Ballroom Bohème

Night of 1877, Vienna. The waltz is banned, but the guests at a Viennese opera house gathering do not care. They take the dance floor anyway, laughing, dancing closely, and spinning as they wish. Ballroom Bohème is a tribute to that night of elegant rebellion, a night that changed everything. It celebrates freedom, passion, and the thrill of breaking boring social rules with style. The opening of Ballroom Bohème hits your nose like entering a steamy, heated ballroom, where the air is warm, aromatic, and lightly spiced. Very grown-up boozy-gourmand notes are noticeable right away. Orris butter smooths everything out, keeping the other notes coated in a pleasant, classy way. A very interesting afterscent can also be detected, the kind usually left by grooming products on the skin, together with irresistible, smoky notes. The scent settles into a creamier, tonka-forward, woody-resinous phase. The iris is still there, now almost flour-like, sometimes showing up, sometimes hiding. Leaving the main ballroom scenery behind, the final stage of Ballroom Bohème feels like stepping into a smaller side room of the same opera house. Parquet floors, a piano in the corner, lighter air. Muted, gentle sweetness appears alongside a faded, barely-there scent of smoked woods and varnish. The fragrance feels more intimate in this setting, still very appealing but quieter. Sublime woody iris with a curious tartness. Cashmere-textured and infinitely genderless. Amongst the very best from the Wienerblut portfolio.

This reminds me so much of Amouage’s discontinued original Opus V, only slightly toned down and much more wearable. That one, when originally released, was a monster of eternally long-lasting dry western oud, boozey amber and starchy orris. Ballroom Bohème arrives at something so similar despite the difference in notes.3 out of 5.
