Acqua di Colonia Lana

Lana is like a wild animal — it needs to be tamed. I bought this fragrance blind, slightly worried because it definitely wasn’t cheap. My first impression after spraying it was: wow! But... wait a second — what is that green, tangy, leafy note? I gave it some time and on my skin the scent became soft, slightly sweet, almost subtly vanilla-like. On my clothes, however, that leafy note was still very noticeable. I left the house after spraying my scarf, hoping the scent might mellow on fabric over time — but it didn’t. (To be fair, I live in Northern Europe and the temperature isn’t exactly fragrance-friendly.) Feeling a bit disappointed and discouraged, I came home and put the perfume up for sale. The next day, I thought maybe I had judged it too quickly and decided to test it again — this time only on my skin, without spraying my clothes. And that was a bull’s-eye. The initial bitterness quickly transformed into this indescribably comforting scent of... well, wool. Slightly woody, slightly leathery, but in a very soft, subtly sweet way. With a bigger smile on my face — though still not entirely convinced — I sprayed it a few more times throughout the day, and I liked it more and more. Over the following days I tested other perfumes, but I kept looking forward to spraying Lana again. I found myself thinking only about this fragrance, and everything else started to seem ordinary. In the end, I deleted the listing and happily kept my large bottle. So take this as a word of advice: give this perfume time. It needs to be tamed, and you have to remember that on skin it transforms beyond recognition :)

I received this beauty as a gift and ... boy, did the gift giver hit the nail on the head! In the short time I’ve owned Acqua di Colonia Lana, it’s become one of my most worn scents. Based on the notes listed here, this should not be so appealing to me. I don’t consider myself a fan of overly woody fragrances, and I’m typically not a fan of sandalwood. And yet, I can’t get enough of this stuff. The cedar, sandalwood, and vetiver combine so nicely to create a cozy, woody vibe that’s just the slightest bit sweet. The musk and rose are not doing any heavy lifting to my nose, but do simultaneously ground the fragrance and help it soar. I personally don’t pick up much (if any) leather. As someone noted below, the official Santa Maria Novella site lists other notes including cardamom, fig flowers, bergamot, and herbaceous green notes. Other than the green notes, which I think help liven up the woody notes a bit, I don’t really detect those. This is great fragrance to wear in the office and it can be worn throughout the year. It really is an easy reach for almost any occasion. Longevity is not an issue on my skin (I detect it in the air around me for hours and hours). Projection is decent, and it’s a fairly inoffensive scent that isn’t going to bug most folks. It really is a gem.

kicking myself for not buying this. it initially sprayed on kind of similar to rose jam by lush? within a few minutes the fig (which isn’t listed here but according to the lady in the store and their website it’s here) takes the wheel. like sandalwood and ripe figs and rose petals steeped in milk. it’s quite lactonic but simultaneously fresh in a way i don’t quite understand. it still managed to be wearable on a super hot day DYING to know how it’ll wear in cooler weather. ugh, i’m going back for it, aren’t i. edit: so i went back for it and i've been wearing it a ton for the past month. i don't love it for SUPER hot days but i still think it's wearable year-round as long as you're not in a heat wave. it's just incredibly comforting and uplifting. a few people i've shown it to have smelled it on a tester and really disliked it (my girlfriend said it smelled like nerds candy? which confused me) but i only get compliments when it's on my skin. so i'd say it's not blind buy-safe. really great longevity and projection: it's an edc but it performs better than a lot of my edps. lasts all day!

First, the picture is not correct, this isn't the correct bottle. Second, the notes aren't correct, this has been pointed out numerous times. I went to test it today at a perfume shop. It was the last bottle. I left and returned 30 mins later to buy it. I loved it that much. It starts very fresh and loud and milky. Smells like sweet milky green fig. This loudness is for a short time - max 1 hr. Then it retrieves to its own bubble. It stays green and calm and warm. The longevity is amazing for EDC. For me this is a great scent and I am going to check the other scents from this house.

I'm utterly in love with this! 'Lana' means 'wool' in Italian and this really does smell like wool in the best possible way. I recently bought high-quality, undyed organic wool blankets and it smells very much like them. The scent is warm, comforting, creamy, slightly sweet, somewhat earthy, with a hint of spiciness and it's just divine. I think it best suits autumn and winter but really, it could work anytime. It's perfectly unisex and is a stunning, underrated fragrance. Unique and very special.

Sprayed multiple fragrances at the SMN shop in Miami, this was the one I couldn't get my nose off of. Very unique, I have nothing like it in my collection yet it is not challenging to wear. An absolute beauty. I had never heard of it, but read about many (including Lana) on Fragrantica to help me figure out what to test. First I purchased the SMN 8 vial sampler, to test so happy I went back to the shop to try more that were not in the sampler.

If Byredo has Bal D' Afrique, DIptique has L'eau Papier, Santa Maria has LANA. They are all different but they are all unique, ultimatelt clean, slightly sweet musky & earthy type. It like a scent of a sophisticated young women in the office who are religious, CHIC & naturally KIND & all young men have inner crush on her.

GORGEOUS!!! The rose is lush and jammy for the first few minutes, then it dies down to a dry leather with the rose very subtle and the woods really come out to the forefront. I get a green, galbanum, mossy note too. Really lovely and absolutely unisex.

I'm in love with this fragrance and for a reason, this is what I mean when I say that this is your go to lazy day fragrance. The smell of sunday morning. The sweet musky aroma with the rose at the background, and a beautiful wood that kicks in.

Finally got my bottle. A soft sandalwood/rose/aromatic/musk. My one and only choice from Santa Maria Novella.

Lana is sunlit brine and wind-tossed greenery, a tapestry of textures—crisp, fibrous, salt-laced—unfolding over a base of shadowed earth. It opens fig as mentioned by the reviews below, but not sappy and milky, rather green and unripe, sharp at the edges, skin taut with bitterness. No lush lactones, no honeyed flesh—only the brittle snap of its stem, pooling into a cool, aromatic breeze of cardamom, which here is piercing rather than soft, leaning into its camphoraceous, almost medicinal facets. The spice glows cold and green, like crushed pods rubbed between fingertips, their oils releasing a peppery, almost eucalyptus-like sharpness. And salt—forget the clean, ozonic salt of sun-warmed skin—here it sits fine-grained and dry, clinging to vetiver’s fibrous roots, amplifying their grassy, smoky depth. The vetiver is dark, shadowed, more Haitian than Javanese—less citrus-lifted and more anchored in its earthy, slightly ashy core. There is no sweetness, no mellowing florals, just the interplay of spice, saline, and green, a scent that feels both raw and refined, unpolished yet intentional. Think sun-bleached linen draped over driftwood, or the crisp snap of a salt-sprayed herb underfoot. Bracing, wind-worn, almost austere. But evocative.

Okay but where is the fig in the ingredients list?? I smelt this in Milan and the Italian shop lady told me there was fig and I instantly smelt it... so where is it here? Anyway - gorgeous scent and very unique but definitely not a safe blind buy personally. I adored it, but my partner did not. I can also imagine it changing quite drastically depending on skin chemistry because it somehow smells delicate yet alluring.

Very woody, with a touch of fresh rose. It’s woody in an interesting way because it manages to be light, I think because of an underlying powdery-ness. You could wear this on a summer day without it being too heavy. It’s perfectly unisex, and very classy smelling. I got this at the store in Florence and the bottle is completely gorgeous, frosted glass with a three dimensional logo on the back. It’s such a gorgeous bottle to just have on a shelf or a vanity. The scent just isn’t to my personal taste, it gives me a headache after a while and sometimes smells quite medicinal. That and the bottle came with a plastic part in the neck that makes it a bottle that you dab onto yourself but at the store they give you a different cap and an atomiser that screws into the neck, but I have yet to figure out a way to switch between the two without completely destroying the plastic part or tearing it out with pliers. Whilst that’s definitely me being silly, I couldn’t find the answer on their website or google, nor did they explain at the store. Just a mildly irritating detail.

Y'all this is literally red bell peppers. In the background there's a nice spiky rose thing going on with a woody musk, but omfg... red bell peppers. That is all I smell. That is all everyone I show this to smells. Really unfortunate. I love SMN but Lana isn't good. Reallyyyy regret buying a full bottle of this. Oh well.

I don’t know how someone could think that it smells like cashmere tbh. For me it’s a very green and spicy scent (like a rose stem), I can feel some powdery and musky notes underneath, but I just can’t pass by that strong green note. The Official notes from Santa Maria Novella are as follows:- “Top: cardamom, fig flowers, bergamot Middle: rose, herbaceous green notes, fresh marine notes Base: musk, precious woods. The main notes are of leather and valuable woods (sandalwood, cedar and vetiver) with powdery notes of moss and rose petals”. At first I really couldn’t decide if I loved or loathed Lana. It has an addictive quality, but then I found it overwhelmingly cloying and even a little nauseating. Despite SMN classifying Lana as woody, to me it smells quite gourmand. Mapache hit the nail on the head by describing Lana as having a creamy hazelnut vibe. If you love milk chocolate with hazelnuts, or hazelnut chocolate spread, you may well love Lana, but for me, I think it just needs more dry woody notes or a more smokey leather to dial the sweetness down. Longevity is impressive at over 12 hours. Even though on the second day I had only sprayed a small amount on my chest under a shirt and jacket, it was still strong enough for others to comment. Like me, both those people could not figure out if they enjoyed Lana or not. Definitely not a safe blind buy.

This is tough one. I wouldn't wear it around people as you will get unwanted attention and not in a good way. It's smells like medicinal hippie wooden cabin in a middle of the woods that's also smells moldy. Every time I sprayed it my husband freaks out and says what's that's smell it smells like moldy wood.

I blind bought this from a friend after believing the reviews when they said this is musky, rosy sandalwood. It is nothing but cloying creamy fig. very confusing. it’s green, but like a spa lotion gone bad.

Puzzled by the inspired reviews, I wonder if SMN sent me a spoilt sample. This is one of the worst compositions I have ever smelled.

Lana means wool, but it's more like some kind of a fantasy pasture of edible roses and greens, the creamy sourness of cedar and sandalwood, and an old-world musky base to link all of it. It's the green of the rose that creates that outdoors natural feeling of simplicity that can never go out of fashion. A certain nuttiness comes out of this particular combination, a lactonic fig leaf illusion, thick and dark-green leaves under a shadow. It is all quite an usual set of notes, but tweaked towards a certain rustic imagery from pre-internet times, the SMN times. This being said, Lana has been just terrible in the colder months: moldy, Gray Flannel-type musky, just too much and too heady for most occasions. It just needs higher temperatures to revive the good parts and it's best suited for travelling, daytime, countryside, gardens, parks, holiday escapes. When it sits in a room, or a club, or the office space, you can feel something's definitely not right. So, Lana can be beautiful, but quite site-specific. It is also heavily off any trend, but it rules where no trendy stuff is required. Social media-wise, it is more like Tumblr than TikTok.

I received this today as a blind buy. I was hoping for a woody rose and am very happy that is what i experience. I get a greenness which I suspect must be the fig but no clear fig notes which I am happy about as I am not the biggest fan. Also I just don’t get the wool reference- to me wool is slightly animalic, and maybe smells of lanolin. However there is none of that here. It is a straight up woody rose with a watery greenness. The woods are soft, natural smelling and don’t overpower the sweet roses. It is a quiet and soothing perfume which reminds me of misty mornings in the spring. It is a definite love for me.

Thé Noir’s sophisticated older sister. Forget about the listed notes, this smells like a whole fig tree. First you get the rich, jammy fig fruit (richer and more satisfying than the watery green fig interpretations of e.g. Philosykos and Debaser). Then comes the lush fig leaf and the stem- herbaceous and slightly bitter and with a sweet milky waft of plant sap. This balance- milky green vs dark rich fig- makes the scent versatile year-round. The best fig I’ve tried, the best Santa Maria Novella I’ve tried, and possibly the best in my collection. Truly a scent to fall in love with!

Hello! I was impressed by the smell being in Florence, and bought it too fast. I cannot use it, unfortunately. I have the full bottle without several sprays made trying to wear. If somebody is interested, I am located in Denmark. Maybe somebody needs it more, pity that this beauty is just staying on the shelf.

Does anyone else smell eucalyptus in here? There's something that gives Lana a steamy spa-like allure that is sooo freaking captivating. I can't stop smelling my wrist! As always with Santa Maria Novella, this is such a sophisticated scent. Definitely close to the skin, but oh so memorable. I am in love

Tested this yesterday at Santa Maria Novella store in Miami. This was a love at first sniff for me!!!! To my nose...I don't think the scent "smells like" the notes listed completely...???....I get hazelnut creamy vibes...moderate sillage/projection...but wow...this is spectacular!!!

To me this smells insanely like eldelflowers, to my mum too! Mysterious woodland fairy princess dream🩷 I’m usually a gourmand girlie, i reach for this when i want to be a bit edgier, a bit more unisex. Such a wonderful, unique scent!

You pick up the musk from TF White Suede and mix it with Turkish coffee, it will become Lana. I bought it and didnt wear it for more than a year but suddenly I have started enjoying it.. So I guess its a grower!!

Not for me. On my skin it has this bizarre musty smell. And for a cologne the stuff is tenacious. Yikes.
