Barfly

I've just bought my 5th bottle of this already. I've been loving their clothing for years and was introduced to this fragrence since they spray it in their stores (Like Abercrombie & Fitch does). I collect and own a ton of fragrances both designer and niche, But still.. this remains my signature scent. The smell just defines me and my friends always say they immediately think of me when they enter/walk past a Scotch&Soda store. I also like the fact that this brand is Dutch, just like me. Smell: 10/10 Projection: 8/10 Sillage: 8/10 Edit: I've been buying at least a bottle a year since it came out (2012), and though I might be mistaking, I feel that the juice has been gradually toned down over the years. It feels slightly less dense, the opening is a now a tiny bit synthetic, and projection is not beastmode anymore (still very good though). But then again, this might just be my nostalgic memory playing tricks on me.

Today i went to the S&S shop, with trying this perfume in mind. As i approached the store this wonderfull scent was blown into my face and without hestation i went into the store and bought it without even trying. I took it home and put it on. It turned out to be the same wonderfull scent they use in their stores. Later that day i had college and put on this scent. Sitting in the corridor with next to some girls (aprox. 5 meters from me), after about 10 minutes one of them said they smelled this wonderfull scent and i just knew it was Barfly and smiled to myself :) I mostly get sandalwood and vanilla out of this. Very likeable scent that reminds me, too, of Abercrombie's Fierce. Not the scnet, moreso the impression. Although my rather short experience with it, i must say the sillage is very good. For longevity it's been 6 hours and still projecting well (arm lenght). 9/10 New favorite

Lots of posturing going on in these comments below. Sure, it's not going to "turn any heads," and could be considered "generic." But to be fair, it's a store brand cologne, and I think it matches up very well with Scotch & Soda's overall branding. I'm not sure where the notion that everything needs to be groundbreaking or outrageous. Maybe it's the mess of notes suggested here. I get citrus, ambrox, bourbon, pepper, lavender, and cedar. Sometimes you just want to smell good. And I think this smells very good! Reminiscent of Jazz Club, but less boozy, more floral, lighter. I wouldn't feel odd wearing this during the daytime. A friend told me about this one. She smelled it and said it felt like she was hugging me. We live on opposite sides of the country now, so perhaps the sentimentality is influencing my perception. But isn't that what it's all about?

I don't consider this to be unique at all. Out of all of the notes listed, I mainly pick up the lavender - though I would say it's a very well blended smell. It's very pleasing indeed and soft. If you're looking for something safe that is likely to please you and those around you - this is a fantastic option. 7/10

A little boozy. Not unisex at all, i would not like my women to smell like that. Not unique but still a very good smell. This makes me think of a cross of Lancome Hypnose, Fierce, Curve. Great presence, 3 sprays and you will get noticed. Good projection and longevity. You can wear this anytime. 8/10

The closest fragrance I can think of to Barfly would be 212 Men, the dry down. But still doesn't quite depict just how wonderful this scent is! Silage and longevity is wonderful, and as mentioned before, does garner a lot of compliments!

This is such an under the radar smell, I absolutely love it because its quite unique. Fresh, woody, powdery with spiciness and musk in the back. Office safe and can be worn as a personal all year round smell.

A great daily sent for the fall. Nice warm sent that really embodies the company it’s self. It just feels like sitting next to a fire in a wood cabin during autumn having a drink.

Zara for Him 2018 version smells exactly like this one. Resemblance is incredible. I smelled it on my brother and thought he bought Barfly. Great dupe.

I bought this as the reed room scent, love it. To me it's very similar to Day lillies in a vase.

Not sure what to make of the plethora of differing opinions below. Doesn't help that the notes above are a bit deceiving too. From the official website: "citrus-herb", lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, cedarwood, musk and "Madagaskar". I wonder if they meant vanilla?? Anyway, found it recently in a rack store here in Canada for shockingly less that 15 bucks for 100 mL so of course I had to pick it up. The scent itself is a wonderfully light marriage of Zara's Majestic Green and the lavender-tonka base from Prada's Luna Rossa Sport. Of course, this one was released before both so it could very well have been the inspiration for those fragrances, because the similarities are pretty obvious. If you missed picking up Majestic Green when it was available, this could be a decent alternative if you find it in the rack stores. Unfortunately, if there is any vanillin in the scent, it only comes out in the FAR drydown and is mainly dominated by the heavy tonka and whatever is giving it that cardamom vibe from Majestic Green. Maybe a TINY touch of the benzoin in MMM's Jazz Club too? It's sweet, but not overly sweet and certainly not boozy as the name would intimate. No obvious citruses or herbs to speak of either, but the opening has this strangely wonderful 90s nostalgia about it, most likely from the lavender and sweet musk. Personally, I find it very comforting; and despite it being in the distant ballpark of something like A&F's Fierce, it's more complex, base-heavy, better balanced and nowhere near as loud. Also no modern woody ambers in the base to ruin the blend thank gawd. Overall, I think it's a great deal for what I paid despite it pushing the generic side a bit; but if you have some of the fragrances mentioned above, you might find it redundant. Great bottle design with a lovely stout atomizer that unfortunately doesn't function as well as it looks. It's quite stiff and puffy actually and the cap is all plastic but clicks into place. If I had to place it, I might class it as an upper tier designer suitable for all ages and genders. Performance is only average but I think it's perfect for what this fragrance is. Something this comfy shouldn't scream. Just don't expect anything hyper unique. It's a decently interesting aromatic tonka scent, nothing more. A strong like. Scent - 7.5/10 Longevity - 6.5/10 Projection - 5.5/10 Overall - 7/10

Barfly is quickly becoming one of my favorite fragrances, and I have to thank Canadian Dude again for bringing this one to my attention. I first tested this in store with the help of a beautiful female sales associate after hearing so many rave reviews. Now I never thought I'd own a 'Made in the Netherlands' fragrance as it says on the bottle, but regardless of where it was made Barfly is an amazing modern oriental fougere that holds its own against the big boys. Think musky vanilla sandalwood, lavender, citrus, spices and a little skanky booziness. Give it a couple minutes to get past the calone top note and it really starts to shine. Longevity is excellent with moderate (right where I like it) projection. FWIW, I don't get any Fierce associations with this at all, besides both being musky. Barfly's musk is more similar to what you'd smell in Moschimo Uomo or Burberry Touch for instance than the laundry musk of Fierce. Overall I rate this very highly and it wears so exceptionally that it's hard to fault to be honest. It's a bargain too which makes it even more impressive, I paid only $27 for my bottle after the Scotch & Soda in-store discount. I'm very curious who the perfumer is on this. Either way, well done S&S.

I walked into a Scotch&Soda shop and the room smelled so amazing that I went on to ask the cashier what it was. She told me it was their room fragrance Barfly which was unfortunately out of stock. They had one set of a small EDT, shower gel and body lotion at a great price so I went for it. Wood and citrus notes dominate here. Now.. I love cosy, powdery, unisex scents all of which this is. The longevity however is weak and it sits close to skin. I find comfort in it and I am overall pleased with it, but my main reservation is it leans too masculine for me so I don't feel comfortable wearing it in an office setting or when going out to meet someone. This could be my home/grocery shopping one. Would love to get this as a room fragrance/candle though!

Sweet and sour all at once, very hipster-like, synthetic and pumped with ISO-E or ambroxan I believe - but I actually like it. Opening fruity and spicy with lemon going through a heart of powdery lavender and jasmine and finally drying down on a base of musk, vanilla and woods. It may be unisex, but definitely leaning masculine. Has a vibe kinda like A&F Fierce, but the smell is quite different - a kind of musky fabric softener (on a different note : I've heard rumors that Scotch and Soda have actually launched a "Barfly laundry detergent"). I imagine the target group to be younger people that do not want to stand out too much. It may not be the nectar of the gods, but a quite safe scent without being overly generic.

Great everyday scent! I tried couple of times in past years and didnt like it much. Somehow today it was very different, and I am loving it. It reminds me very much Emporio Armani He/Lui and Code, moreover has that late 90's early 00's vanilla-violet vibes. It’s like: 60% mid-base of EA - He/Lui and Code (Lavender X Violets (ionones) X Habanolide (hot iron powdery musk) X Sandalwood) 20% mid-base of CH - 212 Men (Violets (ionones) X Habanolide) 10% JPG - Le Male (Lavender x Vanilla) 10% mid-base of A&F - Fierce (Lavender X Sandalwood X Musk) Longevity is decent with moderate projection. I’m def considering a full bottle.

I picked this up yesterday, and I like this stuff. It smells great. Good longevity, very appealing. I'd say this leans more on the masculine side. Beautiful top notes with spices and fruit with a base of vanilla and musk. This is a very appealing scent and not a scent I would have looked at twice, except they had it at my department store and I casually sprayed it on a scent card and thought....'this is nice'. After a full wearing today and yesterday, I'd have to say I will be wearing this in the next few months.

There is a lot going on in here but it is actually really nice. It opens with citrics notes mixed with cedar, followed by my favorite part, the vanilla, which does not last for a long time but adds a lot of dimension. The last residue its floral and airy. I enjoyed a lot how the notes evolved throughout the wear. It does not last that much time thought. In my opinion this is good for autumn or winter if you need some colors around.

This got some hype in 2016 then it died off quickly for good reason. The reason is because it's a safe scent in a world full of safe scent and the house is unknown. A few words to describe this is aromatic,soft and powdery. Performance is average at best and this will not "woo" anyone. My bud scent me a decant of this in late 2016 and it's more than halfway full.

Beautiful cozy powdery scent, feels comfortable like a warm sweater on a cold day. The opening is delicious orange with sandalwood, it’s a playful fresh combination which doesn’t feel heavy. When the short lived citrus is gone, it turns into a beautiful cloud of sandalwood, lavender, iris and vanilla. It lasts for a few hours on my skin. I wish I could keep it (partner is allergic to lavender).

This is so average smelling! Smells like a sticky wood with a bit of citrus, that's it. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone

First, and second, impression? This is the Lipton Tea of fragrances. Meaning!? I THINK it was Lipton's that used to "boast" using 21 different teas in their blend. This protected them from varying crop yield and price fluctuation where buying the cheapest teas and changing the proportions to maximize profit had no noticeable effect on the cheap, generic, mass-marketed beverage. The peasants don't know any better and wouldn't march on Unilever Corporate Headquarters bearing torches and pitchforks but would continue to swill their Frankentea. THIS is Barfly and its 17 main notes! It seems as though Scotch & Soda buy up inexpensive popular synthetic accords, rank stack these ingredients into a juicer, and dribble the result into market-branded flacons releasing them in limited quantity... and quality. For what it is it is embarrassingly expensive -- DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. And I don't care at all for the devastatingly unisex scent either -- DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. A SCENT DESIGNED TO MEAN SOMETHING TO ANYONE MEANS LITTLE TO EVERYONE. Eau De Rous hereby copyrights this! Barfly is the stuff of mall rats with big suburban allowances as well as the signature scent of Euro-trash and perpetual teenager metro-sexual (North) American hipsters with skinny-jeans and part-time jobs who will live with one of their parents as a dependent until the "free" government mandated health insurance (not healthcare) ends. They are indistinguishable, one from each other, male or female, just as this fragrance could earn a profit at any price and be labelled anything from Abercrombie & Fitch to Zara.

After all the recommendations and raving reviews I just had to try this. Two days ago I had the chance to test it at a Scotch & Soda store, and I am glad I did because it saved me from a potential bad blind buy. Perhaps my expectations were more along the lines of the original Michael Kors for Men, but this it NOTHING like that. This is soft, sweet, and not very original at all to be honest. Its performance was also lacking, but that's not the main criterium I'd like to judge a fragrance on. But the scent itself was just a little boring. There is no booziness, no smokiness, and it smells quite synthetic. Now I don't love Michael Kors for Men anymore, as I did before, but at least that has a characteristic smell going for itself. This just does not. Sometimes I wonder whether smelling so many fragrances has made me overly critical towards a lot of scents.

Ok since I see the previous reviews are written by men, I will post one from my feminine point of view: it's definitely on the masculine side. Don't get me wrong, I adore wearing unisex every once in a while, but this the kind of "naked male" masculine. "Naked male just out of the shower when he used shower gel as a shampoo" to be exact. There is vanilla, there are some woods and it is not smelling of overly cheap chemicals - nevertheless, all the other notes make this one just too stingy sneery fresh for me. The SA told me a female skin would make it softer, but mine didn't make it soft enough for me, apparently. So to my fellow ladies; just try before you buy.

Generic perfume just got a whole lot genericer.

Barfly is a product of unusual mixology, from the fusion zesty lemon hint. To the mystical lavenders we all know & love. Barfly is a truly innovating fragrance that clashes with modern & class. It’s kind of like that Febreze commercial that makes you want to spray everything. I think it’s an outstanding product & ill definitely be back for more. Thank you Scotch & Soda. RichSaintx.

Why is nobody mentioning the Cedrat Boise similarity? It's the closest reference point to Barfly. I absolutely love this scent, and prefer it personally to Cedrat Boise. The performance here used to be heaps better, which leads me to believe a reformulation happened...

Experienced this at a Scotch and Soda boutique this evening The opening was fresh and enlivening. It quickly dried down to something with a hint of stale cigarette.. The entire scent disappeared in 40 minutes More suited for men than ladies, in my opinion

I like it, did not have much of longevity, which I don't really mind, Definitely leans more towards the masculine side, which is why I was hesitant whether to buy it or not as it was a bit too masculine for my taste for a unisex perfume.

great for summer in the city,casual but strong and noticiable,I dont see a single bit of feminity here, this is for men,and yes, without smelling the same is on the vibes of Fierce by Abercrombie,guess I,ll end up getting a bottle

Its a mix of bunch of notes i couldn’t care to name. But it smell very pleasant and no one will roll eyes. Lasts good 4-5 hours with medium to low projection. I would buy again if 50ml was not bloody 100AUD
