Chateau, 1970

The most beautiful wood vintage hotel vanity with a vase of dried up roses sitting upon it and a bath robe hanging on the seat. This is Sharon Tate at the Chateau, its Eve Babitz at the Beverly Hills Hotel and her glamorous empty atomizers she kept sitting on her vanity, it's a woman in her 70's (glamorous as ever) carefully wrapping her perfectly rolled hair in a silk scarf for the night, cigarette smoke blowing out the window, rose dusting powder puff to her left, glass of wine to her right, and perfectly staged vintage bedsheets and frilly pillows behind her. I liked this when I first smelled it and definitely got the roses and vintage armoire wood and linens and then didn't think much of it. But in going through my travel sprayer i've fallen in love with it more and more with each wear. It's comforting in a way that makes me feel confident and glamorous and feminine in the specific way I love to be. It makes me feel like a 1960's femme getting ready to meet my butch lover at a hotel bar mid day, knowing i'm gonna be greeted with a small bundle of pink roses and the smell of a sun-warmed linen shirt when they arrive. 10/10

This is by far my favorite out of the Los Angeles Collection (I’m a Girl of the Year bitch when it comes to the New York one, FWIW). So, upon getting a full-bottle, I’ve been wearing this every day without fail. Truly a fragrance that goes through distinct stages, TWM is great at that, it starts with a pretty powdery rose. But hang on, because it quickly develops into a spicy, sexy rose—the nutmeg note warms up on the skin, I think—that somehow melds perfectly with musky clean linens and vintage wood. It’s a magnificent, hot girl rose scent that does not lean into old lady territory, nor into jammy fruity Delina/VGG/etc. territory either. I live in West Hollywood and I love imagining Sharon Tate spritzing this on, putting on light makeup and a cotton mini-dress, and trekking from Chateau Marmont to the Sunset Strip. When I’m in a freshie mood and after showers, I’ve been layering it with Maison Louis Marie Antidris Cassis perfume oil which gives everything a greener vibe.

Imagine if you will, that you have awoke from a deep slumber, the warm summer air wafting the smell of the outdoor lemon trees in through the back door. You rub your eyes awake and hear that your lover is in the shower. You lay back down and just sink into the still warm linens on his side, his spicy scent lingering on the sheets. You breathe in deeply and sign contentedly. The steam from the shower awakens the old wooden furniture in your room. You decide to get up and open the back door to your private chateau - after that, you go to surprise your lover in the shower. That is what I think of when it comes to this perfume. It's zesty and spicy, which evokes that older 70s cologne aesthetic, then softened with vintage woods and crisp laundry. Slip on your best bell bottoms and cowl-neck shirt - this will have you living your best 1970s life.

Wow, this perfume is absolutely unique and wonderful. I don't really like rose perfumes generally, but here, the rose seems enveloped, a soft background giving way to hints of nutmeg and fresh citrus. This isn't a perfume I would usually buy because of the notes, but I was drawn in by its name and description. Nevertheless, rose usually ends up being the most prominent note in perfumes that include it, and this one doesn't really avoid that, so if you truly hate rose I would tread carefully, but it is more gentle here. The name and reference of this fragrance fits really well, and it does invoke the atmosphere of lounging around in a freshly cleaned hotel room, being rich but not quite, wanting to go to the pool or beach but opting for a drink instead...

I have always thought there is a difference between something smelling “old” and something smelling “vintage”, and this perfume is a magical example. When I was 12 years old I loved to raid my grandmother’s wardrobe and dress up in the sequin gowns that she wore to go ballroom dancing. This captures, for me, exactly this scent. Aged sequins, the rustle of tissue paper, waxed wooden dance floors, a slight undertone of sweat. This perfume will turn you into a fabulous dame with pin curls and a cat eye who knows how to foxtrot. This is looking at a grainy photo of a New Year’s party, This is Bridgette Bardot reminiscing. I have no idea how that exact smell got into this tiny bottle but my god- what a beautiful, evocative experience. Bravo.

Truly a 10/10 This perfume makes me feel extravagant, and recalls an olfactive memory of contented happiness. It’s the feeling of taking a mid-day nap in the sunshine without a care in the world: Warm breezes through open windows during springtime with the honey sweetened juice of fresh citrus on the air, and a daze of roses swirling. The note of vintage armoire is so specific a note, that it takes me to the hazy and warm wooden library that belongs in my dream home. This perfume is so excellently done that almost ruins other perfumes for me. I can smell something and think its nice, but if it doesn't make me _feel_ something, then what's the point of buying? I love everything in this collection.

My partner gave me an old chest of drawers to use, and it’s where I store my clothes and perfumes. It belonged to his great-uncle, is lined with floral wallpaper, and must date back to the first 50 years of the last century — when furniture was made of real wood. Incredibly, this perfume makes me think of that chest. Can you imagine the days it’s seen! Chateau does smell like opening old drawers, but in the most pleasant way. It’s woody and musky, but just enough to support the rose, which is dry and papery and constant. A hint of spice livens things up. I like wearing this to museum openings. Very vintage. Very unisex.

It’s not for everyone, but it is for me! I tend to hate rose scents. Byredos Rose of No Man’s land makes me gag BUT this particular fragrance is so different from other rosy fragrances. The rose scent is not cloying and is somewhat neutralized by the nutmeg and musk giving a vintage incense quality. I love spicy scents so this did not disappoint. This sillage is also far lesser on Chateau 1970 than the other scents in the TWM line which may be why I tolerate this rose but not others. This is sexy, timeless, and not too sweet! I love!!!

It's so funny to me how people are so quick to discount something as "the worst perfume they've ever smelled," because scent is entirely subjective. As someone who loves a spicy rose such as Rose 31 from Le Labo... I adore this. This is a scent that is so nostalgic to me - reminds me of my grandmother (the OG fragrance girlie in my life, a lover of Chanel No. 5 and Obsession by Calvin Klein) who smells primarily of roses, woods and spices. TWM posseses some of the few scents I just KNOW I will be rebuying again and again.

Oh, Chateau, how I love you so. As a former resident of Los Angeles and repeat visitor of Chateau Marmont, this scent is aptly named. I would describe it as a year round, "cool girl", sexy fragrance. It's different without trying too hard, and remains distinctly itself. It leans into grandma-chic. On me, it's heavy on the nutmeg, but fades into mostly linens and expensive rose potpourri. If you've seen the movie The Love Witch, the lead could definitely be wearing this. Glam, sexy, cool, understated.

I’ve only recently appreciated this scent, I’ve had the sample for years now and initially thought it was too grandma-esque. But I’ve really grown to like it! It smells like dried roses left on the dresser, linen and salty skin. vintage hollywood glamour, but in their 'chateaus' not the red carpet. Definitely powdery, and there’s this lovely sharp edge that stops if from becoming a headache, at least for me . Very beautiful and long lasting. If you don’t like powdery florals this isn’t for you

I'm afraid I don't have a ton to say on this one except for that the notes laid out are spot on: It's rose, it's musk, it's wood, it's linens. I especially like the linens note in this, brings a nice crispness to the rose without being heavy. Somehow both vintage and classic/timeless feeling. If you know you like rose it's worth a try! I don't quite resonate with it and my personal style quite enough to justify a whole bottle but will gladly use and savor the rest of my sample!

i love rose fragrances, this is rose and clean sheets with a bit of woodiness. very well blended and pleasant, just not weird/interesting enough for my style. but if you just want to smell GOOD and CLEAN and COZY this is a great option. Edit: I’ve been wearing this almost daily this summer and have grown to love it a lot more. It has the same brightness that Laurel Canyon does that truly lifts your mood. The rose in this smells like a bag of dried pink rose petals.

Love this scent. It's my favorite from this collection due to the musky linen notes that linger hours long after application. Honestly it was hard to pick a favorite from this collection but I'm so glad I picked this one as the full size, because the more I wear it the more I love it. I don't get much rose from it, the musky linen and woodiness are the notes that stick out the most for me-and that's why I love it!

truly brilliant; the best rose fragrance i've ever smelled. the wood note in this is a phenomenon like no other. it's dark and heady, like opening the drawer of a vintage dresser. smells like someone mid-party dousing themselves in rose perfume in front of the armoire to cover a hidden booziness. wasn't my favorite of the collection upon initial testing, but it was the first one i absolutely drained. masterful.

I can see how at first pass people would think this is more matronly but as it develops it is amazing. There is a clear opening, middle, and dry down for this one with different expressions along the way. It does open with an older rose and citrus (on me) but by the end it is a musky silky rose that smells like a black tie gala. WTM nailed it with this one.

There's just something so utterly cool about this scent. I feel like if you think is smells like a "grandma" scent (in a bad way), you have to retest it after exploring new scents. I love Chloe Nomade and would put them in the same category. This would probably smell unbelievably yummy on a man, I truly think its perfectly unisex!

I thought the rose would be heavy, but it really leans into those woody notes and that linen is so pleasant on my skin. Adore it. Entire line makes me want to move to California and stop talking to every person ive ever met.

Dead butterflies on an old wooden staircase wrapped with fresh roses. The scent of a nature preserve's conservatory but more wearable. Love.

It actually smells just like the Chateau cottages. Crazy!
