Maya

If I were to give a review a year ago, I would have written similar to others who have stating that Tocca Maya is nice enough but rather generic. I have tried it twice since it was first launched. But about a month ago, I received a sample and I decided to wear it all day and spray it all over. I was so surprised that, as the day went on, I found myself smelling my wrist - getting a whiff of it and liking it very much. By the end of the day, I order a larger bottle and a travel size. It is in fact similar to others - a less potent version (and perhaps somewhat less complex but I'm not so sure about that) than La Vie est Belle but, when I wear est Belle, it becomes stringent and too much, which Maya never does. In fact, it softens down over time and takes on another quality. It has a slight sweetness to it. I DO think it shows off as a chypre - especially the light touch of oakmoss - a giveaway for a traditional chypre. If I may, I would recommend purchasing a smaller travel size or 2 samples and wearing it all to see if you agree. It's not Chanel or high end - but I have grown to like it very much - I have become weary of the strong patchouli/vanilla/sweet perfumes that can be too much. This same things happened to me with another Tocca - although an entirely different scent - Tocca Cleopatra is very similar to Rodriguez For Her Fleur - which I like very much. But Rodriguez can really "stay" with you all day while Cleopatra is softer - I compared them wrist to wrist and ended up liking Tocca better - sometimes we might think that a softer perfume "goes away," because we can't smell it as much but often people can still smell it - it has developed a "cloud" of sorts and envelopes you and is not "in your face" as much. - Just some thoughts - :)

So...I got the Tocca discovery set today and LISTEN...I gotta tell you. Maya? Maya is that gworl. Hands down. Easily. While this isn't my absolute fav of the bunch, I was shocked by the fact that I, a huge patchouli hater (patchouli and I? Mortal enemies. Never been a bigger rivalry.) fell in love with this perfume. But let me tell you about Maya... Maya is the girl you see out walking around with thick rimmed black glasses, fishnet stockings and blood red lipstick. Maya is the girl cradling a whiskey sour in one hand and her phone in the other while wearing a little black dress at the hole in the wall speakeasy downtown. You never really forget her laugh, her wit, or the way she smelled. Black currant is strong in the opening, but it makes way to a beautiful floral -- also, this perfume reminds me of something I used to wear in high school, but I can't exactly put my finger on what it is. But I have scent memories attached to a particular note(s?) in this fragrance, just can't figure out what. Patchouli earths the composition, but not in a dirty overpowering way. Also, this scent is a man killer ... I literally caught two (yes, two) of my bosses getting close to my neck to smell me. In my opinion, not a safe blind buy... Maya is the kind of fragrance, you have to wear her... or she will wear you. I don't feel like this would be fit for everybody. Definitely full bottle worthy and highly considering it.

This is my second time wearing TOCCA Maya - the first time was in the summer and although I didn't hate it, it certainly wasn't a love. I had the thought that I might like this fragrance in cold weather, so I put my sample away for fall/winter. Cut to today, about 5 months later, and I am in love with this fragrance! Most of the TOCCA fragrances I have tried are super floral and/or shampooey, but Maya is neither. I do get the iris note, and it does come across as lipsticky, and a bit of the rose and jasmine, but it's mostly the patchouli and oakmoss mixed with black currant that I smell on my skin. And I love it! The patchouli is unlike any other patchouli I have tried, in that I enjoy it. I don't know what the difference is tbh. Maybe someone else can enlighten me? Either way, I really enjoy this fragrance. It's the perfect cold weather lipsticky patchouli with the slightest hint of fruitiness. I remember this fragrance lasting quite awhile when I tried it in summer, so I am curious to see how the longevity is in cold weather. I just remembered seeing a 20 ml of Maya at TJ Maxx for $12 shortly after trying the sample for the first time...and I passed it up! Darn it!!!!

stunning sweet feminine floral scent. smells like the color purple to me. sweet, earthy, natural. i am very pleasantly surprised by this as i normally find florals cloying but this is very subtle and clean smelling. i can detect the sandalwood base note and i think that is what makes it so intoxicating and brings it up a notch. it is yummy but inedible. i wish i got more of a jammy vibe that others are reporting, but to me its mostly subtlety floral and natural. very fresh and reminds me of frolicking through a garden on a warm spring day. edit: after a few hours of wear, this becomes an uncannily similar to bath and body works "french lavender and honey" that has been discontinued for a a while now. i knew this smelled familiar and that is what this smells like to me.

This makes the second Tocca fragrance I've owned besides Brigitte as most are too floral and grandma smelling. I tried Maya in Sephora not drawn by the purple color but bcuz it was new. I spritzed it in the bend of my arm and forgot about it as I shopped around. I noticed it smelled like Flower Bomb at intro but as it dried down it developed into something sweet, flower, woody,very luxurious and sexy. I received a compliment on how good I smelled from a very handsome and I said this is a winner! I had to have it! Chypre scents are so mysterious and intriguing to the senses. It reminds me of how it smells when I enter Saks 5th Ave!

I received a sample of this from Sephora today and to my nose it smells just like Kenzo World. Maybe a tad bit stronger. I love Kenzo World so this is a win. I have so many perfumes right now that I cannot justify purchasing this one too. I have Kenzo World, Kenzo World Intense (which is amazing) and backups of both of them. This I may visit after I finish all of the Kenzos. It will take years though. I would be willing to swap if someone bought it and doesn't love it. Just let me know what you need and I will check the stash. lol.

Mmm this is such a sultry deep fragrance. I sprayed it on in the Sephora one evening before going to a concert at a local rock bar and let me tell you it was perfect for the late night ambiance. But it can be worn on a cozy night at home as well. It reminds me so much of my old favorite "Iris" by Crabtree & Evelyn-so glad to have found a dupe! I had the C&E shower gel and used it for the most relaxing bubble baths so in addition to being oh-so-sexy it's very soothing. I hope Tocca makes a Bagno Profumato form of Maya, per favore!

I find Tocca fragrances nice generally but I LOVE Maya. I can def understand the polarization in the reviews because it has a strong patchouli base but I find this to be such a unique interesting scent. Nothing I’ve smelled is like it. The way I’d describe Maya is the witchy mischievous dark haired sister of the Tocca clan who’s up out doing something wild at 3am, while her softer, sunnier sisters have been in bed since 10.

I tried my sample today and just love it! I was not expecting to love it based on the reviews below. I typically and not a fan of iris or powder fragrances. This is different. I don't sense the powder and the iris is not so strong. It is a basic sweet fruity scent with decent longevity. I am looking to see how cheaply I can get a full bottle on ebay right now. It is going to be great for the spring and summer

This is such a beautiful fragrance to me. Honeyed blackberry jam, bare feet on warm soil, loose braids — honey sticks at the health food shop. This is an understated and delightful fragrance that would be at home in any feminine or cottagecore type collection. I wish I understood the negative reviews here a little more, because I think this fragrance is just soft and lovely!

I am surprised that there are so many negative reviews , this is one of my fave perfumes. It’s hard to explain the way that it smells though, it is different than my others, I’m 33 and I love it . And it’s winter time and it’s working well . Smells so good and it lasts a nice long time. Very floral and yes patchouli. Great scent , very fresh smelling

Men love this, it's a compliment-getter. Edit: I really, really love this, too. Updated my rating to a love, but the sillage and longevity DO leave something to be desired, so be warned. Seems to do better on hair and the back of the neck.

I really like this. It's what I imagined Del Pozo Halloween would smell like (but that one is a freesia bomb.) Easily my favorite so far from Tocca. Reminds me of Rance Josephine a little bit.

It has a pretty woody smell but also smells sparkly, the Chypre parts of it make this smell really fancy. I think it’s really suitable for formal events but not really casual wear.

Iris and blackcurrant play so nicely together. This is a bit mature and has prominent patchouli but somehow it still works for me! Need to test it on my skin next time.

Upfront is a juicy blackberry smell, with very warm notes underneath. Appeals to me as it is makes me feel very feminine without being cloying or powdery.

Gorgeous fruitchouli made earthier with oakmoss. If you like this, try Piege de Lulu Castagnette.

The perfect chypre for someone who wants to try one for the first time, or for someone who likes the base notes in chypres but are put off by how beast mode some can get. This is a very soft, understated and approachable chypre. As someone who has a very sensitive nose, I find the projection weak, and that is saying a lot. I had to over spray just to be able to smell it and 2 hrs later i have to put my nose up to my arm to get a scent. Having said that, it really is a lovely soft scent, typical of the Tocca aesthetic. Romping through fields in Italy, wearing a boho dress and straw hat kind of feeling. Or probably what an Anthropologie store should smell like. Tocca does a great job at creating a sense of romanticism. The patchouli, sandalwood and oakmoss blend togetehr for a light creamy woodiness without any damp forrest floor that oakmoss is usually known for. I can detect the jasmine and iris, with the blackcurrent adding a touch of jammy sweetness. It's not a sweet perfume, the fruit lends an airiness to it usually missing from old school chypres. It's nice, inoffensive and something of an easy reach if you're in a rush and don't want to mull over a fragrance. If you like collecting Tocca scents as I do, you won't be mad at having this in your line up. It has enough of the Tocca identity to blend in with its sisters but different enough from the other scents to stand out.

Maya is another generic if nicely-composed feminine scent from Tocca, unchallenging and pretty. Sweet yet fresh, it is reads to me as a fruitchouli - floral-fruity facets with a subtle chypre base. It is surprisingly subtle after the bright, fruity opening subsides. As an iris lover, I was particularly keen to try this, but despite the iris note listed, it is far from the iris scent of my dreams. Maya has a sweet, fruity opening, led by cordial-like blackcurrant, sweet yet refreshing. The Parma violet note follows closely, more sweet than floral, amping up the fruitiness of the opening, and adding a powdery edge. This paves the way seamlessly to the lipstick-like iris-rose accord that forms the heart. Powdery and sweet, it is airy and nicely-rendered. The patchouli dominates the drydown, adding an earthy cloud that brings the modern chypre accord to life. It is a logical progression, complementing the rose and fruity notes nicely. Soft woody notes creep in as it fades, becoming an earthy, powdery skin scent after a little while. Sillage is intimate and longevity is moderate. A youthful and lighthearted floral-fruity-patchouli scent featuring a lipstick accord at its heart, Maya is a pleasant, transeasonal feminine scent that is easy-to-wear but not particularly memorable. Pretty but subtle. 3/5.
