The gold label Opoponax is an earthy, fresh, slightly bitter and spicy fragrance that smells like it was made with very expensive and hard-to-find ingredients. To me, it seems expertly mixed, as every note shows up in perfect proportion. Opoponax is also linear, but that’s a great thing in this case, because you can pick out all the notes listed at once. I think the “Italian barbershop” analogy is perfect, largely because, to my nose, the patchouli is more mint-like than other patchoulis tend to be (they are in the same family, after all), and that gives the fragrance a fresh, almost eucalyptus-like accord. With all of that understood, I have a hard time imagining this being anything close to unisex. To me, this is a gentleman’s scent, and I can’t see anyone under the age of 30 really pulling this off. A caveat though: Judging by feedback I’ve gotten, other people interpret the smell differently than I seem to, and women respond to it better than I expected. It might just be that I can’t see a unisex application for it, and I could be wrong. Regarding sillage, I don’t think it would be wise to spray more than two sprays (three is probably the limit if you care for the people around you); while it’s a nice scent, it’s also very powerful. Lastly, I have trouble understanding criticisms about Opoponax’s longevity, as I can still smell it on my skin the following day (musk turns ripe-smelling on my skin over time, and I just hate it). Opoponax smells like nothing I expected, and it’s wonderful. I don’t think I could wear it every day, but it’s one I’ll be keeping in my collection permanently.

I am really struck by the intonation in SMN Opoponax, like a sun coming through the clouds to warm the icy chill. Wrapped in its uplifting glow, its elements of citric, bitter, sweet, resinous and earthy, revive me in the doldrums of January. The opoponax resin itself imparts the feeling of smoky oak wood, old leather, celery seeds, lovage root, and bitter treacle. A saddle soap feel here is reminiscent of that in SMN's Peau d'Espagne, but here it is all lighter and brighter, with a texture more like velour. The development after an outstanding opening is no less evocative, as it is here that the duskier qualities of the resins are more apparent, growing drier and smokier, hints of evergreens, reminiscent of the aroma of the opoponax resin that I have in my possession, especially if I were to rub the grains between my fingers. A warm, dry and sensual musk is what carries Opoponax through to a skin scent, with suggestions of the resins still detectable hours on. What is most noteworthy is just how measured it all feels: a perfect pace. A wool Pendleton sweater, a cup of Lapsang Souchong, and reading Keats, would make great accompaniments for Opoponax.

I was visiting the Santa Maria Novella church in Florence few days ago and while walking through the cloister , I couldn't help to notice the interior of the officina profumo-farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. so Immediatly after my visit of the church, I went to the perfumery, the interior is superb, I asked to smell the male fragrances, the lady at the counter offered several mouillettes of their fragrances, somes citrusy, some woody, some floral and an other citrusy one, nothing that really caught my attention or that I've not scented yet and then she said " this one is my favourite, it's different and special it's called opoponax" and oh boy, wow, it opens with strong resins and citrus, halston z14 comes to mind, and then it dries down, and the opoponax shines, giving to that blend a floral vibe, but not the kind of white florals, more brown and purple florals, I love it. It is masculinity shown in a poetic way. Very italian in a sense. Update : This stuff shines on a mild weather and rainy day

Loved it, wore it. The scent was opoponax and resins on me, with a hint of patchouli and a bit of musk. It gave me no sweetness at all, but freshness - it did, as if there was a brook, and light summer wind was blowing from it to me, bringing the freshness, and at the same time I got a very dry feeling from the scent, with not a drop of water in the dryness. Both impressions coexisted beautifully and made me quite happy.

Opens with a sweet warm citrus energy that settles quickly into a nice warm subtle skin scent of sheer resinous musk. Makes me want to have a power lunch in a beautiful restaurant inside a high end department store, a glamorous salad in a big chilled bowl. Feels kind of classy- I have trouble wearing this with a t-shirt. Needs a button down.

Feels very meditative and relaxing. Spa meets new age store. Very resinous. Bit one note but its like a really really good note.

Opoponax Santa Maria Novella (Forst? bottle, probably 3rd version). Opoponax is a soft incense, musky powdery amber. slightly feel like Dusk. In Santa Maria Novella, I tile with Patchouli create fairly unisex Patchouli - Powdery scent. Very classic, just a bare backbone of amber-patchouli constuction. I am agree with Eau Lente ( I enjoy both) but Eau Lente leans more transparence and modern. This is old world. Nontheless, I full wear this for a first time. Good, gentle and good. ===== June 15, 2026. I ride Opoponax last night, and it is one of the best ride lately. I Splash, 4 big drop on each side of my old Iris tee. It fresh, spicy and vanillic. It feels slightly like a carnation flower. And eventually become an apothecary. not an age old, lumber mold one. But sunny soak, fresh inside a clean stone, white building. Aroma build not truly move away to somewhere else. like Incense or something. But connect heart to your body, touching a glass or ceramic, regain sensation. It eventually move to the warm, resinous hot amber balsamic and eventually. It melt and become vanilla. dusty vanilla slightly hot balmy and incense. to be specific; It golden hue spicy amber. a gentlemen amber. unwind, carefree and firm. Revisit so soon, you're so good to me.

The opening is bright, in a splintery kind of wood/resin way, with an almost-but-not-quite citrus note (lemon verbena?) and a light sweetness. Throughout, opoponax is all about golden tones, but the feel is decidedly cool at first, and slightly gourmand. I am reminded of an iced herb-infused pound cake pulled from a fridge. The heart warms up only slightly, and resembles its sister Marescialla to a remarkable degree at this point. Both scents share a frothy, (here: lightly) spiced, just-soapy, mossy quality. It is as if marescialla’s shadowy forest floor is flooded with golden sunlight from a felled tree. Flooded with light, and also somehow lighter weight than Marescialla as well (a fragrance which I think anyway remains remarkably buoyant despite its possibly leaden hodgepodge of basenotes). The patchouli shows a has a different, more mushroom and less chocolate syrup facet here and I wonder if there might be a smidge of nagarmotha, giving it just a little more lift and subtle herbaceous character than Marescialla. And, yes, there is a distinct opoponax facet. Opoponax, for me, is a note with two faces: at times the most buoyant of resins, at times sticky and sultry. SMN’s Opoponax is unsurprisingly in the former camp, and the accompanying bright woody, mossy, and herbal facets complement it perfectly, making the individual notes difficult to parse. In fact, I think the opoponax is a background player for much of the drydown, but the other notes combine in such a way that it is always difficult to say with any certainty. This pretty much remains true to the heart well into the drydown before transforming into a kind of anonymous amber base. In the SMN pantheon, Opoponax reminds me most strongly of Marescialla but lacks the camphorous and turpenic elements that that scent shares with Pot Pouri. I also experience flashes of the EdP line—the general billowing feel of Incenso is at play here, along with the somewhat bitter resins of Ambra. I like Opoponax better than the EdP line but find it doesn’t suit me as well as my beloved Marescialla. If you want more complexity than the EdPs, or more sweetness and lightness than Marescialla, Opoponax is your girl! And while I’m comparing, dare I say there is almost a hint of shalimar here, as if shalimar were carried on a cool but sunlit breeze?

I found bottle of Opoponax in S Maria Novella's wonderful traditional shop on Picadilly London, opposite the Royal Academy, by chance. I was not one for using much Colonia but now I'm somewhat captivated by this warm sensual aroma. I was very interested to see that the name of the ingredients relates to the word in ancient Greece for - panacea. Having just discovered this it makes me more confident, as a male, to wear it! Why not surround myself with healing properties! ? Thanks for hosting the site – a great idea and useful.

opens with fresh deep damp resins, slighty sweet vanilla hints of evergreen, botanicals, sweet moist dirt pepper, lemongrass, orange, wood, fennel, sage & something possibly mentholated like eucalyptus which my brain perceives as tart after a couple of hours i realized the note that reminded me of eucalyptus is medicinal patchouli 3-4 sprays, medium projection, lasts several hours

I have the one in the frosted bottle. It's fresh and zingy like ginger, tart-feeling, warm and spicy. Refreshing for warm weather, and perfect for cold. If you cannot stand even a bit of floral sweetness/creaminess in your fragrances (they often turn my stomach), this one is for you.

Very Italian barbershop, but on the spicy side. Definitely masculine. Starts out pretty strong, but settles quickly, and is a skin scent in just an hour or 2 on me. After 3 hours, it's nearly gone. Beautiful, high quality, short-lived.

It’s nice, definitely those old school vibes, not cozy warm amberey opoponax like I expected. It’s dry and more patchouli heavy to my nose. Not a love, but a 1ml decant is fine. Glad I didn’t blind buy a bottle.

I have the new version which is nice but not the same of the old one. Looking to buy the old version (the one in the fragram photos). Anyone sells it? :)
