L'Eau de Sonia Rykiel

It's been my ever favorite since the minute I had my nose on it. I wore it all through my teenage years, can't recall how many bottles I emptied, it was all I asked for at christmas and my birthday. Got me quite a lot of compliments also, as most of girls my age were wearing Angel (yeah, well... 90's !) which is quite the opposite to this one. I loved how it smelled fresh but not like a cologne, it made me feel luminous and free (I might have been delusionnal but that's not the topic !). And then BAM ! Suddenly it was nowhere to be found ever again. In France all perfume shops stopped selling it, leaving me desperate and like a junkie without her fix. Then I moved on (after experiencing terrible withdrawal), and tried other perfumes, without really finding a match. A few years ago, I had the idea to look it up on internet, thinking maybe it could be found in other countries. I was able to purchase a bottle and a body cream. Unfortunately, I think it was ten-years-old stock, because the body cream was all liquid an yellow. And the perfume was also less blue than i remembered, and more greenish. I can smell the memory of the perfume I once knew, but there's also a strong encaustic-like odor. Has the bottle turned sour, or have my taste changed, I can't say. It's a bit like seeing your teenage love after 15 years. You've both changed, and finally don't really know why you were so crazy about each other. But it still brings back good memories.

L'EAU DE SONIA RYKIEL is one of the strangest compositions I've ever encountered. I see the negative reviews involve a lot of complaints about dashed expectations. I think that the way to approach this fragrance is to leap out of the box and ask: What is it, exactly, that I smell? The answer to my nose is clear: celery. Yes, the mystery "green leaves" were stripped from a stalk of celery! So, with that in mind, is the fragrance pleasant? I do wholeheartedly concur that this is not predominantly a citrus frag, so those who are looking specifically for heavy bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, orange, etc., may be disappointed. But going against the grain, I am finding this bizarre celery aromatic quite refreshing! I also agree with other reviewers that this opens as an entirely unisex scent. Nothing flowery or sweet at all, and the aromatic quality of the celery seed (also included!) moves this closer to the men's category, I think. However, the drydown, against all expectations, ends up being quite creamy, with surprisingly voluminous sillage. I'll be wearing this come summer and am hoping that the celery leaves won't wilt! For now, L'EAU DE SONIA RYKIEL will take its place next to my other two SR t-shirt bottles. I find the contents of all three to be casual, wearable fragrances, truly in the spirit of soft, colorful, pima cotton t-shirts! The boxes, too, are so attractive that I can't bring myself to toss them. Seriously.

I find L'eau to be a cheerful almost unisex approach to a fresh floral scent. The downside to this scent is that one of its ingredients has degraded badly leaving a stale dried spice. I've tried a couple of full bottles of this and both had some degree of degradation. The one I have now is boderline though the mini I have is fine. There's a subtle citrus in this which blends well with the green notes. I agree that it smells a little like celery leaves. The floral notes are quite impressive, a lot of lily of the valley and jasmine. The most unusual thing about this is the cypress that starts in the heart and lasts until the end. It lends an aromatic edge to the flowers making them less squeaky clean and more refreshing. Not an amazing perfume but certainly a more sophisticated option for youngsters than a common fruity floral.

What a great refreshing citrusy fragrance! I has this cypress note which I really love in Montana Blu and which makes the composition really stand out among others withing the family. Perfect for sports and hot summer days!
