Haze

Discovered as part of a curated discovery set, “Haze” has swiftly transcended its sampler status to become full bottle worthy in my eyes. This fragrance ensnares the senses with such an intoxicating allure that it’s impossible not to return for another whiff. As spring’s arrival makes its rich warmth more of a seasonal memory, I find myself longing for the cooler days that would allow me to indulge in its embrace. “Haze” stands distinct from “By the Fireplace” by Maison Margiela, with which it shares a woody vanilla profile but not its essence. Where “By the Fireplace” conjures a smoky, forest bonfire, “Haze” opts for a sweet and velvety chestnut prominence, a note that is only a whisper in its counterpart. The dry down is a testament to the artistry of Who is Elijah, a sweet, smoky vanilla that clings to fabric and skin with a tenacious yet gentle touch. Among the various woody profiles in my collection, “Haze” holds a place of honor. If “By the Fireplace” is the quintessential autumnal outdoor companion, then “Haze” is its sweeter sophisticated indoor sibling, a fragrance that wraps you in a woody embrace and whispers tales of cozy evenings by the hearth.

I love this fragrance. It has all the lovely elements of By The Fireplace, without the smack-in-the-face pungent smokiness and oily undertone. It is also a consistent scent - I know what to expect every time I spray it, whereas By The Fireplace is temperamental and unpredictable, depending on the time of day, weather, body chemistry etc. As GenevaX said, there is a coolness to Haze, which makes it more suitable for daytime wear. Longevity isn't phenomenal, but this doesn't worry me considering the price. Sometimes I will put it on during the day and then layer By The Fireplace over the top towards the evening, but I do prefer this one to the Replica scent (better value for money too). I will definitely be repurchasing it when my bottle is finished, whereas I doubt I will buy By The Fireplace again, as much as I like it. I think I would prefer By The Fireplace as a room scent or candle.

At first spray, I wasn’t a fan. I got the vanilla but also an overpowering blast of ‘camp fire’. I gave it time to settle as you can’t judge a fragrance on first spray. After a few minutes I was ready to wash it off, but continued to persevere and I’m so glad I did! The ‘camp fire’ disappeared and after around 30 minutes I was left with a unique, delicate, powdery vanilla with an ever so subtle smokiness. It really is one of those you need to try for yourself to understand what I’m describing as while it is a soft, sweet vanilla fragrance, it has a real uniqueness to it. Sweet and delicate but not sickly. It’s definitely an ‘adult’ perfume. The dry down is long lasting and in my opinion, leans more feminine than unisex in the traditional sense. If you’re into niche fragrances you won’t smell on half the population and are a vanilla fan give it a go!

Out of the Who Is Elijah discovery set, Haze stood out for me. The rest were bit blah for me, but this hit a mark. So much so I bought a full bottle. This is what By The Fireplace should have been like for me. I do like BTF, but much prefer it on others. Gets overly smokey and overwhelming on my skin to the point I feel dirty, like i've got soot all over me, and have to wash it off. Haze is a tiny touch smokey but all about the beautiful sweet chestnuts for me. Its other notes are certainly there but they prop up and emphasise the chestnuts. Mouth-watering. It's going to be a wonderful winter scent for me. Not sure how it would go in the hotter months. It's turning cold here down under. ❤️

A gorgeous woody vanilla fragrance! I'm undecided on gourmand scents so when it comes to vanilla fragrances, I'm always weary going in. But this definitely leans on its woody notes, and the dry down exposes a gorgeous deep vanilla scent that settles so nicely on the skin. Maybe it's because I've been told by multiple people that this fragrance suits me, but the second the weather dips, I'm spritzing this on all my pulse points! The price point on this one is great too - $159 AUD for 100ml, and they always have incredible sales and deals!

I love this one. It smells very vanilla to me, like a vanilla cloud. I do not find it reminiscent of by the fireplace which I cannot stand. It actually reminds me of another perfume from this brand called nomad - they are related I feel. And also poets of Berlin. If you are a deep rich vanilla lover you will probably adore this one.

This is a pretty close dupe of By The Fireplace. It has that same toasted, nutty, woody smell, like chestnuts and marshmallows roasting on a fire. I would say, however, that it is a little sweeter (from the vanilla) and a little less harsh/smoky than BTF. This makes it lean more feminine, although a man could still pull this off.

an ever so slightly sweeter btf.. the original smelled too smoky for my liking, almost to the extent of smelling like burnt rubber ; this smells much sweeter and well rounded, inoffensive. i wore this during my final year of highschool and i’m contemplating a repurchase although the longevity is horrible

Love this so much. Smells Smokey with vanilla. Definitely female not for men. I worked at a store that sells this and a woman picked it up, smelt it and told her friend that it stinks like a campfire... I disagree, I was surprised, but can see how to the unsophisticated it would smell like that...

Love this!!! Sweet creamy amber, so good !!! It's extremely feminine and so different than the other samples I tried from this house! I will try it tomorrow to see if has any power and projection but at first sniff it's a love!

I love this fragrance - it's supposedly a dupe for By the Fireplace but I find it so much wearable without the unbearable opening of smoke. More subtle, nutty, sweet and warm. It's perfect for cold weather.

Smokey, sweet, nutty, vanilla crème brûlée fragrance. I LOVE IT! I am not your gourmand gal but I adore this scent, because of the sweetness being dry and crisp with beautiful powdery softness.

Easily the best from the brand. It is definitely a replica of Replica's By the Fireplace but thats okay because it's slightly more affordable

This is my top 2 favorites from Who Is Elijah. It’s SO addictive. My other favorite is EAU!!

Very good one, long lasting on me

I honestly wouldn't compare this to Maison Margiela's By the fireplace - does it smell similar? Yes kind of. But it's not a dupe. BTF is very unique it has a heart to it that I'd find hard to replicate it has a smokey note that's inoffensive. Haze is sweeter and lacks that spice and smokiness . The note profiles are exactly the same but again different, i find they show up very differently in both as the day goes. I do like Haze on myself cashmeran and Vanilla come out on my skin really well and there is a woody sweetness on dry down with a peek of pepper. This would last 8 hours on me easily, and even when I can't smell it, other people can definitely still smell it. For the price it is I probably wouldn't purchase again because while I like it, I have so many other perfumes I'd reach for before this.

I actually didn’t like this when I first tried this I found it way too smoky and there was something about the woods notes that took over in a way I didn’t enjoy. I feel the formulation has changed as I sniffed a bottle the other week and it actually smelled really good. I find there are some ‘fresher’ notes and sweeter notes which balance it out now, or perhaps I for a bad batch when I tried a sample a few years ago. This is definitely a dupe brand and some of their scents are even confusingly similar to each other, but I do like this one.

attractive woody/smoky scent that would work well for everyday winter wear. the top notes are prominent in the initial, but it loses most of its pepperiness in the dry down unfortunately - would be nice if it stuck around for longer i think. after it settles the scent stays strong enough for a few hours, with the cedar wood and vanilla notes most prominent and some orange blossom lingering above. slight tobacco twinge here, reminds me the tiniest bit of TF tobacco vanille but less smoky and more wood.

This is a very dry, woody, smoky chestnut. It is similar to By the Fireplace by MM, but to me it isn't as smoky - more woody. This is unisex but leans more masculine in my opinion, maybe because of the strong cedar note that I associate more with men's scents. I'm a female and I love wearing it, but it's definitely not an everyday scent. It's a warming, comforting scent with zero sweetness that I can detect.
