Basilica

I love Solstice Scents for how unapologetic their fragrances are; never cocky or aggressive, just firmly rooted in their own identities. The blends that avoid leaning too sweet or too musky often land in a place I can only describe as reverent. As if they were bottled in the forgotten chapels and borderless cathedrals of countries whose names have faded from memory. Basilica is one of those scents. It opens pleasantly and cleanly. If you strip away the spiritual undertones, you might think of a historical hamam. That impression doesn’t last. Quickly, you're engulfed in frankincense and the memory of too-long communions under godrays filtered through stained glass. The church is empty, yet you feel full. You don’t understand why you’re crying. A woman sits beside you. Her robes are flowing, her face lined with age and gentleness. She smells of myrrh, vanilla, sandalwood, and perhaps the faintest trace of raisin cookies she baked for her grandchildren earlier that day. She doesn’t speak your language, but she offers you her shoulder. You don’t speak hers either, but you spill your grief into her, shaking and trembling, asking for meaning. Neither of you understands. Perhaps if you did, this moment wouldn’t exist. You blow your nose into the linen napkin she presses into your hand. It smells faintly of sandalwood and stonewashed linen. It is not warm to the touch, but it is warm to the soil. Frankincense floods your senses again as you straighten up and look around the sacred space you’ve found yourself in. Nothing has changed. Not really. But you carry the scent of the Basilica with you wherever you go. Performance Notes: Blooms aggressively on warm skin; almost overwhelming in the first hour. Strong sillage early on, then lingers close like a memory that refuses to fade.

Basilica will definitely remind you of church. A divine scent indeed! Deeply resinous with rich woods. Dry, smoky, spicy, and just a little bit sweet. This is very much a skin scent, but I find it so comforting. I can't stop sniffing myself!

I've been an avid SS Fan for about 2 years now, and I still see scents I don't know/recognize. This one caught my eye because galbanum is my #1 green note- however I knew to expect another "church/incense" scent- which SS does very well, however I own quite a few. I don't get any green, but I agree this one morphs in so many ways that it's NOT just another church oil. There is some kind of morphing sweetness/softness that makes me think of Conjure. I like it more than Travelers and Séance- which have too much clove for me. Basilica has a smoothness that I like, but agreed that it is a very soft scent. This reminds me of Master Bedroom if memory serves. Intimate and private sillage.

This is one of my all time favorite Solstice Scents fragrances. It's a wonderful dry church-style resin incense, not bitter, but verging on it and no sweetness to it at all. Just flat out lovely. It's very inexpensive and while the oils don't project loudly, they last a long time on the skin. If you want an incense that smells like midnight Mass, this is your baby right here.

I've been testing out SS frankincense scents and this is the one I like the best. Of all of them that smell church-like, this is the most Catholic Church like. I got the oil and my wife says its not overpowering like the rest of them seem to have been. Monastic, Astral Temple, Skrying smoke all smell nice but I like this best. Dry, woody, churchlike smoke.
