Rosendo Mateu No 1 Bergamot, Tea Leaf, Sandalwood

Rosendo Mateu 1 is part of the collection relaunched in 2017 by the master perfumer who has had his name involved in countless fragrances of worldwide success. However, with the birth of his own brand in 2015, Rosendo established himself as another creator of niche perfumes, working on the basic principles of this segment, among which creative power is unlimited and marketing departments do not dictate rules. Rosendo Mateu 1 was inspired by the breeze that comes from the sea in unique landscapes such as the coasts of Spain, Croatia, Italy and Greece. But it is no easy task to bottle up your idea of Mediterranean freshness in order that people around the world can capture it with the same insight. For this, Rosendo joined citrus and floral notes in a perfume full of brightness, freshness and succulence. In the first spray I applied on the skin, my thinking was: "Wow, it will be a sunny day." The fragrance features notes of thyme, sage, lavender and Mas rosemary flowers. Also at the top of the olfactory pyramid were used essential oils from citrus peels such as Calabrian bergamot, Spanish lime and Sicilian green mandarin. In the body of the fragrance, a floral bouquet with notes of jasmine, bitter orange flower's oil, green pepper, cardamom, tea leaves and muguet. Finally, the perfumer assured that the base was done in a way that could not neutralize the freshness of the fragrance. He used notes of sandalwood, iris root and white musk. The result is a fragrance that escapes from the common place of those that are extremely citric and full of bitter nuances of petitgrain, which come from the old German colognes, as well as those full of oceanic accords, which try to portray the salty sea water, for example. The easiest way to try to describe the sensation is this: imagine yourself taking a bath, in which the neroli is like the water, which falls and washes the whole body; the peels of citrus fruits represent the soap, as if it were an exfoliating bar with some pieces of cardamom and tea leaves. Lastly, after bathing, you moisturize your skin with a light textured body lotion with smell of musk. All this, after a boat trip on the crystalline sea, having the landscapes that served as inspiration for the perfumer. Can you imagine? If the response was positive, then the fragrance of Rosendo Mateu 1 took you on a unique first-class trip without leaving your home. And this, my friends, is a talent that few perfumers (in the whole world) have. It is worth to say that the projection is moderate, but the durability is very high. As they say, the first impression is the one that stays and mine was very positive. Beautiful work!

I feel like I shouldnt bother with a review - as Cassiano does a fantastic job summarizing this scent. I will say - I’m often intimidated by note breakdowns. This one had me on the fence. I guess I’m just glad I didn’t let myself get in my own way on this one. Francis Kurkdjian gets a lot of praise for being the “blending master” - but if this is how rosendo makes all of his scents, there may be a new king. This is as smooth as silk. The quality is 10/10 - and I love the simplistic bottle. It feels like a secret. This is a pillowy soft citrus that is further smoothed out by tea and jasmine. The notes are blended masterfully and the outcome is something special. I feel like this is one of the most pleasant scents I’ve smelled. Fantastic.

I absolutely ❤️ this fragrance! It has such a clean, rich, an uplifting smell to it. I used to favor Wulong Cha, by Nishane, but at times found it to be a little too floral, for my personal taste. Rosendo Mateu no. 1 has that soothing, clean smell, while being completely unisex. Although I have heard complaints about it's sillage, I can say that I've received compliments more that 10 hours after application. Keep in mind, however, that I use almond oil as a moisturizer, so I'm not sure it that's what helps. But, if you're a guy like me who can appreciate fragrances like Bal d'Afrique, but do not necessarily want to smell as floral as some of the facets of Wulong Cha, I would suggest to give this one a try.

“A Day of a Prince” Rosendo Mateu No 1 is the scent of a modern prince in Italy, playing tennis with his gorgeous girlfriend near the Costa Azzurra. Imagine a sunny field surrounded by neroli flowers and lemon trees, with a gentle breeze full of sophistication. The fragrance opens with fresh and pure floral notes with a light airy sweetness. As it develops, it envelops you in a creamy warmth with a subtle hint of musk and spices. Light, elegant, and terribly charming. It lasts 8-10 hours with a discreet diffusion – perfect for seduction without overdoing it. If you are looking for a fragrance that evokes a luxurious getaway to Italy, this is it. 9/10 – Absolute refinement.

Honestly I love it but it’s a very specific scent. When you first spray it you’ll get this immediate overwhelming citrus but once it dries down I personally got no citrus and instead was left with this beautiful aromatic, fresh, green scent with a hint of spice. It’s delightful and a very non-offensive scent that sits close to skin. I could see myself wearing this as a daily perfume or even an office scent. My only gripe is that it does not last long so you will need to layer with a lotion (2-3 layers is my trick to make scents last) and that extends the west time from an hour to about 4/5. Overall I’m pleasantly surprised by this scent

This doesn’t smell like EA’s Green Tea or Wulong Cha, this smells like a very luxurious soap. Very fresh and clean. Wulong Cha and EA Green Tea smell like an upmarket hotel lobby. I like this very much, I can smell the florals peeking through the citrus and the greenness. Scent: 8/10 Projection: 7/10 Longevity: 8.5/10

One of the most beautiful scents I’ve ever come across!!! Rosendo Mateu master at work!!! Maybe the best one of the best bergamots out! Unfortunately as much as I love the this one it doesn’t project or last as long as I would like my fragrances such as NO.5 which lasts forever.

Beautiful chypre. Peppery-spicy infusion of green tea, lavender, herbs and orange blossoms, in DD sandalwood with a hint of musk, the trail turns really flowery at times. Has similarities with Dioressence. Very elegant. I love it!

A great unisex summer perfume, very refreshing, different from the popular citrus perfumes. This juice is elegant, versatile with quality ingredients, a great creation by a great master. Thumbs up!

This is the best tea scent I've tried, and I've had a lot of them. It's a perfect balance of citrus, tea, and a little bit of fresh, zesty spice. It smells like it sparkles

I've been looking for an alternative to Guerlain's prohibitively expensive Neroli Outrenoir, and ran into this in the 'similar scents' section. Guerlain NO is characterised by a creamy neroli, bitter tea, jasmine, gentle smoke - I can smell these all in the drydown of No. 1, but it takes a bit to get there. The opening is a realistic pungent citrus: juicy from far away and sour and rindy up close to the wrist. I get a bit of the same in molecule 01 + mandarin and wulong cha. 10 minutes in, the dominating tartness gives way to a woolen? dryer-sheet smell, similar to that in Petit Matin. After 20 minutes, this is where I smell Neroli Outrenoir. Comparing the two side by side, No.1 is more pungent/sour and retains a warmth that Neroli Outrenoir doesn't. Neroli outrenoir is more bitter/dark, but it scratches the itch. I obtained this for 1/5 the price of Neroli Outrenoir; I cannot stomach paying 4 dollars/ml. I have finally been liberated from the search for an alternative. Edit: This did not scratch the itch. It's too bright, and has an almost candied citrus at the start, which I don't enjoy.

A very realistic sandalwood note in this, along with the lavender-neroli, white floral touches coming through prominently. The opening is a burst of freshness, the scent evolves to an elegant, musky sandalwood with a tinge of iris giving it depth with hints of sweetness, has a toned down green vibe to it enveloped in white, it's a soft but great performing scent. Overall, uplifting in the start, pure class in the dry down, must try for floral freshie lovers. 7.5/10

I blind brought this after watching Sebastian the perfume guy review it. I really like it. I’ll be honest I’m not blown away like I have been by others (Byredo bal d’afrique) but this is a really good and unusual scent yet very innoffensive, very clean and fresh and also I feel it’s really well blended and I smell the quality amd skill of Rosendo mateau. All round a great buy!

To my nose, orange blossom and neroli are the stars of this composition, which I admit is quite pretty. A soft white floral scent that is borderline unisex (maybe flirting a bit more with the feminine side of things) and with remarkable longevity too. I do not understand how one could dislike this perfume, as it is very discreet and elegant. 8/10

This is one of the best smells on earth !!!! So fresh so clean and it smells dam fantastic literally can’t hate anything about this composition, my brother discovered this house and this scent while sampling and we were instantly hooked!!!!! Soapy, effervescent citrus that is probably the best "freshly showered" scent ever. It reminds me of an Aqua Allegoria, but is a bit more potent. Can't really detect tea, this is more of a lemony soap on me.

Amazing unisex freshie scent with a performance that leaves a lot to be desired.

To me this is light, fresh and masculine. I see how it could be unisex. I'm getting the herbs strongly - thyme and rosemary - and the bergamot, pretty equally with the sandalwood. It's balanced but not what I was expecting. Somehow it almost smells forest-y and mossy to me - like lots of green things growing. A bit too much of the savory herbs or something for me. I think this would be a unique transitional fragrance between seasons - going into Spring or going into Fall.

Fresh, inoffensive, close to the skin scent. Opens up really fresh and dries down to a citrusy, lightly floral and aromatic scent. Overall a good scent. What bothers me is the the longevity (max 3h on my skin) and the hefty price tag. Not that unique, just fresh and aromatic scent. There are cheaper designer brands who do better for cheaper.

I just began my fragrances’ journey, so take what I write with 2 ( or more ) drabs of salt. Freshie, citrusy but smooth. Nothing tart. I like it but nothing special. What bothers me the most is the disappearing act. Not even an hour, and it becomes a skin scent then it vanishes. At $225 a bottle, it is a big no.

The green pepper in this is so overpowering, It reminds me of prepping fajitas or pulling weeds from a garden. I love love love #5 but this is truly offensive to my nose on paper and skin. Skin test: 2/10 Simply. No <3

Burst of bright citruses + zingy ginger, like a fresh, juicy lemongrass perfume with a gorgeous creamy smoothness. All aspects in equal measures and yet this is bit complex scent as well, as each time i wear this at times i would get more green wafts, and at some other time more citrus & tea, and then some other time more peppery yet creamy ginger tea. I wish to catch any floral aspect but i cant, just smooth creaminess. I just loved that the citruses stayed all though out and yes very well blended high quality scent. Great unisex perfume & actually a bit hidden gem for what it gives( I guess being overshadowed by the awesomeness of RM#5!) Edited/ Update: Has the same citrus & zing aspect & quality as Ingenious Ginger by Goldfields&Bank.

For me, this is a fresh, clean and unisex perfume that develops in a fairly linear way, showing us a balanced mix between citrus and green tea. On my skin the floral part practically does not stand out although there is a white musk in the background. It feels perfect for work environments in which we want to convey cleanliness and serenity since, at least for me, it has a relaxing scent. Unfortunately, although its sillage is soft but present and may be suitable for those environments, its duration on my skin is quite short, about 5 hours. This fragrance is not nearly as clean as some of these reviews would have you believe. And I mean that in a good way. I was expecting something boring and "white". There is a huge throwback to the animalic 80s going on here with the powdery jasmine and musk. Awesome to smell in a modern fragrance. It's blended very nicely and smells nice, but is a mature scent that leans masculine to me. Reminded me of Micallef Style, which was another throwback scent done well

sometimes simple is better. I do like how this smells more now that I have let my sample sit and I’ve revisited it, but I find this to be a little too specific of a fragrance. I think the aromatic notes are a little too strong for me and it would be rare that I would reach for this over a composition more simple like Thé Yulong. this almost smells like something I would rather have going in a diffuser in my home rather than wear on my skin.

Verbena, green tea, lemon (not an overly intrusive or pointed variety), a very soft and faint vanilla and a floral note I can't pinpoint. Almost purple-hued. Honestly, this is kind of plain. But well made with a very round body. The slight vanilla hints takes its edges off almost completely and makes for a pleasant, low-key scent. If you're craving a more ethereal citrus scent, this might be your jam.

It’s a lovely relaxing citrus and I think if No.5 didn’t set such a high level, I might be able to review it balanced. But unfortunately the lofty expectations set by No.5 will not be met here. It’s nice, and had nice longevity. So it’s a safe, nice fragrance, but didn’t blow me away. For reference, it lasts much much much longer than wu long cha, and may be just as good.

It smells like a certain Penhaligon’s perfume with a hint of Scottish Irn Bru orange soda... I believe it is Halfeti. You can tell how high quality the ingredients are, this is great with a high sillage and longevity. Perfect wintertime scent, the cardamom and sandalwood create a Christmas accord. A bit too heavy to wear in Spring or Summer.

Oh gosh, this is so pretty!!!!! What a beautiful clean and pleasant smell. I feel like the tea note is really prominent, plus i detect some orange citruses and a little bit of musk/iris. Really really really beautiful and refined, impossible not to like this :-)

I really wanted to like this but I can’t help but be reminded of toilet spray. Almost opens up like a green garden salad from that green pepper 🫑 with citruses. You can make out the tea more and more as it dries down but it’s a pretty boring scent. Pass.

This is rather pleasant, but I get serious cleaning agent vibes from it. I can easily see someone making a remark about how I smell like I just cleaned the floor and then rolled around on it. It will be a pass for me.

Opening was very strong citrus and slightly bitter greens, tea most likely. As it's drying down, I'm getting a lot of sage and lavender plus a bit of cardamom around the less bitter tea. It's lovely!

beautiful at the opening. but it didn't last long then becomes the scent of laundry detergent.

To me this is straight up Lemon grass. I love it.
