Unspoken

I discovered Roja Dove in 2007 and Enslaved was my signature fragrance, but I loved the house so much that in the early days I bought lots of little used 30ml bottles on ebay: Innuendo, Danger, Scandal, Reckless, two little bottles of Unspoken. All of this before 2011-ish. I rarely wore them, but I had a feeling I'd come back to them someday so I put them at the back of my perfume cupboard to macerate away. I have since used up two bottles of Enslaved and one bottle of Amber Extrait and I decided it was time to come back to these, and boy am I glad I stashed them! Unspoken is a spicy vintage chypre delight. It doesn't have Enslaved's smokey resinous langour, but they feel like cousins. Maybe the twin cousins from the Patty Duke show. Enslaved is serious, reads books in French, and enjoys a minuet. Unspoken is peppier, more cheerful. "Patty's into rock n roll, a hot dog makes her lose control! What a crazy pair!" (I feel like that's a joke only those of us raised on Nick At Nite would understand. Nevermind.) In any case, both perfumes have a lavender and citrus top, with ylang ylang, jasmine and rose at the center (Unspoken has neroli, Enslaved has orange blossom), and resins, labdanum, oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver and cedar at the base. They're related. But whereas Enslaved's character comes from it's base - and wafts around the room as an oriental, Unspoken leads from the middle. The florals are the star here - sweet and sunny - with a big side of warm spice. Anything dark is but a whisper to ground and sophisticate a scent which is in its soul a floral chypre in an old world style, but polished for a modern wearer. It's complex, but more linear than Enslaved. It's aldehydic, but in a vintage way - nothing near the crackling sparkliness of A Midsummer's Dream. And the vanilla spice keeps it from being boring. It's the yummy kind of spice. Like a bouquet of fresh flowers in a bakery. I'm sure there's cinnamon in there somewhere The iris adds a creaminess as well. It's delicious. (ps, Interestingly, I'm on hour 10 and all that's left of Unspoken in jasmine and ylang ylang; not a hint of spice or moss. Leading with the florals indeed!) I still prefer Enslaved, but I'm glad I have my two little bottles of this because I will definitely wear Unspoken more now. It works for every season and pairs nicely with a dress or a pair of jeans and cashmere top. I just wish it wasn't discontinued. Then I could spray it more liberally and without guilt.

Totally adore it! It is decadent, it is rich, it is expensive, it comes in a tacky bottle with Swarovski crystals on the top cap. It looks 80ies in terms of packaging. It reminds me of Joan Collins. BUT IT IS EFFING GORGEOUS!!! Iris, resins, labdanum, ylan-ylang, vanilla...it is sweet, ambery, musky, dense, juicy, a bit fruity and a lot floral, neroli and jasmin heavy. Just the best of ingredients, so the paper strip still smells as strong as when it got spritzed on and that was 5 days ago. The longevity is amazing and the quality of ingredients is undeniable. I really want this for my 40th birthday and I AM A MAN! 10/10 DESIRE! * my birthday now has passed: nobody bought it for me....do I have to do everything by myself? I still soooooo very much want it!

I rarely review perfume, because i am french and i think that i haven't enought words to describe. But for Unspoken, i must! It is absolutely wonderfull! Rich, luxourious quality fragrance! Unspoken is alive with iris in top note, sandalwood and rose. The sillage is very high and the longevity phenomenal! Can be wear in spring/summer but strong enought for all seasons! If you love Misia, Lipstick Rose and Love in black, Unspoken is all of that with a lot more! Gorgeous! It is my GEM! I just have one compliment from my 17 years old son:" Mom, you smell so good today" ;-). Beleive me: If he loves Unspoken and make a compliment, It is the most wonderfull perfume in the world!!!!!!!

I was never a fan of chypres but this divine fragrance made me think again. I get the resins, sandelwood, ylang and the orris up front. It's very much a chypre but it's a warm and inviting creation. Chypres have often been too harsh on me but not unspoken. I think it's the warmth of the resins and labdanum which mellow this one. The white flowers, rose and amber become more evident after half an hour. The citrus and aldehydes were very brief on the opening. It's such a rich and opulent fragrance so make sure it doesn't wear you. This is a statement fragrance. Moderate silage but excellent longevity.

Roja Unspoken (2007) - radiant chypre - a perfume by #rojadove. This vintage juice inside has integrated well through the years: Gum resins, Woody Sandalwood, Oakmoss and Spices are mixed with Powdery Orris, Rose, and Jasmine. I also get traces of Guerlain-ade with warm Vanillas, Labdanum, Patchouli and Ambergris. Extremely well-refined and chic.

Unspoken is an interesting fragrance, in that it has the echoes of Roja By Roja (Haute Luxe) but veers into a slightly sugared citrusy floral on my skin. Not really a chypre by any metric for me despite the notes being there if you search for them. All in all it’s a beautiful composition and frankly, more wearable than Haute Luxe. My only issue is the performance and the lack of availability. Scent: 8/10 very well done if you take time to appreciate it but not so in your face that you grow weary from it. Projection: 3/10 sorry on my skin it isn’t jumping off and at rest I cannot smell it unless I sniff the application site. Sillage: 2/10 no detectable train left in my wake but I feel like it is noticeable right after the spray. Longevity: 3/10 this is a disservice to the scent because even with subtle projection, the cozying assurance that it would last a long time is ansent here for me as well. Would I buy a full bottle? Not likely if it wasn’t a *really* good deal. I have a 10ml atomizer and do like this composition but for my money, creation-S femme is more likely to get re-purchased before I ever considered buying more of Unspoken.

In Unspoken Roja Dove has crafted a chypre, surely somewhat feminine-leaning, stereotypically, that is nonetheless sufficiently unisex, particularly in its dry down, to suit chypre-friendly men. It consists mainly, to my nose, of aldehydes, lavender, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, and labdanum. Certainly on the opening I get more of the floral / aldehydic / powdery blend, while in the dry down, the mix becomes woodier with rose and resins as more interesting supporting characters. It's almost slightly sweet in the dry down as well, perhaps due to teh resins. Performance is excellent, extreme in both projection and longevity. It's versatile in terms of season and perhaps occasion, but gender-wise, it leans feminine enough that it might not suit my mood at all times. Still, I quite like it, and will have to consider when I'll wear it, situation-wise. 7 out of 10

I'm totally with originaldeftom. Gorgeous scent, tacky bottle, a man could probably get away with it. I have finished my bottle. One of the few fragrances I want to buy again.

There is too much happening in this fragrance with nothing to hold it all together. The notes are not clear, and it is not because they are so seamlessly blended. Unspoken seems like a smash-up of things that don't (and shouldn't) cohere. It just morphs aimlessly. Peach? Now cinnamon? A waft of oakmoss? Maybe some Red Hots candy in there...or strawberry taffy is it? It doesn't smell bad exactly, but it definitely doesn't try to endear itself to the wearer.

Wow, this one is just too much for my taste. Too strong and too over the top. Sadly my 15 ml bottle will remain untouched.

I have the utmost pleasure of owning a now discontinued batch of Unspoken by Roja - this is indeed something to treasure. Unspoken. So many things are left unspoken in this world. We go by life; feelings, words, thoughts, instincts; all left unspoken. This particular fragrance to me; it is anything but unspoken. This is the epitome of a classic chypre which is loud, overpowering, confident and attention seeking; in the best possible way. Woody, ambery base that just wraps you around in a gorgeous sweet embrace, orris root, ylang ylang and jasmine to sweeten the fragrance, and on top, resinous heaven. I immediately get so much resin and woodiness that to me nose gets combined with an herbal/green feeling that makes this fragrance so decadent, so interesting. This is something I cannot compare to anything. I get classic Guerlain chypre vibes, I am sure Roja got inspiration from his times at Guerlain, I am also getting some Haute Luxe vibes, but in its core, this is definitely so differently unique. Dry, powdery floral it dries down to, and that slightly herbal facet fades away, leaving behind such beauty that carresses the skin. This to me is a fragrance that says all the right words. Nothing is left unspoken. I am here to conquer. I am here to impress. I am here to leave a mark. I wish everything in life was like this fragrance. So many things are being left unspoken. And.. for what?

As much as a love the premise of this fragrance, it leaves me longing for more. I kept dropping hints and eventually was bought it for xmas last year. I have worn it to many occasions and yes, it does yell at all who pass by, but I thought it would be far sexier and much more mysterious. It's a fragrance I will wear every now and again. It's not addictive and I imagine it's a little overpowering when i wear it for those who are in my company. I do like it - I just don't love it like I should. A classic chypre? Not so sure. A pleasant and strong interlude - the body creme is wonderful and possibly a little more enticing than the eau de parfum. Any of the Serge Lutens chypres are far superior. Sorry Roja ;)

I fully agree with the reviewers below. this one spectacular on all fronts- Superb scent, sillage is like forest fire, its made to last and last. I find this perfectly unisex. This is not the case where a man can just get away with it but he can proudly wear it. I tried both the EDP as well as Extrait at Paris Gallery, Dubai Mall. The Extrait is very rich, lush with floral,fruity and sweet woodsy notes. I found the extrait version fuller, rounder and better than EDP. I do have a small sample. I have received many compliments on this one. This amazing juice will find its way in the list of best scents some day but time alone will say that. Try it.

Unspoken is a classical chypre. It's very elegant and somehow haunting , but it's not original enough and it's very very expensive. It has the required bergamot opening, it goes heady sweet with some honey on the sidein the middle part. The drydown though it's beautiful with labdanum in the first part and some strange berry vanilla, but not really sweet, more like a doughy powdery reminiscent.

Hands down one of the best chypres ever created. The opening is very similar to the opening of Haute Lux, but very heavy orris/ambergris. If you can get your hands on this, I would as it is discontinued. The dry down is a powdery floral chypre that is just absolutely stunning. Huge projection/longevity. You will not find another like it. 10/10

To me the resins and sandalwood stand out and the soft spicy notes sing in the background. A rich and complex perfume, this can be easily shared.

In my eyes this is almost identical to Narcisse Noir by Caron. I love them both but Caron is a classic and also French... Big thumbs up...!!!
