Royall Rugby

I played rugby, so as much as I wanted to like this... no. The initial blast is quite nice and citrusy but it dries down to something somewhat soapy that smells like functional perfumery - something you spray on linen, for example. My wife thought it smelled like the dish soap she uses. It's not bad, but it's not really successful. Zero WOW factor. I suppose you could say it's a "good work scent," which, to me, is like damning with faint praise. The green notes make it smell like a cousin of Mugler Cologne. What does real rugby smell like? Hot turf, sweat, blood, cotton, Ben-Gay and, sometimes, men whose hygiene needs some attention. (Especially if you're in the scrum like I was.)

Seamless mix of cedar, citrus, green notes, civet, and a bit of patchouli and oakmoss. Like a mix of Terre d'Hermes and Duc d'Vervins with a dollop of Kouros.

Royall Rugby is a perfect woodsy refresher after doing some workout. The sillage is really weak and also the longevity is way too short but still it has something fresh and woodsy as top notes that i fall in love, so i am still buying it since many years now. Nowadays its way too difficult to purchase it from Europe.

A clever mix of notes to create a sophisticated green concoction of grass and leather that is true to its name. Unlike its name, however, it is just too timid. I found its longevity okay with some modest splashing, especially the geranium, but just wish it projected more, especially for its price.

I love the citrusy opening of Royall Rugby, and definitely notice the vetiver. As soon as the opening ends, it quickly becomes a skin scent with poor longevity. I’m guessing the whole lineup from Royall Lyme Fragrance house struggles with performance. I own Royall Yacht (a blue-aquatic), which has decent sillage but longevity is disappointing. Royall Rugby is a $20-30 fragrance being sold for $45-55 a bottle. Score: 6 out of 10 Would I purchase a replacement bottle? No.

This fragrance is very misunderstood. It's not meant to be worn as a traditional men's all day EdT or EdP. Instead, it works more like traditional EdC (think 4711 or a body splash) but with slightly more variation and sophistication in its construction. When viewed from this angle, the fragrance graduates to its appropriate role: an exquisite 3 -4 hour early morning or mid-afternoon or early evening pick me upper. Lazy Saturday afternoon Whole Foods run, Sunday morning Target run, Thursday evening, after work post gym workout and shower, Monday morning early business class NYC-LA flight, or a surprise business lunch (jacket required) with a client.... these are the appropriate situations for Royall Rugby. And, it's exactly these situations and environments where it shines and out-does itself because the geranium note is very bright and tempered with a classic masculine vetiver with both a solid yet mercurial black currant and a light green patchouli at the base. This is a fragrance that does 2 very difficult things for a certain kind of man, and it does them simultaneously. It refreshes any space you enter while wearing it, and in doing so announces you well without being overbearing, AND it projects superbly for almost exactly 1hour before dialing itself back to a beautiful green yet smooth and sweet 2-3 hour dry down. It's white collar shirt and blazer perfection, especially with dark jeans and loafers. You can also dial it down to a white Lacoste polo, jeans and loafers. Trust me, you will find female cashiers at the check out counter being extra nice to you and offering you instant in-store coupons you had no idea existed! Bon chance 🍒🍸
