Parfums if they were reissuing Casbah, ...they wrote back that they could, which means it's probably about quantity....

One of the best incense perfumes out there, smells really authentic , high quality incense like in a lot of top notch incense fragrances with a slight touch of gentleness and sweetness which makes it more appealing, highly recommended

I wish this would be produced again! One of the most entrancing smells ever! Edit; I see an April 30th availability date... Edit2; now it's end of July.. But I already obtained one almost full one viavia... It's delicious!!!

OMG I soooo want this fragrance. Out of my price range and my partner, well, he hates it. Such a shame as I can't think of one I desire more. Sigh...

Brave stuff! Full to the brim with spices, I thought I was going to love this one unconditionally but sadly I don't. It puts me in mind of a dry, sandy, beige colour landscape because of the association perhaps? I don't know why it kind of reminds me of sandpaper not the smell as such but it just creates a sensory, olfactory texture...if that's not too pretentious a comment? It's a pungent opening for me quite peppery which I usually like but not here as it's a little sneezey. The spices are hard and rough at first and as it dries down it starts to produce a really lovely incense vibe. I kinda love this fragrance but I couldn't wear it myself. Although this is a 100% straight down the middle unisex, I personally get a more of a feminine feel from it... like something a belly dancer would wear. It's certainly not because this is light or breezy it's pretty hardcore to be honest and far spicier and smokier than CDG series 3 Avignon to which I've seen some comparisons. My verdict is that this is a cracking fragrance...just not for me. I would recommend anyone who likes orientals or spicy, incense fragrances to try this one as it's very interesting.

My search for the very best incense fragrances led me to Casbah and away from CDG Avignon. Both are ancient church and cold smoke fragrances, but I find Casbah has more personality. There's a distinct green vein along with some iris and tobacco running through Casbah which I prefer over the CDG. Although both are pretty much photorealistic, I find the spiciness and extra facets of this better on my skin. It's also worth mentioning performance is pretty good on this. I wore it in the evening and when I woke up in the morning I could still smell it on my skin. CDG you have to spray much more to get it perform. Also, you get a 100ml of Casbah vs 50ml of CDG. I still like the CDG, but found it redundant so I sold it. All and all, this, and ELDO Rein, are probably my favorites niche incense fragrances.

This is a powerful fragrance; one drop, quite literally, lasted 6 hours and was strong enough to actually have a light sillage. First impression was that it reminded me quite a bit of Casbah by Florescent in its overall notes. Of course, the Florescent version is between and eau de cologne and an eau de toilette, so remains much lighter and fades much quicker. Robert Piquet has made a wonderful, lush, deep oriental that not only brings you the spicy notes of the casbah, but goes beyond and brings the wearer into the 1001 nights - a magic that takes you into the middle east, with a heavy, dense fragrance. While I quite enjoyed the experience that accompanied wearing this, I think my sample will be enough to wear several times, given the olfactory strength of this fragrance.
