It is funny that in my mind it was also "black beach" because it made me think of the black sands of the west coast of New Zealand. This is as described. It opens as a rough and salty ocean, worth it simply to experience this in a bottle. Then some alchemy occurs and it dries down to black tea and roses, painting the image of a blustery coastal walk followed by a cozy sit down in a batch on the cliff, smelling the roses while you sip your tea and gaze over the rugged coastline where you previously walked.

Back Beach is a real gem. To my nose, this is the most unique scent in The Virtue's collection. I can't really think of anything remotely like it that I have tried. The combo of birch tar, bergamot and black tea notes lead here. It's fab.

This is called "Back Beach", not "Black Beach”. I have a sample set from The Virtue with five fragrances in. This was the only one of the five I didn't like. It has a note that is repulsive to my nose on my skin, for some reason, and I just cannot work out what it is. It may be the birch tar, or the birch tar in combination with the ebony wood. The sales assistant said it was one of the brand's bestsellers, so I'm sure it's a peculiarity of mine, and other people will love it. But I'm glad to see The Virtue on Fragrantica, finally, and will probably review the other fragrances, two of which are loves and two are likes.
