Fils de Joie

This is my first Lutens and the brand couldn't have made a better impression. If you're a jasmine lover, particularly a strong, heady, seductive jasmine adorer who also appreciates a rich honey in their fragrances, then stay tuned: you'll love Fils de Joie as much as I do. I've given away a lot with the above comment, but in short: the perfume opens with a wonderful, heady scent of night blooming jasmine and regular soft jasmine, accompanied by a hint of ylang-ylang. That hint becomes strong enough in the sensual heart to overpower the jasmine accord, giving way to a thickly honeyed ylang-ylang with the blooming jasmine on a summer night in the background. The dry down adds a hint of clean musk that merely prevents all notes to become indolic. Fils de Joie is the ideal combination of sensually seductive and sophistication. This isn't screaming sleezy vamp messing with your libido, but belongs with a mature woman embracing her femininity, feeling sexy and empowered by it. I'm using woman and femininity because I think the majority of noses will label FdJ overtly feminine leaning. But I can completely imagine this being heartbreakingly sexy on a man. While I sadly experienced anosmia with this fragrance, every 'fresh nose' outside or quick movement of my body introduced me anew to this fragrance, that went from brand-new to 'top fave' in the span of an hour. If your olfactory senses do the same, don't worry: you'll keep a scent bubble that's noticeable when moving your arms or when your hair is being ruffled or lifted by a breeze for example. In a way it reminds me of Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules that often couldn't be perceived by its wearers, or only every now and then. However, purposefully putting your nose to dab spot gives me that glorious, sweet smell as well if I've cleared my senses. I even noticed her during the night, thinking sleepily what on earth smelled so delicious - only to fall back asleep again with a smile on my face. It says it all: Fils de Joie's longevity is great, so truly test your nose before reapplying. As I can count the perfumes that last me over 8hrs on one hand (almost 200 bottle collection pre declutter) due to my very dry, perfume eating skin, the performance of this Sheldrake creation is worth some applause. The projection and sillage are quite decent as well. Not beastmode, but FdJ is certainly capable of giving you a lovely arm length projection with only a handful of pulse point dabs*. On my skin, that's astonishing. I put an asterisk* after 'dabs' as there's one small - or big depending how you look at it - issue with Fils de Joie. I've no idea if it's my skin chemistry, as this issue confuses the heck out of me. BUT...I can't spray this fragrance. Well, sure, I cóuld. But after having dabbed it three days, mixing it with spraying for three days one thing has become abundantly clear: dabbing Fils de Joie gives me the yummy scent I described above. Using the atomiser and spraying on my pulse points - or wherever actually - makes me want to scrub with the speed of light. Spraying gives me an extremely strong chalky, throat irritating saliva-ish scent accord from the musk with a soft jasmine that's barely noticeable. That disgusting start becomes even worse when we enter heart and dry down > that simply smells like... urine. The saliva note disappates almost completely after an hour, but the rest of the weird dirty musk remains, together with the piss note, for a good three hours. It's around that time when Fils de Joie becomes a softer projected fragrance anyway, making the finally (!) similar dry down to the dabbing days (just less intense and less sensually sweet) almost useless. I mean: I had to stay home due to physical issues and could test sprays. But no one in their right mind wants to noticeably smell like a combination of chalk, saliva and piss for three hours straight. No, not éven when it's niche. I really do not understand the reason behind this, but be warned: it could mean that FdJ simply performs best in concentrated spots and reacts badly when coming into contact with bigger stretches of skin if you have, like me, the 'wrong' chemistry. It means that it's best to test both ways before you decide to declutter this otherwise gorgeous scent. It's a bummer as dabbing, in this case holding the opening of the bottle against the skin of my pulse points, and pulling it upright again, is a spill waiting to happen. And with the bloodred colour of this juice that's very very tricky (I advise pre-wardrobe application in any case). Applying like that also costs me more perfume. But... I've been looking for a great sweet & sexy jasmine fragrance for years. Fils de Joie more might be a simple juice, but it's a luscious concoction and practically 'made for me'. I'll dab it. Prices of Lutens fragrances aren't exactly low, but in comparison to the bizarre pricetags other niche brands hang around their bottles, the Frenchman isn't asking too ridiculous amounts. When you're wiling to take the risk to go for a discount grey market 50ml bottle you're usually paying regular designer perfume prices, not niche ones (though I quite often play it safe, like now, and get my perfume via well known shops like Notino or the brand shop, as we Europeans don't have that fascinating luxury of returning an opened box and - gasp - used bottle!). Besides: the quality of ingredients is obvious here, and I was rather pleased with the projection & longevity, making me soon forget I could have normally bought 5 Middle Eastern fragrances for the same amount this 100ml cost me. To me Fils de Joie falls in the categories as long as you're able and wiling to spend such a big amount untested (I couldn't get a sample, but loved the pyramid and read and watched many reviews) and . I can't wait to build a small collection of Serge Lutens' if Fils de Joie is any indication.

I do not know what to make of the official Lutens description, which I will reproduce here, just so you too can marvel over the obliquity in the event that you missed it up top: "Laughter awaits a phrase, a word, a situation proclaim itself. A laugh may burst forth or be stifled by a hand that tries to contain it. But if it is sincere, it cannot be contained." -- Serge Lutens I also keep puzzling over the name, fils de joie, which literally means "son of joy" in French but carries with it the association of prostitution, insofar as it's obviously a play on "fille de joie," daughter of joy in French--and a well-known term for a young female sex worker. So I put together the name with the gnomic description of uncontainable laughter, and I try to reconcile all these things with the scent, which is a mildly camphorous tuberose, a mildly skanky honeyed jasmine, and a musk that reminds me for all the world like hot buttered popcorn and a hint of fish. I get that intermittently, though, and for the most part I would describe this as a softer, friendlier version of Carnal Flower. I don't regret buying a travel-size sprayer, but I don't see myself buying a full bottle anytime soon, if ever. I greatly prefer Serge Lutens Fille de Berlin, which is also that same impractical but gorgeous cranberry red--you can't spray this on pale fabric, that's for sure. It's better on skin than paper anyway. Update: I keep thinking about whether this perfume is as unisex as marketed. Maybe in some cultures, but I just can't imagine my husband wearing it, or any other straight man I know. Not to say that they can't or shouldn't--I guess I just think of white florals as hyperfeminine, and it would take a great deal of conditioning for me to think otherwise. I'm enjoying this a lot more today, perhaps because it's warmer. The honey note is downright beautiful. Update: Wearing again today, and liking it more all the time. I still smell a slightly mentholated or campor-ish note that makes me think of tuberose, but my husband thought it smelled of incense. That's possibly also because he's used to jasmine-scented incense, of course. Update: I heard it was being discontinued or reformulated under a slightly different name, so I bought a 50-ml tester. I told myself I was on a no-buy, but I knew I will be very sad when my travel-sprayer runs out and I can't buy another bottle. There is just something about that honey/jasmine note that sends me. I do not regret buying the full bottle; if anything I regret not buying two if it has indeed been discontinued. I was wrong about this before, and the musk is nowhere near as horrible as I had described it; even though there is a bit of animalic skank lurking in the heady, mildly indolic jasmine, it is not fishy at all. There are no green notes as in Carnal Flower, and I don't know why I thought there was tuberose. I think I registered it that way at first because of the ylang-ylang/jasmine(s) juggernaut. The longer I own this fragrance, the more the honey notes sing on my skin. If you love the scent of fresh raw honey and pollen-laden white and yellow florals, you will enjoy this, but the reviewers above who say that this is almost too much is right. I work from home, but I think if I worked in an office I would feel self-conscious about choking people out with this brazen hussy juice.

After searching through at least 1000 fragrances to find my dream scent, I could never find it. So I used to envision in my imagination the smell of what my perfect scent would be. I knew it was a yellow floral that smelt like summertime florals, but realistic florals, complete with pollen and sunshine - in my head it encapsulated what nectar must taste like to hummingbirds. I’ve been smelling my imagined scent in my mind for decades. Then I smelt Fils De Joie and instantly recognised it “it smells like summertime” was my exclamation. I’d found my signature scent, I used to wish I found a scent like the sweetly fragrant Daphne’s in my garden. But everything until now smelt synthetic or sweetened by vanilla (which I can’t stand). Fils De Joie is the perfect level of sweet, as it’s done with golden honey so there’s zero reliance on vanilla, amber or tonka. It smells like yellow mimosa pollen from every intoxicating floral that comes to life in the heat of a summer garden. It encapsulates the essence of pollinated flowers and floral nectar after the scorching sun has left the flowers throbbing in the heat of the night. And the plus is - it’s relatively affordable for 100ml of divine French perfumery and it’s beast-mode, as it lasts of fabric for weeks. It’s all I ever wanted. Only potential downsides - it’s very feminine, so not sure if an Aventus-loving man can pull this off and although it came out in 2020, it smells like classic perfumery from a golden era gone by, so might be too classically grand for some (?). I’m clutching at straws to find downsides as it’s perfect. Update: So this is officially being discontinued. Only 4 years of greatness and now it’s being pulled. I’ve tried recreating this by layering jasmine with honey scents but I’ve given up. Nor am I bulk-buying what’s left, as one day I won’t be able to get hold of it altogether, so I’ll just give it up now so I don’t get too attached. Such a shame. Back to searching for my signature scent. I’m selling within Canada if anyone is interested.

Serge Lutens is no stranger to playing jokes and word games on us. Fils de Joie certainly seems like another one of his tricks. The "Son of Joy" might actually be a reference to a prostitute (might is an understatement). This is a lot more believable than anything referencing "joy" since FdJ is anything but joyous. The jasmine of FdJ has had all daylight, citrus piquancy and energy, and smiling innocent white floral qualities removed from it. FdJ is one of the darkest, muskiest, driest, slinkiest and lascivious jasmines I've smelled. We are all (hopefully, by now) familiar with one of jasmine's critical qualities, that of being indolic, presenting as very dryly musky and coarse-smelling like mothballs. FdJ revels in this seedy character. In the opening there is a very cold, woody clove note - seemingly the same material and trick Sheldrake used in A la Nuit - that makes the dry and indolic qualities even colder and drier. The starchy banana character of ylang-ylang presents itself in the heart and through to the base, adding thicker texture and also a touch of grainy sweetness, while soapy white musks continue to parch your palate of all moisture. So, yes, nothing that can really be called joyous or joyful in FdJ, it is far too dry and far too debauched to be joyful. Some might discern that it is too "old lady" like, interpretting the dryness for powderiness, and that's not entirely inaccurate, but it's far too heady, heavy, and dirty-musky to be palatable for the gentile elderly. I cannot help but be allured by its sultry side-smile character. Just when we thought Lutens and Sheldrake likely didn't have anything else, or anything more, to say on jasmine they give us another masterful example that comfortably sits side-by-side with Sarrasins and A La Nuit, and a very sound example of their tremendous ability to interpret and handle this amazing flower of nature and perfumery.

When falling prey to a vampire, I would assume that there is some sort of hypnosis that gets you into this predicament. Your adrenaline is pumping and you want your fight or flight responses to take action, but your paralysis keeps you motionless before the inevitable and fatal bite. This feeling of irresistible surrender is what Serge Lutens’s Fils de Joie evokes for me – a hypnotic and dense fragrance so intoxicating and so narcotic that you feel as though she is doing you a favor in sucking you dry. The bottle houses a deliciously evil and deep, dark red juice conjures up that cursed button with “do not press” written underneath. The fragrance opens with a sticky, soaked, red cherry, at times both medicinal and syrupy sweet. The overture of cherry makes way for the heady and narcotic florals composed of Night Blooming Jasmine, Jasmine Sambac, and Ylang-Ylang to come into the fore. Among this floral bouquet, Night Blooming Jasmine is the light that shines through, its aroma evoking the humid sweetness of summer nights. Yet, beneath this beauty, a faint indolic facet, reminiscent of mothballs, begins to emerge, hinting at a darker motive and a sense of fleeting time. These waxy, white petals are not light; but in fact, they are seeping with honey. While the idea of a honeyed jasmine scent sounds innocent enough, this fragrance reveals itself to be unctuous and devilish on skin. At the cadence of its wear, Fils de Joie settles into a sweet, skin musk – a faint whisper of what it once was, leaving you craving its return. You don’t reapply Fils de Joie because you simply want to, but because you need to relive that experience once again – hence the name narcotic white florals. For those innocent bystanders who stand in the way of this fragrance, beware, for they will be drowned by a concoction of indolic white florals and honey–I can think of worse ways to die.

I've given myself time to truly live with this fragrance—to let it unfold across seasons, across moods—and somewhere along the way, I’ve become utterly enchanted. What began as curiosity has turned into quite an obsession. The first time I tried this fragrance it was winter. I caught a strange, powdery-rubber note that felt jarring and unfamiliar, and I washed it away instantly. But even then, I sensed something deeper—something masterfully blended whispering beneath that odd surface. I couldn’t quite let go. Not yet. Not with Serge Lutens. When spring crept in and the air softened, I gave it another chance. It opens with a veil of powder, like the faded elegance of vintage makeup—delicate, a little ghostly. I usually love that effect, but here, it felt off at first. Jasmine, my forever favorite, is present—but not the jasmine I know. The night-blooming jasmine in perfume often comes with a scratchy, almost artificial edge. It doesn't echo the intoxicating breath of real jasmine unfurling in the dark. I think that powdery sharpness is what unsettled me. And yet—beneath it all, something beautiful stirs. Give it time. Let it breathe. After thirty minutes, the top note dissolves like mist at dawn, revealing a heart that is utterly spellbinding: a rich, honeyed, luminous white floral that feels almost juicy in its depth. Not gourmand, but lush in a way that feels alive. Like standing beneath a jasmine vine at dusk, petals heavy with nectar, the air thick with sweetness. It lingers. Oh, how it lingers—twelve hours or more on skin, and even longer on fabric. This scent doesn’t simply last—it evolves, it tells a story. And now, it’s one I want to live in again and again. This fragrance does remind me of Byredo’s Casablanca Lily, but Fils de Joie is far more opulent and enduring, with a richness that lingers long after the first spray.

Man, it is SO PLAYFUL, gorgeous.. rocking my day right now as I listen to Beyonce's Cuff It ... "I feel like falling in love I'm in the mood to fuck something up I need some drink in my cup.." What a naughty, irresponsible, happy song and fragrance! Maybe I wasn't ready to fully appreciate this playful-serious-naughty side of it, and myself !! - till now : "Son of Joy" Serge Lutens ~ Fils de Joie Such an unexpectedly playful, salubrious elixir! 🤸💃💪😜 An opening spice sparkle lightly dusted over a dry honey that segues back and forth into a heart, no several hearts, of jasmine, night-blooming, redolent, but never cloying and the disarming, sweet green peppery flowering of ylang-ylang.. Jasmine, ylang-ylang and honey so masterfully handled it will sway any man or woman sitting on the fence regarding these intense essences. There is also a light, persistent whisper of musk, restrained aphrodisiac-at-a-distance, refined like desert breeze through the window.. All the components of this adagio combine into a very, very comforting yet characterful modern perfume .. An accord seemingly linear yet not at all boring, it envelopes me in a protective veil of good humour. Distinctive, dry and sweet at the same time and deeply enjoyable.. How rare is that? Le Maitre, Serge Lutens is back at the top of his craft.. Fils de Joie belies his maturity, his poise and it sits beautifully with me. a spontaneous laugh.. rare but bursting out nonetheless, irrepressible in the face of life and its jaded pretence. OMG THIS IS INTOXICATING Uncle Serge has finally got his groove back! This is the sweetest, stickiest, earthy honey jasmine. Some might find it gross but I could bathe in it. It melts into my skin and radiates a little bubble of earth goddess fertility around me. I feel like I hear drum beats and belly dancers. I might be pregnant. It does stain so this is definitely a (carefully sprayed) skin-only scent. Longevity is moderate and sillage seems moderate to low. The earthy honey quality is a little reminiscent of Chergui (without tobacco but that type of sweetness and honey). The jasmine is reminiscent of A La Nuit and Sarrasins but even more sultry. It's kind of like a mash-up of the honey from Miel de Bois (without urine and woods) with A La Nuit and it does come together into a vintage Poison kind of way. But it's Uncle Serge through and through. He's up to his old tricks. LOVE IT! UPDATING to add that after 2 hours this becomes a very close skin scent and the jasmine lessens. It remains very sweet and earthy almost like a subdued and slightly floral Miel de Bois. I still love it but am a bit disappointed by the performance. Given that it stains you cannot spray on fabric to boost the longevity. Updating to share that after wearing this for about 2 months, this is basically SL Sarrasins + earthy sweet honey and it really does remind me of vintage Dior Poison parfum. It's truly intoxicating and the very definition of sexy for me. I wish it had better longevity though because I've already used half the bottle from frequent reapplication. Although I love it so much I would definitely buy it again. Fils de Joie is stunning.

I bought a 100ml (blind buy :')) from Jomashop for like $92 grand total and I'm not even mad. It's so unique, both scent and that blood red liquid is just crazy to me. It didn't stain my skin, so I'm pretty happy about that. By first spray, I was like oh this is really pretty, but it's deepening up on both clothing and skin! It smells the same on both and both the night blooming jasmine and the honey seem fairly balanced :). It really reminds me of Lenore from Castlevania, not so much Carmilla. I'd give Carmilla a stronger and edgier SG scent, maybe one with leather+jasmine O-o. But yeah, this one is givinggggg Lenore, what I feel like she'd either wear or just naturally smell like <3ԅ( ̄『 ̄ԅ). Lenore seems more lowkey to me rather than in your face like the other sisters, lowkey as in the most level-headed out of all of them, certainly not a weak scent. Also, I was worried about getting choked out since people describe it as a "deep scent" but it's really not doing that for me at all. It's aromatic but deep at the same time; and the honey doesn't make it overly sweet at all, and sweet sweet scents annoy me :(. It just rounds out the scent. NO REGRETS. LOVE IT. I feel that this perfume was created to tell the perfume world that everything made of jasmine is one side of this one. I could nt have imagined that night blooming jasmine would be so natural in a perfume bottle. Certainly, in my opinion, as well as most perfume lovers, the similarity of a scent to its natural form in the surrounding world is a great advantage. We test most of the perfumes one after the other so that we can finally relive the memories of the past with one of them. Well enough! Do not look again. This is the perfume that will remind you of all the memories you have with night blooming jasmine. I don't need to write more for this wonderful feature. This is the missing perfume of the jasmine world that you are looking for. It is sweet, but not like the sticky honey inside the pyramid! Sweet as the nectar of Honeysuckle. For me, this perfume is a combination of honeysuckle and night blooming jasmine. This perfume may seem linear and simple, but it is complex. This naturalness, which remains after the complexity of synthesis and extraction, so stunningly captivates you with its simplicity and beauty. The process of this perfume is linear, but due to its naturalness and uniqueness, not only will you not get tired, but like smelling a flower in your hand and constantly bringing your nose to it, you will repeat this process on your skin. I will be brief. There is no more time to talk. It's time to test and enjoy. right now👌

I have my own collection of fragrances and tested a lot. Personally I feel that fragrances with inspired stories behind them are the ones that really capture my attention because they are more meaningful and artful. Also, inspired fragrances come across to me as familiar and new at the same time. They cross boundaries and time and Fils de Joie is one of them. I was primarily intrigued with the story behind this fragrance. If I am not mistaken, it is Serge Lutens' personal history as a child of joy despite not knowing his father. Having tested and now have a full bottle I can understand the story of joy and romance in a bottle which only a night blooming jasmine and honey can re-create though Serge Lutens' artform. On my skin this opens to a bright grapelike scent, more like a herald for the Queen of the night to arrive and once the fizz settles...the intoxicating night blooming jasmine reveals herself in full bloom. Wearing this in a cool summer night gives me an aura of mystery. Spellbinding! Great silage ang longevity (6-8hours on my skin) To me, this fragrances brings me back to South East Asia where I grew up. Of hot humid nights in the jungle surrounded by fireflies, crickets and the distinct scent of night blooming jasmine. Of golden brown skinned women with jet black hair wearing silk sarongs. Of ritual offerings and incense. Of Joy and Romance. Fils de Joie is a masterpiece for me! A fragrance that captures and defines me.

At first, I was just hit with straight cold cream grandmother vibes. I had some family say it was horrible or too “old lady”, and the fragrance has a tendency to go Very musky, but then I rinsed off the top layer (not scrubbed) and let it rest for about 20 minutes and she just bloomed so beautifully! That same family was suddenly complimenting it. It became almost like yellow/white frangipanis in full bloom with a beautiful jasmine bouquet. I wore this outside on a hot summer night (imo this fragrance’s ideal season/time) and it was absolutely fantastic; sultry, mysterious, and downright beautiful. I imagine an early era Hollywood starlet, seductive maroon and velvet, and warm nights. Unfortunately, sometimes I wear it when i’m not freshly showered or I haven't rinsed off the top layer of fragrance (something that really improves the scent on my skin) and it gets way too indolic, like, my boyfriend told me I smelt like bellybutton and stinky feet and was so shocked when I told him it was the same scent as the day prior (which he had loved). It lasts absolutely forever, from 8am to 12am for me, and can definitely choke some people out if you’re not careful. (( also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but the dry down smells exactly like the flowers scent inserts in build a bears. Identical! ))

Thanks to a fellow Fragrantician, who has been incredibly generous with decants, I have fallen in love with Fils de Joie. It sort of confused me at first. Similar to the poster below me, my mind expects rose, and before I looked up the notes, I thought I smelled it, though it was clear that honey was a big note too. Now that I own a full bottle and can spray more lavishly, I mostly get the honey and the two jasmines. It really is delicious - sweet but not overly so. Not gourmand, yet still delectable. Odd thing for me is that as it dries down, I swear I smell incense! I don't mind at all because whatever magic is causing me to detect it works really well. This is definitely one of those sniff my wrist all day fragrances. Not that it doesn't last or isn't noticeable. It's more that I just can't get enough of it. I get very decent longevity from this, even with my perfume eating skin, and I definitely smell it surrounding me as well, so I'd say sillage is at least arms length. Lasts longer on clothing but proceed with caution. Given the deep red color, this will most likely stain light colors. I purchased the smaller bottle but now I wish I went for the larger one. It may disappoint those who are accustomed to Serge's more daring fragrances, but I'm enchanted by it, to say the least!

Fils de joie is a cinematic potion of a fragrance. In my mind's eye it conjures a series of alluring images of a dark, damp jungle flooded by a red light, as if filtered by the juice of this fragrance. You might look at the notes and scoff "ah, another sweet white floral...groundbreaking..." and yet you would have never been more wrong. This is jasmine trying to pass as a spicy rose trying to pass as jasmine. This is a blood red jasmine. If there was a deep red panther orchid, this is what it would smell like. It opens with animalic, honey-soaked jasmine that transformes into a spicy, jammy, musky rose mimicking jasmine. The spiciness emerging from the opening comes across as camphor. It's as if there were faint traces of star balm underneath. Fils de joie is neither linear nor nonlinear, it displays all of its facets and then blends all of them as you wear it. The ylang-ylang is late to the party and some may not even realize she stopped by. Jasmine, honey, rose, camphor, civet. Luring, lulling, hypnotizing. It is fundamentally of the night. One for the ages, I would say, if it hadn't already been discontinued. Truly a shame, I think this is by far the best "white" floral from Lutens, one that outshines and 'outnights' A la Nuit. Love, love, love.

The moment this scent left the atomizer, I knew I needed it. Honestly, I didn’t even wait to experience the full development from top to dry down—something about it struck me instantly. For me, it was pure nostalgia. Growing up in the Caribbean, there was a white-flowered plant, possibly a type of jasmine, that had a magical quality. When the breeze was just right, its sweet, honeyed scent filled the air. Fils de Joie captures that memory perfectly. Now, about the scent itself—this is sweet, honeyed, and powdery with a definite vintage feel. The jasmine and white florals weave through the composition constantly, but they don’t dominate. Instead, the honey takes center stage, with jasmine and ylang-ylang providing rich, luminous support. It’s beautifully blended, has amazing performance, and remains fairly linear throughout wear. This fragrance leans feminine, but not in a light or girlish way—it’s femme fatale feminine, bold and confident. That said, it’s a polarizing scent. Some will love it, others will find it overwhelming, so definitely not a blind buy. And one last tip: wear dark clothes with this, especially black or deep red. Wow. This is so beautiful! The night blooming jasmine and ylang ylang with the warmth and sweetness of the honey and musk in the is seriously intoxicating. It's vampy, sensual, sexy and bewitching. I'm absolutely obsessed with this fragrance. Camphor is not in the notes but to my nose there is a camphor-y nuance in the opening that stays throughout the duration of its longevity, but it becomes very light as it dries down. I find it to be very calming and almost healing. I got it this summer - I found a great deal on a 100ml bottle on fragrancenet and bought it immediately. I can't wait to wear this in colder weather. This will absolutely be a fragrance that I repurchase when my bottle gets low. It's a very unique jasmine fragrance imo. As it's not the traditional jasmine note and night blooming jasmine has a different scent to it. It's absolutely stunning. Edit// The longevity is amazing! That says a lot bc my skin literally eats fragrances so quickly but this lasts hours and hours on me. Fils de Joie is without a doubt one of my favorite purchases this year. Also, I'm obsessed with the shade of the juice! I don't recommend spraying on your clothes - it will stain.

It's true that Fils de Joie at first seems at its core a honeyed, sultry jasmine, but what truly exalts it is an equal measure of ylang ylang that bursts onto this lustful scene thirty minutes in. It's what really stands out at least to my nose while it's on my own skin. Fils de Joie (Pronunciation: fis də ʒwa, meaning "son of joy" or....rentboy!?) pulsates and throbs. It's so heady and narcotic, with the overripe, pungent, almost rubbery voluptuousness of ylang ylang, it's brown speckled bananas in the forbidden garden. Overapplied, it may induce delirium, so beware. Jasmine indoles collide with the honey, making this rentboy a bit eager. Two hours in, and it's mostly ylang ylang and honey with whispers of jasmine and ever growing heaving muskiness. It's dirty and sweet, oh yeah, and it is banging my gong and makes me want to get it on. Fils de Joie demonstrates Christopher Sheldrake's time-tested technique for bridging the dichotomy between the sweet and seductive, treading that wire so intensely but deliciously. This would be right at home for those with a penchant for those baroque honey-floral chypres of the 80s and would be scourge to namby-pamby noses.

This was the first scent I bought when I joined this site. I blind bought based on the notes and had no idea what I was getting into. I found it a bit overwhelming and set it aside for a couple years. Now it has blended into a single note, an undeniable force, the eternal pulsating resonant wave of sound from one plucked string; this scent is a siren. When I'm feeling impish I wear a single spray applied to my torso, far from my nose. I guess you could call the scent linear because it does not change, it just pulses throughout the day and is the same whenever I become aware of it, but it is not boring. It evokes nothing so much as old cartoons that show a perfume become a long endless silky glove moving through the air toward its target where it becomes a graceful hand beckoning with a finger that will not be ignored. If you've ever wondered what scent could possibly have that kind of power, this is it. Serge found it. I find it amusing to hear this described as "vintage." I suppose it is, if the vintage you're thinking of is Jean Harlow braless and bouncy in a long satin gown. I repeat, this scent is a siren. Hold onto it.

I couldn't resist buying this fragrance from my favorite brand because of an amazing deal. I was pretty ambivalent to it at first. I got mono-jasmine that felt somewhat boring and flat. All I could say is "pleasant" and was wondering WTH am I going to do with 100 mL bottle. But today I wore it outdoors for the first time during a sunny 80 degree day. And oh my God, how spectacular it became! I finally got honey, lots and lots of it. Turns out fresh jasmine and honey is a gorgeous combination. Contrary to popular opinion here, I think this fragrance loves warmth and sunshine! And I finally get the name - this is such a joyful, happy scent, somewhat unusual for Serge Lutens. Today this fragrance swept me off my feet. What a masterpiece! I am so happy I got that huge bottle now! Edit 10 hours after applying. IT LASTS! Barely anything lasts on me, but Fils de Joie does. It's been over 10 hours, and it's still here and not as a skin scent. Beautiful jasmine and musk in the drydown. I love it so much that I briefly considered selling all of my stuff and just stick to this and other Lutens'.

What I am getting here is a smoky Jasmine. As the reviewer below I also thought jasmine was a cheap floral but this is NOT so with this fragrance. This does not lean in any gender direction at all, any one could wear this and I do love It being a woman in my 60’s I have always had a thing for SL fragrances through my fragrance journey and this does not disappoint. I get the different jasmine in here and I’m thinking the honey gives it an almost smoky touch...now mind you this is not a tobacco smoky but a beautiful honeyed smoke with musk underlying. Boy, do I love this! ❤️. It can lean a bit tropical because of the ylang ylang but not your usual suntan scent either. Unfortunately like all SL’s they don’t last super long on my skin but with a bit of lotion and spraying on clothes it does project and can last up to 6 to 8 hours! If you want a keeper this one is it for me. Genderless floral and I am loving it! 😍. Highly recommend 9/10 only because you have to add the lotion to last!

This spectacular fragrance makes me feel, and smell, like a honeypot. It's a love potion, attracting everyone, insect and human. I wear it just as much in the day as in the evening. After the initial carnal honeyed thrill, it dries down to an exquisite floral nectar. Putting my wrist to my nose is an almost identical experience to burying my head into the heart of our garden flowers. Which is why the butterflies often mistake me for one. In the warmer months I spend an inordinate amount of time gently helping them relocate onto nearby petals, so that they can taste the actual nectar they need. This is one of the most beautiful, long lasting, seductive jasmine fragrances ever created, it can be worn all year round, and if you wear this masterpiece in the heat of summer you could be a butterfly whisperer too. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋 Ps. SO BEAUTIFUL IT MAKES YOU ACHE WITH JOY. PLEASURE THAT EXHAUSTS YOUR SENSES. My first serge lutens. The reviews sold me. I bought it blind. Spraying it over many days I continued to stay unimpressed. It was overpowering too much but not enough .. simply couldn't connect with it. Upon dabbing, I was completely intoxicated. It's a different creation altogether. I can't imagine not having it. Its heady narcotic bewitching inviting breathtaking arresting luxurious with abundance of pleasure. You want to give in surrender to it go dizzy completely has you under its spell. It's like you are dripping in white floral nectar and so much more. You will gladly knowingly do all things wrong under its spell. Someone around me right away said this is nightblooming jasmine (which btw is not even related to jasmine). You cannot mistake it its pure quality. I am so glad I have it. Please dab to know its full beauty.

Very roughly speaking, Fils de Joie is about sweet, honeyed flowers covering a pissy base. It may sound feminine, but in reality it isn't. To me, FdJ tells a sultry story of debauchery, how sweet and joyful it can be before you realize that all is vain and empty, florals giving way to the animalic, musky base. Considering that Fils de Joie might mean a male prostitute, I find it a very apt name. It might not sound like a positive review, but in reality I love it - it is challenging, might be cloying in hot weather, but in the right context or when a certain mood strikes, it can be truly comforting and engaging. I noticed that a lot of people draw comparisons to Zoologist's Bee, however, I find them strikingly different, despite the omnipresent honey. The Bee is much more waxy and, well, evoking beehive, while FdJ feels more like honey-drenched flowers. They both strike completely different strings.

Love at first sniff! Smells exactly like Indian jasmine with a touch of honey. I get that some people would think this is too sweet for the summer, but this is a warm weather fragrance through and through simply because of where it takes me, specifically to a stone carved temple surrounded by night-blooming jasmine plants, on a full moon night, the moon and the oil lamps being the only source of light, and the air thick with the smell of the jasmine. I think it's a cultural thing, I see some other reviews from South/South-east Asian folks that are familiar with night blooming jasmine, and associate it with warmer weather. Not a safe wear by any means, you really need to love jasmine as it is basically the only note I pick up. Perfect for loose white and beige linen and gold jewelry. Lasts decently long, I would say around 6-7 hours.

I'm in love. This is the best fragrance I've found in the past 5 years. Maybe even the past 20. I am not rational about this one. I tried it for the first time last month and I can't believe how amazing it is. I will never, ever say a fragrance is "full bottle worthy" until and unless I personally have purchased it. Unless I have paid the price myself for it, how can I tell anyone else to spend their money? But this. I can, whole-heartedly, completely, unreservedly, say that Fils de Joie is full bottle worthy *and* backup bottle worthy. I've found The One. This is my Neo, my precious, I can't let it out of my sight forever and ever amen. This is jasmin-y perfection, the drydown is the most gorgeous thing. This really isn't a coherent review. I love it. This is not just a perfume, this is a whole experience. One or two sprays on warm skin and this takes me to a hot sticky summer night in Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, a Santorini-like village with cobbled narrow lanes, with very old quirky cafés that play Andalusian-inspired music called "Malouf" and where a lot of houses grow bushes of "misk el-leil" or cestrum nocturnum a.k.a night-blooming jasmine over their fences, which has a honyied sweet and floral aroma and frangrances the old village during the hot summer period. This stuff is pure magic, sorcery, but requires warm skin and warm air otherwise it smells too harsh and camphorish in the cold. Wear a few drops behind your ears or knees on a hot summer night especially if you're holidaying in Greece, North Africa, etc. I reiterate; this stuff is magic and an aphrodisiac.

A honeyed bouquet of jasmines. Quite the opposite of a pretty and airy white floral, Fils de Joie is a perfume with bass and reverb. It's a bit too... saturated? for floral realism, but close enough that my friends described the smell as "pollen". Interestingly, they also made a comparison to hard candy in the trail, which I could see. For me, the closest scent association I could make was unpasteurized honey, still carrying the scent of the flowers visited by the bees. If you like Lust by Lush, this will probably scratch a similar itch. They're both jasmine-centric fragrances with a supporting ylang-ylang, skew warm and sweet, and have strong projection. They'll also both stain your clothes! For me, an unsurprising love, and when I'm through with Lust, I'll likely buy this as a replacement.

This is my first niche perfume and my first true love and desire. Fils de Joie evokes feelings of joy, hence the name. It is sweetened with honey which is very prominent, there's two jasmines which are the strongest with first few hours, drydown is mainly honey and musk - quite simple, yet elegant and opulent. I completely adore how this fragrance makes me feel, it is an ultimate femme fatale perfume. While wearing it, I picture myself as a confident and strong woman, whom no problems bother. In my opinion, this is one of the best SL releases, therefore it pains me to hear that this may be discontinued. I purchased back-up bottles just because of the rumors, and I have never done that in the past. It just tells you how precious it is for me to be able to smell like Fils de Joie.

The only fragrance I know that I would call truly romantic. Fils de Joie represents the beautiful contrast between seduction, and sensuality. Of course one leads to another, but seduction is not as direct and dirty. The seductive part of this beauty is definitely the white musk, ylang-ylang and jasmine accompanied by honey/beeswax. It's sweet and mysterious, it invites the wearer to see what's behind the mask, and oh my is it worth finding out! The sensual part is of course the night blooming jasmine (once again) accompanied by honey/beeswax (the longer the fragrance wears, the closer it gets to the beeswax side of honey used in here). It's dirty, directly sexual and erotic, very dark and animalistic. My favourite fragrance when it comes to modern Serge Lutens.

I've been searching for a realistic jasmine scent and this is it. I wanted a perfume that reminds of how the jasmine in our garden smells. Moreover, I've been to Glasgow in the botanic gardens recently and I have very fond memories of their jasmine there. So lovely. So, I came across the reviews for this fragrance, I blind bought and this is what I get - a delicious, honeyed blooming jasmine scent, sweet, intoxicating, opulent... I'm very thankful this exists and I'm grateful to the fellow Fragranticians who reviewed it. :) also, it reminds of a green, jasmine tea. It's quite potent and long lasting, you don't need much in order to have a decent scent trail following you. If you love jasmine, this is the fragrance you may fall in love with, just like I did. :)

I blind bought this and somehow it is 100% exactly as I imagined it would be. It has a vintage vibe to it that I find timeless, not old grandma. It’s a beautiful jasmine that is not soapy and the honey envelops it beautifully. The musk gives all this a sexy tone. I think it’s beautiful. It is right on the edge between classy feminine and femme fatale, perfect balance. To the ones who didn’t have a pleasant experience with this perfume, I recommend dabbing it instead of spraying, it makes all the difference. Edit: This has become my signature fragrance, I can’t stop using it. Unfortunately it’s not as strong as I would want, even if I dab or spray it. I am used to strong long lasting fragrances and given how much I love this one I would die to bathe in it.

OMG this is borderline perverse but oh so gorgeous. Definitely one of Lutens's best. I find Fils de Joie very much in the vein of his original, dramatic creations like Tubereuse Criminelle, i.e. lush, carnal, suffocating, vampy, saturated to the brim and very haute couture. It may be considered "too much", yet I personally can't help but want more. FdJ is my favourite jasmine right now. I have to admit though that wearing it nowadays might feel a bit like trying to rock a feather boa at a barbecue. Well, I've decited to get it anyways for the rare home alone moments and the days I'm out not giving a F. If you appreciate vintage Poison, Opus IX or Lush's Lust, you'll most likely fall under the spell of this fabulous, purrying beast. Bravo Monsieur Lutens!

I recently tried La Dompteuse Engagée, and while I do like it, there was something missing from it, I craved a rich, syrupy depth. Fils de Joie is exactly what I was missing. Humming white florals and thick honey, but not gourmand. Ever so slightly green-bananary/tuberosey from the ylang. Unlike a lot of Serge Lutens scents, it doesn't seem metallic or synthetic (and hey, I love me some of them). This is next level. I've worn this all day today, the warmest spring day this year I Paris, and it's absolutely marvellous. It's strong but manages to fit well in every situation, not dominating the airspace and with no screech or scratch (that said, I did apply carefully). This is now side by side with L'incendiaire as my favourite Serge Lutens.

1. I have a few unopened boxes of this perfume that I found and I am selling them. Contact me if interested. 2. This is the most beautiful, simple, clear perfume I have ever smelled. It reminds me of my childhood summerhouse where we had jasmine growing. My grandfather was a beekeeper and the bees would use the pollen to make some of the honey, it was my favorite out of all those sorts. This perfume is all that in a bottle, but red (for some odd reason). Regardless, I bought all of the stock they had in my country since I figured out they don’t sell them anymore and I will cherish it for ever. 3. If you have very good alternatives, please tell me as I have never been transferred to my childhood in a millisecond in my life due to a scent.

A welcoming night jasmine of the Southeast Asian variant. It opens with an enveloping pungency of blossomed jasmine. The flowery pungency is fresh in a sense that you are smelling a jasmine basking in fresh dew during dawn. Musk and honey just taper the brightness down into a slightly boozy jasmine vinaigrette. Continues to evoke itself as a dark, sensual and invigorating concoction of dried fruit, black tea and a present jasmine accord. A joyous feat from Sheldrake. My skin really loves honey scents and thankfully can pull them off without veering into urine territory. However, I do have some difficulty with white florals despite loving them so... but in this scent, the honey somehow mutes the dirty aspects of jasmine and creates a beautiful, absolutely stunning display of erotic amour. This fragrance is STRONG, powerful and ever blooming - it keeps warming up with each passing hour...jasmine, honey, ripe fruit, a touch of lipstick... powdery, waxy, creamy and syrup like. If it works on you, it REALLY puts in the work. Rather sweet, I imagine it works best in cooler weather as the heat can make it suffocating. J'adore

Um, wow. So, firstly and foremostly, I looove this. I bought a travel size and turned right-round and bought the bottle. This is my first Serge Lutens, but if they are all this good, I'm in trouble. Anyway, how to describe this... Yes, it's jasmine. Yes, it's honey.. But there's an animalic undertone. An incredibly sexy vibe, even. It's natural. It's warm, sunkissed skin. It's innocent but not. It's a hot summer evening after a first kiss and a gentle breeze carries an intoxicating scent in the air. It's a women with curly, flowing hair wearing a sundress that turns subtly sheer when the light hits it just so. It's just absolutely mesmerizing.

A jammy sweet floral. Very pleasant and interesting to smell, but I feel like I would need to be at least 50 y.o. to be able to pull this off. I'm getting mature lady vibes from it, the kind of lady that has a career as a biology proffessor, and enjoys gardening and making jam in her free time. This is the smell of magical lady bugs that feed on strawberry jam . This is a very happy carefree scent, it makes me feel as if I accepted all of life's bullshit and moved on, deciding to enjoy. A few hours in the honey and ylang lose the jasmine and start dominating, and I like it way more this way. Turns out the mature biologist lady likes to dance!

Can't believe how beautiful this is! Full bodied night jasmine potion. It's extremely sexy and mind blowing scent. Sophisticated ylang, and so unusual musk, which is animalic, but not indolic at the slightest. I normally stay away from SL musks, as they are a bit too fecal for my nose. This perfume is a totally different story. It's a materpiece. The quality, projection, longevity, it's all there. I might need to buy a back up actually, as I'd hate to run out of it! Today just for a laugh sprayed one wrist it this one and another with TF Jasmin Rouge. Fils de Joie wins in clarity and quality hands down. TF JR is a baby babble compared to it.

Fils de Joie opens with an uninviting metallic coldness that's also present in the opening of La Fille de Berlin, but this ultimately settles into a radiant and very sweet Jasmine. It really does smell like jasmine tea! Although "jammy" is a word often referred to roses around here, this manages to be "jammy" and dense to me, likely the honey note making it so... the honey is heavy and smooth. In fact, the honey becomes dominating in the dry-down, while the jasmine subsides, so if you're not a fan of honey, I wouldn't recommend this. Fils de Joie is sweet, likeable, a bit candy-like, but with the depth Serge Lutens is known for.

this may be my favorite perfume EVER, i think this is the one i’m wearing to my own wedding. the opening to me smells like sour candy (think about how sour patch kids tastes), then dries down to a to-die-for honeyed jasmine scent. it’s mysterious, gorgeous, and feminine. i got a sample from a decant site and was devastated to find out it is discontinued. why would serge discontinue something so enchanting :< i paid an arm and a leg for a full bottle from ebay and it was worth EVERY penny ! i smell it every day even if i don’t wear it just to feel something lol. this would be an amazing blind buy if you could still easily get it

deeply obsessed with this, i honestly think it’s my favorite from the brand. intoxicating honeyed jasmine, vampy and syrupy and so so sexy. the jasmine actually isn’t as indolic or skanky as i had anticipated, it’s not quite a slutty perfume but more of something a vampire seductress would spritz on her way out the door for a night time stroll. i’ve gotten comments that it smells like jasmine incense on me, which i adore. definitely something more suited for the colder weather but it’s not particularly cloying or suffocating to not wear year round. (ugh and the COLOR!! like dark syrupy blood red wine <3)

Supersweet juvenile jasmine nectar that earns the "narcotic" description so often given to white florals. It’s green, fresh, invigorating and jammy-- more like jasmine tea than any other perfume I’ve tried. The pure jasmine soliflore I've been looking for. Still on the fence about it though, since it’s so cloying, as if the tea has been mixed with spoonfuls of honey. I dabbed this on with Jasmin Antique though, balancing with some greener botanical elements, and the resulting aroma was perfect. I can see this really working well if sprayed lightly, on clothing, or used as a layering component.

I love this scent. But I will say, the jasmine is only strong in the opening very very briefly. The perfume spends many long hours deep in honey, with jasmine only in the background. I didn’t have much experience with honey in perfume, so I gave it a shot as a jasmine lover and glad I did. But since the honey is really the star of the show, I would purchase based on that note specifically. The honey note is also not super sweet and syrupy bright, more so waxy and aged, giving the jasmine a dark, antique scent. I was able to find a bottle on EBay, so look there if you want to blind buy.

Most beautiful! Jasmine and Night Blooming Jasmine are the top notes, followed by Honey, Ylang-Ylang, and Musk for the middle and base notes. The blooms feel particularly sinful because of the musk's smoky character. Later on, the scent is kept quite simple, with a crimson, fruity sweetness that contrasts with an animalic, smoky undertone to form the drydown. Silage appears mild to low, and longevity is average which is something to be worked on. For me, using it with a moisturizer works wonders. The earthiest, stickiest, and sweetest honey jasmine is this. Madly in love with it!

A blind buy for me for a really great price and I'm sooo pleased! I actually thought I'd be selling it after the first sniff, mais les fils have captured my attention and my love. This is just so beautiful, it really does make me want to smile when I smell it. This is lovely jammy jasmine tea with large spoon fulls of honey. I'm envious of the reviews with memories of humid nights and the scent of night-blooming jasmine wafting on the breeze. I crave this and find it to be very alluring. If you love jasmine it's a no brainer, it's truly a joy to wear. Intoxicating. J'ADORE!

I'm surprised that I haven't left a review for Fils de Joie, it's a lovely and intoxicating honeyed jasmine that borders on the indolic (but is not too indolic to enjoy - looking at you, Lush Lust). I love it in the warm weather as it makes the florals and honey bloom, making this a seductive and hypnotic scent. Echoing what someone has written below, it smells saturated. Rich. Lovely! A gothic summer scent, if you will, which allows you to stay true to yourself even in the dead of a hot, hot summer. In the cold, it is grape-flavoured cold medicine. No thanks.

Absolutely gorgeous, intensely sweet, lush, rich and almost syrupy. Heady and indolic jasmine, animalic ylang, and waves of candied pollen wash over you and all around you til you’re swimming in it but can’t make any headway because it’s like swimming in molasses. This is one of those stunning perfumes that can’t be worn anywhere because they’re just too much. Unless you’re a sexy witch entertaining a handsome demon on a sultry night in New Orleans surrounded by blossoming moon flower. Then it’s totally appropriate.

This smells so much like night-blooming “Jasmine.” Keep in mind, this flower is not in the same family as what we usually think of when we think of jasmine. If you do a quick search for cestrum nocturnum, you can get a better understanding of why some aren’t smelling the “jasmine” correctly. This plant is in the Solanaceae family, which tend to have what I can best describe as a slightly poisonous scent. To me, this scent is simple, strong, and beautiful. It gets me many compliments as well! Highly recommend. 9/10
