Rose America

This very special twist on a rose fragrance is not for those looking for soft and demure. The beauty of the salty Turkish rose makes it a twin to Rose Saltifolia from Maison Crivelli, but the performance outshines it by a long shot. The tart raspberry twist means it could be a cousin to Bibliotheque from Byredo. And the ambrette, carnation & heliotrope give it a vintage yet libidinous character that surpasses expectations. Imagine wandering into the dressing room of that one great aunt (you know, the pretty one who never re-married, but travelled the world and had many “friends”), finding a worn copy of Anais Nin on her vanity table, and opening it up to discover roses, carnations and heliotrope pressed between the pages. That’s what this fragrance gives: Properly lusty, antique femininity. It opens with a salty rose that has a sprinkle of tart from the raspberry, before being joined by the clove-esque carnation. Add the musky and almond-sweet ambrette and heliotrope and there is underlying depth and a bit of an animalic touch. I’d see myself wearing this on a rainy spring day, to an arthouse film, at sunset drinks on a beach house deck, or for a stroll through a public garden. This rose fragrance is not a cliche. Her rosiness is neither ingenue nor dowager. Ms Rose America here just knows a thing or two because she has seen it and been there and that is why she remains true to her vivacious self.

This is a magnificent and unique rose, and I'm so in love with it. The scent is inspired by the landscape in Montauk, USA. It's the smell of wild roses growing near the ocean, along a rugged coastline with cliffs, beaches and salty, sundried rocks. The rose in this is salty as well. And I can smell pebbles warmed by the sun and something that reminds me of a faint peppery smokiness in the air - like someone has lit a bonfire down on the beach, in the sunset. I believe this peppery, smoky feeling comes from the carnation - because I can smell the exact same thing in Oriza Legrand Royal Oeillet, which is a carnation centric scent. I've never smelled a rose like this before, It is so surprising. This is not a rose that goes with pearls and lace and mink - but a stormy, windy rose that is accompanied by grey skies, tall waves and heaps of driftwood. It's the smell of "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemmingway, if it came with a complementary bouquet of roses. And I absolutely adore it! It's a gorgeous rose scent! Sillage is between soft and medium on me, and longevity is medium as well (it could have been a bit better in my opinion) - I get about 5 hours out of it. Definitely a new scent on my wish list.

Big fan of this dry rose with some marine aledhydic notes. The carnation adds this spicy floral note to it, but it's not quite the same as having a cardamom note fully in it. This is still floral primarily, a dry rose finally that doesn't have patchouli! Exactly what I was looking for. Can be worn by men or women. It projects well but doesn't cause a headache or feel overpowering. It is not very powdery (I don't like powdery) and it is not synthetic, which is what I found Initio Atomic Rose to be horribly synthetic without any real rose scent in there. This is the natural rose you want, like being outside in a field of roses next to the water in a dry rocky terrain. Which, I think, is exactly what they were going for with the description. This is not your "fruity floral" feminine scent. But it's not an older woman deep jammy rose either. It's the real scent of rose, bottled up and blended well.

I've tried four out of seven samples and I'm in love with three of them, all sampled from Un Nuit Bali and Un Nuit Montauk. Really interesting compositions, combining notes that you wouldn't think would go together. Annick Menardo is my new favorite perfumer (I realize she's well respected but I never paid attention to her until now). With Rose America Menardo combined salt, ocean accords and rose to create something incomparable. Also seems she is working with high end ingredients with very natural and realistic results. This ends up feeling like a spicy salty dry red rose. I'm really left with no words other than masterpiece.

Wow! Gorgeous, and unique, fresh, mineral, yet sweet powdery scent! Love the combination of the notes! Haven’t smelled anything like this before. This is not a safe blind buy, tho, because of the mineral notes and the carnation. It’s unisex, but leans more feminine, due to the sweet raspberry heliotrope. Overall, this scent it’s worth sniffing, if you’re looking for something different.

Unique fresh GREEN rose that is in actuality almost entirely carnation. All the other notes are only detectable on first spray. I got soft projection but great longevity. You'd need to overspray this, but it's affordably priced, so it's a winner in my book. 9/10

Rose America was a surprise fragrance for me - it is not what you usually expect from a rose fragrance. Rose? Salty rose? Tea?! It took few moments for me to remember what this scent reminded me of so much. And voila! On my skin Rose America smells of rosehip and hibiscus tea. I have never come across a fragrance that would smell like this. It is very cosy, somewhat flowery fresh, lightly sweet, slightly salty and with a drop of sourness. It is not a straight forward fresh rose solifloral, it's not an oily rose you often smell. Rose America is very wearable and unique. I believe, even those who do not like rose fragrances would appreciate this fragrance. Good job! The staying power is good, sillage is moderate.

Unique, a salty rose with the notes of rose, salt, carnation, ambrette and a touch of spices. (I cannot smell tea.) “The dunes of Montauk witness the blossoming of the Rosa Rugosa, a special rose that is whipped by sea spray and exposed to the ravages of time. It becomes naturally marine, peppery and salty.” --> In fact, this fragrance is like a bouquet of roses in front of the ocean. Vibe? Freedom, raw nature, adventure. More for spring and summer. 7/10

This smells...appalling. Yes, it's masterfully made, it smells exactly like it's intended to, and it's still absolutely horrible. Salty, briny, oceanic, low-tide...plus a lovely sweet enduring rose. It contains one of the best sweet rose notes I've found, but there's this dreadful, inescapable undertone of fish market. Like literal fresh cod. And it lasts FOREVER. and it projects UNTO DEATH. (Also offended that they quoted St. Exupery)

It just seems aberrant to have this lovely soft rose tainted by dirty seawater. Something for everyone, I guess.

The start is somewhat alcoholic. Behind it you can feel a very fresh rose accompanied by a carnation, much more prominent than the rose to my nose, providing its spicy and even vinyl aspects. The raspberry is also present. As the hours pass, the raspberry and carnation remain on my skin, leaving the rose the composition and appearing a certain powderiness from the heliotrope. It has a certain aroma of dried flowers potpourri sold for decorative use. Personally, it doesn't smell marine to me, although it does smell somewhat mineral. I would also say that, especially in its initial phases, it brings to mind a certain smell of cooked food that is difficult to explain or know where it comes from. It has a moderate sillage and lasts more than 10 hours on my skin. It is perhaps one of the most particular roses I have ever smelled, but nevertheless not one of my favorites. As the hours go by, it becomes burdensome for me to carry it and I have used it on several occasions solely for descriptive purposes to prepare this review. So far the perfumes I have tried from this house have seemed interesting and different but I have not fallen in love with any of them so far. I walked into a perfume shop today and tried this. Immediately this evoked memories to me. I have been wondering all day where did i feel this scent. After many hours i could remmeber that 21 years ago i had the same exact perfume when i was a student. It was exactly Yves Rocher Pur Desir de Rose of 2002. It was a cheap perfume of 12 Eu back then. Besides the packaging that was cheap the perfume preformed just great and the same as this perfume that i tried today in an expesive niche shop. Then i googled it and i saw that both perfumes smelling exactly the same, were made, formulated by the same perfumer. Yves Rocher one in 2002 and Rose America in 2017, same perfumer, same perfume. I loved/love this scent. A part nostalgy of my student years, a part i could feel it back but in an other bottle but with an other 0 to the price. So people! Keep in mind that in this industry, people get fooled by the marketing, by selling and reselling the same thing. It is up to you either you decide for the liquid inside or overpaying for an image, a bottle, and tricked by the marketing!!!!! Am a bit disapointed! But wish good luck to the brand!

Bubbles1964 absolutely nailed it in their description below; I couldn't say it any better than that. I'm a big Annick Menardo fan, as well. She made my favourite perfume of all time (Miracle So Magic, R.I.P), and I was excited to see what she'd do around rose this time. I was not disappointed. Une Nuit Nomade seem like a pretty rad company (good service, fast delivery). Well worth a try; you can buy a selection of fragrance samples directly from them for a reasonable price, which I did. Edit: my (male) partner smells amazing in this fragrance. He put it on yesterday at noon (about half a sample bottle's worth), and while the fragrance fills a room on application, it is never overwhelming. I could smell it on him all throughout the day and evening, and it was intoxicating. This morning, it was still on the bedclothes. And when he put on the same jacket he'd worn yesterday, I could still smell it within six feet. The longevity and sillage are excellent, but not in an intrusive, overpowering way. This is not an inexpensive fragrance, but a little goes a very long way.

At first, it's Rose Metallica. The unmistakable taste of clove oil at the dentist's. This is the first impression: a medicine, a healer, an ancient ointment. Later, in its main phase though, heliotrope works his way in and raspberry becomes more visible. Rose America becomes sweeter and sweeter, turning into a Turkish delight made of rose and a handful of spices. Une Nuit Nomade know their sweets. Some of their fragrances could be easily turned into some amazing, unbelievable desserts by a haute cuisine chef. A dessert of higher imagination. With Annick Menardo, you can follow this spicy/carnation trail back to Jaipur Homme. Vegetal, rosy, spicy, a bit tart. But there's also an impression that I usually get from cardamom: antique, artisanal, as if following really old recipes, the atmosphere of a place where fragrant spices, fruits and plants were stored for decades.

HUGE disappointment. I looked at the notes and thought there is no way I won’t like this! Well, I don’t like it at all! It was such a strange fragrance. I didn’t get any of the notes listed. Sadly, a big no for me.

This smell reminds me fruity tea with rose petals or potpourri with dominant dried rose and some sour fruits. Not my kind of Rose.
