Romeo Gigli per Uomo

Romeo Gigli per Uomo is one of my all-time favourites that I love even more each time I wear it. The flacon is a work of art, unique, and supremely elegant, with an air of mystery - there is no label or logo - like a genie’s bottle or a crystal decanter filled with a rare and priceless liquor. Emerald green, the content within looks like a magic potion. A wondrous elixir of intoxicating pleasure, so much so that each time I wear it I find myself constantly sniffing my wrist, grinning like an idiot. Per Uomo feels very Italian (to me) - like one of those compositions with a million ingredients - this is a full-bodied, multifaceted, dynamic olfactory symphony that evolves in such a way that the distinct stages in the pyramid are apparent. What I love the most about Per Uomo is that it is a tantalising, seductive sensory experience that feels familiar in style (reminds me of Fendi Uomo in that regard) yet every stage in its evolution is eclectically different to what one might expect. The overture is unlike anything else I can think of - aldehydes, a kind of aromatic citrus with subtle sweetness, which I presume is plum (although I wouldn’t have identified it without help from the notes listed above) accompanied by a distinctive Palisander rosewood. Can’t think of any other fragrance that starts off quite like this. The top notes recede into a mosaic of florals warmed by cinnamon, ginger, and woods united by a smooth resinous honey. At this point I get the impression of a subtle animalic note that’s probably illusory but reminds me of civet. The dry down is heavenly, soft warm and seductive like velvet - oakmoss, sandalwood, patchouli on a bed of resinous ambery-vanillic coumarin, musk and benzoin. Romeo Gigli is perhaps best known for his popularity among celebrities, notably the members of U2 - and as the designer of Bono’s iconic sunglasses and leather jackets, and his style has always been bold and innovative. Per Uomo is a stylish gentleman’s fragrance, a pleasure for wearer and entourage alike, and one of Alberto Morillas’ finest. A real crowd pleaser too - most people seem to like it and it even elicits compliments from strangers (today a lady in the supermarket asked what I was wearing because she thought her husband would like it) A real shame it has been discontinued - it is a truly beautiful and stylish men’s fragrance that feels wonderfully eclectic - like a really nice variation on a theme. Alberto Morillas created many of my favourites and this is a superlative example of creative designer perfumery. Per Uomo is complex, sophisticated, multifaceted and so intoxicating that I’m confident this would be a safe blind buy - if you can find it at a reasonable price.

I love everything about Romeo Gigli per Uomo. The box is simple, stylish and understated, the bottle is a work of art, and the juice itself is a masterpiece - exquisitely masculine in a very Italian way. For some reason, when I first savoured this heavenly fragrance, it took me back to Saint Tropez many years ago, and brought to mind an extremely good-looking young Italian model with a dark tan wearing the kind of swimming costume that only an Italian man could wear without his masculinity being questioned. Not that this is in any way exclusively for Italian male supermodels, it's just that that is the association this fragrance evokes for me. The opening is quite strong, rich, spicy, a bit green, with a woody dimension and as it develops I'm positive that I detect the presence of an animalic note - specifically civet, (à la Furyo, although much more subtle and understated) although it might be an aspect of the musk, accompanied by a symphony of spices, herbs and woods which compliment one another so beautifully that it becomes a wonderfully harmonious tribute to masculinity. Another reviewer likened it to a soohisticated Dalì painting and that description seems very apt - per Uomo is so multi-faceted that, like a Salavador Dalì masterpiece, there is a wealth of fine detail, depth and style that it seems to adapt itself perfectly to each individual who wears it - on my skin it becomes very woody, musky and almost animalic, yet on another guy I know it seems that green, spicy, almost herbal notes come to the fore. Longevity is outstanding,sillage is moderate and subtle, it is wonderfully complex and unfailingly pleasant to others, and attracts lots of compliments. Per Uomo is a masterpiece, stylish, timeless, masculine, and so multi-faceted that it adapts itself to each individual wearer beautifully. Worthy of a standing ovation. I absolutely LOVE this fragrance.

When Romeo Gigli Uomo first was launched in 89'...I never forget how much I enjoyed the sweet/powdery/woodsy vib from musk, patucchli sandalwood and a definite blast of Brazilian rosewood and aldehydes. After setting a HUGE robust aroma of amber and benzion gives this juice a warm spicy blend. The floral note of jasmine adds to the sweetness without it being cloying. Longevity and Silage is very high lasting well over 8hrs...I'm able to pick up the aroma at least 2ft away. Final thoughts, I have stated that some of best-known fragrance were created from 1980-1993. Out of the few men's frag's that were created by RGU...hands down this juice takes full points. After 30yrs I found a 100ml bottle with a faded purple box at a boutique tucked behind more current fragrance's. The owner had almost taken it to his warehouse because no one was willing to try it. What a shame that this amazing GEM is lost in this brand name recognitions today. I almost gave up trying to find the genuine fragrance, there's several bottles with a green-yellowish liquid. The original version has a vivid green color. If you are open to something that has a real woodsy-spicy-oriental aroma with a pronounced sweet/powdery top note...try this juice and you might consider it if you enjoy it. I'm not giving up my 2nd bottle. This frag is excellent during the early spring and into the very late summer through fall. Recommended when you want to turn on your partner or intimate friend. This fragrance will curl your partner's toes...enjoy ☺ 9.5/10

Gigli per Uomo is a remarkably stylish fragrance quite unlike anything around now. The flacon is a work of art and one of the most beautiful ever. To make it idiot-proof the box includes a leaflet explaining how to remove the cap. Gigli used the same flacon for Sud Est, GPU’s more “Mediterranean” sibling. With the genie bottle and its jade content Gigli per Uomo looks like a magic potion. And it is magical. Gigli per Uomo is classy, stylish and sophisticated, and a real chameleon of a fragrance. Seem to recall this was more woody last time I wore it, but today it feels more aromatic, oakmossy, subtly spiced and floral than I remember. A remarkably beautiful, multifaceted blend with a very elegant musky dimension. Agree totally with BlindFuryFragFanatic’s analysis below. Maybe it’s my imagination but I could swear Gigli per Uomo adapts to the wearer’s mood, smells different on different people, and presents different facets as it evolves every time you wear it. Gigli per Uomo creates an aura of mystery and elegance with a bewitching effect on others that persists long after it becomes imperceptible to its wearer. The flacon is a work of art and a thing of beauty. If you can get hold of this gem at a reasonable price it’s certainly worth considering.

Romeo Gigli per Uomo has attained cult status since its discontinuation, receiving praise from so many— yet none of the online reviews state what I thought to be obvious: it was composed by Morillas as an ode to absinthe. Even the color of the juice is the hue of this fabled tipple. The impression of bitter-sage-via-thuja wormwood oil, the delightful green-anisic tarragon, the sweet camphor of hyssop, it's all here. Yet, what lies within this framework is the sensibility of a masculine amber fougere, with its lineage traced back to Le 3e Homme de Caron and even further back, to an extent, to Fabergé Brut. Here, however, there is a plum accord, not unlike that of Rochas Femme, that, further in its development almost, but not quite, supplants the opening absinthe aromatics. This unlikely turn of events truly adds to the appeal, giving it a chypre-like feel into its dry down. Its base is a velour in shades of purple and pine, accented with balsam fir absolute and patchouli. It makes my heart ache that this is no longer in production, as it was truly a standout of its time, and one of the last truly innovative fragrances marketed to the male that would be released until at least the 21st century. It is also most definitely unisex.
