Cypress in Oak

Wow, I love this. The cypress here isn't very astringent/sour compared to many other cypress notes in perfumery, but it's still got the key balsamic traits that are characteristic for cypress. I understand why people may perceive this to be masculine, but I definitely consider it unisex. It's not rough or loud like many "very masculine" scents--it's actually incredibly smooth, rounded, slightly warm, and even a little cozy (likely due to the cashmeran, oakmoss, and mineral notes). I imagine it's best suited to fall and winter weather, but it's definitely good year round as well because it does have a bit of a Mediterranean character (not aquatic, just Mediterranean). I'm currently enjoying it in 85 degree heat and it's not suffocating at all. Longevity is moderate and sillage is intimate/moderate for me. If you're on the fence about trying this one, I say go for it. I don't ascribe to the school of thought that fragrances are gendered but I understand that others do and it can be important in buying decisions for some. If the notes here look good to you and you're not looking for a "very feminine" fragrance, this is a safe blind buy in my opinion. At the very least it's worth sampling for a few dollars. Really lovely scent. A side note: If you like Cypress in Oak and might be interested in something a little "foggier" and cozier, I recommend Mineral Cedar from Scents of Wood. It's got a nice tonka note that really lends itself to a cool, foggy, overcast vibe.

On paper, the cypress is dominant and piney. On my skin, the cypress blends harmoniously with the cedar, balsam fir and oakmoss. It is much more pleasant to my nose on my skin. I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate it on my skin. It is a great daily wear fall and winter fragrance. I love this house ... organic, unique, beautiful, creative, and emotional are words I would use to describe Scents of Wood. The founder, Fabrice is passionate about the house's mission and its execution. I have enjoyed every fragrance from Scents of Wood that I have smelled. Many of the fragrances are also great when layered.

Final Verdict: When evaluating Cypress in Oak, it is clear that the fragrance delivers exactly what it promises: a pristine, rugged, and outdoorsy experience from opening to dry down. It possesses a stoic, masculine profile that beautifully captures the crisp atmosphere of a coniferous forest, and while its performance doesn't quite match the beast-mode longevity of its sibling from yesterday, Vanilla in Bourbon, it still demonstrates a highly respectable level of staying power that will easily carry you through most of the day. However, a dilemma arises when considering its place in my curated collection. While I thoroughly enjoy this profile, I already own Creed’s Royal Oud, which occupies a very similar, ultra-refined woody space. Ultimately, I cannot justify purchasing a full bottle of a fragrance that I likely won't reach for over an established favorite. While it is an exceptional release that I highly recommend to lovers of the genre, for my personal collection, this is one walk in the woods I will have to pass on. This doesn't smell like anything else I have, not even the other cypress scent (Rag & Bone). Despite being woody, it is very fresh and aromatic, and it is not too heavy even for summer because of the evergreen notes. It is pretty unisex, maybe a little masculine leaning but still wearable for me (a woman). It's quite bracing, but then as it softens in the drydown it becomes more comfortable for me. The mineral notes keep it from getting too dense and wintery. Edit: hey I got a compliment on it! We had been working hard and my friend said “wow you still smell so fresh”!

Lovely: true to its image, it's a woody, dry, fresh, fragrant scent, one that I associate with a cold winter day. I agree with other reviewers that it's got its own characteristic spice and I'm scouting around for another sample, the best review of a scent is when I run out of it.

truly devastated that my sample for this has run dry, it's not a terribly realistic wood but it's sweet and slightly spicy in a really unique way. i wish full bottles of scents of wood weren't $240 because i would love to see what else this house has made.

This is a beautiful unisex woodsy fragrance. There’s something very clean about it, and I’m not sure which note/accord that could be. But it smells like laundry and wood.

I really wanted to like this. I'm obsessed with Hinoki in Hinoki from this house but this one has a more sour, citrusy smell to the wood notes. I think it'd be pretty on the right person and it's enjoyable on a test strip but my skin isn't doing it justice. Performance is alright, sillage is pretty good but dies off quickly. The balsam and cypress are strong lingerers which are nice but I prefer Apres from Ellis Brooklyn for these same notes with better performance and for a more affordable price.

The smell is too sickly sweet for me. Not enough balance like some other fragrances from this brand. Very straightforward heavy cypress. More artificial than natural to my nose. Oak in oak, Sandalwood in oak, Vertiver in oak are better.

This one is very sheer on me. What I can detect is cypress like a yarrow bush/evergreen cedar and some fir and cedar in there. It's woody, dirty, airy and really nice, like a summer night outdoors, but oh, so damn faint. Hard to smell at all, even with four sprays to my chest. I rested it for a couple of weeks and retried, and now I get an opening note that smells just like green wet seaweed, followed by a light fresh pine scent with some wood. It's really hard to smell on me, but it's airy and light like a walk in the wood on a very windy day.

It's a rainy, cool, Spring morning. I wanted to wear something woody. I'm not sure what it is about rainy days and woody fragrances, but they just seem to go together well for me. This one is a nice woody fragrance. I get mostly cypress, but it's a pleasant cypress. Very comfortable. Very laid-back. Very Nice.

Opening this up and swatching it, it smells like By the Fireplace by MMM but with a less sweet and more smokey or leathery note. Pretty nice! Very masculine. I think it'd be an amazing home scent but it seems a little intense to wear. Nonetheless, I will try!
