Dewaniya

Dewaniya is absolutely a marvel - truly a marvel in every sense of the word. It is a bag of tricks you simply cannot predict, and one which will dazzle you like many other creations of his with a slew of notes, each a wonder unto itself, and yet in a maximalist dance perfectly in sync with the grand amount of other notes simultaneously wishing to present to you their beauty - and yet it never feels like too much, nor does it feel overwhelming (except in the sense of beauty which simply brings tears to your eyes and a shiver to your spine.) To me, Dewaniya opens on my skin with first and foremost with a mixture of Cambodian oud and Indian oud (with perhaps the bengali oud making an appearance, although to be quite honest I have yet to have an isolated appraisal of Bengali oud, and as such its scent profile escapes me.) In addition, as if a swirling series of magnificent colors behind this heavenly vision of oud, one can make out: tobacco, saffron, honey, tea, rose, labdanum, osmanthus, jasmine, as well as some semi-green (citrusy?) elements dancing from what appears to be marigold, a dry and almost dusty feeling coming from what I believe to be hay, as well as loads of resins, animalic notes, and spices that seem to be literally neverending in the glory they insist on bringing to ones palate. There are distinct fruity aromas that evolve through the spices, animalic qualities, resins, and woods - there seem to be a peach-like effect in tune with some orange-blossom like tea which somehow seems distinct from the black tea quality which is still very much at play here, as well as green citrus notes which seem to be coming from some mixture of osmanthus and marigold which seem to have a bitter green quality beneath them that almost falls right into the jammy, sticky roses (which I believe is the absinthe, although I might be mistaken) which itself has a quality beside it of a fruity hay paired with honey and tea - and behind that even still there is a strong leather note which is very smoky and animalic, and yet it brings you to notice the oud right before your very eyes yet again. The Indian oud here seems to habitually call upon the dark woods, the earthy and resinous hyrax, the animalic and musky civet, the chewy tobacco, the dark roasted coffee, the smoky frankincense, and to a lesser extent, notes like semi-sweet semi-bitter saffron, and the hay whose dusty qualities spill over into the sweet vanillic benzoin, the ripe tonka beans, which lay spread out atop bright and beautiful cedarwood dripping in honey, with osmanthus and marigold calling upon the absolutely lush (in every sense of the word) roses, all of which pulls in the sweet and almost gourmand Cambodian oud which has flashes of a caramelized edge to it while still maintaining a dominant woody profile which again allows it to bleed back into the other elements dancing about this fragrance. Overall, I would describe this composition as celestial - it's a representation of the organic movement of all that is, and the interconnected nature of elements differentiating themselves within a set totality - it's about Yin and Yang - it's about the majesty of scent itself - it's no-mind meditation and yet a meditation that seeks to actualize through all that is. It's an oud-centric attar that seeks to show just why this material is very precious - it's not a price point, it's an essentially intrinsic to the very object itself. This is very easily one of my very favorite fragrances from the line, and one of the fragrances through which one should truly pay attention throughout it's entire duration, because it's not just worth it, but it would be a tragedy to miss out on any element presented here. Dewaniya is so gloriously rich that you can smell it before you have pulled the stopper. On application, we meet a dark, handsome prince of an attar, supremely confident and bold... defiant amongst ancient carved walls and intricately patterned carpets. It evokes dark amber, black and red colours. Layer open layer of rich smells: tobacco, honey, smoke, saffron, black tea, oud, rose and labdanum... twinkling with ambergris and uplifted by frankincense and myrrh. Dark, sexy, complex and confident... Those who love Ame Sombre, Tabac Grande or Ambrecuir, amongst others, will no doubt love this masterful blend.

People are probably going to despise me for saying this but *sigh* here goes... My friend told me "...This smells like 'barbecue sauce'... But I like it... A lot"... AND I COULDN'T AGREE MORE! But now I understand WHY I LOVE THIS. Oh my lord. On my skin barbecue, sweet soy sauce or Katsu sauce that gets sweeter and more floral and honeyed in the drydown! Undeniably sexy, dark, molasses-y, honey sweetness. This one gives me jovial gourmand memories and is mind-blowing with what these ingredients have done. I hope I have not offended anyone. 9/10

This is my first Attar and I simply love it! It is marvelous! So beautiful deep and luxurious scent. I get rose, saffron, spices, then oud and tobacco, amber. This reminds me of my trips to India over ten years ago in a most beautiful way. I feel so sentimental and nostalgic when wearing this one. I believe that it works really well in warm weather and summer. Warmth brings out nuances beautifully. If you manage to try this, don’t miss your chance. It’s overall masterful attar.

This one might be full bottle worthy I’m still deciding. Starts off beautifully sweet amber and really nice quality oud and you also have some rose coming through. On dry down the oud and rose go and all you get is smokey amber and its still nice but i do wish the oud and rose stayed on this one. Performance was 10hours so that was good but sadly no sillage after the first hour ☹️

Now we're talking...! Dark, menacing and raw! I get a heap of resinous materials, birch or incense, animalic elements and oud! This is really REALLY well done. Enjoying this quite a bit. It's not currently available on the site, but OH MY this is really well done!

This is a full, well done blend. Very multifaceted. Like a carnival. Multi-oud, roses, coffee, saffron, amber tobacco .. All linked by the inevitable honey. Overall I like it but the marigold note is quite strong and lingers all the way through. Overwhelm my arm and my nostrils. It is not one of my favorite flowers. Best suited to the day. Masculine tending.

Ah thank God. I've been going through the Sultan Pasha Attars, and after discovering a few mind-blowing ones, the next few seemed demure, while I was looking for wild swings and big statements. This one brings me back. It's totally wearable, but is quite strong, unique and funky. It's not my favorite mix of scents or personality (e.g., absinthe is strident to my nose, and marigold is weird), but the additive mix of everything here is powerful, interesting, and a calling card. There's a high-end tiki bar a few miles from me, and although this is a "high end" scent not a "low end" one, it does have all the sweetness, joy, vitality and color I associate with a wild, sophisticated Caribbean environment. Most of the actual notes in this fragrance don't fit the text below, but in how this powerful swirl lands, its vibe, it reminds me of these Charles Baudelaire lines, as they appear translated in the opera Doctor Atomic: "Long let me inhale deeply the odour of your hair Into it plunge the whole of my face Like a thirsty man into the water Into the water of a spring And wave it in my fingers like a scented handkerchief To shake memories into the air If you could know all that I see All that I feel All that I hear in your hair In your hair My soul floats, floats upon perfumes As the souls of other men float, float upon music Your hair contains an entire dream Full of sails and masts It contains vast seas whose soft monsoons Bear me to delightful climates Where space is deeper and bluer Where the atmosphere is perfumed with fruit With foliage and with human skin In the ocean of your hair I see brief visions Of a port resounding with melancholy songs Of vigorous men of all nations and ships of all shapes Outlining their fine and complicated architectures Against an immense sky where eternal heat languidly quivers In the glowing firegrate of your hair I inhale the odour of tobacco Mingled with opium and sugar In the night of your hair I see the infinity Of tropical azure resplendent On the downed banks of your hair I inebriate myself with the mingled odours Of palm, of musk and coconut oil Long let me bite your heavy, black tresses... it seems to me that I am eating memories."

Dewaniya opens as a floriental with a bouquet dominated by the intensity of rose and an exotic herbal and fresh touch of marigold and a slight bitterness of anise/absinthe. But this moment of freshness is short-lived and the fragrance takes a warm, dense, dark, smoky, resinous turn; which I appreciate very much! Soon a masterful and striking blend of 'oud arrives and that will always permeate the fragrance with a profile: woody, earthy, resinous, medicinal, smoky ... I didn't identify anything corral or animalistic here, just a characteristic dirt of this sumptuous wood that right at the beginning promotes a dark depth to the fragrance. At the center of this spectacular creation, the rose resumes a certain level of prominence, blending with the 'oud, very present, to establish the most famous perfect marriage in perfumery. At this stage, an aspect of a dark aromatic vapor reminiscent of a bedouin tent where arabic coffee with cardamom and saffron and traditional Ceylon black tea seasoned with cinnamon and sugar cubes with a steaming incense stick are being prepared offshore. The complexity of this construction and the quality of the ingredients are impressive. One of the best if not the best Sultan Pasha perfume I've ever tried. Arriving at the base we have the animalic part of the fragrance that in my opinion is really due to the animals: Castoreum, Civet and Hyraceum and a musky nuance. They walk around this flowery field and at the foot of these centennial Aquilarias trees; These little animals are more playful than defiant evildoers, who give an animalic nuance without difficulties or foul smells, at least for me, on my skin to my sense of smell. All of this is embraced by an ambergris of unmatched quality that I could not fail to mention. Spectacular perfume! Woody Amber Resinous Spicy Aromatic Animalic.

Dewaniya by Sultan Pasha My first SPA purchase was Cafe Ambre Noir back in 2016, and thanks to generous sultan for dropping a 1 ml of unnamed prototype attar that was working on at that time to find later on it is the mighty Dewaniya, my curiosity killed my patience so couldn't wait till i get back home to try it, and glad i did, it is a wowzer from opening to dry down, i couldn't stop sniffing my arm!!! the opening is breathtakingly beautiful oud but not skanky/funky oud, a clean type of oud that will mesmerize your senses along with Saffron, rose, tobacco and sweet myrrh. one of the most beautiful opening i ever smelt in my whole life, so beautiful that i get a nosegasm every time i wear even after 3 years of owning it. the blending is out of this world, you can hardly pick the ingredients and it took me ages to track down what i am actually smelling, it does smell like a wall of ingredients that built up a new rich note which devolve and develop from a phase to another, it is very complex yet very beautiful that i had to order a full tola (12 ml) of this elixir as soon as he released it on his Ebay store (his website wasn't launched yet by that time) the longevity is off the charts +12 hours and it lasts and lasts even you can still trace it on your skin after your shower, projection and sillage is excellent very powerful at first 2 hours and leaves a good scent trail for another 4 hours. 10/10 another masterpiece by the maestro sultan pasha.

This scent starts as an olfactory still-life of extreme antiquity, among certain existentially contemplative objects, all of them wooden, all covered in a delicate layer of century-old dust, which we might as well call the "library". The dust factor really adds drama and photo-realism to this portrait of aged wooden shelves, from which no human has read in ages. I would say the start gives the impression of stillness, silence, a solitary note. Into the dry down, Dewaniya grows slightly sweeter, spicier, like a pumpkin pie, though still architectural, gothic, wooden, still. According to the internet, the Dewaniya is a kind of reception room in middle eastern architecture, and I perceive this place through the scent, but its occupants have departed long ago. Only a single strand of light weaves through thick wooden beams, resting finally on a vanitas of memento mori below.

This opens up with a fresh Oud in all it's glory and that stays from start to finish. To me it smells like black tea that is wrapped up in a medicinal smell which is the hallmark of the Oud. As it opens up on your skin you can smell hints of incense, coffee and a amber sweetness. The freshness stops the scent from been too dark and it is exotic and wearable. Different from what you may find on the shelves at your local store but the quality is undeniable.

Sultan Pasha does his best Phil Spector, here. Stacking up a wall of notes around the star Osmanthus, the way Spector stacked his mixes up and around the lead singers of his famous girl groups. While this one isn’t the leader of the pack, it’s an unqualified success, showing us that flat out power doesn’t always betray a lack of depth.
