#116 of My Fragrance Journey - Santa Maria Novella Alba di Seoul: The city was a ghost. I was the jolt. 4 AM Seoul. Streets damp and paused, like the city forgot what it was doing. I didn't wait for it to remember. Hit the atomiser and the world went electric. It wasn't a fragrance at first. It was impact. Sharp, acid-green bergamot - all juice, zero sugar - cutting through cold air like something with intent. Then nutmeg. Dry, gritty, giving the whole thing physical weight. Not a garden. More like stepping into a coniferous forest before the sun's finished the job. Resinous. Cold. Vibrating at a frequency you feel in your chest before you name it. I forgot the pavement. The city blurred. Just a pulse moving through digital woods. The half-hour walk changed it, but only slightly. Lavender came in - and forgot the barbershop. This was metallic, atmospheric, the kind of cold that comes off glass at night. Violet like crushed neon leaves, powdery in a way that felt more like static than petals. You don't pick these apart. You just... inhabit them. It's a bassline, not a melody. Steady. Driving. Completely unbothered by whether you're paying attention. Hours in, something shifted - neon to gold, barely perceptible. Cedarwood came through dry and architectural. Patchouli underneath, but stripped clean, none of the earth, none of the murk. It didn't pull me out. It just pushed me deeper into the quiet. Here's the honest part, though. It's a loop. A beautiful, intentional one - but a loop. The same green-woody beat, cycling. In the wrong weather, it can feel like a rave that went an hour too long. But in the in-between - rainy afternoon, late-summer 5 AM, the commute nobody else is on - it's exactly right. Doesn't need a plot twist. Chooses a state and stays there. That's the thing about Alba di Seoul. It doesn't evolve because it doesn't have to. Vibe: Coniferous forest inside a moving train. Cold light, no destination. Performance: 7–8 hours, moderate projection, dries closer and closer to skin as the hours pass - in a good way. Fit: You wear this when you're already certain of where you're going, and you don't need the scent to explain it for you. I purchased a bottle of this magnificent fragrance from the original Santa Maria Novella in Florence. It was a hot day in Mediterranean April and it was crowded. I couldn't stop smelling the elegant porcelain tester and the middle aged clerk, Simone, told me that she thought it was interesting I was so drawn to this scent, as it felt to her like the cleaner, lighter, more summer-appropriate cousin to Tobacco Toscano (which I had mentioned was a particular favorite of mine). On a recent trip to Florence, I paid pilgrimage to the original Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella. It was a hot late afternoon in Mediterranean April and the building was crowded with couples of all ages. Repeatedly, I found myself drawn to the porcelain tester for Alba di Seoul—addicted to its clean airiness, its summery nostalgia, the memories and feelings it evoked in me. I told the middle aged clerk, Simone, that this fragrance was beautiful. I told her that Tobacco Toscano was one of my favourites. It was interesting, she said, that I would be so drawn to Alba, which she described as TT's lighter, more heat-appropriate cousin. This is the most apt description of this cologne. In comparison to TT's moody romanticism, with its evocative expression of velvet drapes and tailored smoking jackets—Maxim DeWinter watching the sea from a library—Alba calls to mind the crisp tang of white and blue tile. It carries over the woodiness in the trapped memory of rain on mulch. I recall nostalgic fantasies from my childhood on Cape Cod; of walking barefoot on sandy feet past the back porch, hosing off salt water and sun beneath a tap-cold outdoor shower and putting on cool, clean clothes. This fragrance's ability to hack into my sensory subconscious is astounding; I am immediately transported to a tranquil landscape dominated by cool breezes and the sobs of mourning doves at dusk. On women this might be boring; in many ways it borders on a melon-cucumber soap. It is because of that almost generic femininity that I think this fragrance becomes so exciting on men, and is the reason I bought it to wear. It really evokes that clean, sun-warm, fresh-out-of-the shower smell that I find so erotic on a man; the kind of scent that makes you want to go out to a nice dinner on a terrace somewhere.

I really just got this as a souvenir visiting the Santa Maria Novella main store in Florence, near the train station. The experience of being in that old Oficina was incredible. The smells, the history, the decor...all wonderful. Of course I tried many of the Eau de Colognes they had on offer. Usually, if it's an EdC it's not going to be a buy for me considering the value for money. But for SMN I make an exception due to the history and how cute the bottles are. I tried Tabacco Toscano, which was nice, dry, and had an almost acrid quality to it. It was quite strong to my surprise. But then I tried Alba di Seoul, and for some reason it captured me as being the most modern and appealing scent in the SMN line up. The vast majority of their scents are quite old school, barbershop or otherwise "room spray" scents. Alba di Seoul is a fresher and more modern take on an EdC that isn't just a blast of citrus. This is quite soapy, almost on the limit of being too much, but there's also a nice melon accord in here that is fresh. Like if you are eating a cold melon on a hot day. I get the "Seoul" vibe in this, as there is something distinctly "Asian" feeling about this fragrance. The 50ml bottle I got is so cute. If you are in Florence going to SMN is a Top 5 must do, including David, Uffizi, Duomo and Ponte Veccio.

The pyramid currently listed here on Fragrantica differs significantly from the official brand website. According to the manufacturer, the fragrance is officially classified as a Spicy Fougère, not an Oriental Woody. The official notes are: Top Notes: Bergamot, Nutmeg Middle Notes: Violet Leaves, Lavender, Jasmine Base Notes: Patchouli, Amber, Cedarwood, Musk It might be worth keeping this in mind when voting on the "Perfume Pyramid" section, as the official pyramid suggests a much more aromatic and woody-floral character than what is currently displayed.

I fell in love with this perfume as soon as I smelled it, back in the Officina Santa Maria Novella in Florence. A modern scent, very fresh, very green, very sophisticated: a unisex fragrance that will surely make you feel quite put together. It doesn't last too long but I don't mind it! It ends up feeling personal, as if the scent radiated from your own skin. It isn't particularly woody to me, but it definitely is quite green: I also find its name to be perfect for this fragrance.
