Open Gold

The note breakdown from the manufacturer is incredibly vague, but this fragrance pops with jasmine, neroli, bergamot, amber, cinnamon, lavender and vanilla. Masculine fougere with some traces of the somewhat old-school OG Open, but with softer, brighter and more friendly approach. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking that this is a 5-note clubber or freshie - it is powerful, long-lasting (easily 8 hours with five sprays to the chest), complex and it evolves through several stages over its lifespan. When you hit the 45 minute mark, a light but bracing green herbal bitter note (artemisia or oakmoss perhaps) rises to give contrast to the jasmine, cinnamon and amber. At two hours, the sandalwood rises in the mix to impart a rich, creamy note. If you are looking for it, vetiver will pop its head up once in a while, though the likely 15 - 20 actual notes are so well blended that it and the others are hard to pick out. Some reviews compare this to the OG and is found wanting, but those reviews ignore the fact that this is a completely different scent that just happens to be marketed like a flanker for financial purposes. The OG is bitter, rough and magical, and I love it; but this is even better, in its own way. You really need to try this if you like fougeres or just beautifully composed, complex scents.

Agree with Novoscentologist about Open Golds characteristics, adding that I find it a fine alternative to the OdlRPL in its current, reformulated state. I’m getting good longevity and sillage from Open Gold, as with all the Roger & Gallets I own. It is a very benevolent, not the least dark or brooding, effervescent, citrusy, floral leather with a spicy touch and some elegance. It might not be that easy to pull off in everyday situations, maybe best suited for evenings and/or cooler weather. Could be good in a romantical context. My partner likes it very much. Not bad at all and, again for R&G Open series, much better than the humble price tag suggests.

This one is quite lovely, quite easy to wear as noted by other reviewers, and it has good potency and lasts all day. No single note really jumps out at me, but rather it is a nice blend of spice and florals with maybe the lightest hint of leather in the base. I also find it quite complex, giving off different notes throughout the day as it develops, and all of them are good. Nothing harsh or pointed in this formula, but just a pleasant and lovely, yet quite masculine, fragrance.

Roger & Gallet Open Gold... ...I do own all four OPEN fragrances and IMHO this one is the easiest to wear. I like them all but Open Gold is more versatile. It shares a core DNA with Oscar de la Renta pour Lui. Imagine a brighter, lighter and less complex OdlR pour Lui. It has good longevity and good sillage and can be worn anywhere without offending anyone.

This one is weak, but if you use enough sprays you get an excellent scent, sort of like a take on The Knize Ten. The dry down is closer to tkt than is the first hour or so, which reminds me of a feminine scent, perhaps Hypnotic Poison (a bit of almond with a hint of mint, and the sweetness is obvious). And there is no Barber Shop lavender here. At well under $20 this is certainly a good buy for those who want a tkt type of experience, but you might need to use 10 sprays or more.
