Moss Breches

I had a vague recollection of the fragrance from sniffing it at TF counters and at the time, I liked many of those Private blends but didn't buy them all, unfortunately Moss breches was one of those. In hindsight or if I had a time machine, I'd have rinsed the shelves of every bottle and kept them in mint condition the last decade because I saw a 50ml of this (OK not sold, but on eBay currently) for over £2k!!! Silly Silly money. So I managed to get a sample from a very kind pal, so I could revisit it and see whether any degree of hype or price inflation is worth it, and I'm pleased to tell you that Moss Breches is a FANTASTIC fragrance! I mean I really love the stuff, it's a superior, complex, woody aromatic scent, with a signature Tom Fordness about it, velvety rich, truffle like earth of patchouli with a opening of cinnamon tinged cypress and leathery man musk. I'd say it combines amazing qualities of Halston Z14 (or Italian Cypress by TF if you must) Zino Davidoff (probably looming the largest) The original Tom Ford for Men and the Tom Ford For Men Extreme, (retrospectively) Noir for Men and hints of 80's powerhouse masculinity. I wouldn't quite so as far as calling it 'butch' because it has a certain modernity, metrosexuality and even femininity in terms of it's overall vibe.... but yeah it's superb. Like I said... I wish I bought it back in the day for £130 or whatever? and as a vintage unicorn if that was swelled to £400-500 now I'd have no problem saying if you really wanted to treat yourself to this, then COOL! I might even be tempted myself if I was feeling flush but that one I saw on eBay is outrageous and cannot be justified.

Reviewer 'oBenno', I couldn't say it better myself. MB is a unique masterpiece by Tom Ford coming in a 2nd from Original formulation Oud Wood in my list of Private Blend favourites, it's rarity really a worry now with very little left on the planet. Moss Breches is a strong cardamom, male focused fragrance but I'm female and do occasionally enjoy wearing it just for my own pleasure, esp when all the florals in my collection have become a bore. I also just love to 'sniff' my decant. Projection is excellent, along with longevity . The master has excelled once again! Precious and rare drops indeed.

I bought the entire Private Collection and I like this one alot. Its not your..everyday "go to" sort of fragrance, it just has a special scent about it. It seems so natural and leafy. I love the beeswax and benzoin so this one was a winner for me from the start. I could probably see my dad wearing something like this though. Interesting.

I had a small tester roll-on bottle of this given to me by my older brother around 2007. To me it was the epitome of British country-side and instantly transported me to my childhood playing in the leaves on Holiday by the Welsh coast. If this were still in production I would happily smell like this permanently.

Luscious green. Wandering through the forest. Damp, mossy earth beneath my feet. I close my eyes and take in the serene surroundings of this forest paradise. The sweet smell of beeswax permeating the air for some reason. 12 hours of this bliss.

What a brilliant fragrance! I absolutely love the honey and oakmoss combination that I get from MB. I also hope Tom Ford brings this beauty back soon as I'd buy a flacon immediately! Highest recommendation for Moss Breches.

Legendary smell, great longevity and sillage. Creamy and spicy, extremely unisex. And I'm so proud to say that Moss Breches is my signature.

At the time this was released many of the world's perfumers were still reeling from depression and unanswerable existential questions about how to replace oakmoss since the natural material was effectively banned from perfumery (technically, it wasn't banned but the amounts newly permitted in perfumes made it irrelevant and inconsequential to use). Moss Breches seems to be Tom Ford's answer. Can one unequivocally say that it would have given hope to the world that one of perfumery's most beloved ingredients will remain with us as a fully convincing synthetic accord? No, it doesn't.... But Moss Breches sure does get very close. A slightly citrusy and very green herbal opening set the stage in a very pretty and retro way before the heart of tarragon, sage, and rosemary quickly leap forward. As time slowly goes on those herbs are hugged by honey, balsams, and labdanum. Together they create a very compelling and beautiful song. The herbs are dry and very aromatic, as though freshly crushed by a mortar and pestle, and the honey is not your typically sweet floral honey accord but instead adds a waxy element. It is a bit sweet to be sure, but not sugary, the effect is that it helps bring out the brighter yet still earthy elements of the balsams and labdanum. While immediately addictive with its cool, refreshing, and herbal qualities, it is also warming and comforting. Every inhale I take from my wrists makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up ever so slightly in pleasure; every inhale makes my mind say "oakmo-" and then I stop: I almost get there, but it's just not quite it. The dampness and "living flora" quality of the real deal just isn't present here, a lovely as this substitute is. Tom Ford has always had a unique ability to combine loud excesses and trashiness with opulence and elegance, which is when they are at their best in my opinion. However, they have shown us a handful of times that they are quite capable of being quiet, soft, tender, and heartfelt when they really put thought and vision into it. Moss Breches is an exemplar of the latter. This has a secure place on the list of anti-Tom-Ford Tom Ford perfumes along with Noir, Santal Blush, Black Violet, and a couple others that we so love and cherish because they are commendably executed and represent the other side of Tom Ford we so rarely get to see. Criticisms? Nope, not really. Maybe only that some of the ingredients used have a bit too much of a synthetic smell/feel to them, but that's minimal enough to where it doesn't distract me at all and I don't truly notice it unless I really, firmly focus and pick at it with a scalpel. This is then, I guess, not so much Tom Ford's attempt to create a moss-forward fragrance in a time and a world when many thought it might disappear from perfumery forever, but rather an eloquent and wistful homage to the ingredient and its accord that gave us the foundation for so many beautiful perfumes for a very long time.

Luxury herbal hand soap, in the best way possible. I hate comparing perfumes to soap as it somehow disvalues them but since many soap manufactures steal from perfumes anyway I don't think this comparison is that bad -- especially in this case. The main soapiness here stems from the rosemary and sage and it's clean and herbal. The tarragon (and maybe moss?) gives this a little green kick too which accentuate its herbalness. What wraps this up beautifully is the beeswax, and it's the main star here. It's definitely sweet, but the woody softy creamy wax accord is the most dominant accord and it frames everything here beautifully. Of course, it's a TF perfume so the ingredients are of quality too and you can definitely smell that. All together this stays soapy clean while retaining its herbal (and ever so slightly green) side as well. I *can* see myself finding this scent as an artisan soap in a cabin resort in some forest and I really like it for that. It's a 'soap' perfume that stays perfumey while somehow being authentic and rustic. Shame this was discontinued!

I was happy to finally get a sample of this discontinued private blend, Tom Ford Moss Breches. It's classic and agreeable in the way of a classic men's fougere or fresh spicy option, ala Tom Ford for Men, Ralph Lauren Safari, or Chanel Pour Monsieur (the concentree or EDP versions, especially). Its spiciness harkens back to a time of colognes fit more for one's father, grandfather, etc. I get the resins and herbs, but the note listing seems incomplete. I get some citrus, and perhaps even some oakmoss. So it's a bit of a mystery to me overall, but certainly the aura is strong, and the connotation and almost memory of scents or situations past. The name might be misleading, as this doesn't strike me as mossy, or swampy--slightly earthy perhaps. Performance is excellent, strong on both projection and longevity, akin to most of the heavier Tom Ford Private Blends. 7 out of 10

I just noticed this at Nordies, and sprayed some on my wrist to see how it would wear. IMO, this is a man's scent, and if I smelled a man wearing it I think I would swoon. This fragrance features the cedar note, which is very crisp and sharp. It also has my favorite Benzoin and Patchouli, but i can't detect these very well. IMO, if Cedar is the note you are shopping for, and you are a woman, I would suggest Guerlain's Boise Torride, which is more feminine friendly

A unique and mystical fragrance. All of the elements are so perfectly blended that I’m unable to pinpoint them with clarity. It’s like inexplicably finding oneself enveloped in a strange mist within a damp, mossy forest glade. The fragrance keeps evolving, but at no point am I taken anywhere familiar. A marvellous, enchanting experience for special occasions.

This is beautiful. Spicy, sweet but not overly sweet and herbal. Unisex but it leans slightly to feminine scents. Dominant notes are beewax, tarragon, rosemary, sage. Very good performance overall, above average.

expensive baby wipes i mean its ok? but i wouldn't search for it nor wear it alongside many other choices. but still the smell has a sort of "trustworthy" aura in it. not that bad but not for me i guess.

Its ok but thats it, its some honey with sage and a little green mossy backdrop. I get why its axed.

It didn’t age well IMO. Very dry, bitter and sharp. I like it as a scent but not something I would wear.

I've never seen such crazy money for a good fragrance, but not spectacular by any means. I was enjoying my vintage Tom Ford Italian Cypress the other day. I noticed it has a strong oak moss note, just as in Moss Breches. But it also has a wonderful cypress note and more. You can find an Italian Cypress vintage for 1/2 price of Moss Breches and enjoy the same oak moss and a better fragrance in my opinion.

I have a 50ml of this I’m looking to swap for Bois rouge or a bunch of LVs

I have the Dua clone of this, Chypré Suprěme. Just sprayed on test strip 30 minutes ago. So it's supposed to be a damp, soggy, slightly sweet, slightly bitter bed of oakmoss? If so I think I like it. But then again I like the most photorealistic Fougere in history: Amouage Bracken Man, which smells like a group of damp, soily, earthy bracken ferns in a damp, dank marsh. So there ya go. It's interesting that neither this Tom Ford Moss Breches nor the Dua clone, Chypré Supreme, have oakmoss listed as notes. So this is a moss smell created by accord? I'll wear the Dua clone of Moss Breches tonight and report back. Since Moss Breches is discontinued and hard to find it looks like it's up to the clone houses to keep the scent profile alive. Welp, wearing it now deep into the dry down. Different than the test strip. Quite a sour, bitter aspect. I guess that's the moss accord that's not listed? Why isn't "mossy" listed in the accord stack listed here? Someone wrote that this is like a hybrid of Penhaligon Sartorial and Mitsouko. I've not yet ever smelled Guerlain Mitsouko but Sartorial of course has honey and beeswax notes like Moss Breches. I looked up Mitsouko, a chypre, here on Fragrantica and found this description: "Smells like wet forest floor". Mitsouko has "mossy" listed as the top accord. I guess that is what gives Moss Breches the sour smell? It's not a linear lifecycle because the sweet honey, waxy beeswax and amber come to the fore in the drydown, and frankly improve the wearability of this fragrance.

Moss Breches taught me to love aldehydes. Yes, I still associate them with older, vintage perfumes. However, in Moss Breches, they come without the baggage of voluptuous, 'dirty' spices. There's a sweet, clean amber undercurrent that, in my eyes, modernises what would be a soapy, vintage scent. The scent dominates with aldehydes in the opener, accompanied with a honeyed sweetness. The lift of the aldehydes mostly subsides after 15 minutes or so, but there is enough residue to colour the amber with with a unique character. I smell jasmine and lily sweetness, but the body of the scent is formed from waxy honey and amber. It's almost cloying, but kept in balance by the aldehydes. A faint element of oakmoss emerges from the base, again countering the sweetness by imparting an earthy, aromatic element (that smells slightly harsh up close). Subtle hints of wood add to the harshness, but its the sweetness that is pervasive, labdanum and honey. Hours later, harsher elements in the base smooth out and the scent is led forward by the amber. Performance is middle of the road, becoming faint from 3-4 hours. As a skin scent it does persist sweetly for over 8. Considering how hard the scent is to find, it's hard to recommend chasing down the scent, as it's only a like. As a honeyed, amber aldehyde, it is unique and hard to track down this profile, but I am reminded of No 22 and La Myrrhe.

Today I chose to smell Tom Ford Moss Breches on me. It opens consistently which is similar to Guerlain Liu and has a base of various potent herbals. I can see it is a unisex fragrance. Afterwards, the layers peel off to Black Violet, you can also smell Amber Absolute for definite, and then it turns into the prominent scent of Sahara Noir to support this whole fragrance. Overall it reminds me of the other TF Private Blend fragrances. Somehow you can get the similar scents among his Private Blends. To me, Moss Breches is a very complicated scent. I would like to enjoy each specific scent from each bottle of its own fragrance. It stands nor quiet or elegant. It is vivid and bold.

Rich and aftershave-y, this smashes a traditional chypre into a snazzy fougere. The problem is that both are rendered a bit cartoonish, lacking the sophistication usually found within either style. Moss Breches is bombastic; a blaring, shouty kind of a fragrance that's supercharged by a honeyed moss, a soft sage-y lavender, and a smattering of earthy, stemmy things. The textbook chypre-effect dominates but lacks refinement, and the end result is an amiable yet gaudy car crash of Mitsouko and Invasion Barbare. It’s enjoyable for the first hour, but it borders on pantomime soon after.

I believe in 2007 you could still put a meaningful amount of oakmoss in fragrances, but perhaps just barely. The longer ingredient lists had started by then, but youd be suprised how little oakmoss absolute in some fragrances that are considered the "ultimate oakmoss" lol. I wanted to pop in with my 2 cents about one of the a.i. pros/cons..."benzoin and patchouli may not be detectable". Well computer, your nose aint workin' then. Its called moss breches but the oakmoss is used to make it thick as a brick and also deep. The patchouli and benzoin are very noticable to me.

This is one of my favorite Tom Ford Private Blends, and the one I'd ask to bring back as part of the Reserve Collection. I'm very lucky to have found a bottle for a steal of a deal earlier this year. It ticks soooo many olfactory boxes; aromatic, savory, spicy, herbal, green, a little sweet and a little woody. I would say Moss Breches is in the running as the best use of beeswax in a fragrance, ever. With all of this extra time on my hands, maybe I should start a petition to bring this one back into production? 🤔

This is a take on classics. Reminds me of Estee Lauder scents, and Aromatics Elixir Clinique. Moss Breches is a gorgeous, full, dry, spicy, herbal scent with a touch of honey. Quiet genius. However I must admit I'm not at all surprised this has been discontinued. The new launch by Lush, the Bee's Knees is also a stunner, more sweet though, but has that herbal witchy scent and is priced at £70 100ml. (If you miss Moss Breches, try Aromatics Elixir, for real)

I am rarely one to wax lyrical about a clone fragrance, but Mossy Bridges - available from Soma Parfums in the UK - is absolutely fantastic. The performance far exceeds the original, and I am shocked by the quality and depth of the fragrance itself. Unsure if these are on a limited release or will be available long term, but I highly recommend you getting your nose on this one if you miss or want to experience Moss Breeches.

A little and mildly boring green herby affair with folk undertones of rosemary and other leafy creatures with a certain sweetnes attribute i guess to beeswax.I hated it when i first tested it cause was a Tom Ford without character, but i suppose i can think a lot of men would love to wear it when they want to fell free and outdoorsy. And hey it smells ok although as i said before i find it boring.

Just to let people know Perfume Parlour and DUA both do replicas of this fragrance and both are beautiful (perfume parlour is very inexpensive). This has become one of my top 5 private blends, it is truly exceptional and I dream of the day Tom Ford brings this back. There is a new release called Beau De Jour which I hope will the gap that this fragrance has left.

Its smells clean. Starts off really sweet and aromatic but eventually dries down to a tolerable scent. Its like a cross of Sartorial and Fougere D'Argent. The main note here is honeycomb/beeswax/honey. Almost gourmand territory, so the name is a bit misleading. One must be into honey or sweets or more than likely Moss Breches won't be for you.

To me, Moss Breches is everything I wanted Fou D'Absinthe to be + a beautiful waxy note as a nice bonus. I know, Moss Breches doesn't have artemisia as a composition note, but to my nose, these perfumes are close relatives. It has a barbershop quality to it.

The first thing I thought was "wow, this is different" a bit weird after i sprayed, it turn into something really nice and different from all the other mass products.

This is a.powerhouse mossy/green/fougere fragrance radiating beauty.It lasts easily 24 hours plus.I dont get how people rate this as weak.Maybe its noseblind😁

It's good but not enough. The opening is classical chypre, then the base lacks character, quite monotonous.

Mid. Heart of the MossBreches is like T.Mugler pure havane!strange!but attractive,wanna smell regularly.
