White Lily

I picked this up on one of the first few days of a recent trip to Japan last month. I like most of Shiro's offering, but not quite enough to commit to full bottles! Savon, their most popular, is nice but I don't love the dry down enough to make it a daily reach. White Tea is also nice and fresh, but I have a similar issue with the dry down! I actually own the body mist variant of Earl Grey, which I do really enjoy, but it can pull a bit sour on me on occasion. White Lily didn't speak to me conceptually (white florals and lily aren't notes/accords I'm typically drawn to—an exception being Do Son, which I love), and it wasn't a love a first sniff either. I tested it on my wrist on a few occasions at Shiro's London shop and it didn't really inspire me. On my trip, I passed by a Shiro boutique in a department store in Tokyo and was determined to buy something—prices are half of what they are in the UK! After 20 minutes of indecision, I snagged a bottle of White Lily in the body mist format and mini bottle in the Eau de Parfum. Shiro's body mists are actually amazing. I love a "functional fragrance" product (in the likes of Clarins' Eau Dynamisante) and Shiro's mists have a few interesting ingredients (including light moisturizing due to yuzu peel water and persimmon extract which is deodorizing—particularly useful as a quick spritz on clothing in the super hot and humid Japanese summer weather!) which make them more than a typical body mist! I find White Lily to be a near-perfect amalgamation of my many fragrance loves. It so smooth and clean. I get a bit of Savon's soapiness, but in fleeting wafts. I get a touch of Do Son's creamy florals (the Jasmine, perhaps) but White Lily is so well blended that it's hard to actually pinpoint the Jasmines itself. Also, despite it's name, I would classify White Lily as way more "green" and less "white floral". It has elements of White Tea and Sage (from Bath and Body Works) which I love but can smell a bit too synthetic. Sometimes I'm reminded of Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, but only in a conceptual way (my issue with Green Tea is that over time I go anosmic to it's nicest nuances and only end up smelling lemon! I have yet to have any such anosmia issues with White Lily). It is also tea-like in it's over all appeal and fresh spa quality, but without the stereotypical tea note found in most tea-forward frags. It's all so nicely well rounded that it could be forgettable and non-distinct, which in a way, it is! (As an easy reach, it's ideal!) And something else that became evident was a unique sea air/ salt water quality. This isn't noted anywhere or included in the note pyramid. I'm not sure where it comes from, but it's definitely there. It makes White Lily so summery and breezy! As I worked through my bottle over the course of my trip, it grew on my more and more. I think it's a perfect fragrance.

Nostalgia is truly important to me. My mind tends to wonder to places of the past, whether good or bad. This scent transports me there safely. A delicately soft floral. Nothing loud about this, it’s perfectly soft. The lily and magnolia are the main players here, with no screechy notes present. While I wish it were a bit stronger, I feel the softness is the reason for it’s beauty for me.

A refined feminine floral fragrance wrapped in the sophisticated scent of white lily and magnolia. It reminds me little bit of Replica Buttble bath, because it smells really clean and comforting. But this one is way more floral and light. It doesn't last too long, but this is the case for most of Japanese perfumes.
